On the outskirts of Central City’s Fengde District, abandoned high-rises and dilapidated streets were everywhere. At this moment, a great swarm of insects was heading this way.
This was the Skull Gang’s territory. The vast quantities of Alien Algae they cultivated here effectively interfered with the Fumu’s Domain. Coupled with the fact that it was a low-lying area with year-round standing water, the place was virtually defenseless against outside creatures.
And when the swarm of insects arrived, a large number of Skull Gang members crawled out from derelict cars and hollowed-out buildings, watching as the insects flew in one by one.
They then landed on the vines clinging to the ruined buildings and on the surrounding trees, where they rapidly built nests. Soon, some of the insects began to undergo a swift metamorphosis.
The Skull Gang members stared with bloodshot eyes. One of their leaders, however, grew excited and waved a hand back. "Bring the stuff out."
A gang member quickly handed him a metal can. He hung it around his neck and swiftly climbed a tree.
Ignoring the insect bites, he reached the nest and peered inside. Seeing a fat insect writhing within, he grinned, wrapped his legs around the trunk, and then poured the contents of the metal can into his palm. Out came fragments that emitted a faint fluorescent glow.
If Old Qi were here, he would have recognized this as the very substance he had purchased from Yangzhi and resold to this place.
The leader sprinkled the fragments into the nest. After waiting a moment, he saw the insects’ bodies seem to swell slightly. He grinned, quickly climbed down, and then went to another nest in a different tree to repeat the process.
Just half an hour later, blue-green and red cocoons began to appear around the first nest that had been sprinkled with the fragments. They popped up densely on the nearby walls and tree trunks, like blisters from a burn.
As this phenomenon grew more widespread, the gang members below all revealed looks of immense anticipation.
On Motie Mountain, Cao Guiqi sat in the courtyard of his manor. Beneath a shower of falling peach blossom petals, he was practicing calligraphy at an agarwood desk, copying scripts from the old era.
Just then, with a SPLAT, an insect fell from above, landing on the pristine white paper and leaving a small stain. He simply flicked his sleeve, sweeping the insect to the ground.
After finishing the last character, he set down his brush and glanced up. A few scattered insects circled in the swaying treetops. "It seems some have slipped through," he said.
Uncle Ding said from the side, "Only a few, Young Master. The Domain Creatures in the manor have already released their Domains, and we are spraying pesticides in the surrounding area. Not many will get in."
Cao Guiqi looked into the distance. High in the sky, an airship hovered, spraying sheets of chemicals downward. "It’s been over half a month, hasn’t it?" he said.
Uncle Ding bowed slightly. "Rest assured, Young Master. The manor is well-stocked with enough supplies to last for three months. By then, this situation, whatever it may be, should be over. Moreover, the Administrative Affairs Hall has strengthened security on Motie Mountain these past few days. There shouldn’t be any problems."
Cao Guiqi gave a noncommittal response. "Did those people come again yesterday?" he asked.
Uncle Ding replied, "They did. But they refuse to leave, insisting they must see you, Young Master. They even said you’ll regret it if you don’t. Should I have them driven away?"
Cao Guiqi watched the falling petals. "Pay them no mind. The old era has long passed. Those who can’t let go will eventually be washed away by the tides of the new age."
「Underground City District.」
SPLAT! Lu Ke slapped an insect dead against the car window. He grumbled, "What are these things? Why are there so many of them?"
He looked up at the glowing Sun Vine, where a dense swarm of insects was buzzing loudly.
Yu Gang, having just finished his class, pushed the door open. He glanced at the dead insect, then looked up. "The arrival of these insects is unusual," he said. "Chen Chuan warned us to be careful a few days ago. This might be related."
"You think this is what Master was talking about? No way," Lu Ke said, scratching his head. "They’re just little bugs. You can kill them with one slap."
Yu Gang said in a low voice, "It’s better to be safe than sorry. Go see your Senior Sister Nan later. Have her ask the company if there are any special circumstances. And be extra careful for the next few days."
Lu Ke immediately agreed. One couldn’t afford to be careless in a place like the Underground City District. But just as he was about to leave, he was startled. He saw hordes of rats scurrying out of a tunnel, as if migrating.
This was unheard of. In the Underground City District, rats were a common food source; any that appeared would be caught. They usually only dared to hide in dark corners. How could they run so openly in the streets?
After watching for a moment, a deep-seated feeling told him that something was truly wrong. He said at once, "Master, I’ll go right now."
Off the coast of Yinglu District, aboard a ship at sea, Gongying Changxiu was practicing his Saber Techniques on the wide deck. In the distance stood Guan Shangjing and a group of Wind Forest Hall disciples.
Because members of the Esoteric Review Bureau had a long-standing station inside the Ferris Wheel Company and had yet to withdraw, these Fighters from the Outer Ocean could not be stationed within the company during their operations. They could only be quartered at sea.
As Gongying Changxiu swung his blade, he caught a glimpse of a huge cloud of tiny insects heading their way. It was practically a swarm. As it passed over the disciples, it provoked a round of curses.
