The Codex chose breakfast to become more complicated. Aren sat on the roof of an abandoned Spear Hall storage building with a bowl of rice in one hand and Worldspine across his knees. Below him, Mount Ardent endured divine bureaucracy. Church examiners had placed white markers at every location touched by the previous day's observation. Templars stood at stair crossings. Priests questioned disciples who had been beneath the mountain during the Anchor event. Aren had spent the morning being unavailable.
Veil Thread helped.
So did Tavian.
"He went that way," Tavian had told two templars while pointing in opposite directions with both hands.
Awakening changed the Scartrace Compass.
For three hours after Aren stabilized, the device refused to activate. Then black-gold light passed through the damaged housing.
[Host designation interaction detected.]
[Legacy tool synchronization available.]
Aren frowned.
"Cost?"
[No Origin.]
"That is suspicious."
The Compass clicked open.
Inside the casing sat the old Route Pin fragment Seris had recovered after the Mount Ardent Break.
The pin was technically spent.
Its positional memory was not.
Aren inserted it.
[SCARTRACE COMPASS.]
[Base functions:]
- detect active Worldscar distortion within local threshold
- compare scar direction against registered mundane geography
- store one temporary geometry trace
[Trace capacity: 1.]
Aren stared.
The Codex had not created the function. It had helped two pieces of old loot understand each other.
That distinction mattered.
Nara turned the Compass over.
"Can it identify grade?"
"Not yet."
"Can it detect monsters?"
"No."
"Can it make tea?"
"No."
Tavian sighed.
"Early-stage legendary equipment is disappointing."
"Rarely legendary."
"Spiritually legendary."
Aren put the Compass away.
A tool that told him when geography was lying felt sufficient.
Neither had appreciated the technique.
Aren took another bite.
The Codex appeared.
[SOVEREIGN CODEX]
Host: Aren Vael
Designation: Unwritten
Codex Rank: Awakening
Ascendant Path: Sovereign Vessel - Stable
Equivalent Realm: Vessel
Origin: 0.9 Imprints:
GRAVE SENSE - Common
HUNTER'S STEP - Epic
VEIL THREAD - Rare
Capacity: 3/4
Title:
THE UNWRITTEN
Aren stopped chewing.
"Four."
[CONFIRMED.]
"You could have mentioned that yesterday."
[HOST PRIORITY: survival / legacy playback / divine observation.]
"Reasonable. I dislike it."
The interface shifted.
[AWAKENING RANK FUNCTIONS:]
- Imprint capacity increased.
- Evolution Matrix access expanded.
- Archive Index: partial.
- Ascendant divergence analysis available.
The last line brightened.
Aren set down the bowl.
"Show me."
A diagram unfolded.
A human silhouette appeared on the left, traced in white-gold lines.
[STANDARD ASCENDANT PATH]
Vessel -> Resonant -> Wellspring -> Starheart -> Soulbound -> Dominion -> Sovereign -> World Emperor -> Deathless -> Divine
A second silhouette appeared.
Black-gold.
The first stage glowed.
[SOVEREIGN PATH]
Sovereign Vessel -> ??? -> ??? -> ???
The rest disappeared into darkness.
"Helpful."
[HOST HAS NOT CREATED SUBSEQUENT STAGES.]
Aren frowned.
"Created?"
[STANDARD PATH ADVANCES THROUGH HEAVENLY MANDATE COMPATIBILITY.]
[HOST COMPATIBILITY: NONE.]
[CODEX MAY ADAPT OBSERVED STRUCTURES.]
[CODEX MAY NOT DEFINE SOVEREIGN AUTHORITY ON HOST'S BEHALF.]
Aren read that twice.
"You made the Vessel."
[EMERGENCY FOUNDATION.]
"So make the next one."
[NEGATIVE.]
"Why?"
[RESONANCE REQUIRES EXTERNAL OR INTERNAL REFERENCE.]
