Alex slammed the Liger Zero's canopy shut. The thrusters ignited with a controlled burst, throwing gravel against the Iron Mule's hull.

Rhian's Arosaurer rolled out behind him, autocannons clearing their feed ramps with mechanical clicks.

They were moving before the civilians reached the stable yard.

The townspeople scattered as the Zoids emerged. Women pulled children inside. Old Man Hemlock dropped his inventory with a crash. Alex caught the panic in their movements—shoulders hunched, feet scrambling over uneven cobblestones.

Fear was a structural weakness. Same as any joint not properly welded.

"They're just machines," Alex muttered, more to steady himself than anyone else. The Liger's servos hummed at 73% efficiency. Good enough.

Rhian's Zoid shifted its weight, claws scraping stone. She was already tracking heat signatures ahead—dozens of them, moving fast.

Alex ignored the shouts behind them. Fear couldn't calibrate his instruments. Couldn't tighten a loose panel. Couldn't stop a Titan from flattening a town that couldn't afford to lose another river.

The Liger's sensors painted the eastern ridge in thermal gradients. Eight D-rank grazers. One C-rank predator. All of them converging on Millcross.

Alex's jaw tightened. His Zoids weren't here for applause.

Alex keyed his comm. "Rhian. Listen carefully."

The Liger Zero's sensors painted Millcross in thermal signatures. Eight dustbacks, maybe more. All moving fast toward the eastern quarter.

"They're D-rank. Slow but heavy. You hit them with autocannons—aim for the joints. Knees first, then hips. Don't waste ammunition on center mass."

Rhian's voice crackled back, young but steady. "Got it. Autocannons on joints."

Alex felt the familiar weight in his chest. Not fear. Responsibility. These weren't simulation targets.

"Stay behind me. Let them commit to their charge, then hit the brakes. I'll draw their attention—"

"—and I'll get clean shots." Rhian finished his sentence. "Right. Like we practiced."

The Liger Zero shifted its weight. Alex could feel its eagerness through the neural link. It wanted to hunt. Wanted to prove itself.

"Move out. Stay close to the ridge line—use the elevation for targeting angles."

Alex gunned the thrusters. The Liger Zero surged forward, claws digging into packed earth. Rhian's Arosaurer followed, autocannons swinging in practiced arcs.

The settlement's eastern wall loomed ahead. Too close to the grazers' path.

Alex's jaw tightened. Eight targets. Two minutes to impact.

Alex positioned the Liger Zero at the ridge's edge. Below, eight dustbacks moved like walking hills. Twenty meters to a target that size.

The Liger's sensors painted them in thermal signatures. Eight heat signatures, all moving in the same direction. Predictable. Too predictable. Alex keyed the comm.

"Rhian. Line up on my mark. Autocannons on the westernmost target."

His Zoid's servos hummed, ready for the opening move. The Liger Zero's shoulder-mounted autocannons were relics from the Stormclaw Liger's original configuration, but they'd served well enough.

"RROOOO — RRRRROOOO — !"

The Liger's challenge echoed across the ridge. Mechanical ferocity. Pure, distilled aggression.

Alex felt the familiar surge through their neural link. The Liger wanted to hunt. Wanted to prove precision mattered.

"Now."

The Arosaurer's twin barrels spat fire. Two-inch shells screamed across the gap, detonating against the lead dustback's left knee joint. Titan hide buckled. Hydraulic fluid sprayed in a fine mist.

""RROOO — !""

The Liger Zero charged forward, claws extended. Its ion boosters flared blue-white as it covered the distance in seconds. Strike Laser Claws found purchase in the same dustback's hip assembly. Titanium plating parted like paper.

Alex's HUD flickered. Structural weakness confirmed. The creature staggered, crashing into a stand of ironwood trees.

"Again."

Rhian's voice crackled through the comm. Young. Sharp.

"AAAROS — RRRRROOOO — !"

The Arosaurer's tail spiked shield extended, sweeping a second dustback's forelimbs from under it. Alex noted the timing. Half a second late, but improving.

The Liger Zero pivoted, electron fangs bared. Its core pulsed with harvested bio-electric energy. RRRROOO — KRACK!

