The Glass March lied about distance. The first time Aren noticed, a black ridge that appeared half a mile away took three hours to reach. The second time, Tavian threw a stone at a mirrored cactus and hit a templar forty paces behind him. After that, everyone stopped throwing things.

"This place is offensive," Nara announced.

The ground stretched beneath them in frozen waves of black and silver glass. Ancient lightning scars webbed the horizon. Pieces of the desert reflected skies that were not overhead. One pool showed stars at noon. Another reflected a red moon Veyra did not possess.

The Codex constantly adjusted.

[LOCAL SPATIAL CONSISTENCY: 82%]

[79%]

[91%]

[WARNING: external law residue detected.]

Aren liked the place more than he should.

The Mandate behaved badly here.

That made the world feel less certain.

Lucan hated it.

Every mile, Church priests stopped to reinforce the convoy's route seals. Golden script evaporated against the glass within minutes.

"Fifth Anchor Event," Cassian said beside Aren.

"Gerran told me."

"The official report says celestial storm."

"Halvek says things knock on the barrier."

Cassian glanced toward Lucan.

"Not loudly."

"Why?"

"Because divine audits develop hearing when convenient."

Aren smiled faintly.

The first monster arrived at dusk. Grave Sense felt six legs tap the glass.

Then another six.

Then dozens.

Aren stopped.

"Movement."

Maelin raised her spear.

The convoy halted instantly.

Lucan's templars formed a shield wall.

Nothing appeared.

Nara looked at Aren.

"Where?"

"Everywhere."

The glass shattered.

Creatures exploded upward.

They resembled mantises sculpted from mirrors. Six limbs. Narrow torsos. Forelegs ending in translucent blades. Their bodies refracted the environment until their outlines vanished when still.

[GLASS MANTIS]

[Realm equivalence: Vessel / Low Resonant]

[Law adaptation: refraction]

The first reached a templar.

His white shield flared gold.

The creature's blade passed through the light and cut steel beneath.

Chaos spread.

Maelin became a line of iron. Three mantises broke apart before Aren completed his first step. Seris's sword painted gold arcs across the dark.

Tavian slammed both hands down.

Stone answered weakly beneath the glass.

He swore.

Then planted himself physically in front of Nara anyway.

Aren smiled.

Lesson learned.

He drew Worldspine.

Hunter's Step.

The first mantis tried to vanish by turning its mirrored body. Grave Sense did not care what light saw.

Aren thrust through the vibration.

The spear entered beneath one forelimb.

[QUALIFYING KILL.]

[ORIGIN: 1.7]

[RECORD OPPORTUNITY: REFRACTION SHELL - Uncommon]

He declined Record.

A second mantis dropped behind him. Veil Thread suppressed the warning of his movement as he turned.

Worldspine cracked its head.

[ORIGIN: 1.5]

Aren moved through the fight.

Not elegantly.

Better than Ruin 47-K.

Maelin's training remained when the Imprints were silent. The Imprints made that training dangerous.

Rear hand drove.

Front guided.

He no longer fought the spear's weight. He let reach become a question enemies answered too late. A mantis blade opened his forearm. Aren used Hunter's Step sideways, redirected behind it, and drove the butt into the joint. Tavian finished it with a rock the size of a chair.

"Administrative lifting," he shouted.

Nara threw a bottle past his ear.

It shattered against another mantis.

Purple foam ate through mirrored armor.

"Less talking."

"Yes, administrator."

Then the March went quiet.

Every mantis stopped.

The surviving creatures flattened themselves against the ground. Aren felt something larger moving beneath the glass.

Lucan said one word.

"Prismback."

The ridge ahead stood up.

What Aren had thought was landscape unfolded into a creature forty feet long. Six massive legs pushed through black glass. Plates along its back reflected the convoy in hundreds of distorted pieces.

Its mouth opened.

A broken circle of teeth.

