Master Pell touched the carved date with trembling fingers.
"This is impossible."
No one told him he had said that several times already.
Aren stood very still.
Eleven years.
The year his father had returned from the northern expedition.
The year he began waking in the night and checking every window.
The year he started saying the sky was a cage.
The year the Imperial Observatory accused him of treason.
Halric faced Aren.
"Private collections?"
Aren said nothing.
"That message was carved during your father's final year," Pell whispered.
Deren looked between them. "His father?"
Halric's jaw tightened. "Darius Vael."
Recognition spread across Deren's face.
"The traitor?"
Lys struck him hard enough across the mouth to split his lip.
"Not now."
Deren stared at her, stunned.
Aren barely noticed.
He walked to the wall.
The cuts were narrow and uneven. Whoever had carved them possessed a blade but not much time.
At the bottom, almost hidden beneath the date, was another mark.
Three short lines crossed by one diagonal stroke.
Aren knew it.
His father used it in the margins of his field notes to mean danger not understood.
"He was here," Aren said.
Pell lowered his voice. "It appears so."
"Why wasn't this ruin in his trial record?"
No one answered.
A scratching noise came from behind the sealed door.
Halric turned.
"Questions later. Movement now."
They advanced.
The new corridor was narrower and rougher than the entrance passage. Here the walls showed damage: long grooves, impact craters, places where black stone had melted and cooled like wax.
Aren imagined his father walking the same path.
Had Darius been alone?
Had he escaped?
What had followed him out?
The corridor split.
Three passages.
Pell lifted his lamp toward the inscriptions above each.
Aren translated.
"Memory. Flesh. Name."
Deren wiped blood from his mouth. "Which one?"
"None sound inviting," Cale said.
Hessa closed her eyes and extended a cautious thread of Essence. "The left passage is... warmer. Maybe alive."
"Memory," Pell said. "Libraries perhaps."
"Or things that eat memories," Lys replied.
Halric looked at Aren.
"Your father leave arrows?"
Aren searched the walls.
Nothing.
Then he noticed the floor.
Scratches near the center passage.
Three lines crossed by a diagonal.
Danger not understood.
Near the right passage, a tiny triangle.
Darius's mark for route verified.
Aren pointed right.
"Name."
They entered.
The passage called Name narrowed until they had to move single file.
That made everyone quieter.
Aren walked behind Lys. Pell followed him. Cale remained close enough that Aren could hear the healer's controlled breathing. Halric stayed near the rear with Deren and Jorn.
Every fifty paces the walls changed.
At first there were only names carved in the old script.
Thousands of them.
Then the names became sentences.
Aren read fragments as they passed.
I WAS HERE.
I REFUSED.
THEY TOOK MY BROTHER'S NAME FIRST.
DO NOT SPEAK TO THE WITNESS.
One line had been cut so deeply that whoever wrote it must have destroyed the tool doing so.
HEAVEN CANNOT OWN WHAT IT CANNOT NAME.
Aren stopped.
Lys almost walked into him.
"Problem?"
"Maybe."
"Useful answer."
Pell squeezed past and read over Aren's shoulder.
His face changed.
"This is theological sedition."
Deren called from behind them, "Can theology be seditious if everyone who wrote it is dead?"
Pell turned. "Ideas are notoriously inconsiderate about dying with their authors."
Halric pointed forward. "Continue."
They found a side chamber containing twelve stone mirrors.
No one wanted to enter.
The corridor behind them began filling with a fine black mist.
That settled the vote.
Inside, each mirror reflected a different person.
Aren saw himself as a child.
Seven years old. Small hand pressed to the resonance crystal. Eyes swollen from crying.
He stepped back.
The reflection did not.
Across the room Lys stared at a younger woman wearing the same face but different armor. Halric's mirror showed a battlefield. Deren's showed an older man in noble robes. Pell's contained shelves burning beneath blue fire.
Jorn began praying.
This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.
"Do not speak names," Aren said immediately.
No one argued.
The child in Aren's mirror lifted one hand.
His lips moved.
Aren could not hear through the stone.
He did not need to.
