Director Eagle Tail’s voice seemed to echo in the meeting room. No one below spoke for a moment, apparently still reeling from the shocking images.
Director Eagle Tail waited a moment before pushing himself up with his cane. He looked at everyone and said in a grave tone,
"Gentlemen, the Central City Government has dispatched armed forces to surround us. They clearly intend to annihilate our Ferris Wheel Company. But we cannot back down. We must show the Central City Government our resolve to fight, no matter the cost!"
He declared, "I propose we activate the Consciousness Body, Wu Qi. If they want to destroy us, then they must be prepared to pay the price: the destruction of the entire Yinglu District."
The director presiding over the meeting frowned at him. "Director Eagle Tail, you’re being too extreme."
Director Eagle Tail retorted sharply, "At a time like this, do we have any better options?"
The other director shook his head. "It hasn’t come to that yet."
He looked at all the directors present and said gravely, "Gentlemen, Central City’s armed forces are attacking us in such a hurry—not even hesitating to strike during the Fumu’s division. They must have bypassed the City Council. We can try to use a secure line to contact the council and have them halt the advance of Central City’s military."
The directors present had been reeling from the news of the fleet’s defeat, then were blindsided by the arrival of government troops. They had been unable to think clearly or rationally. Now, reminded by his words, they slowly began to regain their composure.
After some thought, they all agreed it was a good course of action.
The Central City Council would surely use this as an opportunity to extort more from them, but that was nothing compared to the company’s survival. As long as the company was saved, they still had a chance.
They had prevailed for a decade; they could do it again.
But Director Eagle Tail shook his head. "That might have worked before, but it’s too late now. Gentlemen, the government’s troops are already at our doorstep, and Airships have locked down the skies. They will undoubtedly jam all information Domains and block all routes in and out. They won’t let us get a single message out."
One of the directors couldn’t help but retort, "How will we know if we don’t try?"
Director Eagle Tail didn’t press the issue. "Then try. But while we’re waiting, we can’t let the government’s forces crush us. We need to arm all company personnel and hold our ground until the message gets out."
No one objected to this. The board of directors quickly came to a consensus and issued an order to Guan Shangjing, granting him most of the security permissions. Simultaneously, they began trying to circumvent the information blockade to contact the City Council.
Upon receiving his instructions from the company’s top brass, Guan Shangjing immediately began to mobilize and organize his personnel.
However, they had previously dispatched a security team of about a thousand to seize the splinter entity, which had all but drained the Ferris Wheel Company of its main fighting force.
Now, fewer than two hundred official armed security personnel remained. Even if they armed other employees, it wouldn’t be enough. As a result, many of the company’s outer fortifications and firing positions could not be activated or manned, forcing them to defend only a few key locations.
As he was deploying his forces, the enemy attack began. First, the Airships hovering high above flew over. Once they were above the outskirts of the Ferris Wheel Building, their bay doors opened, and they began dropping one high-explosive bomb after another.
Although the Ferris Wheel Building was equipped with long-range machine guns on its roof, they posed little threat to the high-flying Airships. The defenders could only watch helplessly as it happened.
Amid the violent explosions, some of the company’s outer fortifications, firing positions, perimeter walls, and even the overhead electrified barrier grid were quickly eliminated.
This wave of bombing lasted for over half an Hour. When the Airships finally withdrew, they left behind nothing but billowing clouds of thick smoke.
Xu Chan observed from a rooftop before issuing a second order to the forces below.
A moment later, dense swarms of biological combat weapons surged from their positions toward the Ferris Wheel Building, some flying, others leaping.
To deal with the Fumu’s division, the Administrative Affairs Hall had specifically procured a large batch of Combat Mantises from Compound Eye Company. They had proven to be highly effective.
However, not only were these combat weapons expensive, but their specialized High-Energy Nutrient Supplements were also costly. Therefore, the majority of the swarm consisted of Modified Creatures developed by Dashun itself.
Gunfire immediately erupted from the Ferris Wheel Building. Even some of the hidden firing positions were forced to open fire. The creatures were small, fast, and incredibly aggressive. They were also pervasive and seemingly endless. Once they got inside, ordinary combat personnel would be virtually helpless against them.
The Combat Mantises in particular were incredibly fast and destructive. Nothing short of a Fighter could stop them.
The company, in turn, unleashed its own remaining biological weapons. The two sides clashed in the air and on the ground, tumbling and tearing at each other in a brutal melee.
While the fierce battle raged at the front, the sea behind the Ferris Wheel Company began to churn. GURGLE... Many creatures emerged from the water. They resembled a cross between a lizard and a fish, with four legs and a long, finned tail.