[STANDARD CULTIVATORS RESONATE WITH A MANDATE-RECOGNIZED ASPECT OF REALITY.]
[Examples: flame / stone / blade / life / storm / bloodline / concept.]
[HOST IS UNREGISTERED. EXTERNAL REFERENCE CANNOT AUTHORIZE ADVANCEMENT.]
"And internal?"
The Codex paused.
[DEFINE FIRST PRINCIPLE.]
Aren stared at the words.
"What is a First Principle?"
[THAT WHICH HOST WILL NOT ALLOW EXTERNAL AUTHORITY TO DEFINE.]
That sounded less like cultivation and more like an argument waiting to happen.
"Examples?"
[UNAVAILABLE.]
"Because you don't know?"
[BECAUSE EXAMPLE WOULD CONTAMINATE CHOICE.]
Aren leaned back on his hands. For once, the Codex's refusal made sense. A Sovereign whose foundation had been selected from a menu was a contradiction.
He looked across Mount Ardent.
Thousands of cultivators practiced on terraces cut into the mountain. Every technique represented a relationship with something outside the self.
Stone answered Tavian.
Alchemy answered Nara through reactions and ratios. Seris's golden sword Essence resonated with a bloodline art refined through generations. Maelin's spear path was so deeply rooted in force and distance that Aren sometimes felt the courtyard itself straighten when she trained.
What did Aren resonate with?
Nothing.
That had been his curse.
Now it was apparently homework.
Footsteps crossed the roof tiles behind him. Grave Sense identified the rhythm before the shadow reached him.
Seris sat beside his bowl.
"You're hiding."
"Meditating."
"With rice."
"Advanced technique."
She stole a piece of pickled radish.
Aren stared.
"That was mine."
"You have no proof."
"I watched you take it."
"Unreliable witness."
He moved the bowl farther away.
Seris smiled.
The cut on her cheek from the Observatory assault had already become a pale line.
"Lucan is asking for you."
"I'm flattered."
"He has asked three times."
"Less flattering."
She looked at Worldspine.
"Maelin says the spear is worse."
Aren ran his thumb across one of the black fractures.
[WORLDSPINE]
Classification: Restricted
Integrity: 3.8%
Observed functions:
- unknown
- unknown
- MANDATE SEVERANCE: involuntary / unstable
[WARNING: repetition may destroy weapon and host.]
"The Codex agrees."
Seris glanced at him.
"It warned you?"
"Yes."
"That is reassuring."
"My father told me not to mistake aligned purpose for kindness."
"Also reassuring."
They sat quietly.
Aren liked silence with Seris.
Most people filled it because they feared what might appear if they did not. Seris seemed willing to let silence remain itself. Eventually she said, "My father sent a letter."
Aren looked over.
Her expression had changed.
"House Aurel?"
"He wants me in Vhal Teren for the Seven Pillars Conclave."
"When?"
"Ten days."
"The sect is under divine audit."
"The edict prevents named subjects from leaving Argent territory. The Conclave occurs under Imperial and Church covenant. Participants can be transferred under seal."
Aren understood.
"He wants you away from me."
Seris looked at him.
"He wants his heir away from an event that caused nine divine bells to ring."
"That sounds more diplomatic."
"My father is excellent at diplomacy when telling people to leave dangerous things alone."
Unauthorized usage: this tale is on Amazon without the author's consent. Report any sightings.
"Will you?"
She took another radish.
"No."
"Seris."
"Don't start."
"I was going to say your father has a point."
"Worse."
Aren smiled.
She leaned back.
"What were you actually doing up here?"
He hesitated.
Then told her.
Not everything.
Enough.
The next stage.
The First Principle.
The fact that the Codex could not choose it.
Seris listened without interrupting.
When he finished, she said, "Good."
Aren frowned.
"Good?"
"I was beginning to worry your impossible relic would solve every problem for you."
