Chapter 36: Chapter 36

Lena’s POV

After that day, things between me and Dominic slid right back into that chilly, familiar balance. Most of the time I didn’t even catch a glimpse of him. I just buried myself in work at the office, letting endless tasks fill up every hour so I wouldn’t think about... anything else.

I tried my best to shove aside the questions about his previous partner. And he acted like nothing had ever happened—like that moment on the couch didn’t even exist.

One ordinary lunch break, I walked out of our usual salad place with two coworkers. The sunlight was way too bright, and we were ranting about never-ending workloads and our nightmare boss, just like everyday venting.

Then a car screeched to a stop right beside us. The sharp sound made my whole body jolt. And the second I saw who jumped out, my stomach twisted painfully.

Luke.

The same Luke who got warned—no, wrecked—by Dominic behind the dry-cleaner’s alley. Back then he ran off terrified, beaten and shaking. And now he had the nerve to show up again?

He came straight at me like he’d been tracking me, grabbing my wrist in a crushing grip before I could even react. Persistent didn’t even begin to describe this guy—more like a nightmare that refused to fade.

"Let go of me!" I tried to yank free, but his fingers clamped down harder, like he was welding himself to my arm.

"Come with me." He didn’t even look at my face when he said it. The words came out through clenched teeth as he dragged me toward his beat-up car.

"Luke, are you out of your mind?" I smacked his arm with my free hand, even kicked at his shin, but he acted like I was hitting a brick wall. He shoved me toward the car without blinking.

My coworkers froze in place, pale as sheets. One of them squeaked something. They looked terrified—he was giving off that unhinged, nothing-to-lose vibe, and it scared them stiff.

Luke managed to shove me into the car and slammed the door so hard it cut off my shouting. The space instantly filled with the heavy, nauseating smell of his cologne, making my whole chest tighten.

I lunged for the door handle, yanking desperately. Nothing. I scrambled toward the driver’s side in a last-ditch attempt to escape, but he leaned in fast, one hand clamping down on my shoulder like a vise and forcing me back into the seat.

"Don’t bother, sweetheart." His breath was hot and ragged, his eyes lit with something completely unhinged. "I’ve been watching for days. That Alpha of yours doesn’t give a damn where you go or who you’re with." He leaned in closer, and I felt bile rise. "You and I aren’t done."

He turned back toward my coworkers, plastering on a fake smile that looked like it hurt his face. "She’s my girlfriend. Just a little fight. Mind your own business unless you want trouble."

Then he slid into the driver’s seat. The doors were locked. I pounded on the window anyway, my voice muffled and useless inside the car.

That’s when I heard it—the roar of an engine behind us. Something primal twisted in my gut. I turned just in time to see a black car tearing toward us, not slowing down, not hesitating.

And then—

A deafening crash.

The impact slammed through the entire car like a punch from a giant. My head nearly struck the window. For a second, the world spun so hard I couldn’t even breathe.

Metal screamed. The whole frame buckled. One of the wheels dragged at an impossible angle, scraping the pavement in a shrill, awful sound.

Luke’s car was done. Completely disabled. Stopped cold.

Luke was still dazed from the impact, his forehead having slammed into the steering wheel. A beat later, confusion flipped straight into rage. He yanked the window down and barked at the black car that had rammed us. "Are you freaking blind?! You got a death wish or what?!"

Then his shouting cut off—like someone hit a mute button.

Because the door of that car opened, and Dominic Voss stepped out.

He wore a plain black shirt, sleeves casually rolled to his forearms, the muscles there tight and defined. The afternoon sun carved sharp edges along his face, and those cool gray eyes of his... they didn’t look angry. They were worse—calm in a way that made your heartbeat trip over itself.

Not only did Luke freeze, I did too. Why was he here? At this time? A hundred questions crashed through my head all at once.

Dominic walked straight toward my side of the car. The door I’d fought with earlier and couldn’t budge—he opened it like it weighed nothing.

