Chapter 38: Chapter 38
Lena’s POV
I was brushing my teeth, getting ready to crash into bed and spend Christmas on my own.
Right then, I heard movement at the front door downstairs—footsteps. I froze instantly. No one ever came up this tower unannounced; Daniel always called before coming.
Someone had broken in. I shut off the bathroom light and slowly slipped to the top of the stairs, pressing myself against the wall, barely breathing.
Those footsteps were steady, unhurried—definitely a man. And before I saw his shadow, I caught a familiar scent.
Cold cedar, like winter biting at your nose. Dominic.
He appeared at the bottom of the stairs, looking terrible. His face was deathly pale, exhausted like he hadn’t slept in days, with dark shadows under his eyes.
My heart was pounding so loudly he could probably hear it. I stepped out of the shadows and said, "You scared me. I thought someone really broke in."
He lifted his head, and in the dim light, those gray eyes met mine, unreadable as always.
"Celeste wants us at the estate," he said. No greeting, no explanation for his disappearance. "It’s Christmas. She wants you and me there."
I froze, and that sharp sting of disappointment rose up anyway.
So that’s why he came back. Not for me—just because Celeste called.
"Alright," I tried not to show anything, "I guess that’s what I should do. What time tomorrow?"
"Now," he said. "Daniel’s waiting outside."
Daniel drove us to the estate. Dominic and I sat in the backseat, one on each side, completely silent.
When we arrived, Celeste was already waiting at the door, smiling as she came toward us. "Merry Christmas, sweetheart."
On Christmas morning, everyone gathered around the long dining table for breakfast. Theodore sat at the head, Celeste beside him, and I was placed next to Dominic.
Not long after, Daniel appeared at the doorway and said, "Alpha, the Slades are here."
The news jolted me, my fork stopping midair.
"Let them in," Theodore said.
Luke’s father, Conrad Slade, stepped in first, wearing a smile that looked way too eager, almost a bit fawning.
His mother, Caroline Slade, followed right behind him with the same pasted-on smile, though hers was even stiffer. And trailing after them was Luke, head down, silent like he wished he could disappear.
The moment I saw him, my fingers tightened into a fist under the table.
Theodore’s voice cut through the room, cold as ice. "Conrad, what exactly are you here for today?"
Conrad bowed to Theodore and Celeste, then cleared his throat. "Alpha Theodore, the Slade family used to be a branch of the Bloodmoon Pack. We’ve always considered ourselves part of it, and we still do. That’s why we’re here—to fix what went wrong."
He kept going. "We found out Luke did some... unacceptable things. Alpha Dominic was very upset about it. So today, we brought Luke over to offer Alpha Dominic a sincere apology. It won’t happen again."
In the two minutes he’d been in this room, Conrad hadn’t spared me even half a smile. He hadn’t even deigned to glance in my direction.
And yet the one who should be receiving the apology was obviously me.
But underneath every word he said, the message was loud and clear: I’m supposed to forgive Luke. I should be magnanimous. Because I’m just an Omega, and I need to stay in my place.
Before, back in the Blueridge Pack, I swallowed every insult, kept my head down, made myself small. I was the unwanted Omega, and I knew speaking up came with a price I couldn’t pay.
But now? I don’t owe that pack anything anymore.
The emotions I’d been holding back finally surged up.
"Excuse me." My voice broke the silence, and everyone turned toward me at once.
"You’re saying Luke messed up, but you’re not saying what he actually did." I didn’t raise my voice—I didn’t have to. "So how about I say it for you."
Conrad’s smile vanished instantly.