"It throws me at problems and offers observations afterward."
"That sounds healthier."
He looked toward the training terraces.
"What would yours be?"
"My First Principle?"
"If you needed one."
Seris considered.
"I don't know."
"Very helpful."
"You asked a difficult question."
She was quiet for several breaths.
"Maybe choice."
Aren turned.
Seris watched the white Church banners below.
"Everyone in my family knew what I would become before I could read. Sword. House heir. Wellspring by twenty. Marriage useful to the bloodline. Children useful after that. None of those things are necessarily bad. That's what makes cages complicated."
Aren remembered her words in the infirmary. You don't get to become another cage because you found out the sky is one.
"Choice," he said.
"Maybe. But that's mine."
She looked at him.
"Don't steal it."
"The Codex specifically warned against that."
"Good relic."
Below them, a bell rang once.
A normal bell this time.
Church summons.
Seris stood.
"Lucan's fourth request."
Aren picked up Worldspine.
"Persistent man."
"He's an inquisitor. Persistence is probably embroidered on their underclothes."
Aren nearly dropped the spear.
Seris walked toward the roof edge with complete dignity.
"Did you just make a joke?"
"No witnesses."
"I am literally a witness."
She jumped down.
Aren followed.
They did not go directly to Lucan. Maelin intercepted them halfway down the roofline.
"Courtyard."
Seris sighed. "He summoned Aren."
"He can summon harder."
Maelin led them into a narrow training yard between two storage halls. It had no spectators and, Aren suspected, that was the point.
She planted her spear upright.
"Show me what happens when you cultivate."
Aren looked at Seris.
"Is that a trick question?"
"Most questions are if you answer badly."
Aren sat cross-legged.
He had learned standard breathing patterns from Maelin despite the fact that his body handled Essence differently. He drew a slow breath.
The Sovereign Vessel responded.
Origin was not ambient Essence. It did not pour into him from the air. The reservoir behind reality simply became available, black-gold lines warming through muscle and bone.
Maelin circled him.
"Nothing."
"Encouraging."
"No. Interesting. Seris?"
Seris closed her eyes. Gold light gathered beneath her skin.
"I can feel his body changing. I can't feel energy moving into him."
"Because none is," Aren said.
Maelin tapped his shoulder with the spear shaft.
"Normal Resonance starts before the realm breakthrough. The Vessel learns to answer something. Stone. Flame. Steel. A bloodline. For spear cultivators, sometimes distance itself."
She thrust.
Aren moved instinctively.
The spear stopped against his throat.
"Why did you dodge?"
"Because you tried to stab me."
"Why?"
"I prefer having a throat."
"That preference is closer to cultivation than your jokes."
Aren frowned.
Maelin lowered the weapon.
"A path is not an element. It is a repeated answer. Seris answers conflict by imposing precision. Tavian answers pressure by becoming harder to move. I answer distance by deciding it belongs to the spear."
Seris raised an eyebrow. "That is an alarmingly Maelin sentence."
"I had decades to refine it."
Maelin looked at Aren.
"What do you answer the world with?"
Aren thought of Ruin 47-K.
Run.
Learn.
Survive.
Those were strategies. Not principles.
He thought of Rydan. Of Halvek. Of Lucan's edict. Of every adult who had stood over a powerless child and decided what he was allowed to be. Something moved in the Sovereign Vessel.
The Codex appeared.
[Potential resonance detected.]
Aren's heartbeat accelerated.
Then the sensation vanished.
[INSUFFICIENT CLARITY.]
Maelin watched his expression.
"Close?"
"Annoyingly."
"Good."
"Good?"
"If you had solved your next realm over breakfast, I would have thrown you off the mountain."
Seris nodded. "For educational purposes."
"Exactly."
Aren stood.
The Codex appeared one final time.
[ADVANCEMENT OBJECTIVE CREATED.]
[DEFINE FIRST PRINCIPLE.]
