Chapter 71: Chapter 71: The Black Bear Devil

"All right. Everyone, go back and get some rest. We gather and move out first thing tomorrow morning."

After Captain Volkov finished explaining the operation plan, he dismissed everyone.

Almost everyone looked grim. After all, tomorrow they would be facing devils that possessed pieces of the Gun Devil’s flesh. Every operation like this resulted in some level of casualties.

Even the members of Team 2, who were in charge of dealing with the Corn Devil, did not dare let their guard down. Any devil that ate a piece of the Gun Devil’s flesh would become stronger. If the amount of Gun Devil flesh was large enough, even the weakest devil could become absurdly powerful.

Only Kotone Asaba and Reze looked completely relaxed.

Reze did not take tomorrow’s operation seriously at all. Instead, she was discussing what they should have for dinner tonight with Kotone.

When Kotone was about to leave, he happened to pass by Funi and Nick.

"Nick, didn’t you just make a contract with a new devil today? How did it go?"

"I made a contract with the Wolf Devil. It’s the one Asaba subdued last time. It seems pretty strong, just a little cowardly."

"That’s great. You really are impressive, Nick. I’m still not qualified to contract with a new devil."

"It’s not all good. Contracting with a new devil means paying a price too. You’ve always protected me before, so tomorrow, let me protect you."

Kotone heard the conversation between the two siblings.

Hearing the topic, Kotone casually said, "You contracted with another devil today too?"

"Yeah. Today was the day the organization arranged contracts all at once. Every Devil Hunter who qualified contracted with a new devil today."

Nick noticed the word "too" in Kotone’s sentence. "But from the sound of it, you contracted with a new devil too? I don’t think I saw you in the devil containment cells, though."

"I was allowed to contract with a new devil, but I didn’t go."

Kotone answered.

"Huh? Why not?"

Nick asked in confusion.

He was not particularly surprised that Kotone was allowed to contract with a new devil through Moscow Public Safety.

Asaba had only just arrived, yet his achievements were already brighter than Nick’s after a year of Public Safety experience.

He and his sister Funi had both joined Public Safety a year ago, then trained there for half a year before officially starting field work.

"For me, the abilities I already have are enough for now. Contracting with more devils would just become a burden instead."

Kotone explained.

"That’s true. I’m even considering whether I should terminate my previous devil contract. Its attack style feels kind of redundant now that I’ve contracted with the Wolf Devil."

After hearing what Kotone said, Nick suddenly felt that the devil power he had originally contracted for was a little unnecessary.

"There’s no need to terminate it. Just don’t use that devil’s power. If you go looking for it now to break the contract, it probably won’t bother listening to you anyway."

Funi, who was standing beside him, spoke up.

The devil Nick had contracted with before was the same one she had. The contract cost was relatively light, and there would be no issue as long as he did not use it.

If contract costs were not considered, one person could contract with multiple devils at the same time.

Kishibe, for example, had contracted with more than one devil. At this point, Kishibe was already old, and there was very little left on his body that could still be used as contract payment. Even so, he still maintained contracts with the Needle Devil, the Claw Devil, and the Knife Devil.

If it had been Kishibe in his youth, he would definitely have had more devil contracts, and stronger ones too.

"Then I’ll just leave it alone. Tomorrow will be the perfect chance to test how strong the Wolf Devil’s ability is."

Team 1 would be responsible for hunting the Bear Devil tomorrow. Nick did not seem particularly afraid of the Bear Devil. He looked full of fighting spirit.

"No matter what, you still need to be careful."

Funi was a little worried about tomorrow’s operation.

She and her brother Nick were both fighting a devil that possessed Gun Devil flesh for the first time. They did not have a clear idea of how strong that kind of devil would be.

"What’s there to be afraid of? Asaba’s got our backs. I’m pretty sure Asaba could take care of that Bear Devil all by himself."

Nick said dismissively.

Only a reckless newbie like him, who had no real concept of what Gun Devil flesh meant, could say something like that. Devil Hunters with more experience would never dare underestimate the Bear Devil.

"Hey, hey. The operation hasn’t even started yet, and you’re already bragging? Newbies like you are exactly the ones most likely to get killed when facing a devil that possesses Gun Devil flesh."

At that moment, a thin man nearby spoke.

