Chapter 102: Chapter 102: Makima
He did not know whether he should call it the Control Devil or just call her Makima. If the Control Devil had already come to the human world, then she probably already had the name Makima as well.
Curious as to whether the Control Devil had already reached the human world, Kotone Asaba immediately checked the Affinity Codex’s information.
Through the Affinity Codex, he learned that the Control Devil had already arrived in the human world and was currently in the Soviet Union.
The Control Devil’s power allowed her to control creatures she believed were beneath her, but it was not entirely subjective. It was very necessary to properly explain Makima’s ability, because there was far too much debate over this.
This was a little complicated. The Control Devil could subjectively control others, but not to the point of blind overconfidence.
For example, when it came to Pochita, the Control Devil believed she had to defeat Pochita before she could control him. She did not simply control him based on her own subjective belief.
In simple terms, the ability might be overconfident, but her rationality guaranteed that she would not be completely overconfident.
Otherwise, she would be outright invincible, punching Pochita and stomping the Darkness Devil. Why would she have been spawn-camped and instantly killed by the Darkness Devil the moment she returned to Hell?
Actually, the War Devil’s ability had similar traits. It was overconfident, but not completely overconfident. It believed one million yen was enough to buy an aquarium and turn it into a weapon. If you really wanted to nitpick, an aquarium could make more than that in a single day, but War really could turn it into a weapon.
If she believed one million yen was enough to buy it, then it was enough. Once it became hers, she could make it into a weapon. But without paying money at all, she could not buy it, so she still had to spend at least some money. That made it overconfident, but not completely.
Kotone Asaba suspected that the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse all had this kind of overconfident ability. Control and War could already be confirmed. The Famine Devil’s ability was still unclear for now, but what was known was that Famine had forcibly taken War away in exchange for nothing more than a hat. Her power was very likely related to a tilted scale, so she was also overconfident.
Since the three sisters were all like this, Death was probably similar too.
The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse?
More like the Four Overconfident Sisters!
Since the Control Devil had already come to the human world, Kotone Asaba naturally had to find her at once. He absolutely could not let her come into contact with the Japanese Cabinet.
The Control Devil was still in the Soviet Union right now, which meant the Japanese Cabinet had not discovered her yet. She had probably only just taken the Hell Devil bus to the human world.
"Sorry, something urgent came up. I need to leave for a while. I’m not sure how long it’ll take me to come back."
Kotone Asaba said this to Reze and Akane Sawatari.
"It’s okay, Coach. Go handle your business. I can go to Kyoto Public Safety whenever."
Akane Sawatari hurriedly replied.
She was no longer all that short on money now. If she could not go to Kyoto Public Safety today, she would only feel a little regret at most.
Reze could tell from Kotone Asaba’s expression that it must be something very important, so she did not say anything either.
After that, Kotone Asaba immediately entered the Kamui dimension and transferred to the Control Devil’s location.
The Soviet Union, Moscow, in front of a pet shop.
A young woman stood outside the glass window of the pet shop, looking as though she were in a daze. In reality, she was staring fixedly at a Siberian Husky inside the shop.
The young woman had long red hair hanging loose around her shoulders. She wore a simple white dress, and her eyes were golden ringed eyes. Her delicate features did not contain the slightest trace of emotion.
Coincidentally, this pet shop was the same one Kotone Asaba and Reze had visited before.
[Codex Entry Activated: Control Devil]
[Reward Obtained: Constitution +1]
[Current Affinity: 0%]
Looking at the Control Devil in front of the pet shop, Kotone Asaba noticed that she was clearly slightly smaller than Makima in the original story.
She looked about eighteen years old, though her figure was still her figure. At the very least, she was not as small as Nayuta.
It seemed humanoid devils could also grow, but they probably settled into a fixed form at a certain stage. In any case, they definitely would not age.
Looking at the young Control Devil in front of him, Kotone Asaba did not know how to approach her for a moment.
He observed for a while and noticed that the Control Devil kept staring through the glass at the Husky inside the pet shop.
Kotone Asaba suddenly thought of something and naturally walked to the Control Devil’s side.
Even when he stood shoulder to shoulder beside her, the Control Devil did not move her gaze in the slightest, as though she had not noticed him at all.
