Chapter 107: Chapter 107: Pure Innocence
"Come on, let’s patrol. This here is our duty as Public Safety Devil Hunters!"
Junshin Teiichiro’s Japanese carried a rather strong regional accent. If Kotone Asaba’s language ability had not been maxed out, he might not have been able to understand him.
It was already time to officially start work, so Akane Sawatari and Junshin Teiichiro had to go on patrol.
Daily patrols were incredibly boring, so Kotone Asaba did not really want to keep accompanying Akane Sawatari and Junshin Teiichiro the whole time.
Just then, Reze showed perfect understanding, as if she could read his mind, and said to him, "Koto, go take care of whatever you need to do. I’ll watch them."
"Then I’ll leave them to you."
Although Kotone Asaba did not say much, he was still quite grateful inside.
Daily patrols basically would not encounter any devils that were too powerful. Even if they really did run into one, with Reze’s strength, she could handle most of them. If worst came to worst, she could call him, and he would be able to rush back immediately.
"Sawatari, Reze will accompany you from here. I have something to do, so I’ll be leaving first."
Before leaving, Kotone Asaba said this to Akane Sawatari.
"Mm-hmm!"
Akane Sawatari had already felt that there was no need to trouble him any further. The fact that he had brought her to Kyoto Public Safety was already more than enough.
[Akane Sawatari Affinity +5%]
For some reason, Akane Sawatari’s Affinity suddenly rose a little. Kotone Asaba then returned directly to the Kamui dimension.
After thinking for a moment, he decided not to return to Makima first. Instead, he planned to visit Aki Hayakawa.
After the Gun Devil incident he had created a few days ago, he did not know what kind of effect it had on Aki Hayakawa, so he wanted to check on him.
However, Aki Hayakawa was not at his own home at the moment, nor had he gone on daily patrol. He was at Himeno’s place.
Kotone Asaba arrived in front of Himeno’s door and pressed the doorbell.
However, nobody came to open the door for a long time, and there was no response either.
Aki Hayakawa and Himeno had probably gotten blackout drunk again last night and still had not woken up.
Kotone Asaba had no choice but to phase directly through the door and enter Himeno’s home.
As soon as he entered the living room, Kotone Asaba saw Aki Hayakawa and Himeno lying on the rug, sleeping soundly. On the table beside them was a pile of empty bottles and leftover snacks.
Sure enough, these two had gone on another drinking spree last night.
With nothing else to do, Kotone Asaba helped them clean up the empty bottles and leftovers on the table.
The sound of the doorbell had not woken Aki Hayakawa or Himeno, but cleaning up the table somehow woke Himeno instead.
"Huh...?"
Himeno slowly sat up, rubbing her eyes. Her clothes were a little disheveled.
Himeno was already wearing only a thin tank top, and with it slightly messy like that, Kotone Asaba found it hard to look her in the eye.
After Himeno finished rubbing her eyes and saw who was in front of her, she immediately asked, "Asaba? Why are you here?"
"I originally just came to check on you two. I didn’t expect you still wouldn’t be awake. I rang the doorbell just now, but there was no response, so I used my ability to come in."
As he spoke, Kotone Asaba had basically finished clearing the table, then wiped it down with a rag.
"Ahaha, Aki is really something, still not awake this late."
Himeno shamelessly dumped all the blame onto Aki Hayakawa.
"Speaking of which, you should already know about the previous Gun Devil incident, right? Did Aki Hayakawa suffer any impact from it?"
Kotone Asaba asked Himeno.
"Mm... At the time, I could tell Aki was pretty disappointed. Tokyo Public Safety also gave up on the plan to hunt down the Gun Devil. From now on, collecting Gun Devil flesh will only be for suppressing devils as a whole."
Himeno said, "Because of that, I specially applied for some time off. Over the last few days, Aki has gotten blackout drunk with me every day. If it were before, he never would’ve done something like this."
"I see... Then what is he thinking now?"
As expected, Aki Hayakawa had been affected quite heavily.
"He probably still has a sliver of hope left. After all, the Gun Devil does still exist, so Aki still has a sliver of hope for revenge."
Himeno looked at Aki Hayakawa’s sleeping face, her expression somewhat worried.
"But once enough time passes, Aki should give up. Even Tokyo Public Safety has suspended its plan to hunt down the Gun Devil. With Aki alone, success is basically impossible."
"All right, I understand."
Kotone Asaba sat down on the rug nearby.
Looking at it this way, there was no need to worry too much about Aki Hayakawa. He had done what he did because there had been no other choice. Otherwise, he would not have been able to solve the problem at its root.