[WARNING: FALSE PRINCIPLE MAY DESTABILIZE SOVEREIGN PATH.]
Aren dismissed it.
For thirteen years, everyone had told him what he lacked. Apparently becoming more than Vessel required answering a harder question. Maelin found him before he could escape into philosophy. She landed on the roof hard enough to crack one tile and tossed him a practice spear.
Aren caught it automatically.
"What did I do?"
"You started thinking instead of training."
"Those can occur together."
"Not the way you do them."
She attacked.
No warning.
Aren barely got the shaft up before iron struck wood. The impact drove him three steps backward.
Hunter's Step fired.
Maelin's spear was already there.
He redirected.
She changed angle before the Imprint finished moving him and hooked his ankle.
Aren hit the roof.
"Your relic makes you dangerous," Maelin said. "Your Imprints make you unpredictable. Neither makes you good. Again."
Aren rolled to his feet.
The next exchange lasted six breaths. The one after that lasted nine. By the seventh bout, his forearms shook. By the tenth, Hunter's Step felt less like a miracle and more like a bad habit Maelin had memorized.
"Stop using it to escape mistakes," she said.
"Mistakes are exactly what I prefer escaping."
"Then you will never learn where they begin."
She attacked low.
Aren started Hunter's Step.
Stopped it.
For one instant panic opened inside him. His body expected the Imprint to solve the distance. Instead he planted his rear foot, shortened his grip, and intercepted Maelin's shaft before the leverage formed.
Wood cracked against iron.
He turned the contact into a thrust.
Maelin slipped aside.
The practice point stopped one finger from her sleeve.
Aren froze.
Maelin looked down.
Then at him.
"Better."
That single word felt more rewarding than most praise he had received in twenty years.
The Codex appeared.
[COMBAT FOUNDATION INSIGHT ACQUIRED.]
[Hunter's Step synchronization improved through non-Imprint movement.]
[Future evolution quality increased.]
No rank.
No free power.
Just evidence that training changed what the Codex would eventually allow him to become. Aren found he liked that more. Maelin rested her spear against one shoulder.
"You asked what the world cannot take from you."
Aren's attention sharpened.
"Seris told you?"
"Seris has better judgment than that. Your face told me."
"I apparently have too many faces."
"You do."
She pointed the spear at his chest.
"Do not answer with a thing. Power can be taken. A weapon can break. A person can die. Even memory can be altered if the Church stories are true."
Aren looked at the practice spear in his hands.
"Then what is left?"
"That is why it is your question."
Maelin attacked again.
This time Aren smiled.
Thinking, apparently, was not an excuse to stop training. Not what he could take from the world. What the world would never be allowed to take from him. The ravine below Spear Hall had eaten eleven practice weapons before Maelin decided it was educational. Aren learned this from Tavian, who was counting the broken shafts piled beside the path.
"Twelve," Tavian corrected as another spear came sailing out of the ravine and embedded itself in a pine tree. "It has now eaten twelve. I admire commitment."
Aren looked at Maelin.
"You brought me here to fight the thing doing that."
"I brought you here to learn why it is doing that. Fighting comes after thinking. Try to preserve the order."
The lower terraces of Mount Ardent had been closed since the Observatory assault. Three formation anchors had cracked, and the damage had pushed several training grounds out of alignment. Most had become inconvenient.
One had become hungry.
The ravine cut through black stone for nearly half a mile. Argent disciples normally used it to practice descending combat against summoned stone constructs. The formations were supposed to produce waist-high targets that shattered after three solid strikes. Instead, something beneath the mountain had crawled into the damaged array and started eating the constructs.
Then it started eating weapons.
Nara crouched beside a groove in the path and touched two fingers to a smear of gray residue.
"Mineral mucus," she said.
Tavian stared at her. "There are combinations of words I do not need."
"You need this one. If it gets on your skin, don't use water."
"Why?"
