Chapter 47: Chapter 47

Lena’s POV

I buried my face against his chest, fingers locked on his shoulders, my whole body pressing against him. The pose looked messy, sure, but nowhere near embarrassing.

"Lena."

He said my name in that low, restrained tone of his, something heavy tucked underneath it, hidden under the usual ice. Like a coal smothered under a rock—burning, but with nowhere to flare out.

I didn’t move.

My breath seeped through his shirt, warm and damp, heating the skin under it. His chest rose faster, heartbeat thumping harder than before; I could feel every beat.

He wanted me off him—I could tell. But with broken pots and spilled soil all around, he probably didn’t want me getting cut. So he held still. And I held still.

"Get up," he said above me, each word squeezed out through his teeth.

Like I’d actually listen. Hard-won spot like this, I wasn’t giving up. I rubbed my cheek against his shirt, dragging out my voice. "Quit it. It’s warm here. Let me stay a bit."

"Don’t you feel any shame?"

"You’re my mate." I tightened my hold on him. "Why would I feel ashamed? Dominic, seriously, lying on you is... kinda great."

He didn’t reply. But silence—that stuff can hit way harder than words.

I rested on his chest, listening to that heartbeat—solid, powerful, steady—like it was declaring something all on its own. And honestly, with a heartbeat that strong, how could he possibly be cursed?

I’d never asked him what that so-called curse really was.

"Dominic," I said softly. "Is there something you’ve always wanted to do?"

"What, are you granting wishes now?" His voice carried this faint, mocking edge. "With what, exactly?"

I pressed my lips together. Rude. But yeah... not wrong.

"But what if I can?" I insisted.

"Funny. There is something I want to do right now."

I lifted my head, curious. "And what’s that?"

He looked down at me, his face blank. "Get off me."

I buried my face back against his chest like I hadn’t heard him at all.

"You’re seriously testing my patience." His brows pulled tight.

"I’m already behaving, believe it or not." I shut my eyes again. "Stop talking. Just... let me stay here."

The greenhouse was warm in that perfect, cozy way, the kind that made every breath feel soft, the faint floral scent wrapping around me like a quiet lullaby.

I’d only meant to sneak in a little harmless advantage, nothing excessive. But lying there, soaking in Dominic Voss’s body heat, listening to the steady thump of his heartbeat... a drowsiness slipped over me before I even noticed, slow and unstoppable, like a tide rolling in.

I fell asleep.

I had no idea how long I was out. I snapped awake all of a sudden.

Opening my eyes, the first thing I saw was a mess of shattered pots and scattered petals. Then I lifted my head—only to meet Dominic’s icy stare dead-on.

I scrambled off him instantly. "How long was I out?"

He didn’t answer. He drew in a slow breath, pushed himself upright, brushed off his clothes, and stood. One hand drifted to his lower back, pressing lightly.

I stared at that hand. "Your back hurts?"

He shot me a sidelong glance, silent, and stepped forward—but after being pinned under me so long, his movements were stiff, almost awkward.

I moved toward him. "Let me help you."

I barely got two steps before he knocked my hand away. "Don’t touch me."

I stopped where I was, watching him stagger toward the exit. Under my breath, I muttered, "I pinned you down for so long and got nothing out of it. Not even a tiny reward."

His steps faltered for a split second—no turning back, though. I trailed after him out of the greenhouse.

When we got back to the main house, Celeste spotted us the second we walked in. A knowing smile spread across her face. Sylvian and the others were still there, looking at us with these weird, unreadable expressions. I didn’t bother asking.

Sylvian stood the moment he saw us and declared he was leaving. I hadn’t said a single word since we arrived, and he seemed thrown off by my silence, but still left with Celia and Lily.

I didn’t walk them out. I honestly never wanted to see them again if I could help it.

Then Alpha Theodore called Dominic to the study.

The hall went quiet, leaving only Celeste and me.

She lifted my hand gently, eyes curved with a soft smile. "Seeing you two today... honestly, it made me feel so much better. I knew it. You really do have a way of getting under his skin."

I blinked, the scene in the greenhouse flashing through my mind, leaving me a bit speechless. Dominic, letting me get under his skin? More like... he just doesn’t know how to deal with me.

Celeste let out a long breath, her smile fading as something heavier settled in her gaze. "Lena, I probably shouldn’t say this, but I’m going to anyway." She hesitated, then continued, "Every she-wolf who tried to get close to Dominic before you—every single one—ran off. Some bolted immediately. Others lasted a few days at most."

