Chapter 285: A Change In The Air

On a gentle morning, Julian sat at the breakfast table while Rebecca served the apple pie. She cut a piece and placed it on his plate before reminding him, "Eat quickly, you have to go to the academy."

She served another portion onto her own plate and had just settled back into her seat when she heard footsteps approaching. Her head turned towards the doorway, and her gaze met Cedric’s as he entered the dining room dressed in formal clothing, clearly prepared to leave for the palace.

Their eyes met, and they exchanged a warm smile before Cedric walked over to her and bent down to press a kiss against her cheek. He then leaned towards Julian and kissed the top of his head before ruffling his hair affectionately.

"I’ll be coming along today because I have to go to the palace. You don’t mind, do you?" he asked the boy.

"Not at all," Julian answered immediately, and Cedric smiled at him before taking his own seat at the table. Rebecca reached for the pie and served a portion onto his plate as well.

"Smells good," Cedric said softly as he looked down at it.

"It tastes even better," Julian added between bites as he continued eating his own piece.

"Of course it would. She made it," Cedric replied, and Rebecca could not help but chuckle at their little conversation.

She took her own seat and began eating slowly, listening to the quiet conversation between them while occasionally glancing at Cedric.

It had only been a week since their marriage, yet things in their lives were already beginning to change. The first few days had passed almost too quickly, filled with moments that Rebecca knew she would remember for a long time.

They had spent time exploring Silverkeep, shared meals together, and allowed Julian to become more familiar with the castle. There had been laughter, conversations, and beautiful moments between her and Cedric, and with every passing day, she found herself becoming more comfortable with the life they had chosen.

Julian would also be returning to his studies now that the week was over. Her marriage to Cedric had not interrupted his education; if anything, it had opened another opportunity for him.

As the son of the Lord Commander, Julian could now attend the Royal Academy, a prestigious institution where the children of the kingdom’s most prominent families received their education. It was a place Rebecca had heard of before, although she had never imagined that her own son would one day be among its students.

His Majesty had also ensured that Julian would not have to struggle with the journey to and from the academy. A carriage had been arranged to collect him from Silverkeep every morning and bring him home after his lessons, which meant Rebecca would not have to worry about him travelling alone or being away from home for too long.

Cedric, meanwhile, would also be returning to his duties. He had been away from them for the past week because of the wedding and their arrival at Silverkeep, but his responsibilities as Lord Commander could not be put aside forever.

Rebecca knew that his return to duty meant their quiet days together would soon become fewer, and although she understood that his work was important, she could not deny that she would miss having him around. Still, she held tightly to the precious memories of the week that had just passed.

It had been a beautiful week, not because anything extraordinary had happened every day, but because she had experienced what it felt like to have a home and a family of her own.

"Mother?" Julian’s voice pulled her out of her thoughts, and Rebecca blinked before turning towards him. "The carriage is here already," he said.

She looked towards the window and noticed the royal carriage coming to a slow stop.

Julian had stood from his seat and now held his briefcase in one hand. "Come here" Rebecca said when Julian turned to leave, and he approached her, "I just want to..." Rebecca’s voice trailed off as she straightened his uniform.

"It’s alright mother" Julian said now, "I’m going to be late"

Rebecca gave him a pointed look and before she could say anything, "It’s not a good idea to be late on the first day" He muttered.

Cedric’s lips curled, "Well that’s a good habit to have" And he rose from his seat at the same time while the servants began clearing the table.

Having adjusted his clothes and making sure Julian was ready, they walked together towards the entrance of the castle, where the carriage was waiting and the coachman had stepped down from his seat.

Julian was dressed in his academy uniform and held his briefcase in one hand as the coachman approached him. "Young Master Julian?" he asked.

"That is me," Julian responded, and the man bowed before opening the carriage door for him.

Julian climbed inside, and the coachman then turned towards Cedric and Rebecca and bowed to them as well before stepping back.

Cedric turned to face Rebecca, and she looked at him with a faint reluctance. "Do you have to go too?" she asked him.

He lifted his hand to tuck a loose strand of hair behind her ear while his other hand found hers and held it gently. "I’m sorry it is like this, Rebecca... But don’t worry, I’ll come back early," he promised.

She sighed before nodding, although the slight sadness on her face remained, and Cedric noticed it immediately. "Please smile. I don’t like seeing you look like that," he said as he leaned closer to her.

Rebecca pressed her lips together at first, but a small smile soon found its way onto her face. "Thank you," he said softly before leaning in to kiss her lips. He lingered there for a moment before pulling back with a smile. "I should go now," he said, and she raised a small hand to wave at him.

Cedric went to join Julian inside the carriage, and the two of them waved at Rebecca before the carriage finally turned away and began leaving the castle. Rebecca remained there for a moment, watching them disappear from sight before she slowly turned back towards the entrance.

The carriage ride was smooth, and Cedric eventually turned his attention towards Julian, who was sitting opposite him with his briefcase resting beside him. "Are you excited for your first day at the academy?" he asked.

Julian’s shoulders dropped almost immediately. "School isn’t exactly exciting," Julian complained.

"We spend most of the day sitting in lessons, and when we finally get a break, it’s over before we can even have any fun. Then it’s straight back to class until it’s time to go home."

Rather than becoming annoyed by Julian’s response, Cedric’s lips curled into an amused smile, and a soft laugh escaped him. Rebecca, however, would have reacted very differently.