"It hardens."
Tavian looked at his hands.
"I would like to withdraw from education."
Seris stood at the ravine edge, looking down through drifting mist. She had come because Maelin had asked and stayed because Aren suspected she found his training failures relaxing.
"Three movement traces," she said. "Large. One deeper than the others."
Aren activated Grave Sense.
The world changed.
Stone became vibration. Wind disappeared. Heartbeats returned as soft disturbances through boot soles and rock. Maelin was a controlled pulse behind him. Tavian shifted constantly. Nara's breathing was almost unnaturally even. Below, something scraped along the ravine wall.
Aren followed the vibration.
Not one body.
Three.
The largest moved beneath the floor.
"Three," he said. "Two against the western wall. One underground."
Maelin nodded once.
"The two visible ones are quarry drakes. Vessel-level scavengers. They entered through a broken lower ward. The third is why you're here."
"Realm?"
"Guess."
Aren listened again.
The underground vibration came in intervals. Not footsteps. Pressure changes. Each movement compressed a section of stone before releasing it.
"High Vessel. Maybe early Resonant."
"Better."
Tavian lifted his practice hammer. "And what are we?"
"Bait," Maelin said.
Tavian closed his eyes.
"I walked into that."
Maelin tossed Aren a plain steel spear.
He caught it.
Worldspine remained wrapped across his back. Aren looked down at the weapon in his hands.
"You don't want me using mine."
"I want to know whether you can survive without a relic that argues with heaven."
"Reasonable. Unpleasant, but reasonable."
Maelin pointed down the path.
"You, Tavian, and Seris descend. Nara stays above with me."
Nara raised an eyebrow. "Because I am sensible?"
"Because if one of them gets mineral mucus in a wound, I need someone who knows how not to turn it into a statue."
Tavian sighed. "I preferred sensible."
They descended.
The first quarry drake attacked before the mist reached Aren's waist. It looked like a lizard someone had built out of broken paving stones and then become angry about. Four thick legs. Wedge-shaped skull. Teeth made from translucent mineral. Aren saw it through Grave Sense half a second before it burst from the wall.
Hunter's Step wanted to fire.
He didn't let it.
Maelin's lesson from that morning remained fresh in his bruises. Your Imprints make you unpredictable. Neither makes you good. Aren shortened his grip, pivoted, and let the drake's shoulder pass the spearhead. Then he struck behind the jaw.
Steel skidded.
Too shallow.
The drake whipped its tail.
Tavian's hammer intercepted with a crack that shook dust from the wall.
"Educational!" Tavian shouted.
Seris moved past both of them. Gold Essence formed a blade over her fingers.
One cut.
The drake's front leg separated at the joint. Aren changed angle and drove the spear through the opening beneath its throat.
The creature collapsed.
The Codex appeared.
[QUARRY DRAKE DEFEATED - ASSISTED]
[Origin eligibility reduced by contribution distribution.]
[Origin recovered: 0.3 - routed to immediate combat repair]
Aren blinked.
Tavian noticed. "Reward?"
"Small."
Seris wiped stone dust from her sleeve. "Good. You contributed small."
"Your support remains invaluable."
"I know."
The second drake came from above. This one did not survive long enough for commentary. Aren heard claws strike the wall, stepped toward the attack instead of away, and braced the spear under one arm. Tavian hit its flank in midair. The impact turned the body just enough. Aren's point entered through the mouth. Momentum carried the drake down the shaft.
His shoulder nearly dislocated.
He released the spear, rolled, and came up beside the corpse.
[QUARRY DRAKE DEFEATED]
[Origin recovered: 0.5 - routed to immediate combat repair]
[Material manifestation unavailable: insufficient entity distinction.]
"The Codex insults common monsters now," Aren muttered.
Seris looked at him.
"What?"
"Apparently it was not distinctive enough to deserve loot."
"A harsh critic."
The ground moved.
