Aren learned three things about becoming a cultivator in the next ten minutes.
The first was that strength arrived faster than judgment.
He discovered this by trying to pick up the broken spear with one hand, overestimating his new body, and swinging the weapon hard enough to smash its butt into the wall.
The impact cracked stone.
Aren stared at the fracture.
"I did that."
[CONFIRMED.]
The second thing was that pain did not disappear simply because he had become stronger.
His palms were raw, his ribs ached, and the new pathways inside him throbbed as if someone had threaded hot wire through his bones.
The third was that the Codex was extremely willing to let him make mistakes.
"You could warn me before I break something."
[HOST ACTIONS ARE NOT UNDER CODEX CONTROL.]
"Comforting."
A vibration passed through the floor.
Grave Sense caught it before his ears did.
Three creatures.
No - four.
Aren tightened his grip on the spear.
He still had no idea how to fight.
Strength did not change that.
Lys Marek had spent years learning how to make a spear an extension of her body. Aren had spent years carrying crates and avoiding tavern brawls because losing teeth was expensive.
The first Grave Wretch appeared in the broken doorway.
Aren jabbed.
Too early.
The spearpoint struck stone.
The creature sprang sideways, skittered along the wall, and launched itself at his shoulder.
Aren twisted.
Claws tore his coat.
He drove an elbow backward and felt something crack.
The wretch hit the ground.
A second came low.
Grave Sense warned him through his boots.
Aren stepped aside and swept the spear shaft down.
The creature's skull struck the floor.
He stabbed.
Black fluid splashed.
[QUALIFYING KILL.]
He ignored the message.
The third and fourth came together.
Aren retreated into the throne chamber where rubble narrowed the approach. One creature leapt. He braced the spear and let momentum kill it.
The last hesitated.
That frightened him more than mindless aggression.
It crouched in the doorway and clicked.
"Aren Vael."
Aren felt the name vibrate through the floor.
Then the creature ran.
Away.
He could have let it go.
Every instinct told him not to chase monsters through an ancient ruin.
The Codex pulsed.
[OBSERVED BEHAVIOR DEVIATION.]
[ENTITY ATTEMPTING COMMUNICATION WITH HIGHER-ORDER HOSTILE.]
Aren swore and followed.
The corridor beyond split around collapsed stone. Grave Sense turned the darkness into a crude map beneath his feet: the fleeing creature, debris, distant movement.
He ran faster than he ever had.
The Sovereign Vessel responded with unnerving eagerness. His legs drove him forward in long, controlled strides. Air tore past his face. He nearly missed the turn because his body could accelerate more quickly than his mind expected.
The wretch disappeared through a crack.
Aren struck before it could squeeze through.
The spearpoint punched between its shoulders.
The creature shrieked.
Aren did not pull the spear free immediately.
The Wretch twisted hard enough to wrench his shoulder. He let go, stepped back, and watched it claw at the shaft buried between its shoulders.
The broken weapon moved with the creature.
That gave him an idea.
Grave Sense caught the thing's weight through the spear butt every time it struck stone.
Weapon and monster had become one vibration source.
Aren grabbed the shaft only when the creature committed to turning left, then used its own movement to slam its head into the wall.
Once.
Twice.
The Wretch stopped.
[QUALIFYING KILL.]
[Record candidate: WALL-CLING - COMMON.]
Aren stared at the prompt.
Useful in ruins.
Potentially useful everywhere.
His capacity was limited.
"Show adaptation cost."
[Requires modification to finger flexors, foot tendons, and dermal grip structures. Moderate Origin integration cost.]
"Decline."
The prompt vanished.
That became his first deliberate lesson in scarcity.
Record did not mean collect.
It meant choose.
He Devoured the corpse instead.
Black residue rose from it like smoke pulled backward.
[+1.3 Origin]
A small object remained where the creature's sternum had been.
Not manifested spoil exactly. A hard natural plate, black as old bone.
[GRAVE PLATE - COMMON MATERIAL]
[Low value. High resistance to decay.]
Aren almost left it.
Then he remembered Pell's field kit and the fact that common materials were still materials.
He pocketed the plate.
Power had already changed the way the ruin looked.
Before the Codex, a corpse was danger or grief.
Now it could also become a menu.
Aren disliked that enough to set another rule.
"Do not automatically display extraction prompts while I am looking at a dead human."
[Directive accepted.]
"Monsters are fine."
[Define monster.]
Aren stopped.
That was not a simple question.
If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
"Non-sapient hostile entities, for now. If classification is uncertain, ask."
[Directive accepted.]
The Wretch at his feet had spoken his name.
Was it sapient?