Why can't I feel it?
The memory was exact.
Then Darius appeared behind the boy.
There is nothing wrong with you.
The mirror version of Aren turned.
Darius did not look at him.
He looked through the glass.
At twenty-year-old Aren.
Aren's heart stopped.
His father's reflection raised one finger to his lips.
Silence.
Then he pointed down.
Aren looked at the base of the mirror.
A tiny field mark had been scratched into the frame.
Three lines crossed by a diagonal.
Danger not understood.
"Everyone away from the mirrors," Aren said.
Halric reacted to the tone, not the explanation.
"Center. Now."
They moved.
Deren was half a step late.
The older man in his reflection reached through the glass.
A hand seized Deren's wrist.
He shouted.
The mirror surface became liquid.
Something pulled.
Lys grabbed the back of Deren's coat. Halric caught Lys. Hessa and Cale joined them.
Aren saw the reflected man's mouth moving.
Deren Saye.
The words had no sound.
The mirror did not need sound.
Deren's name appeared across its surface in red script.
The room changed.
Every other mirror turned toward him.
Not physically.
Their reflections did.
Twelve different scenes. Twelve different people.
All of them looked at Deren.
"Cut him loose!" Aren shouted.
Deren's sleeve disappeared into the glass to the elbow.
Hessa drew a blade.
"His arm?"
"The mirror!"
She struck the frame.
Nothing.
Halric's sword ignited.
Aren saw the red name again.
Not painted on the glass.
Connected to Deren by a hair-thin thread of light.
"The name," he said.
Pell understood first.
"Erase it."
Aren grabbed a loose stone from the floor and smashed it across the red letters.
The first strike did nothing.
The second cracked the mirror.
The third broke the final letter of Saye.
Deren flew backward into Lys.
The reflected hand vanished.
Every mirror screamed.
The sound came from inside Aren's teeth.
Cracks spread through all twelve surfaces.
Halric drew his sword.
"Move."
The exit had opened.
They ran.
Behind them the mirrors shattered.
Not outward.
Inward.
The black mist flooding the previous corridor vanished with them.
Deren stumbled against the wall and stared at his wrist.
Five pale finger marks circled it.
For once, he had nothing clever to say.
Aren crouched beside him.
"Can you move your hand?"
Deren flexed his fingers.
"Yes."
"Then you're fortunate."
"You saved me."
Aren looked up.
"Lys saved you. Halric saved Lys. Hessa hit the mirror. Pell figured out the name."
"You broke it."
"We all did something."
Deren studied him as if that answer was harder to understand than the ruin.
"Why?"
Aren frowned. "Why what?"
"You don't like me."
"I don't need to like you to prefer you alive."
Lys snorted. "Don't encourage him. Near death makes nobles sentimental."
Deren looked at Aren's hands.
"You are bleeding."
The stone shard had opened his palm.
Aren wiped it on his coat.
"I'm used to disappointing blood."
They continued.
Ten minutes later Deren moved beside Aren instead of behind him.
He did not apologize for calling Darius a traitor.
Aren did not expect him to.
But when they reached the blank tablet room, Deren was the first person to ask Aren what he thought before touching anything.
That small change made what happened afterward worse.
Because by the time they found the bodies, Aren had begun thinking all eight of them might actually leave together.
For an hour nothing happened.
That made it worse.
The passage turned, descended, widened, then narrowed again. The air smelled faintly metallic. Every so often Aren caught movement at the edge of his lamp and found nothing when he looked.
Jorn began whispering prayers.
They found a room containing hundreds of stone tablets.
Each was blank.
Pell nearly cried from frustration.
They found another room filled with rusted weapons placed neatly on shelves. Lys examined a sword and watched it collapse into red dust in her hands.
Then they found the bodies.
Dozens.
Some wore armor styles Aren recognized from three different historical periods. Others wore materials he had never seen. Several skeletons had four arms. One had a skull shaped like an elongated crown.
All of them had died facing the same door.
And all of their skulls had been opened.
Cale knelt beside the nearest human corpse.
"Cut?"
"No," Halric said.
