As Deng Xin spoke, she involuntarily tightened her grip. The large cat in her arms meowed, and she said apologetically, "I’m sorry, Maomao."
Chen Chuan’s eyes shifted slightly. He discovered that as Deng Xin’s emotions wavered, he could actually sense a faint trace of her Domain.
’Ordinary people don’t possess the powerful Life Force of a Fighter. While they do have a Domain, it’s usually so weak as to be almost imperceptible.’
’But Deng Xin wasn’t a Fighter, yet she could project hers so easily. This must be a natural talent, the source of her ability.’
He spoke up, "Miss Deng, what are your plans now? Are you thinking of leaving the Elephant Gang?"
Deng Xin nodded, then shook her head.
"I do want to leave, but whenever I sense danger, something bad is certain to happen to those around me. I think this time it might be about Ah Nai and the Elephant Gang. I don’t want to just abandon them," she said, raising her head. "So I wanted to ask for help from you, Mr. Chen, and the Processing Bureau."
She wouldn’t have had the courage to face the Processing Bureau alone. But when she decided to contact Chen Chuan, she hadn’t sensed any danger. Furthermore, Chen Chuan himself was being threatened by the Ferris Wheel Company, so she felt he might be able to help her.
Most importantly, the Elephant Gang was her last refuge. If she couldn’t even be safe here, she had no idea where else she could go. She was out of options.
After a moment of thought, Chen Chuan asked, "Miss Deng, how long is the interval between when you first sense danger and when something actually happens?"
Deng Xin thought for a moment. "It could be within a day or two, or maybe two or three days. But Mr. Chen, my feelings have never been wrong."
Chen Chuan said, "I understand, Miss Deng. The information you’ve provided is very important and extremely useful to me. So, I’m more than willing to help you."
’Beyond the intel itself, Deng Xin’s premonitions of danger were also incredibly useful. It meant the Ferris Wheel Company might be making a move soon, which would allow him to make preparations in advance.’
’The Ferris Wheel Company was under close surveillance lately. If they wanted to target the Elephant Gang, the only card they could really play was the Swordfish Gang. As long as he kept a tight watch on the Swordfish Gang, there shouldn’t be any problems.’
’But that only considered external factors. If this was an internal issue within the Elephant Gang, it would be much more troublesome.’
Hearing his promise, Deng Xin bowed deeply in gratitude. "Thank you, Mr. Chen."
Chen Chuan touched his Realm Token, preparing to contact the Bureau to make specific arrangements. Suddenly, a crackling sound filled his ears. The Realm Token was being jammed.
The Domain signal became intermittent. At the same time, the sound of a goose whistle pierced the air from outside, followed by shouting and the sound of many people running.
He looked outside and saw that the drawbridge at the end of the commercial street was being raised. The barricades at the front were being moved back into place, and the Elephant Gang members on lookout duty all grew visibly tense.
’Something must have happened.’
Deng Xin immediately grew nervous. She said, "Ah Le, go see what’s happened!"
"Okay, Sis, don’t worry. I’ll go ask around."
Although Ah Le was young, he didn’t seem panicked at all. He walked to a spot with less interference, touched his neck, and began to probe and communicate with the Elephant Gang’s internal Domain network.
After about two minutes, he hurried back, panting. "Sis, it’s bad! Old Man Tu Ge is dead, and they’ve arrested Brother Tu Nai! A lot of people are saying Brother Tu Nai killed the old man."
Deng Xin involuntarily clapped a hand over her mouth.
Ah Le added, "Sis, you have to leave quickly! Someone inside is saying you’re a spy for the Swordfish Gang! You need to get out of here." He then turned to the calm-faced Chen Chuan. "Mr. Chen, you can help her, right?"
Chen Chuan said to Deng Xin, "Miss Deng, I think you must leave here first."
Ah Le said, "That’s right, Sis! Ah Nai is one of the best Fighters in the gang; he’ll probably be fine. Besides, if you leave, he won’t have to worry about you and might be able to get away on his own!"
Deng Xin clutched her chest, seemingly trying to calm her breathing. She shook her head. "Ah Nai is completely loyal to the gang. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have been captured so easily. If that’s the case, he won’t leave on his own until he clears his name."
She looked at Chen Chuan and said pleadingly, "Mr. Chen, can you save Ah Nai? He’s been so good to me, I can’t just abandon him. I’m begging you."
’Chen Chuan glanced at Deng Xin. ’This Miss Deng is certainly loyal,’ he thought. ’Not just trying to save her own skin at a critical moment like this.’’
He said, "Miss Deng, I know your boyfriend, Tu Nai, is a key member of the Elephant Gang and also Tu Ge’s grandnephew. Blaming Tu Ge’s death on Tu Nai is strange in itself. When you came out, did you know what Tu Nai was doing beforehand?"