He leaned in, one hand reaching for me—not grabbing, just steadying my arm. "Come out."

His grip was firm, warm, grounding me instantly. He didn’t let go until my feet were firmly on the ground.

"Get in the car." He jerked his chin toward his own black vehicle, which had barely taken a scratch.

I didn’t hesitate. I ran to it, yanked the door open, and climbed inside. The cabin was filled with Dominic’s sharp cedar scent, instantly washing away the sickening stench Luke left clinging to me.

Curling up in the passenger seat, still trying to get my breath under control, I stared out the window. Luke’s door had jammed from the crash, and he was scrambling out through the passenger side instead.

His face was twisted with pain and fury, but the second he looked up and saw Dominic standing just a few steps away, all that anger froze solid.

"This isn’t the first time," Dominic said, every word slicing through the air with icy warning. "And I’m done tolerating you."

Luke’s body trembled under the sheer pressure of an Alpha’s dominance. Fear flickered through his eyes, but there was still that stubborn, cornered madness burning underneath.

He snapped, voice cracking from panic. "Why the hell are you so obsessed with Lena?! She’s just some useless Omega—some fake little bitch who—"

Dominic cut him off, voice flat, absolute, and cold enough to burn. "You don’t get to ask that. All you need to know is to stay away from her."

Luke realized then that his plan had fallen apart. His eyes darted, calculating, flicking from his wrecked car to Dominic.

Then he noticed someone else approaching, and his expression twisted with smug relief. Propping himself up, he sneered at Dominic. "You won’t really hurt me. My father—our packs are allies. If you touch me, you’re breaking the alliance!"

Dominic didn’t react. Not even a blink. His lips even curved into a sharp, humorless smile.

"Is that so?" he said softly. And without warning, he drove his boot straight into Luke’s chest.

A sharp crack split the air. Luke collapsed with a scream, curling in on himself as the sound of his own rib snapping echoed around us.

"My ribs...!" He stared up at Dominic, eyes wide with panic, like he couldn’t believe this Alpha actually went all in.

Dominic didn’t even pause. He stepped forward and landed two clean, brutal kicks to Luke’s legs. Another pair of snaps followed, louder this time, and Luke’s howl tore out of him, raw and desperate.

"Relax," Dominic said, voice flat as he looked down at Luke writhing on the ground. "You’re a werewolf. You’ll heal. Just... not anytime soon."

Luke’s face drained of all color. He stared at Dominic as if he was facing a monster. "You—you’re insane! My father won’t let you get away with this!"

Dominic pulled out his phone without a word and dialed right in front of him.

"Slade?" Dominic’s tone was icy enough to freeze the air. "This is Dominic Voss, Alpha of the Bloodmoon Pack. Your son just tried to kidnap my mate. Again. Third time."

There was frantic yelling on the other end, but Dominic cut the man off.

"Listen, Slade. I’ve already broken a few of his ribs and both his legs. This is the final warning. If Luke shows up near my mate again, if he sets foot on my territory, I’ll wipe your entire pack off the map myself."

He let out a low, humorless breath. "Alliances, treaties—they mean nothing if you can’t control your own son. Handle it, or deal with the fallout."

With that, Dominic hung up, not even waiting for a response.

Luke lay on the pavement shaking, sweat dripping down his face. He finally understood. Dominic wasn’t bluffing. This man would really take on a whole pack for me.

Dominic crouched down and murmured something right against Luke’s ear. I couldn’t hear the words, but whatever he said made Luke’s eyes snap wide open. Pure terror washed over his face.

Then he nodded—frantically, desperately—like he’d just agreed to anything Dominic asked.

Watching all this, my heartbeat was all over the place. Dominic had pushed me away twice already, using cold agreements and cruel lines to keep a wall between us. Maybe he even had another she-wolf in his thoughts.

But he’d also saved me—twice. He tore me out of Luke’s hands when I had thought no one was coming.

This man was a contradiction—someone who kept his distance, yet always showed up the moment I needed him most.