[PRISMBACK RAVAGER]

[Elite]

[Equivalent Realm: HIGH RESONANT]

[Adaptations: spatial refraction / Mandate resistance / law-eating metabolism]

[Threat: EXTREME]

The Codex added another line.

[HIGH ORIGIN DENSITY.]

Rhea was suddenly beside Aren.

Black mask on.

"Expensive organs."

"You have terrible timing."

"I disagree."

The Ravager charged.

The first impact taught Aren why old expedition reports called Prismbacks siege beasts. The creature did not merely hit the templar shield wall. It changed what counted as straight. Aren saw the Ravager charge from thirty paces away. The next instant its reflection struck from the left, its actual body arrived from the right, and a third version existed long enough to throw a templar through a wagon before becoming glass again.

[SPATIAL REFRACTION FIELD ACTIVE.]

[Warning: visual position reliability 31%.]

Aren closed his eyes.

Grave Sense.

The March returned as vibration.

Too many vibrations.

Every mirrored ridge repeated the creature's footfalls with tiny delays. The Ravager had turned the entire battlefield into an echo chamber.

"Nara! Break reflections!"

"With what?"

Tavian answered by punching the ground. Stone Essence barely responded beneath the fused desert, but his body did. He tore a wagon axle free and slammed it through a black-glass ridge.

Nara understood immediately.

"Everyone! Shatter the small mirrors!"

Templars looked at Lucan.

Lucan looked at Aren.

Then, to Aren's surprise, shouted, "Do it!"

The battlefield changed.

Seris stopped chasing the beast and began destroying reflective planes with precise golden cuts. Maelin drove her spear into the glass and used shockwaves to craze entire sheets. Tavian became enthusiastically destructive. Each broken reflection removed one false heartbeat from Grave Sense.

Nine.

Six.

Three.

One.

Aren opened his eyes.

The real Ravager was already on him. Worldspine caught a mouthful of broken-circle teeth. The creature's law-eating metabolism pulled at the spear.

The Codex flashed.

[AUTHORITY CONSUMPTION CONTEST.]

Worldspine hummed.

The Ravager recoiled as though it had bitten a storm. For a fraction of a second, silver cracks ran through the mirrored armor around its jaw. Rhea shouted from somewhere impossible, "That part! Expensive!"

Aren almost laughed.

Then the Prismback folded distance and tried to crush him with both forelegs.

Lucan raised both hands.

A golden command formed.

Love this story? Find the genuine version on the author's preferred platform and support their work!

"HALT."

The word struck the creature.

For one heartbeat, reality agreed.

Then the Prismback ate the command. Gold letters bent toward its mouth and vanished.

Lucan stared.

Rhea laughed.

"I love this place."

The Ravager hit the shield line.

Templars flew.

Aren moved.

He could not hurt the armor. Worldspine scraped mirrored plates without penetrating. Seris struck the same location with Wellspring power.

A gold crack appeared.

"Again!" she shouted.

Aren understood.

They attacked together.

Seris broke structure.

Aren exploited it.

The second exchange opened a seam.

The third drew silver blood.

The Ravager screamed.

Distance folded.

Aren stepped toward the creature and appeared twenty paces away.

Hunter's Step corrected once.

The March corrected twice.

He crashed through a glass pillar.

[HOST INTEGRITY: 76%]

"I hate this place," he decided.

Grave Sense pulsed through connected glass.

The Ravager's body was confusing.

Its reflected plates created false vibration paths.

But one rhythm remained real.

Heart.

Deep beneath the front plates.

Aren ran back.

"Seris! Left shoulder!"

She trusted him without asking.

Gold Essence gathered into a narrow line.

Her sword struck.

The plate shattered.

Aren used Hunter's Step.

One direction.

Redirect.

Worldspine entered the exposed seam.

The spear hummed.

The creature's law-eating structure touched the weapon's broken Mandate edge. For an instant Aren felt Worldspine remember. A silver line extended from the tip. Not the full impossible weapon from Anchor III.

A fragment.

Enough.