This result was still better than Aki Hayakawa in the original work suddenly being told the truth by Makima.
However, the Aki Hayakawa in the original work did not react too violently because he had already experienced too much and lost too much.
The current Aki Hayakawa was still a somewhat inexperienced hothead, so his mindset was far worse.
Once enough time passed, and with Himeno guiding him, he would be able to let it go.
Speaking of which, Kotone Asaba suddenly noticed that Aki Hayakawa had already started growing a small ponytail.
This little ponytail was used as the price for his contract with the Fox Devil. The Fox Devil occasionally changed its tastes, and at those times, the ponytail could be used to offset the original contract price.
Coincidentally, Himeno also set her eyes on the little ponytail on the back of Aki Hayakawa’s head.
"I don’t know why Aki suddenly decided to grow this little ponytail. When I got drunk last night, I almost wanted to cut it off. If I really had cut it, Aki probably would’ve been very angry, right?"
"I think you should go put on some proper clothes first. The way you are right now is a little hard to look at."
Kotone Asaba said.
"Oh? I don’t mind, but you’re the one getting bothered by it, Asaba?"
Himeno deliberately teased him.
"No matter what, you should at least consider Aki Hayakawa’s feelings."
Kotone Asaba said calmly.
"Huh? What does this have to do with Aki?"
Whether Himeno truly did not understand or was pretending not to was impossible to tell.
"Don’t you like Aki Hayakawa? For his sake, you should pay more attention to this kind of thing..."
Kotone Asaba said it directly.
But halfway through, he suddenly felt like he had absolutely no right to say any of this to Himeno, considering he himself...
"Ahem..."
Kotone Asaba covered up his embarrassment.
"In short, I won’t say anything more than that."
Even after Kotone Asaba exposed her directly, Himeno showed no shyness on her face at all.
"That’s true. But it’s only me liking Aki one-sidedly."
"It’s fine. The two of you are a perfect match anyway. This is all just a matter of time."
Kotone Asaba said.
He could not be certain whether the current Aki Hayakawa liked Himeno, but he definitely had a good impression of her. Everything was only a matter of time.
In the original work, if not for being controlled by Makima, Aki Hayakawa would not have inexplicably fallen for Makima for no reason. There was a chance Himeno would have persuaded him to return to private work long ago.
[Himeno Affinity +5%]
"Is that so? Then when the time feels right, I’ll just ask Aki directly."
Himeno looked at Aki Hayakawa and murmured.
After Kotone Asaba’s reminder, Himeno also reflected on herself a little.
"I’ll go put on some clothes now. In the future, when I get drunk, I’ll try to restrain myself and only mess with Aki."
As she spoke, Himeno went to her room and put on proper clothes.
Kotone Asaba smiled a little awkwardly, too embarrassed to say anything more. Only after saying all of that had he realized he had no right to lecture Himeno.
At the same time, several small birds were perched on the power lines outside the window.
Kotone Asaba paid no attention to those small birds, but he knew that as long as he was within Tokyo, Makima was very likely listening in on him.
And the truth was exactly as he thought. At home, Makima was reading a book while listening in on the conversation between Kotone Asaba and Himeno.
In Kyoto.
Akane Sawatari and Junshin Teiichiro were patrolling the streets of Kyoto, while Reze followed behind them.
Junshin Teiichiro walked down the street with a carefree air, a vape always hanging from his mouth. He had several more in his pocket as spare weapons.
However, he was not actually vaping, because smoking in public places was not allowed. Even with a vape, it was not appropriate, and the smoke could easily cause misunderstandings or disturb others.
He was only holding it in his mouth out of habit.
"I heard something!"
Just then, Junshin Teiichiro suddenly spoke.
"That there’s the sound of sparrows. A devil showed up over there!"
He pointed in a certain direction and immediately ran that way.
Akane Sawatari also followed with a cautious expression.
Reze, however, was not worried at all, because she knew it was only an average-strength devil. Even Akane Sawatari alone could handle it.
Junshin Teiichiro arrived first. It was in a patch of grass in a park.
A little boy and a devil that looked like a giant insect were playing there. Junshin Teiichiro was about to attack, but when he saw that the giant insect did not look frightening and even seemed a little cute, and that it did not seem to be hurting anyone, he hesitated.
Akane Sawatari soon arrived as well and hurriedly asked, "What happened?"
"Nothin’ much... It’s just that thing there. Looks like it might not be a real bad devil."
Junshin Teiichiro pointed at the giant insect as he spoke.
