Chapter 576 306: Interception

Chen Chuan glanced at the four approaching people, seemingly unconcerned. He held his Realm Token and checked the time displayed on it.

The fight with Gongying Changxiu had delayed them by a few minutes, and any more time wasted could be trouble over there.

So, he said to Yuan Qiuyuan and the others, "I'm leaving these few to you. Catch up with me as soon as you've dealt with them."

Yuan Qiuyuan tossed the scabbard of the Snow Monarch Blade to him and said, "Captain, leave it to us."

Chen Chuan caught it, sheathing his blade. As for the Flowing Swiftly on the ground, his team members would naturally take care of it after they were done, so he didn't need to worry about it.

He glanced at the map again. Since the location wasn't too far away, he didn't take a car this time. Instead, he fixed his direction, stomped his foot, and with a BOOM, a cloud of shattered stone erupted as he vanished from the spot.

Inside the command hall, Specialist Liang was monitoring the situations everywhere. He couldn't relax his guard on any front, but the Rift currently occupied by Chang Kuanghai was undoubtedly the most troublesome.

Even the faster of the two emergency response teams would need twenty minutes to get there.

By the time they arrived, it was hard to say how large the Rift would have grown. The good news, however, was that the Rift's stability meant the split-off subunit was still there. If they could deal with the obstruction in time, they could still retrieve it.

Just then, an intelligence officer reported to him, "Specialist, Captain Chen is moving rapidly toward that Rift."

"Hm?"

Specialist Liang was a little surprised. Wasn't Chen Chuan being held up by Gongying Changxiu and his group?

The intelligence officer swallowed hard and said, "Gongying Changxiu... has been slain by Captain Chen."

'Slain?'

'How much time has passed?'

Specialist Liang glanced at the time and realized his feeling was correct. He immediately pulled up the recording of the incident. After seeing the scene of Gongying Changxiu being decapitated in a single strike, he fell silent.

For a moment, he didn't know whether Gongying Changxiu's reputation was undeserved, or if he had... consistently underestimated this man's power.

At the same time, Chen Chuan was heading in the direction indicated by the map, but his journey was not smooth. The scattered Rifts that appeared from time to time constantly obstructed him.

These were all unstable Rifts, often spewing powerful air currents and strange creatures. If someone charged in without finding the correct path, they might not be able to get back out right away.

Moreover, there were still pedestrians on the streets. Some fearless people, drunkards, and addicts were still wandering outside, many of them lying on the ground, twitching after being bitten by flying insects.

This forced him to be cautious, but even so, his speed was far greater than if he had simply driven.

Meanwhile, on a street near the Rift up ahead, Astrid stood atop a tall building. Above her floated a suspended, balloon-like lifeform.

This was a small Domain Creature provided to their team by the Porlon Company, and it was currently searching and transmitting information from a nine-kilometer radius.

The Porlon Company had always been world-class in the fields of super-sensory perception and information transmission. This kind of small-scale, localized information broadcasting was their specialty.

Just then, she saw an image of Chen Chuan appear on her Realm Token. She looked at it and blurted out, "I know him."

Sigrid's voice came from the Realm Token, "Yes, he's the one who almost sent you to the Heroic Spirit Hall last time. He's heading toward this intersection now. The company wants us to hold him off for at least twenty minutes."

"Alright."

Astrid said, "Good thing the company isn't asking us to kill him."

Sigrid said in surprise, "You're afraid to kill him?"

Astrid rolled her eyes. "I'm afraid he'll kill me."

Although she had been controlled by the strange power of the armor that day, a part of her consciousness had remained lucid. The final moment of her defeat was deeply seared into her mind; she knew how terrifying this opponent was.

Sigrid said, "What are you afraid of? You've been equipped with the company's latest Implant. This is cutting-edge technology. You even completed all the testing for it yourself. Plus, it integrates perfectly with Rift Shuttling tactics. Just think about it, it's amazing, isn't it?"

"Yeah, amazing."

Astrid looked down below. 'But it depends on what kind of enemy we're facing.'

The Porlon Company's Super-Sensory Implant, the Rift Trapping Organization, the transmission sensor cables, plus her own innate Spiritual Ability—it was enough to deal with an ordinary Fighter, but...

As she was thinking, Sigrid warned her:

"He's here!"

Chen Chuan had just turned a street corner and was halfway down the block when he suddenly stopped, his body coming to an abrupt halt amid a sonic boom.

Because ahead of him, a web of crisscrossing cables had appeared, stretching between the tall buildings on either side and blocking off the latter half of the street. Furthermore, numerous Rifts flickered in and out of existence, their opening and closing frequency far higher than anywhere else, like countless bolts of lightning converging in one spot.

At the same time, a silver light flashed above, and a long spear fell from the sky, sinking into the ground not far in front of him with a THWIP.

