As a father, his actions could be described as kicking someone when they’re down.
Julie Sampton was hospitalized in critical condition, and he didn’t visit her even once. In Julie’s heart, he failed as a father, so Julie doesn’t have a shred of familial affection for him.
Especially due to the coldness he showed towards mom during the divorce, Julie protected mom and has been living abroad all this time. Bright Sampton even suspects that if Julie saw on Twitter that their father was arrested for fraud, she’d probably want to celebrate with firecrackers.
"Stay here for a few days, and I’ll make some dishes you like." Jane Sampson patted Bright Sampton’s head. "When Julie arrives, I’ll accompany you to the airport to pick her up."
"No need. Staying at the base for a long time isn’t really feasible. You’re pregnant now, and shouldn’t worry so much about my matters. By the time Julie gets off the airplane, it’ll be very late, and I can go pick her up by myself." Bright Sampton wasn’t confused enough to make a pregnant woman go to such a far place late at night to accompany him in picking up Julie.
"Don’t use your own car." James Black stood up from the study and handed Bright Sampton the house keys. "You know the location of the garage where my car and your sister’s car are. Go pick a car that hasn’t been used much by myself or your sister to avoid reporters recognizing you from the license plate number and following you around."
"How long haven’t those cars been used? Can they still start?" Jane Sampson looked at James Black skeptically, with an expression saying ’are you getting muddled, honorable elder?’ staring at James Black.
The cars Jane Sampson often used were just one or two, plus the car that James Black commonly drove. Back then, when they purchased a parking space, the garage location was chosen near the elevator entrance.
But James Black also had several other luxury cars that weren’t often used, parked in relatively corner spots where other cars wouldn’t pass. Jane Sampson hadn’t even glanced in that direction, only knowing that several of James Black’s cars were parked there.
"Even if brother-in-law’s cars aren’t often used, there’s someone who regularly takes them for maintenance." Bright Sampton rubbed his forehead. "Sister, didn’t you know?"
Bright Sampton had seen those cars; my goodness, each one was a luxury car, yet each was so understated that those with untrained eyes couldn’t recognize their value at all.
Bright Sampton heard that these cars were gifts given to James Black from the Black Family gradually after he became an adult, and one was even bought by James Black himself.
A man who isn’t short of money and doesn’t have a few luxury cars to hold the fort, well, he isn’t considered a normal man.
"Why would I know?" Jane Sampson shrugged.
"Just like the luxury goods, purses, and jewelry you have. Even if you don’t use them, isn’t there still someone who regularly takes them to professional institutions for maintenance? Otherwise, when you remember those purses and jewelry you’ve forgotten, how can they still be so dazzling and glamorous when you think of them last minute?" Bright Sampton retorted.
"I thought that’s because they’re expensive." Jane Sampson truly hadn’t paid much attention to the valuable things in her cloakroom.
But she knew Brooke Black regularly arranged for people to come help organize them, so Jane Sampson thought it was just surface-level organizing, at most using a cloth to wipe them.
"With such naivety, how do you manage to possess so many good things?" Bright Sampton issued a soul-searching question to Jane Sampson.
Jane Sampson seriously contemplated for a moment and responded to Bright Sampson, "Because I’m the chosen one? Don’t know if this answer satisfies you?"
