Aren's first sect mission involved collecting mushrooms.
Tavian was delighted.
"Adventure," he said, holding up the assignment slip. "Danger. Glory. Fungus."
Nara Quill snatched the paper from him.
"Glasscap mushrooms are worth eight contribution points per basket. Stop complaining."
Nara was a small woman with copper-brown skin, tightly braided hair, and the permanent expression of someone disappointed by everyone else's intelligence. She had met Aren after Tavian accidentally set their shared washbasin on fire using an alchemical warming stone.
Aren liked her immediately.
The three of them stood at the edge of Briar Hollow, two hours east of Mount Ardent.
Outer disciples needed contribution points for better techniques, medicines, private training rooms, and library access.
Aren needed library access.
Therefore mushrooms mattered.
"Where do they grow?" he asked.
Nara pointed downhill.
"Under dead ironwood near Essence pools."
"And what eats them?"
Tavian grinned. "You learn fast."
Glasscaps were guarded by razorbacks.
Razorbacks resembled boars except normal boars did not have crystal spines capable of launching from their bodies like arrows.
Aren learned this when one spine passed through the sleeve of his coat.
"You could have mentioned that!"
Tavian raised a stone shield as three more spines shattered against it.
"I assumed the name gave it away!"
Nara threw a vial.
Green smoke exploded across the clearing.
The razorback squealed and charged blindly.
Aren stepped aside, swept its forelegs with the spear, and drove the point beneath its jaw.
The Codex appeared.
[QUALIFYING KILL.]
[RAZORBACK]
Recordable trait: Spine Projection - Uncommon
Aren dismissed it.
He had one Imprint slot left.
Throwing bones from his back did not seem worth it.
The prompt remained for five seconds before fading.
Tavian noticed Aren staring at the dead razorback.
"You want the spines?"
"No."
"Good. I was worried."
Nara crouched beside the corpse and removed one intact quill with pliers.
"Formation workshops buy these."
Tavian looked betrayed. "So the monster throws money from its back."
"Approximately."
They harvested the useful parts instead of leaving everything for scavengers.
Aren had never understood how much of cultivation was logistics.
Stories focused on cores and legendary weapons. Actual sects needed glue, tendon thread, toxin glands, hide, bone, lamp oil, and thousands of common materials that kept workshops running.
The Codex identified each.
Most were not worth Devouring.
That taught Aren another lesson: value depended on purpose.
A razorback spine was poor Origin and excellent formation stock.
Aren carried six back to the collection site.
The mission supervisor looked at the kill marks.
"Three disciples killed five?"
Tavian nodded. "Mostly him."
Aren pointed at Nara. "Her field trapped two."
Nara pointed at Tavian. "He punched one."
The supervisor stared at Tavian.
"Why?"
"It was nearby."
The man decided not to ask more.
They received nine contribution tokens each.
Then the ground trembled.
Not a razorback.
Deeper.
Aren put his palm to stone.
Grave Sense mapped a heavy four-legged movement below the ridge.
The supervisor went pale.
"Shardtusk."
Aren looked at the forest.
The mission had just stopped being about mushrooms and common loot.
Tavian killed the second creature by punching it.
Aren stared.
The large disciple's fists were covered in brown Essence.
The impact sounded like a dropped boulder.
"What?" Tavian asked.
"Nothing."
"You have the look."
"What look?"
"The one people get the first time they see a proper Stonebody technique."
Nara stepped around the carcass. "He's wondering whether your skull is also made of rock."
"It is. Very high quality rock."
Aren laughed.
The sound surprised him.
It had been a long time since friendship had arrived without history attached.
They collected two baskets before Grave Sense warned Aren.
Many feet.
Fast.
He stood.
"Something's coming."
Tavian listened. "I don't hear anything."
"South. Twenty paces. More than five."
Nara immediately corked her vials.
If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.
"How do you know?"
Aren did not answer.
The brush erupted.
Six razorbacks charged.
Behind them came a larger beast covered in red crystal plates.