The ghost point pierced the heart.

The Ravager collapsed.

Glass rippled for half a mile.

[MANIFESTED SPOILS:]

[BONUS CONDITION ACHIEVED: TRUE-CORE STRIKE DURING ACTIVE SPATIAL REFRACTION.]

[ADDITIONAL MANIFESTED SPOIL: CROOKED-DISTANCE SHARD - Epic]

A splinter of transparent black material appeared above the corpse. Looking directly at it made Aren's eyes insist it was farther away than his hand knew it to be.

Lysette was not there.

Aren was suddenly grateful.

The Codex analyzed.

[CROOKED-DISTANCE SHARD - Epic spatial-law catalyst]

[Compatible uses: Imprint evolution / formation construction / Sovereign Archive geometry / Worldspine restoration UNKNOWN]

Unlike Origin, this was the sort of reward that created possibilities instead of answering them. Aren stored it carefully before Rhea could claim salvage rights on the basis of being annoying. PRISMBACK HEART - Rare

NULLGLASS CLUSTER - Rare

ECHO LENS - Rare

[RECORD OPPORTUNITIES:]

LAW-SCENT - Rare

REFRACTION SHELL - Uncommon

SPATIAL ANCHOR - Epic Aren stared at the last option.

One Imprint slot remained.

Spatial Anchor.

The ability to resist displacement would have saved him from being thrown across the March.

Useful.

Powerful.

He did not choose immediately.

A habit was becoming a rule. Do not take an ability merely because the Codex offered it after adrenaline. He looked at the Evolution Matrix instead.

UNSEEN THREAD - EPIC

Cost: 18 Origin.

"Evolve Veil Thread."

Black-gold light entered the Imprint.

Pain crossed his skull.

The filaments changed.

Not thicker.

More precise.

[VEIL THREAD has evolved.]

[UNSEEN THREAD - EPIC]

Selective metaphysical concealment.

May suppress chosen relationships between host signature and external observation.

Effectiveness increases where host understands observer's method.

[ORIGIN: 12.7]

Aren activated it.

Rhea's head snapped toward him.

Seris still looked directly at his face.

Lucan looked away.

Then back.

His expression changed.

For a heartbeat, the inquisitor had forgotten why Aren mattered.

Aren released the Imprint.

Lucan went very still.

"What did you just do?"

"Improved my posture."

Rhea laughed so hard she had to lean on a dead monster. Maelin walked over and struck Aren lightly on the head with her spear shaft.

"Do not antagonize the Soulbound inquisitor after a battle."

"Before?"

"Also no."

Nara had already begun cutting into the Prismback.

"If anyone wants the expensive organs, stop talking."

Aren picked up the nullglass cluster.

Worldspine hummed.

The convoy camped beside the Ravager's corpse because moving through the March while exhausted was apparently considered more dangerous than sleeping beside a dead thing that had eaten divine commands.

Aren accepted the argument reluctantly.

Nara turned the carcass into an industry. She assigned templars to remove mirrored plates, ordered Tavian to hold the heart basin level, and threatened three senior priests when they tried to classify the organs as Church salvage.

"The Argent disciple killed it," she said.

Lucan looked at the pieces of his shield line scattered across the glass. "With assistance from approximately twenty people."

"Then approximately twenty people may submit invoices."

"That is not how expedition salvage works."

"It is how mine works."

Maelin sat nearby sharpening her spear and making no attempt to intervene.

Aren examined the manifested spoils.

The Prismback Heart pulsed even outside the body. Under Law-Scent's description—still only an unrecorded option—the organ contained a crude instinct for locating unstable authority. The Echo Lens showed objects as they had been a few seconds earlier. Tavian discovered this by looking through it at Nara, waving, then becoming delighted when the lens showed her ignoring him twice.

"We are keeping this," he said.

"You are not touching it again," Nara replied.

Aren held the nullglass cluster against Worldspine.

The Codex opened.