He pointed.
The bone had been pushed outward.
Something had emerged from inside.
The lamps flickered.
Aren heard the scratching again.
This time it came from the room.
"Captain," he said.
A skull turned.
Not much.
Just enough.
Then every corpse moved.
The first creature tore itself from a rib cage in a spray of ancient dust.
It was the size of a hound, pale and jointed, with six narrow limbs and a head that looked unfinished. No eyes. A circular mouth lined with black teeth.
Lys's spear took it through the chest.
Blue Essence exploded.
The creature folded around the shaft and kept moving.
"Head!" Aren shouted.
Lys changed grip and slammed the spear butt beneath its jaw. Hessa's blade flashed.
The creature's skull split.
It dropped.
The other bodies ruptured.
Halric roared, "Formation!"
Cultivators moved.
Aren had seen trained fighters before. He had never stood inside the violence.
Essence turned humans into disasters.
Halric's sword released golden arcs that sheared creatures apart. Lys became a blur of spearpoints. Deren threw sheets of flame across the floor while Hessa moved through them untouched, cutting anything that escaped.
For several breaths Aren believed they would win easily.
Then the creatures began speaking.
"Halric."
The captain froze.
One of the eyeless things crouched on the wall.
Its mouth opened.
"Halric Venn."
The voice belonged to a woman.
Halric went white.
Another creature whispered, "Deren."
Another: "Lys Marek."
Jorn screamed, "Don't answer!"
The warning on the wall.
Do not let it learn your name.
Aren grabbed Pell's sleeve. "Don't speak to them."
The creatures swarmed.
Jorn was first.
One dropped from the ceiling onto his shoulders. He tore it away, but a second clamped onto his arm. A third landed against his back.
"Help me!"
Halric turned.
Jorn's body jerked.
His eyes rolled upward.
A bulge moved beneath the skin of his neck.
Cale lunged toward him.
Jorn exploded.
The room became blood.
A pale thing unfolded from the ruin of his chest, larger than the others.
It spoke with Jorn's voice.
"Cale Merrow."
The healer stopped.
It smiled without lips.
Chaos followed.
Aren pulled Pell behind a stone table as Essence detonated through the chamber.
Something hit the table hard enough to crack it.
Pell clutched Aren's coat.
"The door!"
Across the room, the exit stood fifteen paces away.
Hessa reached it first.
The door opened before she touched it.
Darkness waited beyond.
Hessa skidded to a stop.
A hand came out.
Long.
Pale.
Human-shaped except for the number of joints.
It seized her face.
She never screamed.
The darkness pulled her through.
The door closed.
Halric shouted her name.
Every creature in the chamber repeated it.
"Hessa Tor."
"Hessa Tor."
"Hessa Tor."
Aren understood then.
Not mimicry.
Collection.
They were learning them.
"Stop saying names!" he shouted.
Deren blasted a creature apart. "What?"
"They react to names! Don't say anyone's name!"
Halric heard him.
"You!" the captain barked, pointing at Deren. "Burn the corpses. Spear, left. Healer, with the scholars."
They stopped using names.
It helped.
For perhaps a minute.
Then the larger creature wearing Jorn's voice turned its eyeless head toward Aren.
"Aren."
His blood froze.
Pell whispered, "No."
The creature tilted its head.
"Aren Vael."
Every other creature stopped moving.
Silence dropped over the room.
Halric stared at Aren.
The creatures began to tremble.
Not with hunger.
With fear.
One backed away.
Another flattened itself against the wall.
The thing with Jorn's voice made a wet clicking sound.
Then all of them shrieked at once.
"UNWRITTEN!"
The black stone answered.
A bell rang.
The floor opened.
Aren fell.
Pell's fingers caught his wrist for half a second.
Then someone struck the scholar from behind.
Aren dropped into darkness.
He landed on a sloping surface and rolled.
Stone tore skin from his palms. His shoulder struck a ridge. The world spun.
He slid downward for what felt like an eternity before being thrown onto flat ground.
His lamp shattered.
Darkness.
Above, distant shouts echoed through the shaft.