Nara swore.
"Shardtusk."
The mission slip had explicitly warned candidates to avoid Shardtusks.
The Codex analyzed.
[SHARDTUSK ALPHA]
Classification: Elite Beast
Ascendant equivalence: Resonant
Threat: High
"Run," Aren said.
Tavian planted his feet. "We can take it."
"The six others?"
"We can take some of it."
Nara kicked his ankle.
They ran.
The hollow became chaos.
Spines hissed through trees. Aren heard them through Grave Sense before impact and shouted directions.
"Left!"
Tavian moved.
A crystal spike punched through the trunk beside his head.
"How are you doing that?"
"Later!"
The Shardtusk gained on them.
The beast did not merely run.
It used the terrain.
Every time its crystal plates brushed an ironwood trunk, red light flashed through the bark. The next stride came faster.
The Codex reacted.
[BEAST TRAIT OBSERVED: IMPACT CHARGE]
[Acceleration increases after successful collision with dense material.]
Aren looked ahead.
Briar Hollow was almost entirely dense material.
"Stop letting it hit trees!"
Tavian glanced back. "I was not aware we were granting permission!"
Nara pointed toward a shallow ravine. "There! Rock walls. Narrow enough to trap it."
They changed direction.
The Shardtusk followed.
Aren listened through Grave Sense while running. The six lesser razorbacks had spread into two groups. Herd behavior. They were not pursuing randomly.
They were driving the three disciples toward the Alpha.
"They're herding us."
Nara swore. "Shardtusks don't coordinate razorbacks."
"This one does."
The Codex highlighted a faint pulse running from the Alpha's plates into the ground.
[Command vibration detected.]
Aren almost smiled.
A creature using the earth to communicate while hunting someone with Grave Sense.
For once, the world had been considerate.
He slammed the spear butt into the ground twice.
A crude imitation of the Alpha's pulse.
The nearest razorback group turned early.
Tavian looked at him. "Did you just lie to pigs?"
"Apparently."
"I am proud of you."
The false command bought them five seconds.
Enough to reach the ravine.
Nara threw two glass vials against the rock as they entered. Blue paste spread across the walls.
"What is that?" Aren asked.
"Slip resin."
"Will it slow the Shardtusk?"
"No."
Aren looked at her.
"Then-"
"It will prevent it using the walls for Impact Charge."
The Alpha entered the ravine.
One shoulder struck the blue resin.
Its hoof slid.
The massive beast crashed sideways, losing speed.
Tavian roared and hit it with Stonebody fists.
The impact cracked one red plate.
The Shardtusk turned on him.
Aren moved before it could gore his friend.
Predator's Step launched him across the ravine.
He hit the creature behind the jaw with the spear shaft instead of the point.
The strike barely damaged it.
It changed the target.
The tusks came for Aren.
Good.
He retreated.
The Alpha followed.
Nara shouted, "Aren, the cracked plate!"
He saw it.
Tavian had opened a seam on the beast's shoulder.
Not a killing point.
A place Nara's chemistry could reach.
"Can you poison it?"
"Not through that armor."
"Through the crack?"
Her eyes sharpened.
"Maybe."
Aren gave her the only answer that mattered.
"Do it."
He attacked the Alpha alone.
Not to kill.
To make it turn.
Predator's Step. Thrust. Retreat.
The spear scraped crystal.
The beast charged.
Aren crossed left.
The second Step tore pain through his thigh.
He ignored it.
The Shardtusk followed.
Exactly as he wanted.
Its cracked shoulder rotated toward Nara.
She threw.
A needle-thin vial struck the seam and shattered.
Black liquid disappeared beneath the plate.
The Alpha screamed.
Its command vibration broke.
Every remaining razorback in the hollow scattered.
The Codex chimed.
[ELITE COORDINATION DISRUPTED.]
[Team tactical condition achieved.]
The Shardtusk's red plates brightened almost white.
Nara's face changed.
"That is not supposed to happen."
Aren gripped the spear.
"I hear that frequently."
