"Cedric..." Julian muttered in complete shock.
Because ever since he had fallen unconscious, he hadn’t done that before and this was new.
Julian didn’t know what to do but he knew that he should let the grownups know about this.
He quickly rushed to meet Rebecca and Rosalind in her chamber, "Julian what is it?" Rosalind had asked as she looked at him.
"Why are you running around?" Rebecca then asked him.
He looked between the two women, "Cedric... He just held my hand.
The two women looked at each other for a brief moment before shock spread across their faces, and without wasting another second, they abandoned what they had been doing and hurried after Julian as he led them towards Cedric’s chamber.
Along the way, Rosalind spotted one of the servants passing through the corridor and immediately stopped her. "Quickly, fetch the physician," she instructed without slowing her pace.
"Yes, Your Grace," the servant answered with her head respectfully lowered before hurrying off in the opposite direction, while Rosalind continued after Julian alongside Rebecca until they finally reached Cedric’s chamber.
The three of them entered almost at once, and both women immediately turned their attention towards the unconscious Lord Commander.
Cedric remained exactly as they had left him.
He lay peacefully against the bed with his eyes closed, his chest rising and falling in slow, steady breaths, yet there wasn’t the slightest sign that he had moved.
Rosalind and Rebecca exchanged another uncertain glance before Rosalind finally turned back to Julian, "Julian," she called gently, "are you certain he squeezed your hand?"
The little boy nodded so quickly that there wasn’t even the slightest trace of hesitation.
"I would never lie to you, Rosalind," he answered earnestly, his voice carrying both determination and desperation because he wanted her to believe him.
Rebecca’s heart tightened painfully as she watched her son hurry back to Cedric’s bedside before carefully wrapping his little hand around Cedric’s once more. It was obvious what he was trying to do. He wanted them to see it for themselves because somewhere in his heart, he had begun to fear that they thought he had imagined everything.
The room fell silent as they waited.
Julian watched Cedric expectantly.
Rebecca watched with bated breath.
Even Rosalind found herself silently hoping that Cedric would move again.
Yet nothing happened.
Cedric remained completely still, almost as though Julian had imagined the entire thing, and the movement he had described had never happened at all.
"I swear he held my hand before," Julian whispered, his voice beginning to tremble as tears slowly gathered in his eyes. "He really did..."
His words broke Rebecca’s heart. She knew her son well enough to recognize when he was telling the truth. It was one thing for him to worry that no one believed him, but it was another for him to think that he had dragged them all the way here only to disappoint them.
Unable to bear the sight any longer, Rebecca immediately knelt before him and gently pulled him into her arms.
"I believe you, Julian," she whispered reassuringly as she stroked the back of his head.
The little boy buried his face against her neck, and the tears he had been trying so hard to hold back finally escaped as quiet sobs shook his small shoulders.
Rosalind’s own heart softened at the heartbreaking sight before her, and she found herself biting her lower lip as she watched Julian cry. Not once had she believed he was lying. Julian had never been the kind of child to invent stories simply for attention, nor would he have frightened everyone by making up something so important.
Stepping closer, she gently rested a comforting hand on his shoulder.
"I believe you too, Julian," she said softly, her voice warm with reassurance. "You don’t have to prove anything to us because I know you wouldn’t lie about something like this."
Cedric must have moved at some point. Perhaps it had happened because Julian had been alone with him, and now that so many people had gathered around his bedside, his body simply wasn’t responding again.
Regardless, it wasn’t long before hurried footsteps echoed from the corridor outside, and moments later the physician arrived at the chamber looking slightly out of breath, as though he had come running the entire way after receiving Rosalind’s summons.
He paused at the entrance just long enough to compose himself before bowing respectfully. "Your Majesty, you sent for me?" he asked.
"Yes," Rosalind answered immediately. "Please examine him. Julian said Cedric squeezed his hand, and although he hasn’t done it again, I believe something must have changed."
For a brief moment, surprise crossed the physician’s face because Cedric had remained unconscious for so long that even the slightest response from him was significant. However, he quickly gathered himself and nodded. "Right away, Your Majesty."
Without wasting another second, he walked over to Cedric’s bedside and carefully began his examination while Rebecca stepped back with Julian still tucked close against her side. Rosalind also remained silent as they all watched him work, and the room was soon filled with nothing but the quiet rustle of his robes and the soft sounds of his examination.
Every passing second felt longer than the last as each of them waited anxiously for him to say something, while Julian especially stared at the physician with hopeful eyes, silently praying that he hadn’t imagined what had happened.
After several long moments, the physician finally straightened and turned to face them with a relieved smile that immediately eased some of the tension in the room.
"It is highly possible that the young master truly felt his hand move," he said calmly. "I have just examined him thoroughly, and his body’s response is far stronger than it has been during my previous examinations. That is a very encouraging sign because it tells me his condition has continued to improve, and I believe he will regain consciousness much sooner than we anticipated. At this point, all we have to do is wait patiently for him to open his eyes."
