Chapter 262: Chapter 262 The Check-Up

Emilia’s POV

Mila’s words settled somewhere deep in my chest, tugging at a place I usually kept locked. The truth was, I’d wanted to carry Sebastian’s pup for a long time now. I just hadn’t let myself say it out loud.

"So?" Mila watched me closely. "Shall we go now?"

Mila knew my resolve was cracking. So she struck while the iron was hot, pressing me to get checked at the pack clinic.

I hesitated a moment longer, then sighed.

"Fine. Let’s go get it over with."

We drove out to the Silver Moon Pack’s medical center.

There was no waiting room shuffle.

The moment we stepped through the doors, the staff practically fell over themselves. I was the Luna, after all, and Mila was the former Luna beside me.

The pack doctor was called in immediately, and we were shown straight back.

I must have looked as tense as I felt, because Mila reached over and squeezed my hand. "Relax, sweetheart. It’s a simple check-up. Try thinking about the little one you’ll be holding soon. That should take the edge off."

"Right," I muttered.

After a round of tests, I sat across from the pack doctor, gripping the edge of my chair. "So? Everything okay?"

He chose his words carefully."We won’t have a complete picture until the final results come back, Luna. But so far, everything looks perfectly healthy. The only thing I’d note is that your body seems a touch run-down. I’ll prescribe some strengthening tonics. Just take them regularly, and you’ll be right as rain."

"Okay." I exhaled, some of the knot in my stomach loosening. "How many tests are we still waiting on?"

"Two."

"And when will those be back?"

"Give it three days, Luna."

I took the prescription and walked out. Mila had been hovering by the door, and the second she saw me she pounced. "Well? What did he say?"

"Still waiting on a couple of results, but nothing’s wrong so far. He said I’m a little run-down, so he prescribed some tonics."

Her whole face lit up. "See? I told you there’d be nothing to worry about. Now, the tonics, do you know how to prepare them properly? Never mind, I’ll send one of the pack omegas over to help you."

"Honestly, Mila, there’s no need. I’ve been brewing herbal remedies for my mother since I was twelve. I could do it in my sleep."

We chatted our way out of the clinic. I said my goodbyes and drove back to the beach house.

The moment I got home, exhaustion caught up with me. I crashed and slept clean through the afternoon, waking only as the sun dipped low. Once I’d shaken off the grogginess, I ran to the market for groceries.

Sebastian had been running himself ragged with that Alpha Summit, and I figured a home-cooked meal was the least I could do.

He got back just as the kitchen filled with the smell of dinner. I heard nothing, no footsteps, no door, and then suddenly a pair of arms wrapped around my waist from behind, making me jump half out of my skin.

I laughed, swatting at him. "You move like a ghost, you know that? Not a single sound. It’s unnatural."

"I wanted to surprise you," he murmured, burying his face in my hair and breathing me in.

"I’m the one who’s supposed to be surprising you."

"Oh, believe me, I’m surprised. My mate, cooking? Tonight must be my lucky night."

"If you want to actually eat it, go wait in the living room. I’ll call you when it’s ready."

"How long?"

"About an hour."

"An hour?" He groaned dramatically against my neck. "I’m starving. I didn’t even get to finish last night."

"And where exactly was dinner served last night?"

"The balcony," he said, entirely too pleased with himself.

I froze mid-stir, my face going hot. By the time my brain caught up, I’d already lifted my foot and kicked him square in the shin. "You are unbearable. Out. Now."

"Ow, okay, okay! Don’t kick me, that’s your Alpha you’re abusing."

I brandished the spatula. "Keep talking and I’ll knock your teeth out with this."

"Gorgeous even when you’re furious," he said, grinning like a fool. "You know you don’t have to slave away in here. You already look good enough to eat. Why don’t you just serve yourself up instead?"

I whipped around, frying pan in hand, but he was already halfway to the living room, laughing.

A few minutes later he was back, holding up a plastic bag with a frown. "Emilia. What’s this?"

I glanced over without stopping. "Tonics. "

His playful mood evaporated. He crossed the kitchen, suddenly serious. "Are you sick? What’s wrong?"

"I’m fine," I said, rolling my eyes. "I just want to get pregnant sooner rather than later, so I went in for a check-up. The doctor said I’m a little run-down, that’s all. These are supposed to build me back up."

His whole face darkened. "What kind of quack said that? Absolute nonsense. My mate is the healthiest woman alive. Run-down, my ass. He’s the one who sounds run-down."

"Hmph." I fought back a smile. "Whatever the doctor says goes. He didn’t earn that title for nothing."

"These clinics have no shame. They’ll invent an ailment out of thin air just to line their pockets. Don’t let them fool you. And don’t you dare take these, Ryder doesn’t trust anything that comes in a bottle, and neither do I. What if they mess with your system?"

"You’re overthinking it," I said, patting his chest. "No pack doctor is going to poison the Luna, Sebastian. Besides, Mila’s taken these exact tonics before, so—"

Sebastian’s face darkened again. "What have you been doing behind my back?"