[NULLGLASS CLUSTER - RARE]

[Restoration potential: 0.08%]

[Consume?]

He hesitated.

Rare nullglass had value beyond the spear. Lysette or the Black Scripture might use it to open margin structures. He had spent much of his life owning almost nothing; feeding expensive relics to a broken weapon still offended an old part of him. Then he remembered the full Worldspine beneath Anchor III. A weapon capable of cutting a Mandate relationship might be the difference between argument and survival the next time a god reached down.

"Consume."

The cluster dissolved.

Silver dust moved through the fractures.

[WORLDSPINE INTEGRITY: 3.91%]

The spear warmed.

Then something strange happened.

For one heartbeat, Aren saw a reflection in the glass beneath his feet.

Not himself.

A black spear standing upright in a field of stars. Around it floated nine enormous broken rings. The image vanished before he could focus.

[ARCHIVE CORRELATION: INSUFFICIENT.]

Aren stared at the glass.

Seris crouched beside him.

"You made the face."

"What face?"

"The one where the Codex tells you something alarming and you consider not telling anyone until it becomes worse."

"That is an unfairly specific face."

"Aren."

He told her.

Seris listened without interrupting.

"Nine broken rings," she repeated. "Anchors?"

"Maybe. Worlds. Gates. The Codex doesn't know—or doesn't want to say."

"And you fed the spear our best nullglass."

"I was hoping you'd focus on the cosmic omen."

"I can be concerned about two things."

Aren looked at the wrapped weapon.

"Gerran said it remembers being complete."

Seris's gaze remained on him rather than the spear.

"Then make sure you remember who you were before it does."

The sentence landed harder than she intended.

Aren nodded.

"I will."

Across camp, Lucan stood alone at the edge of a mirrored pool. Its surface reflected not the inquisitor but nine white towers beneath a sky filled with unfamiliar stars.

He looked away first.

The road to Vhal Teren continued beyond the mirrored horizon. Aren had gained Origin, an evolved Imprint, and a relic catalyst. For once, the dangerous detour had been profitable. That worried him almost as much as when things went badly. They stopped for the night beside a lake that reflected a sky nobody could see. The Glass March did that occasionally. Above the convoy, clouds covered both moons. In the water, stars burned with perfect clarity. Tavian stared down at them while eating cold bread.

"I dislike geography that lies more confidently than people."

Cassian sat across the fire.

"Do not touch the water."

Tavian froze with one boot half extended.

"I was not going to."

"You were absolutely going to," Nara said.

Aren had learned enough about the Glass March to trust warnings immediately.

"Why not?"

Cassian pointed at the reflection.

"Because those aren't our stars."

Seris looked up.

Then down.

The constellations differed.

One contained a long hooked chain of blue lights where Veyra's sky should have held the Crown. Aren felt Worldspine become cold against his back.

The Codex opened.

[Spatial inconsistency detected.]

[External observation vector possible.]

He stood.

The reflected stars went out one by one. Something beneath the surface was passing in front of them.

"Weapons," Aren said.

The lake rose.

Not splashed.

Rose.

A sheet of black water stood vertically and folded into a creature with too many legs. Every surface of it reflected someone else's face. Aren saw himself on one shoulder.

Seris on another.

Lucan Orr across its back.

The Codex identified it.

[MIRROR STALKER]

[Void-adjacent predator]

[Equivalent threat: high RESONANT]

[Distinction: ELITE]

[Warning: predator copies the last completed hostile action observed in reflective surface.]

Seris's gold blade was already moving.

"Wait—"

Too late.

She cut horizontally.

Every mirrored face smiled.

A gold line appeared across the Stalker's forelimb.

It copied the attack.

The same arc of force came back toward the convoy. Seris turned her own technique aside with a second strike, but the collision threw sparks across the shore.

"It copies techniques," Tavian said.

"Completed hostile actions," Aren corrected.

"That distinction sounds worse."

The Stalker watched him.

Hunter's Step became dangerous immediately.

