Chapter 586 - 316: At the Gate

In an instant, Yu Lie was in front of a Cavalry Soldier. He punched out, hitting the horse’s belly, and the Power shot through the animal’s body and into the Knight above.

Without a second glance, he shot under the bellies of the horses, one after another. He struck out with a fist or palm as he passed each one, leaving a staccato of impacts in his wake.

The Cavalry Soldiers froze for a moment before they and their Dragon-nosed Horses collapsed, one after another. They were dead before they hit the ground.

In the span of a single breath, the entire squad of Cavalry Soldiers that had emerged, including their Cavalry Captain, had been annihilated.

Chen Bitong made no move from beginning to end, watching it all with a detached air.

Yu Lie glanced at the Rift and said, feigning nonchalance, "The splintered entity is on the other side, right? Couldn’t they use it to take control of this Rift?"

Fang Zhixin said, "Don’t worry. It may look like a single Rift, but it’s actually a junction connecting three passages. The splintered entity only hides in the space between two worlds. As long as they cross from there to our side, the Rift will only connect their world to ours. That is, unless they stop coming over completely."

Yu Lie said, "So what do we do? Just stand guard and wait for them?" He looked forward. "That must have been their vanguard, right? When the vanguard doesn’t report back, will they really send more?"

Staring at the Rift, Fang Zhixin said seriously, "They won’t abandon such a stable foothold. They will definitely gather their forces on the other side and charge through all at once. Our job is to stop anyone who tries to cross."

Yu Lie was getting confused. ’If we’re supposed to stop them, then why set this all up?’

But his persona was that of someone who didn’t like to dig into things, who acted indifferent about most matters. Asking two more questions was already pushing it. He suppressed his curiosity and said with a shrug, "Fine. We’ll take them down one by one as they come."

Fang Zhixin glanced at him. "I’m not just talking about those from the other side. I’m talking about people coming from behind us, too."

Yu Lie grinned, talking tough. "Makes no difference."

The moment he spoke, a muffled gunshot suddenly rang out in the distance. Startled, he whipped his head around to look.

Chen Bitong stood with his hand held in a catching motion. He casually opened his fingers. With a CLINK, a sniper bullet nearly ten centimeters long dropped to the ground.

He looked forward. A group of people was approaching.

Old Hu spoke into his Realm Token. "Save your strength. You’re standing right inside his Domain. The moment you stepped in, he knew everything you were doing."

The sniper hiding on the rooftop took a look. ’It’s at least three hundred meters away,’ he thought. ’Can a Domain really be that large?’

Looking ahead, Old Hu said, "Don’t doubt it. This is Chen Bitong, after all." He turned to the mercenaries behind him. "You’ve been paid, so it’s time to work."

Even after seeing Chen Bitong catch a bullet with his bare hands, the mercenaries didn’t back down. "Of course," one said. "We’re professionals."

Old Hu said nothing more. He gestured for Ah Han and the four other team members to follow, then walked toward Chen Bitong’s position as if he hadn’t a care in the world.

Chen Bitong waited for him to approach. "Old Hu. I didn’t expect to see you. Has it been five years already? You joined the Temporary Special Action Committee?"

Old Hu spoke in a raspy voice. "What difference does it make where I join?" He removed his gloves and pulled a document from his breast pocket.

"By order of the Temporary Special Action Committee, I am here to arrest the suspected traitor, Chen Bitong. Chen, are you coming with me willingly, or do I have to make you?"

Chen Bitong’s voice was grave. "If you want something, you’ll have to take it yourself."

Old Hu stared at him with cold, dark eyes but made no rash moves.

He and Chen Bitong had been on the same exploration team; he knew how formidable Chen was. Five years had passed in a flash, and Chen Bitong’s reputation had only grown. Though Old Hu had also improved, the Chen Bitong of today was different from the one he once knew.

He gave a signal. The four team members Mr. Chu had assigned him rushed forward without a moment’s hesitation.

At that moment, gunshots erupted from the high-rises on either side. Chen Bitong’s men, long since positioned, had opened fire. But the four attackers were all wearing Protective Clothing, so they simply raised their arms to shield their faces.

When Yu Lie, standing in the back, saw Old Hu and the four team members, he knew the people from the Action Committee had arrived. ’Finally,’ he thought, relieved. But it wasn’t time to reveal his hand yet. He feigned a move to step forward, but Fang Zhixin stretched out an arm to block him.

"That man is an old friend of Teacher’s. Teacher can handle him on his own."

As they spoke, the confrontation ahead had already reached its conclusion. The four men had all thrown punches at Chen Bitong, but not a single one had landed.

The fist of the closest man stopped half a meter away from its target.

It was a bizarre sight. Their punches were aimed correctly, and Chen Bitong hadn’t moved from his spot, yet they had somehow misjudged his position. Every fist struck empty air.

And it wasn’t just that. As if their strength had been instantly siphoned away, the four of them swayed and then collapsed to the ground.