When the insects neared him, he just flicked his blade lightly. A gentle breeze seemed to pass through the air, and all the insects were swept away by the wind. They spun a few times before being carried off the ship, after which they resumed buzzing about as if nothing had happened.
But after only a few flaps of their wings, they suddenly burst open one by one, splattering their internal tissues. In that instant, a long, continuous belt of mist seemed to explode into existence on the surface of the sea next to the ship.
This was Wind Forest Hall’s Secret Transmission, the "Wind-Chanting Slash." The blade’s strike attached Power to the enemy, which would then detonate. It was a technique that balanced both spirit and Power, capable of felling an enemy unseen. The sight made the hearts of the watching disciples surge with excitement.
Guan Shangjing, however, was silently awestruck. ’These disciples only see the momentum and destructive force of the Saber Technique,’ he thought, ’but I see Gongying Changxiu’s absolutely perfect control over his Power. The number of insects he just killed was precisely three thousand—not one more, not one less.’
He mused, ’Senior Brother Gongying must have received Master’s permission and visited the "Ghost Gate."’
The Ghost Gate was a Rift passed down through generations of the Wind Forest Hall. It was said to be located at the bottom of the sea, and one could only enter after cultivating their physique to a certain level.
He had heard that the beings on the other side of this Rift had been entangled with the Wind Forest Hall for hundreds of years, coexisting and integrating with one another. Therefore, although the place was perilous, it allowed one to achieve twice the results with half the effort in Spiritual Cultivation. Furthermore, one could study and comprehend the various Secret Transmissions left behind by the predecessors of Wind Forest Hall.
However, while Wind Forest Hall had a deep heritage, it was, after all, a relic of the old era. In this new age, one needed a powerful, active Consciousness Body to grasp the future.
At that moment, Gongying Changxiu suddenly stopped. He looked at the Wind Forest Hall disciples standing to the side and pointed his blade at one of them.
"You. Come here. I will bestow upon you the Seal-Shaped Blade of my ’Wind-Chanting Slash.’"
An ecstatic look appeared on the disciple’s face. He responded with a heavy "Yes, sir!" and ran forward. The other disciples behind him all watched with envy.
When the disciple reached Gongying Changxiu, he immediately knelt and prostrated himself, then raised his head to face the sea.
Gongying Changxiu slowly raised his blade. After a moment’s pause, he brought it down, the tip striking the disciple’s brow with perfect accuracy. The disciple shuddered violently, a dazed look appearing in his eyes.
A moment later, he came to his senses. He quickly shuffled backward on his knees, then bowed his head deeply and roared with all his might, "Thank you, Senior Brother Gongying, for bestowing the Seal-Imprint!"
Gongying Changxiu flicked his blade clean, slowly sheathed it, and then walked toward Guan Shangjing. The disciples on both sides bowed and moved out of his way.
Guan Shangjing approached and walked beside him. "Senior Brother Gongying, although Junior Brother Huishilang delivered the challenge letter to the Profound Palace Building, there was an unexpected incident. It was intercepted by Mishiro Ara."
"Mishiro Ara of Langtao Hall?"
Gongying Changxiu looked intrigued. "So he’s the one who received that strike?"
Guan Shangjing nodded. "Yes, Senior Brother Gongying. This Mishiro Ara seems to not know what’s good for him."
Gongying Changxiu waved a hand dismissively. "How can the actions of a hero be measured by the standards of ordinary men?" With Mishiro Ara’s interference, this battle had become much more interesting.
"Should we send another challenge letter, Senior Brother?"
"There’s no need. That Mr. Chen should already know of my arrival by now. Let’s leave some suspense for this battle... Hm?"
He suddenly looked out at the sea, for he had just seen a flicker of light.
Guan Shangjing’s expression turned serious.
The other disciples hadn’t noticed the anomaly, but a Third Limit Fighter like him saw it clearly. That wasn’t a flash of lightning. It was a fissure created by the collision of two worlds, even if it was only for an instant.
He understood. This must mean the Fumu had become unstable. It seemed the situation would change within the next few days. The days to follow would be the critical moment that decided the future of the Ferris Wheel Company.
In his dorm room at the Profound Palace Building, Chen Chuan sat on the sofa, carefully polishing the Snow Monarch Blade with a cloth.
With each encounter, the blade absorbed something from his opponents’ weapons, and it had undoubtedly grown tougher and sharper than before.
In his recent clashes, whenever there was a direct collision of weapons, his blade was always able to cut through the other.
This was likely caused by whatever it had first absorbed from Xiong Jianyi.
But he still didn’t know what that "something" was.
He didn’t dwell on it, however. The blade was in his hands, under his control. He would be able to directly observe any future changes. Just as he finished polishing the blade and gave it a twirl, a flash of light, like a streak of lightning, flickered outside his window.
He froze and looked outside. He then saw several similar flashes high in the sky. He immediately knew what it was and thought to himself, ’It seems it’s about to begin.’
