The mud went still.
Water lapped against the ridge where the Liger Zero crouched, thick and gray with silt. Steam rose from the basin in lazy coils. The Terra-Colossus was gone, swallowed by the basin. The seismic hum that had vibrated through Alex's teeth for the last hour had died completely.
His hands trembled on the controls. The adrenaline was just catching up with him. The Liger's left hind leg flickered red on the HUD: hydraulic pressure at twelve percent, actuator rods bent. He'd need a full strip-down and replacement parts they didn't have.
"Ziya, Rhian, report your status."
"The Lanstag is clean. It's shaken, but it held. The dam charges did their job, and the liquefaction reached forty meters down. Nothing is walking out of that."
"Rhian?"
She waited a moment before answering. Her breathing came quick and uneven over the comm.
"The Arosaurer is fine. I'm fine. Is it... is it really over?"
Alex exhaled. His shoulders dropped.
"It looks like it. The Colossus needed solid ground for its seismic attacks. The basin took that away. It drowned."
He let himself believe it for exactly seventeen seconds.
Then the water rippled wrong.
These weren't waves from settling mud. Concentric rings spread out from a single point near the basin's center, moving against the current. The Liger's sensors pinged a thermal spike the size of a stadium, rising fast.
"Ziya, are you seeing this?"
"On it. There's a thermal bloom at grid four-seven, twelve thousand tons and climbing."
"Twelve thousand tons? That's what it weighed going in."
"Alex. It's not climbing. It's holding at twelve thousand. The water didn't add mass. It just... didn't lose any."
The mud at the basin's center bulged upward.
This wasn't a geyser. Something solid was rising, a column, a shape with broad shoulders. A massive head rose slow and deliberate, mud sliding off its mineralized hide in sheets. The drill-cluster hung silent now, folded back against its chest like a dead thing. But the amber eyes burned brighter than before, focused, hateful.
The Terra-Colossus didn't climb out. It surfaced like a submarine breaching. Water cascaded off its flanks in brown waterfalls. Its six legs found purchase on the liquefied bottom and pushed, and the ground didn't give way this time. The beast had learned. It planted each foot with deliberate care, testing, locking onto something solid beneath the slurry.
"RROOOO-AAARRR-GHRRR!"
Alex understood the roar for what it was: a declaration of war, not a mere challenge.
SHWUUU FOOOMM!
The Liger Zero's boosters fired on instinct. Alex didn't think. He reacted, driving the machine sideways as a seismic pulse shattered the ridge where they'd stood a heartbeat before. The wave caught the damaged hind leg anyway, hydraulic pressure bleeding from twelve percent down to four before the readout leveled off. Metal screamed. Hydraulic fluid sprayed. The Liger stumbled, went down on one knee.
No seismic precision. Just raw power. Broad area. It doesn't need finesse anymore: it's strong enough to crush us with the shockwave alone.
"Alex, watch your left flank!"
Rhian's Arosaurer screamed past, autocannons hammering the Colossus's shoulder. Rounds sparked off the mineralized hide. The beast didn't flinch. It didn't even turn. Its massive head swung toward the smaller Zoid, and a forelimb the size of a transport truck swept through the air.
"Rhian, move!"
She juked left. The claw missed by meters. The displacement wave alone knocked the Arosaurer sideways, skidding through mud.
VREEE-EE-EE-EE!
The Lanstag's Rolling Spike Shields engaged. Ziya's machine charged from the right, golden antlers lowered, shield buzzsaws screaming. She hit the Colossus's flank at two hundred kilometers per hour.
The impact threw up a wall of mud. Its shields bit into hide, gouging deep furrows. Sparks showered. The Colossus staggered, its weight shifting, but didn't fall. Its drill-cluster snapped forward, molten metal spraying.
Ziya twisted the Lanstag away. The molten spray caught the rear armor. Armor integrity warnings flashed across Alex's shared tactical display.
"Ziya! Are you okay?!"
"I'm fine. The Smart Guards caught most of it. But I can't trade hits with this thing, Alex. One clean shot and the Lanstag folds."
The Colossus turned, slow and deliberate, its amber eyes fixing on the Liger Zero.
It knows. It knows I'm the one who put it under. And it's coming for me.
"New plan. Rhian, draw its attention. Ziya, flank left. I'll... My leg's at four percent, so I'm not covering ground fast. I'll hold position and let it come to me instead. Rhian, bait it and make it expose the underside. Ziya, hit the belly plates the moment it opens. If a real opening shows after that, I'll close the distance myself, leg or no leg."
The Lanstag held steady beside the ridge.
"Alex, the underside is under twelve thousand tons of mud-caked Titan."
"Then we make it show us."
The Colossus charged.
This time it gave no seismic warning, just mass and momentum, six pillar-legs driving it forward like a landslide given purpose. The ground shook with each step. The Liger's sensors screamed proximity alerts.
