Christina had tried to convince Olivia to stay a while longer as well, but the latter had refused in the end, returning home to Amherst with the rest of the Roth Family delegation a few days after the former queen departed.

It was disappointing for the young princess, but it wasn’t all bad news on that front.

When Olivia first arrived in Misty City aboard the Roth Family’s Skyship, the Soaring Sword, Christina had nearly gone into a panic.

After the events in the South-West Province, Christina had often thought about how to make up with her estranged childhood friend, but she never imagined an opportunity would present itself so quickly after she settled in Misty City.

Unsure how to even talk to her without it being awkward, Christina had actually been avoiding Olivia right up until the match they had in the youth tournament, which unfortunately only made things more awkward between them.

Knowing that if she just kept doing what she was doing there would never be a chance for reconciliation between them, Christina had made an overture to Olivia inside the ring.

Thankfully, Olivia hadn’t refused outright at that moment, but her response was lukewarm at best.

After some more awkwardness at the banquet that night, Christina decided she needed outside help and consulted with her new friends, hoping to get some kind of clue as to how to start mending fences with Olivia.

Although she got a lot of varied advice, what it all really boiled down to was a suggestion that Christina find a way to spend time with Olivia while working on something they both enjoyed.

After mulling over this advice for a bit, Christina decided to invite Olivia to help her with her bakery. Not in the manual labour sense, but rather in coming up with ways to improve recipes, better store ingredients, and increase the quality of her finished products.

Olivia was a prodigy in the field of Alchemy and had a lot of knowledge regarding concocting medicinal liquids and preparing various types of ingredients, so Christina asking for advice from her in the related field of Spirit Cooking made perfect sense.

At first, Olivia was a bit hesitant, but Christina was persistent, even going so far as to enlist Eris in her efforts, hoping to take advantage of her Sworn Sister’s uncanny gift for making friends with anyone and everyone she met.

The decisive factor, however, came just a couple days before the former queen departed when Christina asked her Senior Brother for a huge favour; allowing Olivia to see the refinement process for his Maple Sugar.

Originally, when she made this request, Lucas had bluntly refused.

Christina was his Junior Sister, but exposing the secret of how Maple Sugar was produced to outsiders, especially to someone from a family that had poor relations with his Master and the Balfour Family, was something he couldn’t agree to.

Tina wasn’t surprised when Lucas said no as she knew she was being unreasonable, but feeling like this might be her last chance to mend her broken childhood friendship, she continued lobbying him until he agreed to at least bring the matter to Celestina.

And so, the afternoon after Ariana left, Lucas and Christina went to their Master to ask for her thoughts.

Neither of the pair expected Celestina to hold an unfavourable view of a girl like Olivia just because of her surname, but give the complex history between the Balfours and Roths, Lucas and Christina fully expected their Master to also refuse.

It thus came as a great surprise when Celestina immediately agreed, granting permission to share not just the final cooking phase, but the entire process of harvesting lych tree sap to processing it into sugar with Olivia and her mother Ava.

Needless to say, Christina and Lucas were stunned by this and couldn’t help asking why such a valuable secret was being so casually shared, but Celestina just told them that ’circumstances had changed’ then refused to elaborate further.

Lucas immediately frowned when he heard this, as he could tell something was wrong from the way his Master and some of the other adults were acting, but if they didn’t want to tell him about it, he wasn’t going to pry... for now.

Receiving full permission from Celestina, Lucas summoned his trusty Head Manager, Victoria, and instructed her to arrange a full tour of the ’sugar lab’ for the two Roth ladies.

For the next 3 days, Olivia Roth and Ava Dalton visited the experimental workshop in the north of Misty City together with Christina, Lucas, and Victoria, both of them expressing great amazement and thorough disapproval repeatedly during this time.

They were amazed that such a valuable product had literally been growing right next to them all these years without them realizing it, and that a young boy like Lucas had discovered it and was preparing to sell it commercially.

As for their disapproval, that was mostly related to how the sap was actually harvested and then processed.

Ava was particularly incensed that such valuable materials were being handled so crudely, something that offended her sense of professionalism as one of only two High-Rank Grade 1 Spirit Alchemists in the Rockwell Kingdom.

Olivia and her mother thus made many suggestions for improvements, something Lucas was more than happy to accept, ordering Victoria and Laura to promptly look into implementing whichever ones made sense.

Working side-by-side with Olivia, brainstorming, laughing, and arguing just like they had when they were younger, seemed to greatly relax the tension between her and Christina, and it brought some benefits to Lucas’ sugar plans, so everyone ended up quite happy with the result.

Still, it would take more than a few days cooperating on a joint project to repair the relationship between these two young girls, so when the time came, Olivia ultimately decided to return home with the rest of her family rather than linger in Misty City.

Lucas later learned that while he was working on refining the sugar production process, Celestina had struck a deal with Joanna Roth to start harvesting and producing sugar in the North-East Province in the near future, a fact that only reinforced the boy’s worries that something serious had happened and that he was being kept out of the loop.

That being said, it wasn’t like Lucas didn’t already have enough work on his hands, so he forced down his curiosity and kept waiting, repeatedly telling himself that he would learn the truth when it was appropriate.
