The newborn children were cleaned up and wrapped in soft blankets. They looked so tiny, and they carried that sweet scent only newborn babies seemed to have. Their mother had also been attended to with equal care. The midwives had cleaned her up, changed the bloodstained sheets beneath her, and made sure the bleeding had stopped while tending gently to the injuries that childbirth had left behind.
"Her Majesty is no longer in any life-threatening condition," the royal physician informed Rowan, who had refused to leave his wife’s side. "However, she has lost a great deal of blood, so she must avoid stress and be given plenty of time to recover."
Rowan gave a quiet nod. "Understood. Thank you, Physician."
The woman bowed respectfully before stepping away to continue checking on the two infants.
Rosalind lay quietly against the pillows, breathing slowly as she tried to regain her strength. The sweat that had covered her forehead had already been wiped away, and although exhaustion weighed heavily on her body, there was finally peace in knowing that it was over.
She still ached more than she could put into words, yet every bit of that pain somehow felt worth enduring. Even now, it still hadn’t fully settled in her mind that she had given birth to twins.
She could hardly understand how she had managed to find the strength to do it. She only remembered holding tightly to Rowan’s hand while fear consumed her, and then, before she truly realized it, both of their children had entered the world safely.
Rosalind still held onto his hand, and Rowan made no attempt to pull away. There was nowhere else he wanted to be. His place was beside his wife.
His eyes slowly settled on her face once more. Watching her lying there, knowing she had endured so much and had come so close to losing her life just to bring their children into the world, filled his heart with emotions he couldn’t begin to describe. Relief, gratitude, admiration, and love all surged together until they became too overwhelming to put into words.
Instead, he leaned down and pressed a lingering kiss to Rosalind’s forehead, remaining there for a long moment until she almost thought he had forgotten to pull away.
"I adore you so much," he whispered before gently brushing his lips against hers.
Rosalind smiled to herself as he finally drew back and took his seat beside the bed.
"Twins..." she murmured, still sounding as though she could hardly believe it herself.
A quiet smile spread across Rowan’s face. Even he was still trying to take it all in. "You really couldn’t do things halfway, could you?" he asked, his voice carrying a hint of amusement.
Rosalind managed a weak shrug.
"I’m so proud of you," he said sincerely. "And I’m so grateful... I don’t even know how to explain it. I just feel incredibly blessed."
Rosalind’s heart softened at his words. There was a time when Rowan could barely express what he felt, yet now the emotions in his eyes spoke even before his words did. Seeing that change filled her with a quiet happiness of her own.
Before either of them could say anything else, the midwives returned carrying the two infants wrapped snugly in soft blankets. They carefully placed the little boy into Rosalind’s arms before handing the baby girl to Rowan.
He looked down at the tiny bundle in his hands before turning to Rosalind with the faintest trace of panic on his face. "Am I holding her properly?"
Under different circumstances, Rosalind would have burst into laughter at the sight of him looking so uncertain. "Support her head," she said gently. "Like this."
She demonstrated with the little boy in her arms, and Rowan watched closely before carefully adjusting his hold. His movements became slower and more confident as he cradled the baby’s head.
Neither of the babies had opened their eyes yet. Their tiny fingers remained curled into little fists, and their small feet were tucked safely beneath the blankets.
Rosalind lowered her gaze to her boy resting peacefully in her arms before looking over at her girl nestled against Rowan’s chest. It was difficult to believe that the two little lives before her had been growing inside her only hours ago.
A warmth spread through her heart.
She hoped she would become the kind of mother they would always feel safe with. She wanted to watch them grow, guide them, protect them, and give them every bit of love she possessed.
As her eyes drifted back to Rowan, she paused.
"...Are you about to cry?" she asked quietly.
Rowan blinked before giving a small, embarrassed smile.
"I’m sorry," he murmured, his brows drawing together. "I don’t know why it’s so difficult to keep my emotions under control today."
"No," Rosalind replied softly. "Don’t apologize."
She watched as he quickly brushed away the single tear that escaped before anyone else could notice. It happened so quickly that no one in the room paid it any attention, and the others respectfully gave the couple the privacy to enjoy their first moments with their children.
"They’re just..." Rowan began before his voice caught in his throat. He looked down at the little girl sleeping peacefully in his arms before lifting his eyes to Rosalind again. "They’re beautiful."
His gaze softened even more. "Thank you."
Rosalind’s lips curved into a gentle smile.
"I don’t think I’ll ever be able to repay what you’ve given me today," Rowan continued. "Just know that whatever you wish for, whatever you want, I’ll spend the rest of my life trying to give it to you."
"They’re our children, Rowan," Rosalind replied softly. "I know exactly what you’re feeling, and hearing you say that is more than enough for me."
Rowan let out a slow breath as he looked from his wife to the two tiny babies. "What a wonderful family we’re going to become"
"That’s right," Rosalind murmured as she looked lovingly at the children in their arms. After another quiet moment, Rowan leaned down to kiss the little girl on her forehead while Rosalind did the same with their son.
Not long afterward, the rest of the family quietly gathered around them.
Queen Catarina stepped beside her daughter’s bed and looked at the two babies with misty eyes before turning to Rosalind.
"I already know they’re going to grow up surrounded by love," she said softly. "They couldn’t have asked for better parents."
Rosalind looked up at her mother and smiled, feeling another wave of gratitude wash over her. Catarina gently caressed her daughter’s cheeks, unable to hide the emotion shining in her own eyes.
"Look how many aunts you already have, little ones," Verity said fondly as she accepted one of the babies into her arms.
Rebecca and Hannah each had their turn holding the twins as well, admiring every tiny feature.
"But as their aunt, I come first," Hannah declared proudly.
The women shared a warm laugh. "I don’t think anyone can argue with that," Verity replied with an amused smile. "After all, you’re Her Majesty’s sister. If anyone has the right to claim first place, it’s you."