They scrambled swiftly up the sloping seawall, crossing the area that had once been protected by electrified grids and firing positions. Ignoring the complex terrain and obstacles, they began to climb the walls of the building itself. Whenever they found a crack or opening, they squeezed inside.
These were amphibious combat organisms developed by Canglong Company, designed to climb from underwater onto ships to attack personnel. The United Fleet had brought them along for the naval battle, but Ferris Wheel Company’s fleet was defeated so quickly that they were never deployed. Now, however, was a chance to test their effectiveness.
With the advent of biological weapons and personnel armed with Implants, the face of warfare had changed. Old-fashioned armies were largely ineffective unless they were of a certain massive scale.
However, Fighters still held a pivotal role on the battlefield. Even a seemingly classical military force like the Old Imperial Family’s army still possessed immense combat strength, thanks to the participation of a sufficient number of Fighters.
Xu Chan stood at the rear, observing the battlefield. Despite being a Fighter himself, he didn’t rush to the front lines. Instead, he adhered to a methodical, by-the-book tactical approach.
Bombardment by Airship, elimination of firing positions, assault with Modified Creatures. If the attack stalled, he would repeat the process: more bombing and demolition, more clearing of firing positions, then another wave of Modified Creatures. In short, he was using his superior forces to steamroll forward.
If the enemy’s Fighters appeared, his side had Fighters serving as long-range marksmen to counter them. Such specialists might be rare elsewhere, but the Defense Department could mobilize a considerable number. Under this threat, the Fighters inside the Ferris Wheel Company couldn’t risk showing themselves outside.
In less than an Hour, the assault broke through the Ferris Wheel Company’s outer defenses. Swarms of Modified Creatures began to infiltrate the building’s interior.
In front of Xu Chan was a biological device that projected a fan-shaped beam of light upward, displaying the current situation inside the Ferris Wheel Building.
Among the Modified Creatures, some were not just for combat; they were also responsible for transmitting Domain information. This allowed the command to see the situation inside the building in real-time and adjust their tactics accordingly.
There was no need to worry about the cost of these losses. Once Ferris Wheel Company fell, its assets on the various islands would be seized by the Dashun Government and the National Enterprises, which would be more than enough to cover the expenditure.
Meanwhile, beneath the Ferris Wheel Building, most of the company’s directors had already transferred to a submarine, where they watched the transmitted footage from the battle.
If things took a turn for the worse, they planned to make their escape from here.
However, they were hesitant. Canglong Company had long anticipated such a move and would surely have deployed underwater Modified Creatures in the coastal area. If they tried to leave, even if the creatures couldn’t sink them, they could be tracked and harassed. They wouldn’t get far.
But the situation wasn’t completely hopeless yet. They had already dispatched a small underwater team to swim out along the coastline. As long as the team could get past the range of the Domain jamming and enter the city, they could find a way to contact the City Council and put a stop to all this.
Inside the building, Guan Shangjing was leading a group of armed company personnel, fighting off the combat creatures that were constantly pouring in.
Fortunately, he still had one last squad of internal guards at his disposal. The company had spent a fortune on them. They were equipped with top-of-the-line Implants and clad in heavy protective armor. Every single one was an expert with both firearms and cold steel, allowing them to handle the seemingly endless tide of combat creatures with composure.
However, after only a short while, the situation changed. The next wave of Modified Creatures came in carrying explosives. They would detonate violently upon getting close, causing heavy casualties among the elite guards.
Guan Shangjing had no choice but to retreat toward the underground entrance. Even now, he hadn’t seen a single one of the enemy’s human soldiers. The assault was being carried out entirely by Modified Creatures. Clearly, the enemy commander was playing it very safe.
This tactic was costly in terms of materiel, but it kept personnel losses to a minimum and gave the defenders no opportunity to counter-attack effectively.
’I can’t hold out much longer like this,’ he thought. He called over a security captain, telling him to take command. Guan Shangjing himself hurried to a spacious, empty training hall at the rear. There, he bowed to a massive figure whose back was turned to him.
"Monarch Tie Cheng, the situation is critical! We have no choice but to ask for your help. I hope you will honor your promise!"
The man was over two meters tall even while sitting. His body was broad and stout, like a small mountain. He was continuously stuffing Nutrition Paste into his mouth, but upon hearing Guan Shangjing’s words, his movements paused.
At that exact moment, a shockwave seemed to ripple out from within the Ferris Wheel Building. All the combat creatures fighting inside the building froze as if struck by a hammer, then collapsed in unison.
It wasn’t just inside. The effect extended to the combat creatures within a radius of several dozen meters outside the building. Any that drew near either tumbled to the ground or dropped from the sky and the building’s walls. In an instant, a clear space had formed in a circle all around the building’s perimeter.
