Chapter 147: Chapter 147

Dominic’s POV

After I dropped Lena off at home, I drove straight to the office.

Daniel came in right behind me and followed me through the lobby. “Morgan Hale is here to see you. Ever since that mess, the whole industry has basically blacklisted her. Nobody wants to work with her.”

I said nothing. The elevator doors slid shut.

“Should we tell Luna about this? They used to work together,” Daniel asked carefully.

“No.”

He got the message and didn’t bring it up again.

The elevator doors opened. Dominic walked straight for the conference room. Morgan was already sitting at the table, still carrying that same hard-edged attitude, like she was ready to square up against a room full of men and refuse to give an inch.

“Alpha Dominic.” She rose to her feet.

He took the seat across from her. His eyes swept over her face, cold and direct. “What do you want?”

“Sorry for showing up unannounced.” She chose her words with obvious care.

“Get to the point.”

She sat back down. Her gaze dropped to the ring on his left hand, then lifted again. “I’m here to propose a partnership. My company needs funding, and Bloodmoon Pack’s resources could help me get a real foothold in this region.”

“That’s for my business team to decide.” He held her stare without blinking. “Whatever you actually came here to say, it’s not about work.”

“I just need a chance to stay alive in this industry,” she said, still pushing. “That’s all I’m asking for. One chance.”

A chance?

If Bloodmoon Pack backed her company, every door in this region would swing open for her.

He let out a short laugh, sharp and mocking, and the color drained from her face on the spot.

“You’re running some no-name startup, and after one conversation I’m supposed to hand you something?” He stood, his voice flat and merciless. “You have zero leverage here.”

Morgan’s hands clenched tight on her knees. “Lena and I used to be colleagues.”

His expression turned instantly colder, like the room temperature had dropped. “So what, every former coworker my mate ever had can just walk in, say her name, and expect me to start writing checks?”

Her face went bright red. Shame, frustration, and that raw, cornered kind of despair all crashed together on it.

I turned to leave, and then I heard her voice behind me.

"What about Gemma Ashford?"

I stopped cold.

Gemma Ashford. Eliza Ashford’s sister.

I was still facing away from her, but my whole body locked up, from my shoulders all the way down to my heels.

Behind me, Morgan let out a quiet sigh.

"Who are you?" I turned back around, my gaze dark and unreadable.

Morgan pulled out a tablet from her bag, tapped the screen a couple of times, then held it out to me.

I took it. A slideshow started playing on its own. Two young women, arms around each other, laughing like they didn’t have a care in the world.

One of them was Morgan, much younger than she was now, with brighter eyes. The other girl had a smile so vivid it almost hurt to look at. She had Eliza’s cheekbones and jawline, but everything else about her was completely different. Eliza had always been careful, polished, hard to read. This girl wasn’t like that at all. She was open, radiant, fearless.

My hand shook.

One photo after another. That face. That smile. In a park. In a café. On a rooftop at sunset. Every frame was full of laughter. Every frame felt alive.

My throat tightened. I gripped the tablet so hard my knuckles turned white.

Every image burned itself into my mind, and every single one ripped at the part of my chest I’d spent years trying to bury.

"...How did you know her?" My voice came out rough, catching halfway through.

Morgan’s eyes turned glassy. "We met online. Before she disappeared, we stayed at the same cabin for a week. She told me everything. About you, about your family, about all of it."

I set the tablet down. I needed air. I needed out of this room.

"Daniel," I called softly.

Daniel stepped forward. The second he felt the shift in the room, he froze.

"Take care of her situation. Whatever she needs." I handed the tablet back to Morgan and turned toward my office.

Daniel clearly had no clue what had just happened. He glanced at Morgan, confused.

Morgan put the tablet away, blinked hard, wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes, and followed Daniel out of the meeting room.

I locked the door from the inside.

Lena’s POV

I was at the grocery store picking out ingredients when I called Dominic to ask what he wanted for dinner.

No answer. I figured he was probably stuck in a meeting.

So I sent him a text, telling him I was in a really good mood and I’d cook whatever he wanted.

Still nothing.

That was weird. No matter how slammed he was, he always made time to pick up my call.

I called Daniel.

He answered right away. "Luna."

"Is Dominic busy? I called him, but he didn’t answer."

"He’s very busy right now. It’s not a good time for a call."

I trusted Daniel. If he said Dominic was busy, then yeah, he was definitely busy.

I hung up and kept shopping on my own.

After I got home, I spent the next couple of hours cooking. When I finally looked up, it was already seven. The sky outside the kitchen window had gone dark.

Everything was ready except the last dish. I’d been waiting the whole time for him to walk through the door.

He didn’t come. No call. No text.

I tried one more time. The call went through, but no one answered.

I frowned. What on earth was he doing?

Ten more minutes passed. I called again. This time, I told myself, if he still didn’t pick up, I was going to the office.

Still nothing.

I sent Daniel a text: "Is he still at the office?"

"Yes."

I changed clothes, went downstairs, and grabbed a cab.

The whole ride over, my stomach felt off. Not pain exactly. Just... wrong. Like something was sitting there, heavy and cold, and I couldn’t shake it.

The building was dark, lit only by the glow from outside. The front doors were locked. The security guard stood up the second he saw me, but before he could say anything, Daniel appeared through the side entrance.

The guard stepped back at once.

"You’re still here?" I looked at Daniel.

"I was waiting for you, Luna."

He led me in through the side door and into the elevator. The whole building felt hollow, dead quiet, like all the noise and life from the daytime had been stripped clean out of it.

"Did something happen?" I finally asked. I couldn’t hold it in anymore.

Daniel shook his head. "Alpha met with someone this afternoon. After that, he shut himself in his office. When it was time for me to leave, he called and told me to go home. Said I wasn’t to check on him again."

"Who did he meet with?"

"Morgan Hale."

Morgan.

Everything she had said flashed through my mind in an instant. Every hint she’d dropped. Every vague little comment about knowing Dominic through someone else.

"What does she want?"

"She wants Alpha to back her company."

I took a slow, deep breath.

Whatever Morgan had brought into that meeting, it wasn’t just some business pitch. She had something Dominic couldn’t brush off, and whatever it was, it had clearly gotten under his skin.

The elevator doors slid open, and Daniel stopped in his tracks.

"Luna, I’ll stay out here."

I gave him a small nod, then walked to the office door and knocked.

Click.

The lock popped open.

I pushed the door in.

On the way here, she’d braced for the worst. A man slumped in his chair, hands clutching his head, eyes bloodshot, completely wrecked. But what she saw was the exact opposite.

Dominic sat behind his desk, the glow from the computer screen washing over his face. He looked up at her, his expression calm, almost too calm.

"Why are you here?" he asked.

She stood in the doorway, suddenly a little lost. She couldn’t tell if he had already swallowed down everything that had just happened, or if he was just acting like nothing was wrong for her sake.

She stepped closer. "You didn’t answer your phone. I thought something had happened."

He picked up his phone, glanced at the screen, then set it back down. "I had an important meeting this afternoon. I switched it to silent and forgot to turn it back on."
