Chapter 65: Chapter 65
Lena’s POV
The door clicked shut, and Lena finally let out a long breath.
She hadn’t asked Dominic where he was going, because this wasn’t exactly new. He’d disappeared like this before, more than once, always with the same copy-paste excuse: he had something to deal with. If she asked him on Christmas morning, he’d probably say the exact same thing.
Yeah, she was curious.
But she wasn’t about to chase him down and beg for answers.
She lay back on the bed, absently scrolling through her phone, her mind half-empty, half-noisy. Then a call lit up the screen. The name made her thumb freeze in midair.
Lily.
The phone kept ringing. Lena stared at it for a second longer before finally answering. “Hello?”
“Lena.” Lily’s voice was faint, shaky, barely there. “I’m at the clinic. Can you come?”
Lily never called her. They weren’t close. Not even remotely.
Still, Lena went.
She found Lily in the back room of the pack healer’s clinic, lying on a narrow bed behind a curtain. The whole place smelled sterile and bitter, like herbs and medicine mashed together. The light overhead was too white, too cold, making Lily look even paler than usual.
“What happened?” Lena asked.
“I’m miscarrying.” Lily kept her eyes on the ceiling, like she couldn’t bear to look at anything real. “The healer gave me medicine... to help it pass.”
Lena went still.
For a moment, she didn’t know what to say. Lily’s eyes shifted restlessly, sliding away again and again.
“Don’t tell my mom.”
Lena frowned. “Is it already over?”
“I only took what the healer gave me. She said if it doesn’t all come out, she might have to step in.” Lily swallowed hard, her throat working with effort. “She wanted someone to stay with me.”
Then, after a pause, quieter still, “You’re the only person I could ask.”
“I’m not your family.” The words slipped out before Lena could soften them, though her brow stayed tightly drawn.
By then the medicine was starting to kick in. Sweat began to bead across Lily’s forehead. She pressed her lips together so hard they almost lost color, fighting back the pain, and curled her knees up toward her chest.
Lena had no clue what to do. She’d never dealt with anything like this before.
So she stayed.
When sweat rolled down Lily’s temples, Lena reached for some tissues and gently wiped it away. It felt awkward, strange, too intimate for two people who usually couldn’t stand each other. But she did it anyway.
The cramps got worse fast.
Lily folded in on herself, trembling, and Lena immediately went to get the healer. The healer came in, checked her over, and said her body was responding the way it should, that it was handling things on its own for now.
After the healer left, Lena looked back at Lily, who was breathing through clenched teeth, every muscle in her face tight.
“Why didn’t you just let the healer do it directly?” Lena asked.
Lily bit down hard, her whole expression twisted with pain. “Because I want to remember what this feels like.”
She shut her eyes, her voice thin but sharp.
“So I never make the same mistake again.”
Lena had no idea what she was supposed to say.
She hated Lily. No point sugarcoating it—she really did. Lily had swaggered in and taken the life that should have been hers. But deep down, Lena knew Lily wasn’t the real one to blame. The real mess started with Lily’s mother.
Still, they were both women. And right now, seeing Lily suffer alone in that freezing room, curled up in pain with no one beside her, stirred up something tangled and heavy in Lena’s chest.
The practitioner told Lily to go to the restroom. Lena stayed outside the stall, hovering there, checking on her every so often, scared Lily might black out.
Then the toilet flushed, and a second later the door creaked open.
“How is it?” Lena asked at once.
“It’s out.” Lily clutched the doorframe so hard her knuckles whitened. Her whole body was drenched in sweat, and her face was so pale it looked almost see-through.
Lena took her by the arm and carefully guided her back to the practitioner. After a quick check, the practitioner confirmed everything had passed normally. If Lily rested for another half hour, she could head home.
Lena was helping Lily out of the practitioner’s room when she looked up and saw Dominic coming down the hallway from the other end.
Their eyes met across the corridor.
Lena’s first reaction was pure fear. Did something happen to him? Had the curse flared up again? Was he hurt?
But Dominic only looked at her once, expression unreadable, then turned and walked away.
She had to know.
After settling Lily into a chair in the waiting area, Lena went after him.
She found him in a small room at the far end of the clinic. Eliza was lying on a narrow bed while the practitioner bent over her, pressing herbs against her abdomen. Dominic stood beside the bed, watching over her.
So that was it.
He had gone to Eliza.
That was his so-called “something came up.” Eliza was sick, and he had rushed over in the middle of the night to take care of her.
“Lena.” Eliza noticed her first, her voice soft and weak, almost breakable.