"Do you really like that Husky?"
At that moment, Kotone Asaba spoke.
He used Japanese directly. He could only be certain that Makima should know Japanese. She probably knew English too.
However, he still received no answer. Just as he was about to switch topics and try speaking to her again, the Control Devil finally opened her mouth.
"Husky? Are you talking about that dog?"
Kotone Asaba nodded. "That’s right. It’s a Siberian Husky, though a lot of people like to call them Huskies."
"Husky... according to how you humans define liking something, then yes, I do like it very much."
The Control Devil spoke slowly.
"Putting it that way, are you not human?"
Kotone Asaba followed the topic and asked.
At that moment, the Control Devil’s gaze shifted to Kotone Asaba. Her face remained expressionless.
"I am human."
Kotone Asaba pretended not to know anything and stopped touching that subject.
"If you like Huskies, why not go inside and take a look?"
"No need. I don’t have any money."
The Control Devil said, "I need a place to live. Can you help me?"
"...Sure."
Kotone Asaba was slightly startled, but he did not show it on his face.
He had not expected her to be so direct right from the start.
For the time being, he did not know what the current Control Devil was like. It was possible that she simply did not have a human sense of shyness. It was also possible that she was approaching him with a purpose, but he felt the latter possibility was quite small.
So he agreed. This just happened to align with his goal of cutting off contact between the Control Devil and the Japanese Cabinet.
"Then come to my place. My house is pretty big."
Kotone Asaba said.
"Okay."
The Control Devil responded. On her beautiful expressionless face, only the corners of her lips rose slightly. That smile looked faintly eerie.
However, her Affinity did not increase at all.
"By the way, what’s your name?"
Kotone Asaba asked again.
"A name... my name is Makima."
The Control Devil clearly paused for a moment. Most people would not notice such a meaningless detail, but Kotone Asaba was not most people. It seemed that even when the Control Devil came up with it on the spot, her name was still Makima.
Because of the meaning behind the name Makima, if the middle part was removed, it basically became "Mama." This represented Makima’s fondness for humans, as well as her instinctive desire to control.
"My name is Kotone Asaba. We can leave soon. My home is in Japan, so we’ll need to take a plane."
As he spoke, Kotone Asaba glanced at the Husky inside the pet shop.
"Actually, if you really want that Husky, I can buy it for you. You can pay me back after you have money."
"I want it."
Makima answered very simply, with almost no hesitation.
"Then come inside with me."
Kotone Asaba immediately brought Makima into the pet shop with him.
The pet shop employee looked at Kotone Asaba and felt that he seemed a little familiar. There were many customers every day, so she could not remember that many faces.
But when she noticed those distinctive blood-red eyes, she quickly recalled him. This boy had indeed come here not long ago. Those blood-red eyes were far too recognizable.
However, she remembered that the girl who had come with this boy last time was not this one. Though both of them were very beautiful.
That was the customer’s private business, so naturally, the employee could not ask about it. She threw those thoughts to the back of her mind and immediately said to Kotone Asaba and Makima, "Is there anything I can help you two with?"
"We want this Husky."
Kotone Asaba pointed at the Husky Makima had been staring at earlier and spoke to the clerk.
After paying, the Husky was theirs. He planned to take the Husky to a pet hospital first for a checkup and everything else it needed.
Although he was not sure whether this Husky had already been controlled by Makima, they still had to go through the necessary procedures. After all, if they were going to fly later, he would need to arrange pet transport for the Husky in advance, which required animal quarantine certification materials.
"We’ll need to stay in the Soviet Union for two days first. If we want to bring the Husky on a plane, we have to complete the procedures two days in advance."
Kotone Asaba said this to Makima.
Makima had only just arrived in the human world and did not understand these things he was talking about. She only nodded slowly, seeming to half understand.
In the Soviet Union, especially here in Moscow, Kotone Asaba still had his old Public Safety dorm.
Even now, he was still on vacation, so he could still live in that dorm. It also had not been occupied by anyone else.
After taking care of everything that had to be done for the Husky, Kotone Asaba handed the Husky completely over to Makima.
This Husky was very friendly with people, though it was impossible to tell whether that was because Makima had controlled it.