The beast entered a frenzy.
That was when the original plan became survival.
Aren could outrun it with Predator's Step.
Tavian could not.
Nara definitely could not.
The path narrowed between two ironwood roots.
Aren saw an opportunity.
"Keep going."
Tavian looked back. "No."
"I'm faster."
"That is not the same as bulletproof!"
"Trust me."
Nara grabbed Tavian's sleeve.
"Move!"
They passed the roots.
Aren turned.
The Shardtusk charged.
Its crystal plates glowed red.
Predator's Step.
Aren accelerated directly toward it.
The beast lowered its tusks.
At the last moment Aren stepped again.
Pain tore through his right leg.
The second consecutive use exceeded safe strain.
But he crossed sideways.
The Shardtusk missed.
Its full weight hit the narrow root gap.
The beast became wedged for half a second.
Aren stabbed behind its foreleg.
The spearpoint barely penetrated.
The Shardtusk screamed and twisted.
Aren was thrown.
He hit the ground and rolled.
The beast tore free.
Its red crystal plates flared.
Dozens of spines launched.
Aren used Predator's Step again.
His leg failed.
He stumbled.
A spine cut across his ribs.
[IMPRINT STRAIN: CRITICAL]
The Shardtusk charged.
Tavian came from the side.
He hit the beast with both fists.
Brown Essence exploded.
The Shardtusk's head snapped sideways.
Nara threw a black vial into its open mouth.
"Down!"
Aren dropped.
The beast's mouth erupted in green fire.
It screamed.
Aren saw the wounded joint beneath its foreleg.
He pushed himself up and thrust.
The broken spear entered the same wound.
Silver veins flashed.
The point penetrated to the heart.
The Shardtusk collapsed.
The remaining razorbacks fled.
Aren fell to one knee.
Tavian grabbed him.
"Still alive?"
"Unfortunately."
"Good. I'd hate to explain this to orientation staff."
Nara crouched beside Aren's leg.
"You tore something."
"I know."
"I have a salve."
"Use it."
The Codex simultaneously offered restoration.
Aren declined.
Let Nara's medicine work.
He needed to stop treating Origin as a solution to every wound.
While his friends argued over bandages, the Codex chimed.
[FASTER OPPONENT DEFEATED: CONDITION COMPLETE.]
[PREDATOR'S STEP successful executions: 101/100.]
[COMPATIBLE MOVEMENT CATALYST DETECTED: SHARDTUSK ACCELERATION CORE.]
[Evolution conditions complete.]
EVOLVE PREDATOR'S STEP?
Cost: 12 Origin + catalyst
Aren stared at the dead beast.
"I need the core," he said.
Nara looked up. "For what?"
"Experiment."
"Those words terrify me when spoken by men with no alchemy training."
They extracted a red crystal from beneath the beast's sternum.
Aren waited until they returned to sect grounds and he was alone behind the dormitory.
He held the core.
"Evolve."
The crystal dissolved.
Origin ignited through his legs.
He nearly collapsed.
The Imprint changed.
[PREDATOR'S STEP has evolved.]
Pain vanished from the Imprint.
Not all physical strain.
The hesitation inside movement.
Aren felt a new possibility open between one direction and the next.
Predator's Step had been a line.
Hunter's Step was a decision that could change its mind once.
The Codex displayed an additional notification.
[EVOLUTION QUALITY: EXCELLENT]
[Conditions contributing:]
- 100+ successful executions
- defeat of faster opponent
- compatible acceleration catalyst
- tactical use under team conditions
[Future evolution conditions: HIDDEN]
Aren reread the final line.
"Naturally."
He looked at the remaining Shardtusk crystal fragments Nara had wrapped in cloth.
"Any value?"
She glanced over. "The core was the valuable part. Plates can be sold to the crafting hall. Why?"
The Codex had already analyzed them.
[SHARDTUSK PLATE - UNCOMMON MATERIAL]
[Compatible with: movement bracing / impact resistance]
Aren dismissed the display.