Not shook.
Moved.
The entire ravine floor dropped six inches. Aren's Grave Sense exploded with pressure.
"Up!"
Hunter's Step fired.
He grabbed Tavian by the collar as black stone erupted beneath them. Seris did not need help. Gold light flashed and she was already against the wall, one hand embedded in a crack. Something enormous surfaced where they had been standing. Its skull resembled a ram's if a ram had been designed by siege engineers. Six horn plates curved around a circular mouth. Its body was covered in overlapping basalt scales polished smooth by stone.
No eyes.
It did not need them.
The Codex opened.
[BASALT DEVOURER]
[Classification: Territorial lithophage]
[Equivalent Realm: RESONANT - unstable]
[Distinction: ELITE]
A second panel appeared.
[Combat analysis available.]
[Observed traits:]
- PRESSURE SENSE
- MOMENTUM SINK
- MINERAL ASSIMILATION Aren stared at the second trait.
The creature charged.
Seris dropped from the wall and cut across its shoulder.
Her gold blade struck.
The light bent.
Not deflected.
Absorbed.
The Devourer's plates darkened where the impact landed.
Then it accelerated.
"It eats force!" Aren shouted.
Tavian, already swinging his hammer, made a complicated expression.
"That seems targeted!"
His hammer hit anyway.
The blow should have cracked a boulder.
The Devourer barely moved.
Its shoulder flashed dark.
Tavian flew backward instead.
Aren caught him badly.
They hit the ground together.
"I have confirmed the theory," Tavian wheezed.
The monster turned.
Aren's mind moved faster than his body.
Momentum Sink.
Every strong impact became fuel.
A spear thrust was concentrated momentum. Maelin had brought him here intentionally.
Of course she had.
The creature charged again.
Aren rolled aside without Hunter's Step. The horn plates missed him by inches and smashed into the ravine wall.
Stone cracked.
The Devourer froze.
Not stunned.
Feeding.
Gray veins spread from the broken wall into its skull.
Mineral Assimilation.
It healed the shallow cut Seris had made.
"We need it away from stone," Aren said.
Tavian looked around the ravine.
"Excellent environment for that plan."
Seris pointed upward.
Three Argent practice bridges crossed the ravine. Wood and rope reinforced with formation wire.
Aren understood.
"Can you get it onto one?"
"Can you make it angry?"
He looked at her.
Seris almost smiled.
"Right."
Aren drew Worldspine.
Maelin had told him not to use it. She had not told him not to show it.
The Devourer reacted immediately.
Its circular mouth opened.
The black spear's broken law irritated something in the creature's senses. Aren backed toward the lower bridge.
"Come on."
The monster charged.
Aren waited.
Too long, according to every instinct he possessed.
Hunter's Step remained ready.
He did not trigger it until the last heartbeat.
The world snapped sideways.
Aren appeared on the bridge.
The Devourer followed.
Wood exploded beneath its front limbs.
The formation wires held.
Barely.
Seris moved.
Not at the monster.
At the anchors.
Two gold cuts severed the left support. Tavian understood half a second later and brought his hammer down on the right.
The bridge dropped.
For the first time, the Basalt Devourer had no stone beneath it. Its Momentum Sink still protected the plates. Its Mineral Assimilation had nothing to reach. Aren landed on a hanging section of rope and saw the vulnerable seam beneath its jaw.
Hunter's Step offered the angle.
He refused.
Not because the Imprint was bad. Because Maelin had built the lesson around exactly this moment. He kicked off the swaying bridge, let gravity provide the movement, reversed his grip, and drove the plain steel spear upward.
No explosive thrust.
No burst of Essence.
Just point placement, body weight, and the creature's own fall.
The spear entered the seam.
The Devourer convulsed.
Its Momentum Sink activated too late because Aren had not supplied the meaningful momentum.
Gravity had.
The distinction apparently mattered.
