Aina

"Oh my Goddess, this school is gorgeous and the size of the entire Whitelock Pack territory! I am going to love it here," Aina breathed to herself as she leapt off the bus steps onto the warm, cobblestone driveway of Moonside Academy.

The academy sat magnificently nestled right in the valley between two massive, ancient mountains whose jagged peaks scraped the clouds.

It was legendary for its position because every night when the full moon reached its peak, it hovered directly in the narrow notch between the twin peaks, bathing the entire stone fortress in a blinding, ethereal lunar glow, hence its name, Moonside... well that and the mountain it’s on is also called moonside but the royal family couldn’t tell the public that.

Founded centuries ago by the original King of kings, the academy had cultivated generations of the continent’s most feared warlords, brilliant politicians, and powerful pack leaders.

It was the absolute pinnacle of elite higher education, a place where legends were forged and weak wolves were ground into dust.

Right now, the courtyard was a buzzing hive of overwhelming wealth and raw power.

Students were arriving in a wild mix of forms, some prowled past in massive, sleek wolf forms, their thick fur gleaming in the late afternoon sun, while others strode around in crisp human tailored clothes.

The private driveway was choked with hyper-luxury sports cars and sleek black armored limousines, their metallic paint reflecting the surrounding greenery.

Chauffeurs in white gloves rushed around popping open trunks, unloading stacks of expensive designer luggage for young adults who looked like they belonged on the covers of high-fashion magazines.

Aina stood frozen in the middle of the madness, clutching the straps of her faded, frayed backpack.

Her eyes darted from a girl draped in real silk holding a diamond-encrusted trunk to a guy adjusting a gold watch that probably cost more than her family’s main estate. They all looked so impossibly clean, sophisticated, and untouchable.

Down at her own outfit, her heart sank.

She was wearing now the outfit she got from the people on the train paired with a haircut that looked like someone held a wooden bowl over her head and went to town with kitchen scissors didn’t look so good.

Goddess, Aina thought, her cheeks warming with a sudden flush of embarrassment. I look like a lost country bumpkin. Not wanting to look like a fool any further she took off her glasses and shoved them into her bag, because of this she couldn’t see shit but she’d make her way. In her mind not seeing is better than looking like a dork.

Pulling her shoulders back and tightly clutching her small bag, she forced herself to march through the grand archway leading into the main courtyard.

The architecture was vast, soaring, and distinctly ancient. Massive grey stone pillars held up vaulted arches, stained-glass windows cast deep violet and amber light across the flagstone floors, and wrought-iron chandeliers hung high above like medieval cages.

It felt less like a modern school and more like an ancient royal fortress built to withstand a siege.

As Aina stepped into the echoing main hall, a girl stepped directly into her path, wearing a brilliant, welcoming smile.

The girl had warm bronze skin, bright black eyes, and curly hair pulled back into a neat green ribbon. She wore a silver badge on her crisp blazer, radiating the gentle, calm aura of a Beta.

"New students to the left!" the girl announced cheerfully, thrusting a glossy parchment map directly into Aina’s hands. "Welcome to Moonside! You’ll need to head straight to reception to pick up your campus ID card, dorm assignment card, and welcome packet. Reception is located on the third floor of Building Two, in the East Wing. Just follow the corridor, turn right at the sun tapestry, go up the grand staircase, and take the left bridge, it’s all in the map!" they said pointing to the map in Aina’s hand.

Aina stared blankly at the map in her hands. The paper was a chaotic nightmare of lines, arrows, numbers, and labels. She couldn’t see or understand a single thing the girl was pointing at. It looked like a labyrinth designed by a lunatic.

"Uh... yep! East Wing, third floor, super easy!" Aina lied smoothly, giving a firm, confident nod while her brain frantically repeated: Reception. Third floor. Building... something.

"Great! Next!" the Beta girl called out, turning her bright smile to the student behind Aina.

Aina quickly scampered away before the girl could ask if she needed further directions. She shuffled deeper into the grand stone hallway, her eyes glued to the map as she tried to decipher whether "Building Two" was the giant tower on the left or the giant tower on the right.

She took a blind step forward, completely consumed by her map—

CRASH.

Aina slammed hard into what felt like a solid brick wall wrapped in warm denim. The impact knocked the breath right out of her lungs. She stumbled backward, her hands let go of the map causing it to flutter helplessly to the floor.

"Oh! Oh my gosh, I am so sorry! Sorry, sorry, sorry!" Aina stammered frantically, grabbing her on the ground and looking up to apologize properly.

The words died right in her throat.

The man standing in front of her was not a brick wall. He was a Greek god carved out of raw muscle and broad shoulders. He had messy, hot Auburn hair that looked as though he had just run his hands through it while wet, and eyes the striking, icy shade of polished diamonds.

His crisp white button-down shirt was unbuttoned at the top, rolling up his forearms to reveal thick, sculpted muscles, with a loose red tie hanging carelessly around his neck.

A fiery blush instantly exploded across Aina’s cheeks. Holy Goddess, he is ridiculously hot.