The man was skinny and slightly hunched. He had a lot of white hair, and his whole body gave off a strong sense of exhaustion and decay.

His tone carried no real emotion, but it still sounded unpleasant to Nick.

Kotone knew this man. He was also a member of Team 1, but his personality was rather withdrawn. Aside from his partner, he almost never interacted with the other team members, and even with his partner, he did not talk much.

His name seemed to be Berkolin. He was actually only in his twenties, but he already looked somewhat aged. Kotone had heard that it was caused by the price of the devil contract he had made.

"What’s that supposed to mean?"

Nick immediately became unhappy, and his tone grew sharp.

"Stop it, Nick. He’s our senior. Show him some respect..."

Funi hurriedly tried to persuade him in a low voice.

"Heh... You’ve got quite a temper. I hope the Bear Devil doesn’t eat you tomorrow, kid."

After saying that, Berkolin walked away, as if he could not be bothered to say anything more to Nick.

"You!"

Nick was extremely annoyed, but there was nothing he could do.

The man had already left. He could not chase after him just to curse him out. If Captain Volkov heard that, he would definitely get scolded.

As for fighting, that was even more out of the question. Public Safety strictly forbade Devil Hunters from killing each other. Unless two people secretly arranged a private fight somewhere no one could see them, but even then, there was no guarantee the other party would not report it to the captain afterward.

"All right, all right. Berkolin may be harsh, but he was still trying to look out for you. Tomorrow’s operation really isn’t something you can take lightly."

Funi comforted Nick.

"You call that looking out for me? He was basically cursing me to die."

Nick said unhappily.

Still, he was not that petty. He calmed down quickly and was not so childish that he would hold a grudge against Berkolin during tomorrow’s special operation.

Kotone did not say a word throughout the whole exchange.

There really was nothing to say. What Berkolin said was not wrong.

Any normal person would think Nick was a reckless newbie with no concept of what Gun Devil flesh meant, and that was exactly the truth.

Although Kotone could most likely kill the Bear Devil on his own, that did not conflict with the fact that Nick was being reckless.

Any Devil Hunter capable of solo-killing a devil that possessed Gun Devil flesh was undoubtedly elite even among elites. Otherwise, they would not have deployed two whole teams just to handle two devils.

At present, the people of Moscow Public Safety did not have a deep understanding of Kotone’s strength. Aside from Nick, basically no one thought he could kill the Bear Devil alone.

After chatting with Funi and Nick for a little while longer, Kotone returned home with Reze.

"My identity as a Hybrid isn’t suitable to expose, so tomorrow’s operation will have to rely on you, Koto."

On the way home, Reze spoke.

She was not worried about tomorrow’s operation. Even if she did not act, Kotone’s strength would be enough to resolve it easily.

As for her identity as a Hybrid, it was inconvenient to expose it. Although the military no longer had much control over her, the commotion she caused when fighting as a Hybrid was too great. At that point, the ones who would come after her would no longer be the military.

"Yeah. If you can avoid transforming, then try not to transform."

Kotone said as well.

The next morning.

Kotone and Reze arrived at the Public Safety building on time to gather.

Captain Volkov and Team 2’s Captain Somal counted the members. Once they confirmed that all members of Team 1 and Team 2 were present, they split into two groups and set out at the same time, heading for the locations where the devils would be hunted.

By pure coincidence, Funi and Nick ended up in the same vehicle as Berkolin. However, Berkolin had no expression on his face and said nothing to Nick, as if yesterday had never happened.

Nick also suppressed the displeasure in his heart and treated yesterday’s matter as if it had never happened.

Team 2 had already arrived in the forest area where the Corn Devil had been seen, while Team 1 was still heading deeper into the forest. The two teams had communication devices and could exchange information with each other at any time.

"Team 2, have you found the Corn Devil?"

"Not yet, but we’ve already found tracks left by the Corn Devil. We should see it soon."

"Be careful, then. We’re almost at the depths of the forest too."

"Understood. You too."

Captain Volkov was communicating with Team 2’s Captain Somal, while Kotone and Reze were sitting in the same vehicle as Captain Volkov.

The person driving was someone else, another member of Team 1.

Kotone observed the surroundings at all times. With his insight, he could detect the Bear Devil immediately.

After a while, some traces could already be seen, huge bear pawprints on the ground, along with trees that looked as if they had been snapped apart by monstrous force. They were clearly traces left behind by the Bear Devil.