First dustback down. Three more converged on their position. Alex's jaw tightened. Swarm tactics. Inefficient but dangerous in numbers.

"Flank left. I'll draw their attention."

"ROOO — RRRROO!"

The Liger understood. Alex triggered the Mane Blast, electromagnetic pulse washing across the ridge. Two dustbacks convulsed, servos sparking as their organic circuitry overloaded.

Rhian didn't wait for invitation.

Her autocannons spoke again. First dustback dropped. Then another. Alex watched her targeting improve with each shot.

"RRRROO — !"

The Liger charged past him, taking point. Three remaining dustbacks formed a loose circle. Alex felt the creature's focus through their bond. Predator instinct overriding pilot input.

Dangerous. Necessary.

Alex matched the Liger's pace. His controls were extensions of his spine now, every input flowing like hydraulic fluid through sealed lines. "RRRRROOO — KRACK-KRACK!"

Two more down. The last dustback turned to flee. Dustbacks were herbivores, not fighters. Running was the correct response.

Except it presented a clean shot.

"Rhian."

The Arosaurer's barrels aligned. "AAAROS — !"

Alex watched the shell trajectory. Perfect. Center mass. The dustback's carcass collapsed in a spray of pulp and mineral fragments.

"RROOO — ROOO — ?"

Question in the Liger's vocalization. Asking permission to investigate the kill zone.

"Hold position."

Alex cycled through his HUD displays. Component analysis running. The dustbacks yielded Grade-C bio-components, suitable for basic Zoid integration but nothing revolutionary. Eight kills. Four days of travel east.

He touched his pendant. Familiar weight against his collarbone. Rhian's gift. Safety.

"Good work."

The Liger Zero rumbled "ROOO — RRRROO!" Agreement. Satisfaction. They'd practiced this dance a dozen times since leaving Veridia.

Rhian's Arosaurer rolled forward, its pilot visible in the cockpit. Ten years old and piloting a machine that could level buildings. Alex's chest tightened.

"You didn't hit anything important, did you?"

Her voice carried doubt. Fear. Alex recognized the cadence.

"The dustbacks were D-rank. We handled them properly."

He meant it. They'd executed textbook engagement protocols. Target priority established. Weapon expenditure minimal. Casualty count zero.

"AAAROS — RROO!"

The Arosaurer's agreement was warm through their comm. Rhian smiled at him across the clearing.

Alex noted the expression. Trust forming. Like weld seams cooling into permanent bonds.

"Let's harvest what we can. Before something bigger notices the fireworks."

Something scraped stone in the distance. Larger. Hungry.

Alex's HUD picked up the thermal signature immediately. "RRRRROOO — ?"

The Liger's question was sharp. Something new was moving through the trees.

Alex keyed his comm. "Stay close to the ridge line. Whatever that is, we meet it together."

ROO — !

The Liger Zero's sensors painted the ridge in thermal overlays. Something large moved through the trees ahead—too big for the dustbacks, too deliberate for wandering grazers.

Alex held position. Let it come closer.

Twenty meters out, the creature stepped into a clearing. Alex's HUD struggled to classify it. Low-slung body, twelve meters long, built like a cross between a crocodile and a digging machine. Stone-gray hide with black striping along its spine. Eyes glowing amber in the dim light.

RRRROO — ?

The Liger's vocalization carried uncertainty. Alex felt it through their neural link—predator recognizing something outside normal parameters.

"That's not a Dustback," Rhian whispered over the comm.

No kidding. The creature's forelimbs ended in shovel-like claws. Its jaw unhinged sideways, revealing a circular row of grinding teeth. Something about its posture suggested it wasn't just hunting—it was excavating.

Alex's fingers tightened on the controls. Component analysis running. Grade-C classification confirmed, but the bio-structure was unlike anything he'd catalogued. Those claws could crack Titan bone. That jaw arrangement suggested specialized processing capabilities.

"ROO — RRRROO?"

The Liger wanted to engage. Alex kept them still. Better to observe than rush into a fight with an unknown predator. The creature turned, amber eyes locking onto their position.

It knew they were there.
