Chapter 150: Chapter 150

Lena’s POV

The second she saw him, nausea rolled through her. "What do you want?"

"Can I come in so we can talk?"

"No."

Sylvain’s expression stiffened for a second, but he still pushed on. "Then let’s at least sit somewhere and talk."

"Say whatever you came to say right here. If that’s it, I’m closing the door." She started shoving it shut.

"Wait, wait." He lifted both hands at once. "Fine. I’ll say it."

She stared at him coldly. There was nothing between them that even felt like father and daughter anymore.

He chose his words carefully. "Lena, can you talk to Dominic for me? My business is in trouble and I need help. If he’s willing to step in, even just enough to keep things from falling apart..."

Of course. She had already seen it coming. Sylvain never showed up for no reason, and that reason was never her. Even so, hearing it out loud still left a hollow ache in her chest, like something had been scraped clean out of her.

"No." She didn’t hesitate for even a second.

She shut the door and leaned back against it.

She should’ve been used to this by now. He had never asked if she was eating okay, sleeping okay, doing okay at work, or even whether she was still alive. His name only ever popped up on her phone when he needed something.

That afternoon, Anna called.

"Daniel and I are going to my grandfather’s birthday this weekend. He’s already packed three huge bags of gifts." Anna sounded amused and helpless at the same time. "I told him to take fewer gifts. He nodded, smiled, and then went online and ordered more. Like, seriously."

Lena wanted to laugh, but what came out sounded drained. "At least your problem is kind of a nice one."

Anna immediately caught the shift in her tone. "What’s wrong?"

One week. Dominic had been gone for a whole week. No texts. No calls. Not even a single explanation. After their fight that morning, he had walked out of the guest room and never come back.

She hadn’t reached out either. Pride was a messed-up thing. It kept her from even touching her phone.

"Nothing. I just had a very peaceful week."

Anna didn’t press for more. “Come with us. You’re not working, and you’ve got nothing tying you down right now. Just treat it like a little getaway.”

“I won’t be in the way?”

“You know what this is about. Come on.”

“I’ll think about it.”

“No need. I’m picking you up tomorrow morning.” Just like that, she made the call for her.

The next morning, Anna called before sunrise. She was already on the road.

Lena packed light. Two changes of clothes, toiletries, that was it. By the time she came downstairs, Daniel was standing beside his truck with both hands in his pockets, waiting.

“Dominic still hasn’t come home?” Anna took her bag and lowered her voice.

“No.” Lena gave a small shrug. “It’s fine.”

Anna frowned hard. “What the hell happened between you two? You haven’t told me anything.”

Lena slowed, hesitated for a second, then stopped. After that, she told Anna about Gemma.

Anna’s face darkened on the spot. “Are you serious? There was someone else too? Before Eliza?”

Lena let out a dry, humorless laugh. “Looks like it.”

“Then what was Eliza? What is any of this supposed to be?”

Lena shook her head. She had no idea what Eliza was. Honestly, she didn’t even know what she was to him.

“Ask Daniel where Dominic is.” Anna’s jaw tightened. “A whole week with zero contact? Nah. That’s not okay.”

Lena wanted to ask too. Badly. She just didn’t want to be the first one to crack.

Daniel put her bag in the back seat. Lena climbed into the rear. Anna started to follow her there, but Lena stopped her.

“Sit in the front. He’s your partner, not your chauffeur. Don’t treat him like a driver.”

Anna paused, looked at her, then at the passenger seat, and finally got in up front.

"Anyway, we’re switching off driving later, so the seat really doesn’t matter." She clicked her seat belt into place.

The first stretch of the trip was quiet. The music played low, soft enough to blur into the background. Lena closed her eyes. She hadn’t been sleeping well lately, and before long, the drowsiness pulled her under.

Anna’s POV

Anna glanced back. Lena was leaning against the window, her breathing slow and even.

She turned to Daniel and lowered her voice. "Was it hard for you to get time off?"

"Not really. I told the Alpha I was going with my mate to a family gathering. He said yes."

Anna frowned a little. He’d said it so casually, like it was no big deal.

After checking the mirror again to make sure Lena was still asleep, she tested the waters. "Has Alpha Dominic been really busy lately?"

"Yeah. He left the territory."

"What?" Her voice caught in her throat. "When?"

"Is he coming back soon?"

"He should be. I just don’t know the exact date yet."

Her chest tightened hard. She was angry for Lena, even if Lena couldn’t hear any of this. "Was it for work or something personal?"

Daniel flicked her a quick glance. "Work."

"You sure?"

"I can’t share details, but yeah, it was work. It came up out of nowhere. He had me book his flight before dawn."

Anna could understand an emergency business trip. Life happened, sure. But what she couldn’t wrap her head around—seriously, not at all—was how a man could leave without even sending his own mate a single message.

"It’s fine." She swallowed down the irritation rising in her chest. "I trust you."

He looked at her. "Thanks."

"What for?"

"So you’d believe me."

Lena turned her head and looked out the window. Around noon, they pulled into a rest stop. She had wanted to drive, but Daniel wouldn’t let her. He was wide awake, full of energy, and faster behind the wheel, which saved them time.

In the afternoon, they stopped again.

Lena’s POV

She woke up at the second rest stop and insisted on driving for two hours. After a round of back-and-forth bargaining, Daniel finally gave in, though not without laying down one strict rule.

The second Anna told him to take a break, he went straight to the back seat and shut his eyes. Weirdly obedient over the smallest things. That was so Daniel.

Lena drove. Anna sat in the passenger seat, and the two of them started chatting. Work, gossip, and those awful reality shows they had both secretly watched alone at midnight.

After a while, Anna brought him up.

"Daniel said Dominic should be back soon." She chose her words carefully. "When he comes back, don’t go running to him. Let him come to you. And don’t pick up his first call."

A faint smile tugged at Lena’s lips. "I’m not some pet he can whistle for whenever he wants."

"Exactly." Anna folded her arms, clearly annoyed. "A whole week without contacting you. I don’t care how busy he was. He could’ve sent one text. Just one."

She was right. And the part of Lena that had been pretending this whole time that she didn’t care finally gave up and admitted it—yeah, it hurt.

"Seriously," Anna went on, getting more fired up. "Busy isn’t an excuse. What, are you telling me he didn’t eat, didn’t sleep, didn’t even go to the bathroom? He couldn’t spare thirty seconds to send a text?"

"If someone doesn’t care, they’ll never have time." Lena kept her eyes fixed on the road. "People always say if a man really loves someone, even in the middle of a crisis, he’ll still find a way to reach her."

"And if he doesn’t care, he could be doing absolutely nothing all day and still not bother."

Before Daniel, Anna barely had any relationship experience at all. Everything she knew about men and love came from watching other people. No hands-on experience whatsoever, yet somehow her theories always hit way too hard.

"He left you hanging for a week, so do the same to him. Let him have a taste of being ignored." Anna crossed her arms again.

Lena laughed softly. "He wouldn’t care."

Someone who could actually understand how other people felt wouldn’t have done this in the first place. If Lena ignored Dominic, he’d probably just shrug and move on like it was nothing.

They took turns driving and finally reached the small town closest to Anna’s home at around ten that night.