Old Hu, watching from behind, saw clearly what had happened. It was an influence on their minds, a sensory dislocation that made the four believe Chen Bitong was standing right where their fists landed.

Moreover, due to this spiritual guidance, they had recklessly unleashed all of their Power, even igniting their own Essence Blood in an instant. As a result, they not only suffered internal injuries but also passed out from total exhaustion.

When a Fighter’s spirit and body reach the state of Perfection, they can crush any lesser Fighter with either their Spiritual Power or physical strength alone. And Chen Bitong had no weakness in either domain.

He gave Chen Bitong a long, hard look, but still didn’t move himself. "Ah Han," he said. "You’re up."

The man called Ah Han stepped forward without hesitation. He tore off his over-shirt, revealing a body covered in scales and rippling with muscle.

He shot Chen Bitong a threatening grin, his mouth full of sharp fangs. His eyes had the round pupils of a lion or tiger; he had clearly undergone extensive Implant modifications.

His exposed muscles were so massive they were almost suffocating to look at, yet when he stepped forward, he moved with a light, nimble grace. This indicated excellent body coordination and no lack of speed.

He stared intently at Chen Bitong for a few moments, the space between his eyebrows twitching as if bracing for something. After a moment of confirmation, he shot forward at a diagonal. He was so fast that even Fang Zhixin and Yu Lie, watching from behind, could barely track his movement.

Once he was at Chen Bitong’s side, the man lunged forward. But before he reached his target, long tendrils suddenly burst from his back, whipping out to completely ensnare Chen Bitong’s body.

He felt the tendrils connect with something solid and rejoiced internally. He tightened them with all his might, then raised a hand, his sharp claws slashing down toward Chen Bitong’s face!

But before his claws could land, he found that Chen Bitong simply ignored the bindings. With a slight lift of his hand, the tough tendrils snapped, joint by joint, like brittle twigs. Then, two of Chen’s fingers tapped him between the eyebrows, striking faster than he could react. In that instant, Ah Han thought he heard something shatter.

From the perspective of the onlookers, a bloody hole blew out the back of his head. A spray of Implant tissue and organic fluid erupted from the wound.

His massive body flew backward, landing on the ground with limbs splayed wide. A series of cracks and pops echoed from all over his frame; the sounds alone made it clear that his body was being twisted and torn apart by some internal force.

’String Void Force...’

Old Hu tore his eyes away from the twitching corpse and looked at Chen Bitong. "Do you know who that was? Old Chai. Surely you remember him. The Old Chai who followed you, who took a spear for you. Ah Han was his son."

Chen Bitong was silent for a moment. "I met him once when he was a child," he finally said.

Old Hu stared hard into his eyes. "You just killed your comrade’s son. The son of a man who died saving your life. How do you feel right now?"

From the back, Fang Zhixin stepped forward. "Chai Zihan, during his service with the Defense Department, frequently bullied and abused his subordinates and stole credit from common soldiers."

"Once, after discovering a squadmate had filed a report on him, he killed the man on the spot and framed him for attacking with a gun out of insubordination. Afterward, Internal Affairs stripped the man’s family of all their benefits."

"Even that wasn’t enough. He wouldn’t leave the family alone, having someone douse the wife and children in oil and burn them alive. Doesn’t a monster like that deserve to die?"

Old Hu said, "Do you have no regard for the bonds of old comradeship?"

Chen Bitong’s voice was heavy. "If he came at me again, I would kill him again."

A cold sneer touched Old Hu’s lips. At that exact moment, he seemed to sense something and looked up toward the Rift. The light over there flickered violently.

Yu Lie was closest to the Rift. Sensing something was wrong, he spun around just in time to see something come crashing out.

With a shout, he lunged forward and pressed out with both palms, trying to block it. But the moment he made contact, his expression changed. The force of the charge was too immense; his entire body began to tremble.

Still, he gritted his teeth and held his ground.

But it was useless. The creature charged out of the Rift, unyielding. He couldn’t slow it down in the slightest.

The creature was now fully revealed: a massive beetle, around three meters tall, its body encased in a metallic-looking carapace. As it continued to push forward, Yu Lie finally lost his footing. The brutish force flung him aside, and he went tumbling across the ground.

The beetle, meanwhile, continued its ferocious charge.

Chen Bitong was standing right in its path.

He showed no intention of moving. The beetle thundered through him, but it was like passing through a phantom. Meeting no resistance, it charged straight for Old Hu, who stood farther back.

Old Hu’s eyes were cold and dark. He simply raised his hand, pressing two fingers together. When they reached a certain height, he slashed them down violently.

A flicker of crimson light streaked through the air. In an instant, the entire beetle was sliced cleanly in half, from head to tail. It continued forward from its own momentum for a few meters before its two halves fell away to either side.

Inside, its tissues were completely charred. Old Hu stood there, his masked face unreadable. The tips of his fingers glowed crimson, wisps of steam rising from them.
