Chapter 123: Chapter 123

Dominic’s POV

I ended the call. His gaze stayed on the black screen for a couple seconds before he finally lowered the phone.

Lena came out of the bathroom wrapped in a robe, her hair still dripping, and made a beeline for the bedroom.

She moved fast, bare feet smacking lightly against the floor, clearly trying to slip past him before he could react.

Bang. The door shut in his face. He walked over and knocked once, then again. No answer.

“I’m heading out for a bit,” he said.

Her voice came through the door, sharp and immediate. “Great. Don’t come back, because I’m locking it.”

He just stood there, silent, waiting.

A few minutes later, the handle turned. She cracked the door open and leaned out to check the hallway. The second she saw he was still there, she tried to slam it shut.

Too late. His leg was already wedged in the gap.

“Dominic, are you twelve?” She shoved the door hard against his shin. It didn’t budge.

“Do you want to come out?” He wasn’t teasing. He meant it.

“No.”

He glanced at the time. “You sure you can sleep alone?”

“I’ve been sleeping alone for over twenty years. Why wouldn’t I be able to?” She pushed the door again, then stopped. If he really wanted in, she couldn’t stop him. She knew that.

“That was before.” His eyes settled on her face.

She had just come out of a hot shower. Her skin was flushed from the steam, that soft heat-bright color spreading from her cheeks down her neck and disappearing beneath the loose collar of her robe.

The fabric had fallen open a little, exposing the clean line of her collarbone. Her full breasts were barely held in place by the belt tied at her waist.

His wolf stirred hard, instantly restless. He could smell her—warm, rich, unmistakably hers—and it messed with his head in the worst way.

He’d seen her body. He knew exactly what was under that robe. The weight of her breasts pressed into his palms, the curve of her waist, the spread of her hips, the way her thighs had locked tight around him.

No she-wolf had ever gotten under his skin like this. Lena had used one single night to wreck everything Dominic had kept locked down for years.

His cock hardened, and he had to force his mind somewhere else before it got even worse.

She felt his stare. Her whole body went tight, and a flush spread across her cheeks. "Weren’t you leaving? Then go."

"Changed my mind."

One hand clamped hard around the doorknob. She didn’t care about his leg anymore. Right now, she only wanted him out of this doorway, out of her space, as far away as possible.

She shoved him, and he pushed right back.

Through gritted teeth, she snapped, "Get out."

He didn’t move. His gaze slid from her face downward, landing on the slit in her robe, on the shape of her nipples pressing through the damp fabric, then lower, to the bare skin of her thigh where the robe had ridden up.

He didn’t even try to hide it. He wanted her to see exactly what she’d done to him.

Her face turned even redder, and her breathing got uneven. He caught the faint shift in her scent, something warmer, deeper. Her mouth was still saying no, but her body had already given her away. She was wet.

They stayed locked like that until he finally eased the pressure.

Before she could slam the door, he flattened his palm against it. "Don’t lock it."

She said nothing. She shoved the door shut with all her strength and locked it anyway.

He rested his forehead against the door and listened. He waited until her footsteps faded farther inside, then he left.

The drive took twenty minutes. He pushed the gas the whole way, windows down, cold air slicing across his face.

He stopped in front of the flower shop. Eliza was behind the counter wrapping a bouquet. She looked up, saw him in the doorway, and her whole face lit up at once.

It had been a long time since he’d come to see her.

"Dominic." Her eyes sparkled, her voice soft and sweet. "What brings you here?"

He barely looked at the warmth on her face. His gaze flicked to the flowers on her workbench. "I heard you’ve got a new boyfriend."

She blinked, then shook her head. "No."

"None of that matters." His voice was flat, almost cold. "I came to remind you to stay in your lane. Marcus is getting out soon."

The color drained from Eliza’s face in a second. Fear rushed into her eyes, and the joy that had lit up her expression the moment she saw him was gone, wiped clean like it had never been there.

Dominic offered her no comfort, not even a shred of softness. His warning meant exactly what it sounded like.

He turned to leave.

She stumbled after him, her voice breaking as she called out, "Dominic! Why? Why are you doing this to me? Did you never feel anything for me? Not even once?"

He stopped and looked back.

Tears trembled in her eyes, hanging there, barely held in. Even now, she was still waiting for an answer she already knew she would never get.

"No." He looked at her like she was nothing more than a wall. "Don’t waste the little bit of goodwill I still have left for you. There’s barely any left as it is."

Her tears spilled over at once. She stood frozen in front of the shop, watching his car pull away. He didn’t slow down.

He drove back to Lena Foster’s apartment building. After stepping out of the elevator, he keyed in the entry code.

The door was locked. Bolted from the inside.

The corner of his mouth twitched.

He called her. No answer. He called again. Same result.

He sent her a text. "Open the door."

No reply.

He sent another. "How long do you think you can keep shutting me out?"

Lena’s POV

She stared at her phone and didn’t answer.

If she could avoid him for just one night, then that counted as a win.

She turned off her phone. Let him text. Let him call.

Morning crept in.

Sunlight slipped through the gap in the curtains and landed across the room. Lena woke, pushed herself up, and then remembered she had absolutely nothing to do.

So she flopped back down, half-dozed for a bit, then reached for her phone and turned it on.

8:20.

His texts loaded one after another.

"Are you really not opening the door?"

"Do you seriously think you can fall asleep?"

"Good night."

And that was it. Nothing after that.

Her chest tightened hard. She stared at that last message for a long, long second.

She had locked him out. He had to have gone home. Of course he had gone home.

She got up, brushed her teeth, then went into the kitchen. She fried a few eggs and sat down to eat.

They tasted fine, honestly. But still not as good as Dominic’s. Same pan, same eggs, yet somehow whatever he made tasted twice as good. It annoyed her every single time, like, unfairly so.

Her phone buzzed.

A new text.

"Open the door."

Her hand jerked so sharply the fork nearly slipped. Her eyes snapped toward the front door. She set the fork down, walked over, and looked through the peephole.

No one.

She cracked the door open and leaned her head out.

He was standing against the wall beside the door, just outside the peephole’s angle. When she appeared, he turned and looked straight at her.

Her heart slammed against her ribs.

Dark stubble covered his jaw, shadowing the line from chin to cheekbone. His hair was pushed back carelessly, no styling, no effort, just enough to show his face. His shirt collar was wrinkled. His eyes drooped a little, tired and heavy.

This was the Alpha of the Bloodmoon Pack. Just his name alone was enough to make other leaders lower their heads. He ruled the strongest pack in this territory, the kind of man who could walk into a room and make the whole place go dead silent.

And yet he had spent the night outside her apartment, on the hallway floor, behind a locked door.

"What a heartless woman," he said, voice rough and hoarse as he straightened and stepped in front of her. "Can I come in now?"