She squeezed my hand lightly as she said it. "But you stayed. That means something, whether you realize it or not. And the truth is... we really do need you. We need you to have his pup, just like the agreement says."

I looked straight at her. "Do you honestly think I can help Dominic break the curse?" I asked quietly.

Ever since I arrived in the Bloodmoon Pack, she’d brought up the curse again and again. I had to be Dominic’s true love—that was the only way. "Celeste... do you really believe he could ever love me?" My voice dropped at the end.

Her expression tightened for a second, as if she were weighing every word. When she finally spoke, her tone was soft but careful.

"I’m sure of it," she said. "I just can’t explain it right now. All I can tell you is this: keep treating Dominic the way you do. I’d bet anything that sooner or later, he’ll realize he needs you."

"Celeste, I need to be honest." I paused, searching for the right words. "I can’t force Dominic into anything." I swallowed. "I’m here for him—really here—but having a pup... that’s something both of us have to want."

I hesitated, then added, "If he loves me, he’ll want that future with me. If he doesn’t, I can’t make him. And honestly? He’s pushed me away so many times I’ve lost count."

Yeah. He kept his distance every chance he got, in all the small, subtle ways that stung the most.

Celeste stayed silent. She didn’t argue.

By the time we left the Bloodmoon estate, night had settled deep and dark, trees sliding past the windows in long shadows.

I stared ahead, then asked suddenly, "Dominic... are you really never going to be able to love me?"

His hands tightened on the steering wheel, just barely. He shot me a quick glance. "What, are you scared of me now?"

"I’m not scared of you," I said, meeting his eyes. "I’m scared you’ll never be able to love anyone again. Including me."

He let out a short, cold laugh. "What made you bring that up?"

"Because only true love can break the curse, right?" My voice stayed soft, but every word landed. "If your heart is still with Eliza... if you can’t let her go... then our whole contract means nothing."

The traffic light ahead flipped red. He braked harder than usual, the seatbelt jerking me forward.

"Do you still think about her?" I turned toward him. "When Eliza walked away... did she take your ability to love with her?"

"Don’t push me." The light flipped green, and Dominic hit the gas again. His voice sounded calm on the surface, but underneath... there was a kind of danger in it that I couldn’t quite name. "You think you know anything?"

"What I know is that you never even tried to give us a real shot." My voice shook despite my effort to hold myself together. "You treat me like some tool, something to break your curse. But you’ve never once tried to love me."

His breathing hitched, rougher, faster. I could see the tension in his hands, the way his knuckles turned stark white around the steering wheel.

"If your heart is still stuck on someone who’s already gone," I pushed on, each word catching in my throat, "then say it. Just tell me so I know I’m wasting my time. So I know I’ll never matter to you. Not even a little."

Outside, the night swallowed everything. The road, the sky, all black as ink, with only our headlights cutting two harsh white lines forward.

Dominic was driving way too fast.

And it wasn’t the kind of fast that meant he was in a hurry. It was the kind that looked like he had completely lost control, weaving through traffic, forcing lane changes, not even bothering with turn signals—just flooring it whenever he saw an opening.

My hand clamped onto the door handle, my knuckles drained of all color.

"Can you slow down?" I turned toward him, my heart lodged in my throat.

He didn’t answer. His jaw was locked tight, eyes glued to the road ahead like the entire world had narrowed to that single stretch of asphalt and nothing I said could reach him.

Streetlights flashed past the windows, orange light sweeping over his face—I saw sweat beading on his forehead, a thin sheen, and the tendons in his neck pulled taut.

"Dominic, you’re still thinking about her, aren’t you?" My voice shook violently. "That’s why you’ll never love me, right? You never will—"

Before I could finish, the car jerked violently.

He swerved hard to the side, tires screeching as he slammed on the brakes. The seatbelt yanked me back so sharply my chest burned, the breath knocked clean out of me.

I didn’t even have time to gasp before he turned, one hand gripping the back of my neck, dragging me toward him.

Then his mouth crashed onto mine—urgent, fierce, burning with a pressure that felt like all the emotions he’d been choking down had finally detonated.

His hand held me so tightly I couldn’t move at all. My heartbeat went wild, my mind blanking out completely.

There was nothing gentle in that kiss, no hesitation—only dominance, intensity, a force that swallowed me whole and left me nowhere to escape.
