Cannon Fodder In Apocalypse: I Rule With Sanctuary Evolution System
Chapter 91: Devastating News"She is dead." Ni Mengxue announced, breaking the fragile silence.
The sound of choked sobs mixed with suppressed fear surged in that moment. Ruo Chiwu’s husband reacted differently.
Fu Lin and Yun Tong couldn’t hold themselves back any longer. They both began to sob, their cries especially heartbreaking.
Fu Jing subconsciously hugged Fu Sinan.
Vincent watched everything with a detached expression. The usually calm man closed his eyes. When he had kept them open earlier, they had been completely red.
Valer with a steady expression, calmly bent down and picked up Ruo Chiwu. Qi Mu immediately stopped him.
"Where are you taking her?"
"I need to deal with her body," Valer replied calmly. "If we don’t burn her corpse, she may turn into a zombie."
Yun Tong suddenly shouted, "Can’t you at least give us a few seconds to grieve? She was our wife! You’re going to deal with her body immediately?"
Fu Lin lunged toward Ruo Chiwu. "No! I’m not ready. Just leave me with her corpse. I want to stay with her. Let me die with her!"
Ni Mengxue stood up and calmly pushed him away. Fu Lin stared at her in disbelief.
"Even you... You’re such an ungrateful person. She died because of you! She took that risk for you, and now that she’s dead, you’re pushing me away too? You don’t even want to let us keep her body?"
Ni Mengxue looked at him calmly.
"There’s no need to make a fuss. Her body has to be dealt with. Do you want to see her become a zombie and continue living when she no longer has any control over herself?"
Fu Lin glared at her before lunging forward. "It’s all because of you!"
Vincent immediately stopped him. "Fu Lin, control your emotions."
"I don’t fucking care!"
Fu Lin’s eyes were red as he shouted,
"She took care of this woman for twenty years! And now that my wife is dead, look at her! She’s not even remorseful! She isn’t even punishing the person responsible for her death. Instead, she’s acting as if nothing happened!"
He glared at Ni Mengxue. "Are you going to brush aside the fact that your husband was responsible for killing my wife?"
Ni Mengxue remained composed.
"Vent your anger if you need to. This may be the last time you can afford to do so. We’re in the middle of nowhere. Your shouting will attract mutated plants, beasts, or zombies."
She turned toward Valer. "Are you going to deal with her body?"
"I’ll burn her corpse. That will prevent her from becoming a mutated zombie."
Ni Mengxue nodded. "All right. Do it."
She then walked toward the passenger’s seat. Seeing this, Fu Lin’s legs gave out, and he collapsed to his knees.
"How heartless... How heartless..."
He lowered his head and sobbed. "My Chiwu... She shouldn’t have taken care of that woman..."
Yun Tong crouched beside him, crying silently.
Meng Xiaoni watched everything from the sofa with an indifferent expression. He didn’t care who had died. The only thing on his mind was the hundred thousand kilograms of rice.
Still, he felt a faint sadness. Ruo Chiwu had been kind to him.
He remembered the last time they had met, just before he left Swan Base. She had smiled kindly, handed him a pack of flatbread, and patted his shoulder.
"Meng Xiaoni, Mengxue is just irritated right now. Once she thinks everything through, she’ll come around. Don’t give up on her."
She had smiled again. "Mengxue is the kindest person I know."
Now, seeing Ni Mengxue’s cold reaction, Meng Xiaoni could only conclude that she was truly heartless. If... she was the real Ni Mengxue.
If she wasn’t, then... the question was... did she had a hand in Ruo Chiwu’s death?
He sat quietly on the sofa.
Ni Mengxue didn’t care about anyone’s opinion. She sat in the driver’s seat and silently analyzed the situation.
After a while, she heard footsteps behind her. She turned around and saw Fu Sinan.
"I’ll tell you what happened while you were away," he said. "We heard your voice, and it sounded like you were in danger. Everyone wondered whether we should go after you."
He paused.
"Aunt Ruo made the decision for us. She drove toward your location."
"Mr. Lu initially refused. He even ordered one of his subordinates to investigate first. But Aunt Ruo stopped him. She said that if only a few people went, they might not be enough to deal with whatever had trapped you. By the time the others arrived, it could already be too late."
Fu Sinan’s expression darkened.
"So she led everyone there. When we reached the clearing, we saw you trapped by the mutated vines. Mr. Lu and Aunt Ruo immediately rushed out to save you. However, the moment they stepped outside, the figure they saw trapped in the vines attacked them. It was an illusion."
Ni Mengxue’s expression remained still.
"During the fight, Aunt Ruo was captured by one of the vines. It drained her vitality until she lost her life. By the time everyone destroyed the mutated plants, we found her body."
Ni Mengxue nodded slowly. "Thank you."
Fu Sinan looked at her for a moment before sighing and patting her shoulder. "It’s all right. It’s not your fault."
Ni Mengxue blinked. "I’m not blaming myself."
Fu Sinan glanced at the seat beneath her.
He knew Ni Mengxue was somewhat of a clean freak. Aside from sitting beside her husband, she avoided touching unfamiliar surfaces. He had even seen her sanitize seats before sitting down.
Yet now she was sitting in Ruo Chiwu’s seat. Her hands were clenched so tightly that her nails had nearly broken the skin.
Her eyes, which were usually bright with curiosity and ideas, were completely dull.
’She’s shaken.’
But she insisted she didn’t care. Fu Sinan didn’t know how to comfort her, so he quietly walked away.
Meanwhile, Lu Yucai remained seated in his wheelchair. He stared at the floor, trapped in a mire of self-doubt and guilt.
’If I hadn’t gone... would she still be alive?’