Makima stroked the Husky with a slight smile on her face.
[Makima Affinity +5%]
After the Control Devil gave herself a name, the name on the Affinity Codex also changed to Makima.
Buying Makima a Husky had raised her Affinity by the tiniest bit. It seemed Makima truly did like dogs, especially Huskies.
For someone like Makima, even raising her Affinity by such a tiny bit was already rare.
After that, Kotone Asaba brought Makima back to his home in Moscow.
Makima held the dog leash and walked behind Kotone Asaba, staring at his back.
From the moment they had first met, she had noticed that this human faintly carried the scent of the Chainsaw Devil...
And not only that, this human’s own scent was neither like a devil’s nor a human’s. He was most likely a devil-human.
In any case, she could be certain that this person must have come into contact with the Chainsaw Devil.
Otherwise, she would not have interacted with this human.
Kotone Asaba naturally knew that Makima’s nose was extremely sensitive, but what he did not expect was that her sense of smell was sharp enough to detect that he had been in contact with Pochita.
"Excuse me..."
At that moment, Makima suddenly asked, "Have you ever met a devil with a chainsaw growing out of its head?"
Hearing this, Kotone Asaba’s mouth opened slightly, but he fell into a brief silence.
He did not think Makima was so naive that she would say something like this to a random ordinary person.
Looking at it the other way around, it was possible that he had already been exposed.
But Pochita had clearly been inside the Kamui dimension the entire time and had never come out. How had Makima discovered him?
"I have. Why?"
Kotone Asaba gave an answer first, then continued thinking.
Either she had seen Pochita in a newspaper or some other kind of media, but that possibility was extremely low. First, because he had already used the Soviet military’s higher-ups to restrict the media on the Soviet side. Second, because Makima usually identified living beings with her nose rather than her eyes.
Other than that, the only possibility was... she had smelled something on him.
Kotone Asaba had already nearly guessed the truth.
Makima said, "Can you tell me where you met it?"
"In Japan."
Kotone Asaba answered truthfully.
"Japan. The country we’re going to in two days?"
Makima continued asking.
"That’s right. But why are you looking for a devil? Devils are terrifying creatures."
Kotone Asaba said.
"Do devil-humans also think devils are terrifying?"
Makima suddenly said something loaded with meaning.
The "devil-human" Makima spoke of was a Hybrid. The only difference was that devils considered them devil-humans, while humans called them Hybrids.
Since Makima was no longer pretending, Kotone Asaba also stopped pretending.
He immediately stopped, turned around, and looked at Makima.
"That’s true. The Control Devil wouldn’t be afraid of devils either."
"..."
The moment Kotone Asaba said that, Makima fell silent. She only smiled quietly.
"Just as you said, I’m a Hybrid. The devil inside my body knows you, so I know you too. But compared to the Control Devil, I’d rather call you Miss Makima."
Kotone Asaba bluffed with an entirely serious expression.
Makima truly believed what he said, because aside from that, there was no other reason to explain why he knew her.
"What do you want to do with the Chainsaw Devil? Maybe I can help you."
Kotone Asaba asked.
"Kill it."
Makima answered with an icy expression.
"That makes sense. After all, it has the ability to erase devils from existence."
Kotone Asaba looked calm on the surface, but inwardly, he was actually quite surprised.
Makima had actually said she wanted to kill the Chainsaw Devil. He had originally thought Makima had been a fanatical admirer of the Chainsaw Devil from the very beginning.
Although he could not completely rule out the possibility that Makima was lying, the Makima from the original timeline absolutely did not act like this when talking about the Chainsaw Devil. If it were the original Makima, she would definitely have excitedly told him that the Chainsaw Devil was a hero and how powerful he was.
Thinking about it carefully, it was not unreasonable. Back in Hell, Makima had joined the other three Horsemen to surround and kill the Chainsaw Devil.
That meant it was only after being led astray by the Japanese Cabinet, as well as after interacting more and more with humans and developing a morbid love for humanity, that her attitude toward the Chainsaw Devil changed drastically.
At the moment, Makima had come to the human world to hunt Pochita down.
This was not good news for Kotone Asaba. Now he was even more afraid to let Pochita out of the Kamui dimension.