Dominic turned around.
Lena didn’t say a word. She just stood there, taking in the scene in front of her, confirming everything she needed to confirm. Then she turned and walked out.
“Dominic, did Lena get the wrong idea?” Eliza’s gentle voice drifted after her from behind.
Lena kept walking.
She seriously had no energy left for Eliza’s little act right now. She had already confirmed the only thing she came here to confirm—that Dominic was fine. That was it.
Back in the waiting area, Lily lifted her head and looked at Lena. "Is he okay?"
"He’s fine." Lena helped her to her feet, one arm steady around her waist. "He doesn’t need me."
Lily was too drained to say anything else. She leaned most of her weight onto Lena, and the two of them stepped out of the clinic and into the biting night air.
Lena drove her home. Lily had already moved out of the house. The apartment she was staying in was tiny, barely more than a studio. A folding screen cut the bed off from the living space, making the place look even smaller. This was definitely not what Lena would have expected for Celia’s daughter.
She got Lily into bed, pulled the blanket over her, then headed to the kitchen. There was almost nothing there. After opening a few cabinets, she found a can of soup, heated it on the stove, and poured it into a bowl for her.
"Lena, you should go home." Lily had been leaning on her for hours by now. The guilt on her pale face was impossible to miss.
"It’s okay." Lena kept her eyes on the stove, voice quiet.
Lily looked completely wrung out. In a thin, hoarse voice, she said, "Thank you."
"Who was the pup’s father?" Lena asked.
Lily stared at the ceiling.
The silence dragged on so long it almost felt heavy in the room. Then finally, Lena heard her speak.
"He was supposed to choose a mate. His family picked someone for him." She swallowed, like even getting the words out hurt. "When we were together, he told me he’d take me as his mate. Then last week, I found out I was pregnant. Before I could even tell him, he said it first. He said we should stop seeing each other."
Lena felt her stomach twist.
"I had no idea he was already meeting the she-wolf his family chose. This whole time, while he was with me, he was still seeing her behind my back." Lily’s voice shook harder with every word. "At least... at least I found out early."
"Why didn’t you tell him about the pregnancy?" Lena asked.
"Why would I?" Lily sniffed, her mouth tightening. "So I could use the pup to guilt-trip him into staying? That’s not how this works. Blueridge Pack is so small, and I’m nobody. We were never supposed to be together in the first place." She dragged in a shaky breath. "Maybe I am kind of heartless. The second he said it was over, I decided to end the pregnancy. I’m not some saint who can raise a pup alone."
"You’re not heartless," Lena said. "You made the right call."
Lily turned to look at her, eyes swollen and rimmed red. "You’re probably the only one who’d say that. Anyone else would think I’m cruel."
The soup was done. Lena let it cool for a bit before carrying it over to her. Lily leaned against the headboard and took the bowl with both hands. "Thank you."
"Get some real rest for the next few days. Your body needs time to recover."
"I know." She scooped up a spoonful, and tears slipped silently from her eyes into the soup. "I just... never thought the person who’d stay with me through all this would be you."
I let out a soft sigh. "Yeah. I didn’t see it coming either."
She lifted her head and apologized again. "I’m sorry."
"For what?"
"For back then. If my mom hadn’t—"
My face tightened right away. "Don’t. Just don’t."
Lily bit her lip and dropped her gaze back to the bowl in her hands.
Lena stayed with her until after two in the morning. Lily asked her to stay the night, but she turned her down. No matter what had happened tonight, there was still too much bad blood between them.
She drove home alone. Dominic still wasn’t back.
He wasn’t coming home tonight.
She was so wiped out she didn’t even have the energy to think about him, or Eliza, or anything else. The second she hit the bed, she was out cold.
When she woke up, sunlight had already flooded the whole room. She pushed herself up with effort, ran a hand through her messy hair, and shuffled out of the bedroom.
A ridiculously good smell was drifting in from the kitchen.
She looked over.
Dominic was standing by the stove.
He had a spatula in one hand, his back to her. He was wearing a plain white T-shirt, and the morning light traced the strong lines of his arms.
It was just a back view. Just a man making breakfast. Nothing crazy.
And yet that sight hit her straight in the chest, stirring something sharp and unexpected.
She stood in the bedroom doorway for a long moment, just watching, almost afraid that if she moved too fast, the whole scene would crack apart like a dream.
Then she walked to the dining table, leaned against a chair, and asked as evenly as she could, "Are you cooking for her?"
Eliza had gone to the therapist last night. Maybe her stomach was upset. Maybe he was making her something light and bland so she could feel better.