Seris's blade entered beside the spear.
The skull split.
The creature fell into the ravine mist. Aren caught a rope with one hand. Tavian caught his wrist with both of his.
"I would like," Tavian said through clenched teeth, "one mission where you finish standing on the ground."
"I'll add it to the schedule."
They climbed down to the body.
The Codex had already begun.
[ELITE ENTITY DEFEATED]
[BASALT DEVOURER]
[Contribution: Aren Vael - 51%]
[Origin recovered: 5.4]
[Automatic Awakening stabilization expenditure: 6.2]
[Net liquid Origin change: 0]
Aren's attention sharpened.
[RECORD OPPORTUNITIES DETECTED:]
PRESSURE SENSE - Uncommon
MOMENTUM SINK - Rare
MINERAL ASSIMILATION - Rare
[Imprint capacity: 3/4]
[Select one for Record?]
The answer should have been obvious.
Momentum Sink was powerful.
He had just watched it invalidate Seris's blade and Tavian's hammer. A defensive Imprint could solve one of his largest weaknesses.
Aren almost selected it.
Then stopped.
One slot.
The world contained abilities he had not seen yet. The Codex had been designed to tempt him with every defeated enemy. Filling the last slot because something was useful was not the same as filling it because it belonged in the person he intended to become.
"No Record."
The panel remained.
[Confirm decline of Rare Record opportunity?]
"Yes."
The Codex closed the choices.
Seris watched his expression.
"You refused something."
"Momentum Sink."
Tavian stared at the corpse.
"The thing that made my hammer feel decorative?"
"That one."
"Why?"
Aren looked at Worldspine.
"Because I only have one empty place left."
Maelin's voice came from above.
"Good."
Aren looked up.
She and Nara stood on the ravine edge.
"You were listening?"
"I was evaluating."
"From a safe distance."
"Leadership."
Nara lowered a rope ladder.
Something clicked beneath the Devourer's broken jaw. A black-gold crystal pushed itself out through the split armor.
The Codex appeared again.
[MANIFESTED SPOIL]
[GRAVITIC OSSICLE - Rare catalyst]
[Uses: movement evolution / impact adaptation / weapon tempering]
[Special compatibility detected: HUNTER'S STEP]
Aren picked up the small dark bone. It weighed almost nothing until he moved it quickly. Then it dragged against his fingers like a stone tied to the world.
Tavian whistled.
"Now that feels like loot."
Nara reached them and immediately slapped his hand away from the mineral residue on the corpse.
"Do not lick anything."
"I was not going to lick it."
"You looked curious."
"That is not the same thing."
"For you, statistically, it is."
The Codex added one final line.
[HUNTER'S STEP EVOLUTION CONDITION DISCOVERED:]
[Learn to create advantageous movement without relying on the Imprint.]
[Progress: 23%]
Aren smiled.
The boss had not given him a free technique. It had given him a better question. When they reached the top, Maelin took the plain spear from him. The shaft was bent. The point was chipped. One side had been scored by basalt scales.
She examined it.
"You used Worldspine."
"As bait."
"I noticed."
"You said survive without relying on it."
"And did you?"
Aren looked down at the dead Devourer.
"Mostly."
Maelin handed the bent spear back.
"Keep it."
"Why?"
"So the next time a relic makes you feel impressive, you remember what killed the monster."
Aren looked at the ruined steel point.
Not Worldspine.
Not an Imprint.
A decision.
A good angle.
And friends who had trusted him enough to cut the bridge while he was still standing on it. A Church messenger was waiting at the top of the path.
White robe.
Gold seal.
He bowed to Maelin, then looked at Aren.
"Aren Vael. Inquisitor Orr requests your presence at first bell tomorrow."
Tavian sighed.
"Can we put the monster back?"
Aren pocketed the Gravitic Ossicle.
"No."
He looked toward the white banners above Mount Ardent.
"But apparently we found the next one."