He looked up and saw a figure in Knight Armor standing on tiptoe on a high platform. And that armor... it was clearly the one he had seen on the Shepherdess at the opera house.

'The Xi Hui Opera House has backers too.'

'The Porlon Company?'

The Knight now leaped down from the tall building, landing in front of him with a CLANG. They crouched, placing both hands on the ground to disperse the force of the impact.

After a moment, the Knight used the ground to launch forward in a powerful leap. As they charged, they smoothly pulled the spear from the ground, then rotated it in their hands, leveled it, and thrust it toward him!

Chen Chuan watched the approaching figure. Their stance, rhythm, and Power were all good. But... they were too slow!

He seemed to move, his body vanishing in an instant. The next moment, he suddenly appeared in front of the Knight, simultaneously throwing a punch at their abdomen.

But just as his fist was about to make contact, a flicker of light appeared, and the Knight vanished. His punch only struck the shimmering Rift.

At that exact moment, the Knight emerged from a Rift behind him, thrusting the spear. But halfway through the motion, he spun around and caught it with a SMACK. The Knight didn't try to struggle for it, immediately letting go. Their body flickered along with a Rift and vanished once more.

Chen Chuan took the spear, snapped it in two, and threw it to the ground. His opponent seemed to be able to travel through the Rifts, making them difficult to catch. He didn't have time to waste here.

He stomped his foot, leaped over one of the long cables in front of him, and continued charging toward the location of the main Rift.

But this time, before he even landed, a Rift flickered open, and the Knight abruptly appeared at his side. They threw several flying knives at him, then rolled upon landing on the ground and disappeared into another flashing Rift.

Chen Chuan casually slapped the knives away. His figure didn't stop at all; he continued running after he landed.

Seeing that he wasn't stopping, the Knight grew a little anxious. They began to appear frequently at his side, sometimes stabbing with a sword, sometimes throwing projectiles. They appeared in all directions—in front, behind, left, and right—but regardless of success, they never lingered. After making an attack, they would immediately retreat into a Rift.

Chen Chuan could tell that his opponent was able to move freely through the Rifts, likely by using the long cables stretched across the road to sense the Rifts' appearance and disappearance, using the vibrations of the cables to guide their attacks.

'But that alone probably isn't enough. There must be someone nearby acting as some kind of guide via Spiritual Sensing. Otherwise, it would be impossible to so accurately pinpoint my moving position.'

However, he was in a hurry and had no intention of finding them.

'Besides...'

Suddenly, the Rift in front of him opened once more. As expected, the Knight leaped out, thrusting a sword at him. Before it could hit, they were already moving to duck into another Rift.

But at that very moment, before she could fully enter it, a hand suddenly shot out and, with a CLACK, grabbed her faceplate.

After so many attacks, Chen Chuan had figured out his opponent's rhythm. This time, he struck and accurately caught her.

He tightened his five fingers, and the entire helmet was instantly crushed, the metal letting out a screeching, twisting sound. However, as he applied the force, he found that it was empty.

The rest of the armor beneath the helmet also came CLATTERING down, scattering across the ground. It seemed there was no one inside at all.

A glint flashed in Chen Chuan's eyes. 'The person inside must have used Rift Shuttling again to escape, leaving only the armor behind. That reaction speed and mastery over the Rifts' opening and closing is quite exquisite.'

'But if you appear before me again, don't think you'll escape so easily.'

'As for the other one...'

He glanced in a certain direction. He didn't have time to deal with it now. Power surged from his feet, the air around him let out a roar, and in a flash, he was already gone from this place.

A short while after he left, a shaken Sigrid emerged from her hiding spot. She looked in the direction he had gone, feeling a sense of helplessness. 'Forget twenty minutes... we couldn't even hold him for two.'

She then looked at the spot where Astrid had just escaped into the Rift. She had to find her quickly, or she might get lost in there.

Chen Chuan encountered no similar obstacles after that. Moreover, that series of attacks, which couldn't even be called a fight, had actually pushed his spirit slightly higher. So it wasn't a total loss.

In just a few minutes, he arrived at the location indicated on the map.

At this moment, the other teams that had received the order were still on their way. The fastest would arrive in a quarter of an hour.

When he arrived, he was met with the sight of security guards' bodies strewn all over the ground. In the distance, a car was engulfed in roaring flames, and further beyond that, a massive Rift hung in the air.

Bright light poured out from it, and a flurry of snowflakes emerged, blanketing the surrounding ground in a thick layer of snow.

A tall figure stood before the Rift. A long-handled axe was stuck in the ground behind him. The falling snowflakes were repelled by the Power radiating from his skin, not a single one landing on him.

As he drew closer, he could also see the corpses of various ferocious creatures from the other side, slain and scattered around the man.

And at this moment, the man looked up at him and said in a deep voice, "I've been waiting for you."