"Contribution points."
Nara nodded approvingly. "Finally, a healthy obsession."
The three of them sold the plates the following morning.
Aren used his share to purchase two things.
Access to the second-floor history collection.
And a new pair of boots.
Tavian inspected the boots with solemn respect.
"Now you may join civilization."
Aren looked at the repaired hole in his old pair.
"These survived Ruin 47-K."
"They are heroes. Retire them."
Aren stored the old boots beneath his bed.
He told himself it was practicality.
Not sentiment.
The Codex did not comment.
He appreciated that too.
[HUNTER'S STEP - EPIC]
Active Imprint
Explosive multidirectional acceleration.
May redirect once during execution.
Reduced physical strain.
Aren read the description twice.
Epic.
The first real evolution.
He tested it.
One step.
Direction changed in the middle of movement as naturally as thought.
Aren landed behind the training post he had aimed at.
The world seemed slow for a heartbeat.
Then a voice said, "So that's how."
Aren turned.
Seris Aurel stood beneath the eaves.
The Shardtusk mission should have ended when they returned to Mount Ardent.
Instead it followed them home in pieces.
Nara sold two intact plates to the formation workshop. Tavian turned one broken tusk into a drinking cup before being informed that the residual vibration made liquids foam violently.
He kept it anyway.
Aren brought the Acceleration Core to Maelin.
She did not touch it.
"What do you want me to tell you?"
"Whether using it is stupid."
"Usually."
"Specificity would help."
Maelin examined the crystal.
"Cultivation catalysts accelerate what is already occurring. If your movement Imprint is developing toward redirection, this may help. If it is developing toward something else, it may force the wrong branch."
The Codex opened Evolve.
[PREDATOR'S STEP - RARE]
Condition met: 100+ successful applications
Condition met: defeat superior acceleration predator
Catalyst available: Shardtusk Acceleration Core
Evolution candidates:
HUNTER'S STEP - EPIC
BURST PURSUIT - RARE+
ECHO DODGE - RARE+
Aren focused on Hunter's Step.
[HUNTER'S STEP]
Adds multidirectional redirection and target-relative path correction. Reduces commitment penalty during movement.
"Cost?"
[Catalyst consumed. Origin cost: 0.8.]
Aren had little Origin.
The expenditure was not trivial.
"Show failure probability."
[4%.]
"Consequences?"
[Temporary mobility impairment likely. Permanent damage unlikely.]
Maelin watched his face.
"Your inheritance giving options?"
"Three."
"Which do you want?"
"Hunter's Step."
"Why?"
Aren thought of the Shardtusk using acceleration like a promise: once it committed, everything in front of it became prey.
Then he thought of the moment it could not turn.
"Because speed is less useful than changing my mind."
Maelin smiled.
"Good answer."
Aren approved.
The core shattered.
Pain did not come from muscle.
It came from expectation.
Predator's Step had always chosen a line. Even when Aren changed direction, the Imprint understood movement as pursuit geometry.
Hunter's Step broke the line itself.
For several seconds Aren felt as if every direction existed equally beneath his feet.
Then the world returned.
[EVOLUTION COMPLETE.]
[HUNTER'S STEP - EPIC]
[Integration quality: excellent.]
He tested once.
Forward.
Left.
Backward without resetting.
The movement was not teleportation.
It simply made commitment feel optional.
Aren stopped before excitement became carelessness.
"Cooldown?"
[No fixed cooldown. Strain accumulates according to acceleration, redirection severity, Vessel integrity, and technique frequency.]
"So I can overuse it."
[Yes.]
"Good."
Maelin raised an eyebrow.
"Good?"
"Limits I can feel are better than limits I discover by dying."
He spent the next hour mapping strain.
Five moderate redirections: comfortable.
Eight: calves tight.
Twelve: hip pain.
Fifteen: the Codex recommended stopping.
Aren stopped at fourteen.
That restraint was harder than the technique.
When he looked up, Seris Aurel stood beneath the eaves.
She had watched everything.