"Rhian, go now."
"On it. Hey, ugly! I'm over here!"
The Arosaurer's flamethrowers roared. Twin streams of white-hot fire washed over the Colossus's face. The beast didn't slow. It didn't blink. Its grinding maw opened, and a glob of molten metal launched ahead of her, cutting off her escape vector.
Smart. It's learning us too.
CLACK-KA-THUD!
The Arosaurer's autocannons fired point-blank into the molten glob. It threw the Terra-Colossus's aim off. Rhian darted through the gap, tail spike slashing across the beast's forelimb joint.
SKREEE-CHAK-CHAK-CHAK!
The Arosaurer's electron bite snapped at the joint. Metal shrieked. The Colossus roared, pain this time, not rage, and its weight shifted.
There. The belly plates, right flank, just behind the second leg pair.
"Ziya, deploy the Thruster Lance on my mark: right flank, strike behind the second leg pair where the belly plates are exposed."
SHWIIING-CHCK!
The Lanstag's heavy lance swung down, rocket thruster igniting. The machine surged forward, a white-and-silver bullet aimed at the Colossus's exposed underside.
The beast tried to pivot, but it wasn't fast enough. The mud still sucked at its legs. The lance struck home with a sound like a mountain breaking.
"HONNN-BRRRR-ZZZZT!"
The Lanstag's bellow tore the air. Its Thruster Lance punched through mineralized hide, through muscle, through the seismic core. Black ichor geysered. The Colossus screamed, a sound that vibrated in Alex's chest cavity, and reared up, legs flailing.
Now. While it's open.
"RROOOO-RRRRROOOO!"
The Liger Zero launched.
Four percent hydraulic pressure, bent actuator rods, none of it mattered. He'd promised himself one more push if the opening came, and the actuator gave everything it had left as the ion boosters screamed and the machine flew, not ran, flew, straight at the Colossus's exposed throat.
Strike Laser Claws extended. Bio-electricity crackled along golden blades. The Weakness Scan painted a target the size of a fist, a hairline fracture in the crystalline deposits beneath the jaw, where the Lanstag's lance had driven shockwaves through the internal structure.
One shot. One chance.
The Liger Zero's jaws snapped shut on the fracture.
"RAAARR-GHOOORR!"
Electron fangs drove home. Bio-electricity surged. The Colossus's body convulsed. Crystalline networks overloaded. Seismic organs shorted out from the inside. Its legs buckled. The great head slammed down into the mud, sending one final wave rippling across the basin.
Then everything went still.
This time the stillness was real: no rippling water, no rising shape.
The Colossus lay broken in the basin it had claimed, mud already rising around its flanks, the drill-cluster silent and cold.
Alex's hands went slack on the controls. His vision swam. Pain flared in his left leg: neural feedback from the Liger's damaged hindquarter, or maybe his own body finally catching up. He tasted copper.
"Alex. Alex, answer me."
The comm crackled to life on Ziya's channel.
"Rhian, report your status."
"The Arosaurer is green. I'm green too, just... shaking a little."
"The Lanstag's holding. There's an armor breach on the rear quarter, but the core's stable. I'm coming to you."
The Lanstag's silhouette loomed through the steam, moving carefully now. The Arosaurer fell in beside it, smaller but steady.
Alex forced his fingers to unclench. He forced his breathing to slow.
The Liger Zero's core purred beneath him.
"VUMMM-vummm-vummm..."
A low, steady vibration ran through the cockpit.
Partner. We did it.
He spoke to the empty cockpit.
"Yeah. We did."
Ziya swung down from the Lanstag's cockpit hatch, boots sinking into the softened ground. Rhian climbed down after her, pulling her sun-faded scarf back up over one shoulder.
"Ziya, tell me the Lanstag can still walk."
"It can walk. Slowly, and it'll need Borin's forge before it fights again, but it can walk."
Rhian let out a short, disbelieving laugh.
"We actually did it. That thing is dead. Really dead."
Alex looked past them both, at the basin already swallowing the Colossus's ruined shape, at the steam thinning over the water. Something in his chest finally loosened, the first easy breath he'd taken in hours.
"It's dead. Let's get everyone home before something else decides to test that."
Ziya was already running a hand along one of the Lanstag's scorched flank plates, checking the breach that had flared red on Alex's tactical display minutes earlier.
"I can field-patch the worst of this tonight. The Liger's leg needs a full strip-down, though, more than Millcross has tools for. That's a job for Veridia, and Borin's forge, once we're home."
Rhian fell into step beside Alex, matching his slower pace as the Liger limped toward the ridge.
"You should let me carry some of that hydraulic weight home. The Arosaurer's still got the legs for it tonight. Yours doesn't."
Alex managed something close to a smile.
"I'll take you up on that."