Then a scream.
Then another.
Aren tried to stand.
His left ankle folded beneath him.
He bit down on a cry.
Something moved nearby.
He drew Tessa's dagger.
"Who's there?"
No answer.
Fool. Names.
He shut his mouth.
A faint blue glow appeared ahead.
A doorway.
Aren limped toward it.
Behind him, claws scraped stone.
He moved faster.
The doorway opened into a circular chamber.
At its center stood a stone chair.
Someone sat in it.
A man.
Or what remained of one.
Black armor covered a body long since reduced to dust. A spear lay across its knees, broken in two places. Chains ran from the armor into the walls.
Above the chair floated a sphere of darkness.
Not shadow.
Absence.
A hole in reality.
Aren stumbled inside.
The door sealed behind him.
The scraping stopped.
For several seconds he heard only his own breathing.
Then the armored corpse raised its head.
Aren's dagger nearly slipped from his hand.
Two points of white light ignited behind the helm.
A voice filled the chamber.
"Name."
Aren remembered the warning.
He said nothing.
The corpse waited.
"NAME."
The chains tightened.
Aren backed away.
The black sphere above the throne pulsed.
Pain tore through his skull.
Images flashed.
Stars chained together.
Worlds enclosed in glass.
Nine thrones burning above an ocean of kneeling souls.
A spear driven through the heart of something vast enough to eclipse a sun.
A man standing alone before a door made of light.
Then Aren saw his father.
Darius Vael stood in this exact room.
Younger. Bleeding.
His hand pressed against the armored corpse's helm.
"Not him," Darius said.
The vision vanished.
Aren collapsed to one knee.
The corpse stared at him.
"Name," it repeated, quieter now.
Aren tasted blood.
"No."
The white lights brightened.
"GOOD."
The sphere overhead opened.
Aren understood, too late, that it was an eye.
Something looked through it.
Something impossibly far away.
The armored corpse moved.
One chained hand seized the broken spear.
It pointed the jagged weapon at Aren's chest.
"RUN."
The door behind Aren exploded inward.
The pale creatures poured through.
The corpse rose.
Its chains snapped taut.
The chamber became white fire.
Aren was thrown across the floor.
His head struck stone.
He could not hear.
Could barely see.
The armored figure fought like the memory of a god.
Every motion destroyed something. The broken spear punched through three creatures at once. A kick shattered the floor. White fire consumed the walls.
But the chains held.
More creatures came.
And something larger moved behind them.
The hand from beneath the bridge.
The armored corpse looked at Aren.
For one impossible instant, Aren felt sorrow from it.
Then the giant hand tore the figure apart.
The chamber collapsed.
Aren crawled.
A stone beam fell across his legs.
He screamed.
The pale creatures died around him beneath falling rock.
One dragged itself closer.
Its mouth opened.
"Aren Vael."
He stabbed it.
Once.
Twice.
Again.
The dagger snapped.
The creature bit into his side.
Aren struck it with the broken hilt until his arm stopped working.
Eventually it stopped moving.
So did he.
Dust settled.
The giant hand withdrew into darkness.
Aren lay beneath stone, bleeding from too many places to count.
He thought of Tessa.
Of his mother.
Of his father's face beneath the rain.
He wondered whether the others were alive.
He knew they weren't.
His breath became shallow.
Cold spread upward from his fingers.
The black sphere above the shattered throne descended.
It floated over him.
Aren wanted to laugh.
After twenty years of being ignored by Heaven, something had finally noticed him.
His vision faded.
Words appeared in the dark.
[UNKNOWN CONSCIOUSNESS DETECTED.]
Aren blinked.
The words remained.
[SCANNING.]
[CULTIVATION IMPRINT: NONE.]
[HEAVENLY REGISTRATION: NONE.]
[SOUL AUTHORITY: UNWRITTEN.]
A pause.
[IMPOSSIBLE.]
Another pause.
[RECHECKING.]
Aren's heart beat once.
Twice.
Then the darkness spoke.
[SUCCESSOR FOUND.]
[INITIALIZING SOVEREIGN CODEX.]