Kotone was the first to notice these signs and immediately reminded Captain Volkov, "We’ve entered the Bear Devil’s active range. There are traces left by the Bear Devil up ahead."

Volkov nodded and immediately used the communication device to warn every member of Team 1.

Team 1’s vehicles instantly slowed down, and everyone stayed alert to their surroundings in case the Bear Devil launched a sudden attack.

On the other side, Team 2’s Captain Somal could also hear Volkov’s voice and learned that Team 1 was about to encounter their target as well.

Right at that moment, Somal saw a devil’s figure appear not far away. It was a giant crimson ear of corn. Every kernel on its body was an eyeball, some sunken inward, some bulging outward. Dense clusters of skeletal human hands grew from the bottom, allowing it to move.

"Corn Devil spotted. All members of Team 2, prepare to begin the operation immediately!"

Somal said in a deep voice, reacting as quickly as possible.

Volkov could also hear Somal’s voice through the communication device and muttered to himself, "Looks like Team 2 has already encountered the Corn Devil. I hope their operation goes smoothly."

Kotone had originally planned to teleport over to Team 2 first and help them, but just then, he saw the Bear Devil.

To be precise, it was a Black Bear Devil. Its general appearance was similar to a black bear’s, but its body was much larger. Its paws alone were large enough to cover an entire person, and its muscles were extremely powerful.

Its rough skin was ugly and full of pits, but it looked thick and hard as stone. It did not seem to have any ranged attack methods. It was simply a berserker with high offense and high defense.

"We’ve encountered the Bear Devil too."

At that moment, Kotone said to Captain Volkov.

Kotone’s eyesight surprised Volkov. Volkov himself had not seen the Bear Devil at all yet, mainly because the dense forest ahead seriously obstructed his vision.

It had been the same earlier. Kotone had found the traces left by the Bear Devil long before they did.

Was this also one of Kotone’s abilities? No wonder his eyes looked so unusual.

"The Bear Devil is up ahead. Everyone, prepare yourselves."

Volkov immediately warned every member of Team 1.

However, Kotone did not wait for them to see what the Black Bear Devil looked like. He had already made the first move.

Anywhere within his line of sight, he could teleport freely without needing a "coordinate," and it was an even faster instant movement that did not require entering the Kamui dimension as a "transfer station."

A spatial vortex suddenly appeared behind the Black Bear Devil. At the same time Kotone sucked himself into his right eye, he seamlessly walked out from the spatial vortex near the Black Bear Devil.

The Black Bear Devil did not notice Kotone suddenly appearing behind it at all. Kotone raised the chainsaw in his hand and sawed toward the Black Bear Devil’s massive, mountain-like body.

Because the Black Bear Devil’s body was too hard, he was unable to saw it in half instantly like cutting through tofu as he usually did.

When he had sawed halfway through, the Black Bear Devil, feeling the pain, reacted extremely quickly. The severe injury and agony instead made it instantly go berserk, and it turned around to slap Kotone with one paw.

Seeing a bear paw as large as his entire body come smashing toward him, Kotone had no choice but to make himself and Pochita phase. If that hit him, he would absolutely be turned into meat paste.

The bear paw passed through Kotone’s body and struck the tree behind him. The thick old tree was instantly snapped apart with a thunderous bang.

The Black Bear Devil’s body had already been sawed halfway open, and the force of that slap worsened its injury, but it did not seem affected. Instead, it grew even more violent.

"Roar!"

The Black Bear Devil let out a deep, heavy roar. Its two huge bear paws struck toward Kotone as fast as falling rain, but they could not hit him at all.

Its mindless, frenzied exertion made its injuries worsen more and more. Blood splattered everywhere with each movement, and soon, it became extremely weak from excessive blood loss. Even if it wanted to keep raging, it no longer had the strength.

Once the Black Bear Devil had weakened itself into a helpless state, Kotone solidified and finished it off without any effort.

The members of Team 1 had only just seen what the Black Bear Devil looked like, and Kotone had already dealt with it.

He did not stay there any longer and immediately transferred to Team 2’s side to help them.

The members of Team 1 immediately went to handle the Black Bear Devil’s corpse. However, what they did not notice was that in the dense forest behind them, a bear-shaped shadow even larger than the Black Bear Devil had appeared.