Ah Le cut in, "I know! He just went to get medicine for the old man. The medicine the old man needed recently had to be acquired through outside channels. That batch was very important, and he would only take it if Ah Nai personally brought it back."
’Chen Chuan understood at once. ’The Ferris Wheel Company was most likely pulling the strings here.’’
’Since the Ferris Wheel Company had orchestrated this, he absolutely couldn’t let them have their way. Besides, he had reviewed the Elephant Gang’s files on his way here. Tu Ge had been the leader for over thirty years; his prestige was unmatched. With his death, the Elephant Gang was bound to fall into chaos.’
’He had no love for gang members, but for a gang with over ten thousand people like the Elephant Gang to suddenly have problems was not a good thing for the entire Yinglu District.’
He said to Deng Xin, "Miss Deng, since I’ve already promised you, leave this matter to me. I’ll get you out of here first."
Ah Le said, "I have a way to get her out, Mr. Chen. You can leave this to me."
Chen Chuan asked, "Are you sure?"
"I’m sure."
Chen Chuan sent a message through his Realm Token, then said, "Alright, take Miss Deng and go. Once you’re outside, you’ll see a sports car. That’s your pickup. Someone will be there to protect you."
Deng Xin stood up and bowed to Chen Chuan. "Mr. Chen, thank you. I’m counting on you." After speaking, she picked up the cat named Maomao and quickly followed Ah Le out.
Chen Chuan could see Ah Le fiddle with his Realm Token for a moment, then shout a few words to the guards at the drawbridge. The guards eyed them suspiciously and contacted someone inside before reluctantly having the drawbridge lowered, allowing the two of them to leave.
’He could tell that Ah Le had clearly used Resonator technology to transmit false information. But this also meant that people on the inside could probably figure out their location easily.’
He picked up the tea from the table, took a sip, and stood up. He walked down from the teahouse and onto the main street. His gaze fell upon the tallest building in the distance, deep within the Elephant Gang’s territory. Then, he reached up and loosened his collar.
"Let’s make this quick."
The streets were almost empty now. The sentries above saw him standing there alone and sensed something was wrong. They all aimed their crossbows and gun barrels at him.
"Hey, you—"
Just as they spoke, with a BOOM, a cloud of dust erupted. The figure had already vanished. When they looked, they saw a sunken crater in the ground where he had been.
The soldiers were stunned and confused. Then, they heard a noise from the distance. Looking back, they saw that in a straight line, the barricades on the road and the stacked walls had been blasted apart as if by a cannonball, exploding into a rain of splinters and shattered bricks.
Under Ah Le’s protection, Deng Xin made it outside safely. Just then, a horn honked. They saw a red sports car parked nearby with its door already pushed open. The two of them hurried over.
Ni Qianqian looked them over and said, "Deng Xin? I’m a colleague of Brother Chen. Get in."
Deng Xin said a quick thank you and climbed into the back seat with the large cat and Ah Le.
Ni Qianqian glanced at the cat with interest, then pulled down her goggles. "Come with me. I’ll take you to a safe place."
Seeing Deng Xin looking back with worry, Ni Qianqian chuckled. "Don’t worry. Since Brother Chen promised you, he’ll definitely handle it. Hold on tight."
With that, she stomped on the pedal, and the sports car shot forward with a ROAR.
By this time, Chen Chuan had already arrived in front of the building and stopped. As he came to a halt, the billowing dust cloud he’d kicked up swirled around him before slowly settling.
He looked up at a spire-shaped building—She Ni’s Residence. It was painted gold and silver, the only structure in the area with light-screen capabilities.
Projected onto it was the image of a giant white elephant wearing a pot-shaped crown and holding a treasure banner. This was the "Top Pot Elephant Lord," a deity worshipped by the Shen People.
Numerous armed gang guards were stationed here. Seeing him suddenly appear with such astonishing momentum, they turned pale with shock and raised their guns to aim at him.
But before they could pull their triggers, they were struck by some kind of invisible impact. Their eyes rolled back, their bodies swayed, and they collapsed to the ground with a series of THUDS.
As if he hadn’t seen a thing, Chen Chuan, holding the Snow Monarch Blade, walked along the path toward the building’s entrance.
As he walked at a steady pace, the gang members on either side of the path collapsed one after another, the continuous sound of bodies hitting the ground echoing around him.
Inside the grand hall of the residence, several old men in the traditional attire of the Shen People were seated. Kneeling before them was Tu Nai, his hands bound behind his back.
They seemed to be interrogating Tu Nai, but when they saw the scene outside through the open doors of the hall, their expressions turned to shock, and they involuntarily stood up.
The gang’s Fighters inside the hall, tasked with protecting them, all grew tense and tried to move in front of the elders to shield them with their bodies.
However, one of them, a tall, wrinkled old man, reached out and pushed aside the man in front of him. In a deep voice, he said, "That is Captain Chen of the Processing Bureau. Do not obstruct him. Let him in."