Or repeating stolen language?
Uncertain.
The Codex had let him extract it already.
Aren crouched, suddenly uncomfortable.
"Was that thing sapient?"
[No stable self-model detected. Mimic cognition only.]
Relief came too quickly.
He did not want to become someone who needed the answer to be convenient.
The corridor ahead trembled.
The higher-order hostile had heard the Wretch's scream.
Aren retrieved Worldspine and moved.
From somewhere beyond the wall came an answering sound.
Deeper.
Larger.
Aren yanked the spear free.
[QUALIFYING KILL.]
[RECORD OPPORTUNITY DETECTED.]
[Existing Imprint: GRAVE SENSE]
[Additional Recordable Trait: NAME MIMICRY]
Aren stared at the choice.
"No."
The prompt vanished.
He had no interest in speaking with someone else's voice.
The Codex did not object.
That, more than anything, reassured him.
He crouched beside the corpse.
"Devour."
Black motes rose.
[ORIGIN ACQUIRED: 1.8]
He repeated the process with the other bodies.
[ORIGIN TOTAL: 6.4]
Aren could feel the resource now.
The strange reservoir did not feel full when Origin increased.
It felt possible.
That distinction bothered Aren.
Essence, according to every beginner's text he had ever read, existed as energy. Cultivators gathered it, refined it, stored it. Origin behaved less like fuel and more like permission for reality to become something else.
Aren focused on Grave Sense.
[GRAVE SENSE - COMMON]
[Development options available.]
He selected the Imprint.
[Increase range: 2.0 Origin]
[Increase resolution: 2.0 Origin]
[Improve biological discrimination: 4.0 Origin]
[Evolution: CONDITIONS INCOMPLETE]
He had 6.4.
Enough to become more capable.
Also enough to make a mistake he did not understand.
"What happens if I spend Origin improving an Imprint?"
[The Imprint changes.]
"Permanently?"
[YES.]
"Can it become worse?"
A pause.
[YES.]
Aren smiled without humor.
"There it is."
He dismissed the menu.
The Codex did not make choices safe merely because it offered them.
That knowledge felt more valuable than two extra paces of vibration sense.
He continued through the ruin until Grave Sense caught movement beneath the floor.
Not approaching.
Circling.
Aren stopped in a chamber filled with waist-high pillars.
The stone between them looked ordinary.
The vibration below did not.
Three Grave Wretches moved through narrow cavities under the floor, following him.
They had learned not to approach directly.
"Good," Aren whispered.
If they could learn, so could he.
He stepped onto the central path and deliberately dragged the spear butt across stone.
The vibration changed.
One wretch accelerated beneath him.
Aren waited until Grave Sense showed the pressure directly below his left foot.
Then he jumped.
Black stone burst upward.
The creature emerged mouth-first.
Aren was already turning in the air.
The broken spear came down through its skull.
He landed badly, one knee striking stone, but the kill was clean.
The other two did not attack.
They fled beneath the floor.
Aren frowned.
"They're adapting."
[CONFIRMED.]
"Is that normal?"
[INSUFFICIENT COMPARATIVE DATA.]
"Everything about you is extremely helpful except the parts that matter."
He Devoured the body.
[ORIGIN ACQUIRED: 1.6]
A thin object remained inside the collapsed dust.
Aren picked it up.
A translucent claw no longer than his thumb.
[MANIFESTED SPOIL]
[GRAVE CLAW - COMMON MATERIAL]
[Uses: minor vibration focus / alchemical catalyst / imprint development]
The words MANIFESTED SPOIL held his attention.
"You made this?"
[INACCURATE.]
"Then where did it come from?"
[Defeated entity contained compatible metaphysical pattern. Codex interaction stabilized residue into usable form.]
Aren stared at the claw.
So monsters could leave more than corpses.
Useful remnants. Condensed traits.
Rewards.
The idea should have felt exciting.
Instead Aren thought of Pell bleeding somewhere in the ruin and how easily a person could begin seeing every threat as a collection of things worth taking.
He put the claw away.
"No farming," he said.
[TERM UNCLEAR.]
"Never mind."
The hall of statues waited ahead.
Before entering, Aren practiced one thrust.
Rear foot drove. Front hand guided. The mechanics were guesses assembled from watching Lys.
The spearpoint stopped where he intended.
He tried again.
Worse.
Again.
Better.
He made himself repeat the motion twenty times.
The Codex eventually responded.
[WEAPON FAMILIARITY DETECTED: SPEAR]
[Status: NOVICE]
Aren looked at the word.
"Seventeen out of one hundred?"
[REFERENCE UNCLEAR.]