Worldspine worse.

A copied mandate-severing strike was not an experiment Aren wanted performed on anyone nearby. He wrapped the spear and dropped it.

The creature charged.

Aren stepped forward with the plain practice spear Maelin had made him keep.

He thrust halfway.

Stopped.

The Stalker twitched but copied nothing.

Aren smiled.

"It needs completion."

He attacked again.

Feint.

Abort.

Reverse grip.

Abort.

The Stalker's body flickered, reflections trying to resolve actions that never finished.

Seris understood.

She began cutting lines that deliberately missed. Tavian raised his hammer, started a full swing, then let momentum carry him into a clumsy spin without striking.

"I hate fighting intelligently!"

The creature hesitated.

Nara threw a vial.

The Stalker watched it.

The vial hit the ground and burst into white powder.

Not an attack.

The powder coated the creature's mirrored body.

Reflections disappeared beneath chalky residue.

Nara smiled.

"Now it cannot see itself seeing us."

Aren had questions about the grammar.

The Stalker screamed.

Its copied faces vanished.

The body became plain black glass. Cassian shouted, "Core beneath the second joint!"

Aren used Grave Sense.

No heartbeat.

But the Stalker struck the ground hard enough to reveal every limb through vibration. He found the one joint moving differently.

"Left side!"

Tavian committed this time.

The hammer hit.

Black glass cracked.

The creature copied the swing—but without a reflective surface the imitation emerged incomplete, a warped force that shattered its own foreleg.

Seris cut through the opening.

Aren finished with the plain spear.

One thrust.

No relic.

No Imprint.

The core broke.

The Stalker collapsed into water that refused to soak into the ground.

The Codex opened.

[MIRROR STALKER DEFEATED]

[Bonus condition: defeated after disabling mimicry surface.]

[RECORD OPPORTUNITIES:]

REFLECTED MOTION - Rare

HOSTILE ECHO - Epic

VOID GLIDE - Rare Aren's attention stopped on Hostile Echo.

The description appeared.

[HOSTILE ECHO: replicate one completed technique observed within compatibility limits.]

Tavian looked at Aren's face.

"That one is tempting."

"Very."

He imagined copying Seris's blade.

Maelin's spear techniques.

Lucan's authority.

Perhaps even divine attacks.

Then he read the limitation beneath it.

[Replication quality dependent on understanding. Repeated use may substitute imitation for personal development.]

Aren laughed quietly.

The Codex had found an ability designed to make him exactly the thing Maelin was trying to prevent.

"Decline."

[Record opportunity declined.]

A second panel opened.

[MANIFESTED SPOIL]

[MIRROR HEART - Epic catalyst]

[Stores one observed movement pattern without copying its power.]

[Potential uses: combat training / Hunter's Step evolution / formation analysis.]

That was better.

Aren picked up the thumb-sized black crystal. When he turned it toward Seris, a tiny golden silhouette repeated her last footwork pattern inside.

Seris leaned closer.

"It remembers movement."

"Without doing it for me."

"Maelin will approve."

"Unfortunate."

The Codex added:

[HUNTER'S STEP evolution progress: 41%]

Aren stored the Mirror Heart beside the Gravitic Ossicle. Two rewards from enemies that had tried to turn movement against him. Perhaps evolution was less about collecting stronger versions of the same technique and more about proving he understood why he needed it.

The lake flattened.

The false stars returned.

They did not leave the shattered shore immediately.

Lucan wanted a threat report.

Nara wanted samples.

Tavian wanted to know whether the Mirror Stalker had technically counted as one creature or several. The Codex had already closed its reward panels.

Aren preferred that.

The Mirror Heart rested in his palm. Black crystal. Thumb-sized. Inside it, a tiny golden silhouette repeated the final footwork pattern it had observed from Seris.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Not copying her power.

Remembering her movement.

Nara leaned closer.

"That is better than another technique."

Tavian looked offended on behalf of techniques everywhere.

"Explain."

