"You asshole, you really do think this is my fault!" Jill shouted after I deliberately stayed silent instead of defending myself.
Frustrated, she began pounding her fists against my chest repeatedly. The hits were soft enough that they barely even counted as attacks, more like an angry kitten venting its outrage.
"Ahh, are you trying to murder your future husband?" I groaned dramatically while pretending to shield myself. "Is this all for my money? The VR-Universe? The Heatsend royal family warned me not to trust you Norley people."
I continued teasing her even though it was already painfully obvious she wasn’t enjoying it anymore.
Still, she was the one who chose a jerk for a fiancé.
Jill glared up at me with watery eyes filled with equal parts anger, embarrassment, and helpless affection. Somehow, instead of pushing me away, she only grabbed onto my shirt even tighter while the tears in her eyes threatened to roll down any moment now.
"I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I was just joking, okay? I didn’t mean any of it," I finally caved and apologized while pulling Jill into my arms and pressing her head against my chest. And she broke into tears. It was like she was waiting for it.
Even though I apologized, a stubborn part of me still felt that if I was going to apologize anyway, then I might as well have properly earned it first.
And I did. Unfortunately, that came with consequences of its own.
Ugh, having three fiancées was exhausting.
These three had publicly declared themselves my fiancées without even consulting me first. Back then, I was still trying to come to terms with the very idea of being in a polygamous relationship, yet somehow they bulldozed straight through that stage and left me scrambling to keep up.
And now they acted like it was entirely my fault whenever I spent more time with one of them before the others.
Honestly, I was trying my best to balance things in my own way. If they didn’t like how I handled it, then they should just tell me directly how they wanted things done instead of making both me and themselves miserable with passive-aggressive games and jealousy.
Whether I would actually follow those instructions properly afterward, however... that was a completely different debate altogether.
"I’m heading to the Dark Realm. Inform the other two on my behalf already," I told Jill, refusing to fall for her tears.
This was the same woman who had tricked me into publicly announcing our relationship on the Grimoire Network. Out of the three fiancées, she was the one I had to be most careful around.
"What?" Jill muttered weakly as she lifted her head from my chest and stared into my eyes with her reddened, teary gaze.
For a moment, I couldn’t tell whether she was shocked by what I said or simply asking me to repeat myself.
Either way, that wasn’t the important part.
Earlier, Moon Frost had contacted me and informed me that she had finally managed to resolve her clan to follow me into Winter Valley, one of the thirteen deadliest regions within the Dark Realm.
However, the migration had to happen immediately. Once the Snow Elves discovered their intentions, escape would become nearly impossible.
The Snow Elves wouldn’t merely stop them. They would slaughter every last member of the Frosling race.
The one thing the proud and arrogant Snow Elves truly envied about the Frosling Race was their native realm blessing, a trait that granted them natural immunity to the Glacier Plague.
For centuries, the Snow Elves tried countless methods to adapt that blessing into their own race. They conducted endless experiments and even went so far as to secretly arrange selective breeding between Snow Elves and Froslings, abandoning their so-called racial pride whenever it suited their interests.
And the ironic part was that the Glacier Plague normally posed little threat to the Snow Elves unless they ventured into Winter Valley.
But that was exactly what they wanted to do.
Not just the Snow Elves either. Practically every major power in the Dark Realm coveted Winter Valley. How could they not? Beneath its endless glaciers and deathly storms hid unimaginable wealth, ancient ruins, rare resources, and opportunities powerful enough to reshape entire races.
The entire Dark Realm saw the treasure hidden within Winter Valley. Yet no one could truly claim it. All native races lacked immunity to the Glacier Plague and would slowly become frozen statues inside the valley. Meanwhile, the Froslings possessed immunity but were too weak to survive the countless other horrors lurking within Winter Valley.
That was where I came in.
At least, that was how Moon Frost introduced me to her race, as the savior her clan had finally found.
Which was precisely why the Snow Elves could never be allowed to learn about their migration plans. If they discovered the truth, they wouldn’t merely try to stop the Froslings from leaving. They would massacre them. The Snow Elves would rather slaughter yesterday’s slaves than watch them rise high enough to compete with their masters.
"I knew it, I could count on you," I said before kissing Jill on the forehead without waiting for her response.
Then I released her and turned toward the exit taking my leave, "Alright, I’ll get going now."
"Wait, what the heck?" Jill shouted in disbelief.
Unable to pull me back, she quickly moved around and planted herself directly in front of me, blocking my path before I could leave. Her reddened eyes widened as if she had only just realized I really intended to leave.
But before she could properly question me, violent knocking suddenly erupted from the lab door.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
"Your Highnesses! Landquake!!!" Kella’s panicked voice screamed from outside.
"Jill, you need to get out of the lab right now!"
"A massive landquake strong enough to destroy the entire city is happening as we speak!!"
Jill and I instantly froze.
Only then did we realize something was wrong.
Because of the high-grade isolation array formation surrounding the laboratory, the sounds, vibrations, and energy disturbances from outside had all been completely blocked off.
While the outside world descended into chaos, the two of us had remained inside this quiet little bubble completely unaware of the disaster unfolding beyond the lab walls.