"Something tells me I'll hear a number like that eventually."
He entered the statue hall.
The mouths covered in stone bands made immediate sense now.
Names were dangerous here.
Speech itself might be dangerous.
Aren moved slowly enough to read every title.
Some he recognized from no historical record. Others carried concepts that should not exist in language.
THE MAN WHO STOOD OUTSIDE CAUSE.
SHE WHO REMEMBERED TOMORROW.
THE LAST DAUGHTER OF A WORLD WITHOUT SKY.
The final one made him stop.
THE SOVEREIGN WHO REFUSED ASCENSION.
The statue above that title had been destroyed.
Not weathered.
Destroyed deliberately, struck again and again until even the shape of its feet had nearly vanished.
Darius's tiny arrow had been scratched beside it.
Aren's pulse accelerated.
His father had not simply passed through this place.
He had been following the same trail.
Not physically. Origin existed in the same impossible place as his new pathways: adjacent to flesh, hidden beneath reality. A reservoir of potential waiting for instruction.
"Can I make myself stronger?"
[YES.]
The answer came with options.
[VESSEL REINFORCEMENT]
[BIOLOGICAL RESTORATION]
[IMPRINT DEVELOPMENT]
[CODEX EXPANSION - LOCKED]
Aren focused on the first.
Cost scaled upward quickly.
He dismissed it.
"Not yet."
There were too many things he did not understand.
He examined the spear instead.
"Analyze."
The Codex flickered.
[ITEM ANALYSIS FAILED.]
Aren frowned. "Why?"
[CLASSIFICATION EXCEEDS CURRENT AUTHORITY.]
[PARTIAL DATA AVAILABLE.]
BROKEN WEAPON
Name: Unavailable
Origin: Unavailable
Material: Unknown
Integrity: 4.1%
Classification: ERROR
Aren looked at the battered shaft.
"Four percent?"
The weapon was cracked in three places. Its upper blade had snapped, leaving an asymmetrical point only a handspan long. Silver lines ran beneath the black surface like veins under skin.
He remembered the armored figure wielding it.
One strike had destroyed creatures that nearly killed experienced cultivators.
"Can it be repaired?"
[UNKNOWN.]
"Can it hurt whatever is hunting me?"
[LIKELY.]
"Good enough."
He moved on.
The ruin no longer felt silent.
With Grave Sense active, Aren became aware of small vibrations everywhere. Crawling things inside the walls. Water moving far below. Occasional impacts so distant he could not guess their source.
And, behind him, a slow repetitive tremor.
Something was following.
Not the Grave Wretches.
Too heavy.
Aren quickened his pace.
The corridor opened into a hall lined with statues.
There were hundreds.
Humans. Beastfolk. Winged figures. Creatures with faces made of flame. All knelt toward a central path.
Every statue had its mouth covered by a stone band.
Aren lifted the spear.
"Of course."
Nothing moved.
He walked between them.
The Codex highlighted inscriptions beneath several figures.
Names.
Not personal names. Titles.
KEEPER OF THE THIRD GATE.
THE WOMAN WHO BURIED A MOON.
LAST KING OF SARATH.
CHILD OF THE RED STAR.
Aren stopped.
The empire had no record of any Sarath. No known civilization had ever buried a moon.
The final statue at the end of the hall was broken.
Only its feet remained.
The inscription beneath it had been violently chiseled away.
Aren crouched.
His father had scratched something into the base.
A tiny arrow.
He followed it to a seam behind the pedestal.
The black stone panel opened when he pressed it.
Inside lay a leather tube.
Aren forgot to breathe.
The leather was cracked but recognizable.
Darius Vael had owned six document cases.
Aren knew each one because as a child he had been forbidden to touch all of them.
This was the smallest.
He pulled it free.
The cap resisted, then opened with a dry pop.
Inside was a single sheet of treated vellum.
No writing.
Aren turned it over.
Blank.
"Really?"
The Codex stirred.
[HIDDEN METAPHYSICAL SCRIPT DETECTED.]
[RECORD?]
Aren's pulse jumped.
"Yes."
The vellum vanished from ordinary sight.
In its place, lines of pale text appeared in the Codex interface.
Not a recorded ability.
A message.
AREn -
IF YOU FOUND THIS, THEN I FAILED TO KEEP YOU AWAY.
Aren's knees weakened.
His father's handwriting.
He sat against the pedestal.
The message continued.
DO NOT TRUST THE OBSERVATORY.
DO NOT TRUST ANYONE WHO SPEAKS OF THE NINE AS THOUGH THEY ARE MERELY GODS.
THE RUIN IS NOT A TOMB.
IT IS A LOCK.