And then, the air shifted.

A heavy, intoxicating scent washed over her senses, a rich, dark blend of cedarwood, crushed crisp pine, and ozone right before a thunderstorm. It hit her like a physical blow, sinking deep into her lungs, making her blood run hot and her knees buckle. Her wolf stirred awake, howling in absolute, undeniable recognition.

MATE.

The word echoed in her mind with the force of a church bell. The goddess had given her a fated mate. A sudden, overwhelming urge flooded her body, a desperate, aching craving to step forward, to wrap her arms around his waist, to bury her face in his neck, and to trace the hard lines of his jaw. Her entire soul screamed for his touch.

She stood up slowly as she reached out a hand instinctively—

"Watch where you’re going, dipshit," a cold, harsh voice sneered.

Before Aina’s fingers could touch his sleeve, a massive, heavy hand slammed onto her shoulder and violently shoved her aside.

Aina staggered laterally, hitting the rough stone wall of the hallway with a sharp thud.

The guy didn’t even pause. He didn’t look back, didn’t care, and certainly didn’t smell her. Because of her scent-dampening cream, her natural omega aroma was completely suppressed. To him, she was just an annoying, poorly dressed boy blocking his path. He strode away, his long, powerful legs carrying him down the corridor without a second thought.

Aina stood frozen against the cold wall, her hand still hovering in the air, her jaw practically resting on the floor.

Dipshit?!

The absolute, jaw-dropping rudeness of it instantly snapped her out of her mate-induced trance. The fiery warmth in her chest turned into a roaring inferno of pure, unfiltered rage.

"Oh my Goddess," Aina muttered under her breath, glaring daggers at his retreating back. "What an absolute, arrogant, unbearable jerk! Fate must be having a laugh. My mate is a complete ass!"

"Hey... are you okay?"

A soft, melodic voice interrupted her furious internal tirade. A gentle tap landed on Aina’s shoulder.

Aina closed her eyes, sighing internally. What now?! She turned around, ready to snap at whoever else was about to ruin her day and stopped dead in her tracks for the second time in three minutes.

Standing in front of her was a girl so breath-takingly gorgeous that Aina forgot how to process words. She had a sleek, blue bob that framed a striking, porcelain face, skin smooth as cream, and bright green eyes that shimmered like emerald jewels under the hall lights. Her hair brushed lightly against her dainty shoulders, and she exuded an air of effortless, royal grace.

"I am so, so sorry about his behavior," the girl said gently, offering a small, apologetic smile. "I saw what my brother just did. He can be an absolute brute."

Aina blinked, her brain short-circuiting slightly. She had no idea she was looking directly at Princess Molly, the younger sister of Prince Malric who is one of the three ruling Alphas of the school.

If this is that rudeass’s sister, I may not mind him.

"Oh... uh, it’s fine," Aina mumbled, rubbing her arm where her mate had shoved her. "I was probably standing right in his way like an idiot."

"No, it’s not your fault," the girl insisted softly, rolling her eyes with fond annoyance. "My brother is just naturally rude to everyone he doesn’t consider an equal. Don’t blame yourself."

Aina let out an awkward, nervous chuckle.

Princess Molly joined in, her laughter soft and musical, echoing lightly through the high-ceilinged corridor. Right at that moment, the afternoon sun broke through the high stained-glass windows, pooling golden light directly across the girl’s face, making her eyes shimmer and her dark blue hair glow like a halo.

Aina literally lost her breath. Without thinking, the words tumbled right out of her mouth before she could stop them: "Sorry, I just have to say... you are so, so beautiful." Molly froze. Her musical laugh cut off, her eyes widening in absolute shock. A soft, dusty pink blush bloomed across her high cheekbones.

"Oh," Molly breathed, placing a small hand over her chest. "No one... no one has ever told me that before." Aina scoffed, waving a hand dismissively. "Impossible. Whoever hasn’t said it must be completely blind or totally jealous. Because wow." A bright, genuine smile broke across Molly’s face, illuminating her features even more. "Well... you might just be the nicest little boy I’ve met at this academy," she said softly, her eyes crinkling warmly. "And you have the sweetest, softest voice."

A cold spike of terror shot through Aina’s spine. Boy! Right! I am a boy! She had been so completely distracted by the girl’s jaw-dropping looks that she had entirely forgotten her lower-register fake voice.

Coughing violently into her fist, Aina aggressively cleared her throat, forcing her voice back down into a scratchy, raspy, distinctly male register. "Ahem! Yeah! Thanks! I mean, uh, thanks, man! But yeah, I really gotta get moving. I’m trying to find reception to get my keycard and room assignment, but this map makes zero sense."

"Reception?" Molly smiled, stepping alongside her without missing a beat. "Oh, I just came from there! It’s super easy to get lost on your first day. Come on, I’ll walk you there."

"Oh, no, no! It’s totally fine, really!" Aina said quickly, waving her hands in panic. "I don’t want to waste your time!"

"I insist," Molly said softly, offering a warm, unshakable smile that made it completely impossible to refuse. "Follow me, little guy."
