Chapter 49: Chapter 49
Lena’s POV
That night when I got back to the tower, Dominic never showed. In a week, the full moon would hit.
The next morning, Samuel knocked on my door. He walked in looking way too energetic for this hour, that usual teasing smirk on his face, but his hand tightened around a thick envelope.
"So," he leaned on the doorframe, arms crossed, his voice light, "the curse kicked in last night. From what I heard, it was pretty intense." He tilted his head, eyeing me like he was waiting for me to break down. "Did you see it? Were you freaked out?"
I met his gaze. "I wasn’t scared."
I’d bet this was the last answer he expected. His eyebrows shot up. He stared for a few seconds before dropping the envelope onto my table.
"He left Bloodmoon territory this morning. Alone." Samuel’s tone suddenly tightened, "He went deep into the eastern mountains. There’s an old sealing ground there. He’s spending the full moon there." He paused, eyes darkening. "He told me to give this to you."
I looked at the envelope, a chill crawling up my spine. "What is it?"
"A termination contract. And a check." Samuel locked eyes with me. "Enough for you to live comfortably anywhere you want."
My heart dropped like a stone. "Why? He said I could stay with him during the full moon."
Samuel’s expression grew complicated. "Lena... do you actually understand what kind of curse this is?"
I thought of that night in the study—white fangs, black veins spreading like cracks, those scarlet eyes burning with something that wasn’t his. "I’ve seen him transform."
"That wasn’t the real deal." Samuel shook his head. "You think it’s manageable because you’ve never seen Dominic fully lose control. Full moons hit him differently. When it comes, Dominic disappears. Completely. The beast takes over. No reason. No restraint. No recognition." His voice dropped. "He wouldn’t know you. Or me. Or anyone. He only kills."
A sharp sting twisted in my stomach. I tried to picture that version of him—wild, empty, merciless. It made my breath hitch.
"And," Samuel added, quieter, "he’s scared this time will be worse. The curse keeps escalating. He thinks he might turn into something he can’t come back from. So he chose to take it alone instead of risking you."
I walked toward the table, staring at the envelope like it might bite. "He really thinks I’d walk away because of a check?"
Samuel let out a laugh that sounded tired more than amused. "Honestly? Most people would. It’s enough money to live your dream life."
I picked up the envelope. It felt heavier than it should. "And if I don’t sign?"
"Then you wait." Samuel shrugged lightly. "Wait for him to come back—if he can. But Lena... even if he does, he might not be the Dominic you know anymore."
So after sleeping with me... Dominic still chose to let me go.
Pain twisted through my stomach, sharp and messy. Why wouldn’t he just believe what I felt for him? If Dominic didn’t want me, fine—then I didn’t want him either. I’d go out with someone else, maybe grab a date with another wolf. Daniel and Samuel would definitely make sure he heard about it.
I called Anna and told her things between us were basically done.
"What’s that supposed to mean?" she asked over the phone.
"It means that when he comes back to the Bloodmoon Pack, we’ll end the bond," I said, keeping my voice steady. "Anna, I’m getting my freedom back."
She went quiet for a beat, then said, "Okay. We’re going out for drinks. Right now."
We ended up at her favorite bar—warm, lively, full of soft lights and great cocktails. We stayed there for hours.
We laughed at nothing, talked about everything. Anna teased Dominic’s icy face, icy tone, his whole icy vibe, and I laughed along, even though his tense, pained expression kept flashing in my mind.
It was past midnight by the time Anna walked me back to the tower.
We lay on the same bed in the dark, both exhausted yet too wired to sleep. The ceiling above us was completely still.
"So," Anna said, "when he comes back to break the bond... are you actually okay with it?"
"Of course." I answered without missing a beat.
She turned to look at me. "Seriously?"
"He was never mine to begin with. I mean it."
Anna propped herself up on one elbow, studying me like she could read right through me. "Lena. Your voice does this thing—you say stuff out loud when you’re still trying to convince yourself."
"You’re in love with him," Anna said, not unkindly. "It’s okay to admit it."
"I’m not." I said again, but even I could feel my certainty slipping.
"All right." She lay back down. "You’re not."
Silence stretched out between us.
"He made it pretty clear," I whispered. "We’ll end the bond when he comes back. That’s what he wants."
"I know," Anna said.
"So there’s really nothing to admit."
"I know," she murmured again, even softer this time.
After that, neither of us spoke. It took only a few minutes for Anna to drift off, but I just lay there beside her, staring into the dark with my eyes wide open.
Dominic was fine. The curse was contained. When he came back, he would end our bond, and I would move on with my life.
That was it.
At least, that’s what I kept repeating to myself until sleep finally dragged me under.
After Dominic left, I moved out of his tower and rented a small apartment on my own.
I went back to work like normal, burying myself in tasks and meetings. A week later, everything from the past few months felt like some blurry fever dream.
One afternoon, I was topping off my coffee in the break room when two coworkers followed me in.
One of them, Priya, leaned her elbow on the counter. She was giving me this curious look, like a question had been simmering in her head for days.
"Hey, Lena," she finally said. "We haven’t seen your Alpha pick you up in a while."
"Yeah," I replied, trying to keep it light. "He hasn’t been around because we ended our bond."
Technically, Dominic hadn’t come back yet. But once he did, it would all be finalized. Same difference.
Priya’s eyes flew wide. Owen, a young beta standing next to her, nearly bumped into her from how fast she froze.
"What happened between you two?" Priya asked.
"Nothing dramatic." I flashed a small smile and grabbed my cup. "We just weren’t a good match. It happens. No need to dive into it."
They both nodded, backing off immediately. They were good people—they knew where to stop.
But someone still passed the news to Alpha Ethan. I had no idea who. That night, while I was cooking dinner, his name lit up my screen.
"Lena." His voice sounded unusually careful. "I heard about you and Dominic. So... you two broke up?"
Ethan had made his interest in me clear more than once, and I’d told him "no" every single time. I honestly thought that Chapter of my life was closed.
So I told him, "Yeah, and what exactly are you trying to say?"
"The bond between you two is gone." He hesitated. "So... does that mean I might actually have a shot now?"
"No, Ethan." I switched to speaker and kept stirring the pot. "I’ve said it from day one—there’s nothing between us, and there never will be. Please stop calling about this."
There was a long stretch of silence on the other end. "Alright," he finally said, his voice cooling fast. "Take care then."
He hung up. I went right back to cooking, not giving Ethan a single extra thought.
Three days later, Anna called, saying she’d picked out a restaurant and dragged me out for dinner.
The place wasn’t big, but it had that warm, cozy vibe. When I walked in, I spotted Anna by the window—and someone sitting next to her.
I stopped in my tracks.
The man turned his head, meeting my eyes. His expression tightened into something complicated—relief mixed with a nervous kind of tension, like he wasn’t sure if he should breathe or brace himself.
I shifted my gaze to Anna.