"Because he can study it without the artifact doing the work for him."

Lucan arrived with six templars and stopped beside them.

"You declined Hostile Echo."

Aren looked at him.

"You were watching."

"I have eyes."

"Your profession has made that an aggressive statement."

Lucan ignored him.

"The Record could reproduce completed techniques."

"Within compatibility limits."

"And you refused it."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Aren turned the Mirror Heart between two fingers. The tiny Seris completed the same step again.

"Because it was good at answers."

Lucan waited.

Aren continued.

"It could show me what someone else did. Maybe even let me reproduce it. But the limitation said repeated use could substitute imitation for understanding."

"And this?" Lucan indicated the crystal.

"Shows me enough to learn."

Seris crouched beside him.

"It also shows you that your third opening was bad."

Aren frowned.

"My third opening worked."

"It worked because the creature copied the wrong part."

She took the Mirror Heart.

The golden silhouette reset.

Seris tapped one side of the crystal.

"Watch your position relative to mine."

A second faint shape appeared where Aren had been during the remembered exchange.

His weight had shifted early.

Barely.

Enough that an experienced opponent could predict which direction Hunter's Step would favor.

Aren stared.

Tavian leaned over his shoulder.

"Oh."

Aren looked at him.

"What?"

"Nothing. I enjoy seeing other people discover mistakes."

"Healthy."

"Thank you."

Maelin would have found six worse problems in the same motion.

That was the point.

Aren had survived the fight.

The reward did not need to tell him he had been perfect. He took the Mirror Heart back.

"Useful."

Seris smiled.

"Painful word for you."

Then Nara noticed Seris was favoring her left leg.

"You are injured."

"No."

"That was unconvincing."

"Bruised."

Nara pointed at a rock.

"Sit."

Seris stared at her.

Nara pointed again.

Seris sat.

The bruise along her calf had turned black-gold where reflected Essence had struck the same point repeatedly.

Aren's stomach tightened.

The fight had felt clever when it ended. The injury reminded him clever victories still cost people.

"That was my pattern," he said.

Seris looked at him.

"The monster copied all of us."

"It focused on you because I kept using the same opening."

"And I kept standing in the same response lane."

He started to object.

She cut him off.

"Do not turn teamwork into a new way to blame yourself for everyone's choices."

Nara nodded while applying a cooling paste.

"Medical approval."

Aren exhaled.

Reward windows made victories look clean.

People rarely were.

He looked at the Mirror Heart.

A useful catalyst.

A visible mistake.

A bruise on someone he cared about. All three belonged to the same victory. That made the reward more valuable, not less. Lucan finished his report and looked at the shattered shore.

When the Mirror Stalker finally died, the Scartrace Compass completed its map.

[WORLDSCAR: GLASS MARCH.]

[Grade: III.]

[Depth signatures recorded: 3.]

The first signature belonged to predictive glass packs. The second to the Prismback Ravager's refraction field. The third to the Stalker's hidden mimicry basin.

Rhea stared at the display.

"Three Depths."

Seris wiped glass dust from her sword.

"Do not say secret floor."

Tavian said, "Secret floor." The Codex evaluated the entire run rather than only the last kill.

[GLASS MARCH CLEAR REVIEW.]

[Depth I: cleared.]

[Depth II: elite core defeated.]

[Depth III: mimicry surface disabled before boss defeat.]

[Performance: A.]

[First-clear unavailable: historical expedition evidence detected.]

That last line changed the mood. Someone had entered the deepest layer before them.

Long ago.

The March had not been undiscovered. It had been survived, documented, and then hidden badly enough that modern maps called it wilderness.

Aren stored the signature.

The next time geography lied, he wanted a comparison.

"How am I supposed to explain this?"

Tavian answered for Aren.

"He fought a reflection monster by refusing to finish anything."

Lucan looked at the shattered shore.

"That explanation created more questions."

Aren picked up Worldspine.

"Then the Glass March is working as intended."