Akane Sawatari saw that the devil was playing with the little boy quite amicably, and the little boy also looked very happy, so her wariness gradually decreased.
At that moment, the little boy noticed the two people who had suddenly appeared behind him. In a panic, he immediately spread his arms out and shielded the giant insect.
"P-please don’t hurt it! This devil is very nice to me..."
"Don’t be scared. We won’t hurt it."
Akane Sawatari wanted to walk over and soothe the little boy.
"Hold on."
But Reze suddenly stopped her.
Akane Sawatari immediately halted and looked at Reze in confusion.
"Watch carefully."
As she spoke, Reze walked straight toward the little boy.
The little boy looked panicked and nervous, which made Akane Sawatari feel somewhat sorry for him.
When Reze was less than 1 meter / 3.3 feet away from the little boy, her figure suddenly flashed. She moved behind the little boy at a speed invisible to the naked eye and used a dagger to cut the connection point between the giant insect and the boy’s back.
The instant that connection was cut, the little boy fainted on the spot.
"This is the Muscle Devil. It can control muscles. Just now, that little boy was being controlled by it. You two almost fell for its trick."
Reze spoke calmly to Akane Sawatari and Junshin Teiichiro.
As an agent, she was familiar with basically every devil recorded by the Soviet Union. With a single glance, she had recognized it as the Muscle Devil and remembered its traits.
Reze’s speed just now had been so fast that the Muscle Devil only now realized it had been seen through.
"Damn it! You hateful humans! You saw through me?!"
It had originally planned to ambush the humans before it, but it had not expected to run into such a skilled Devil Hunter.
The Muscle Devil decided to go all out. Its true form was immediately revealed, its body growing much larger while becoming far uglier, and it lunged at Reze.
Akane Sawatari and Junshin Teiichiro both froze for a moment. Lacking much experience, neither of them had ever encountered a situation like this.
With a cold expression, Reze twirled the dagger in her hand. Facing the Muscle Devil’s attack, she remained completely calm.
Reze’s movements were so fast they were basically impossible to see clearly. Only a few afterimages could be seen, and in the blink of an eye, she had already passed beside the Muscle Devil.
Several flashes of cold light flickered and vanished in an instant. Suddenly, multiple cracks appeared across the Muscle Devil’s body, and it was dismembered into large chunks.
"Huh...?"
The Muscle Devil did not even seem to realize that it had been cut into pieces. It was still wondering why its field of vision kept dropping, until it could only look up at the three humans from the ground.
Perhaps even at the moment of death, the Muscle Devil did not know it had already died.
Before Akane Sawatari and Junshin Teiichiro could even come back to their senses, the Muscle Devil had already been dealt with by Reze.
"S-so amazing! As expected of a Tokyo Public Safety Devil Hunter!"
Junshin Teiichiro exclaimed.
"That devil was actually that sneaky. I almost fell for it."
Junshin Teiichiro walked over and stomped on the Muscle Devil’s corpse.
"Take this as a lesson. Don’t easily trust humans who are with devils, unless they’re familiar acquaintances you know. Also, don’t casually judge a devil by its appearance."
Immediately afterward, Reze deliberately said to Akane Sawatari, "If you have time, I also suggest reading more files on different devils. Kyoto Public Safety should have plenty of information like that. Take advantage of these seven days and read as much as you can. The more you understand your enemies, the better."
"Mm-hmm. I’ll remember that!"
Akane Sawatari nodded seriously.
She still felt a lingering fear. If Reze had not acted just now, she definitely would have fallen for it. The consequences would have been unimaginable.
"Call the police immediately. This little boy should be handed over to the police. As for the Muscle Devil’s corpse, have Kyoto Public Safety send someone to clean it up."
Since Akane Sawatari and Junshin Teiichiro were both rookies and still far from proficient, Reze had to remind them even of these fairly basic things. Otherwise, they would have taken a while before remembering what they should do.
Akane Sawatari immediately called the police, while Junshin Teiichiro notified Kyoto Public Safety.
While they waited for people to arrive and handle the scene, Akane Sawatari lowered her head and looked at the Muscle Devil’s corpse, reflecting on herself.
She had originally thought she was already capable of standing on her own, but in the end, she had still overestimated herself.
She could strongly feel the huge gap between herself and Kotone Asaba and Reze. She had to humbly ask them for guidance.
She also did not yet have enough strength to protect her sister. Sure enough, she still had to join Public Safety and work hard to improve herself.
During this short seven-day experience, Akane Sawatari wanted to perform as well as possible. That way, she would have a much greater chance of staying at Kyoto Public Safety.