AND YOU ARE NOT THE KEY.
Aren read the final line twice.
YOU ARE WHAT THEY LOCKED AWAY.
The message ended.
"Father?"
Nothing answered.
Aren pressed fingers against his eyes.
For eleven years he had imagined explanations.
Darius had discovered a conspiracy. Darius had found some forbidden artifact. Darius had truly lost his mind. Elara had fled because the Empire hunted anyone connected to him.
He had never imagined himself at the center of it.
You are what they locked away.
A deep impact shook the hall.
Every statue trembled.
Aren stood.
Grave Sense pulsed.
The heavy presence following him had reached the far corridor.
One step.
Pause.
Another.
Stone cracked beneath its weight.
Aren gripped the broken spear.
"How far to an exit?"
[UNKNOWN.]
"Can you map the ruin?"
[CURRENT AUTHORITY INSUFFICIENT.]
"Can you tell me anything useful?"
The Codex paused.
[YES.]
Aren waited.
[RUN.]
He almost laughed.
Then the far wall exploded.
Before the wall came apart, Aren had eight minutes in the statue chamber.
He used seven badly.
The first minute went to the document case.
Darius's handwriting made the dead feel close enough to interrupt.
DO NOT TRUST THE OBSERVATORY.
THE RUIN IS NOT A TOMB. IT IS A LOCK.
AND YOU ARE NOT THE KEY.
YOU ARE WHAT THEY LOCKED AWAY.
Aren read the last sentence until the words became shapes.
"Locked away where?"
The Codex did not answer.
"Am I the thing?"
[Query lacks sufficient referent.]
"Am I what the ruin was built to contain?"
[Insufficient data.]
"Do you know?"
A longer pause.
[Access restricted by Codex rank.]
That answer was worse than ignorance.
It meant the System possessed information and had chosen hierarchy over explanation.
Aren's anger sharpened.
"Show me what I am allowed to know about Record."
The interface changed.
[RECORD]
Qualifying conditions may include:
- personal defeat contribution
- extended observation
- voluntary transfer
- authority interaction
Recorded structures may include:
- biological traits
- learned patterns
- metaphysical imprints
- law fragments
Limitations:
- compatibility
- capacity
- host integrity
- Codex rank
- unknown
"Unknown is not a limitation. It's an admission."
[Correct.]
Aren stared.
At least it could admit uncertainty.
"Can Record change me against my will?"
[No Record integrates without host authorization except emergency preservation protocols already accepted during succession.]
"Can Devour?"
[Devour converts compatible external structure into Origin or authorized integration. Host approval required except emergency preservation protocols.]
"Can Evolve?"
[Host approval required.]
Aren breathed slowly.
Three authorities.
Three permissions.
He could work with that.
"Record directive: every permanent integration requires explicit confirmation."
[Directive accepted.]
"Every sapient being requires separate confirmation even if I've approved similar cases."
[Directive accepted.]
"And if I'm unconscious?"
[Emergency preservation may expend existing Origin and activate previously authorized functions. New sapient extraction prohibited without prior explicit order.]
Good.
Aren had not known Pell would die.
He had not yet faced the question directly.
Some part of him was already preparing for it.
The second through sixth minutes went to the statues.
Each represented a figure with the face deliberately removed. Some held spears. Others books. One held nothing except an open hand.
Titles appeared when Aren approached.
THE FIRST WHO REFUSED.
THE KING WITHOUT HEAVEN.
SHE WHO KEPT HER NAME.
THE LAST DOOR.
No dates.
No explanation.
The final statue was broken at the waist.
Its plaque had been smashed, but the Codex reconstructed three letters from the remaining grooves.
SOV---
Aren looked at the blacked-out fourth authority in his interface.
"Related?"
[Restricted.]
"I am beginning to dislike that word."
[Preference recorded.]
Minute seven went to the weapon.
The broken spear rested across his knees.
[Unknown legacy weapon.]
Integrity: 4.1%
Classification: ERROR
Origin: restricted
[Record attempt unavailable.]
"Can Evolve repair it?"
[No.]
The answer came instantly.
"Why?"
[Evolve modifies structures under Sovereign authority. Weapon authority not established.]
Aren frowned.
"It isn't mine?"
[Possession does not equal authority.]
Something about that sentence lodged in him.
He did not have time to examine it.
In minute eight, Grave Sense registered a pressure behind the far wall.
Not footsteps.
A single enormous contact.
The Codex displayed one word.
[RUN.]
He almost laughed.
Then the far wall exploded.
A hand pushed through the stone.
Pale.
Enormous.
The same hand that had climbed from beneath the bridge.
Aren ran.
