The attack on Mount Ardent began with a bell that rang backward. Nara heard it first. She was in the lower formation hall correcting a relay diagram when the bronze emergency bell outside moved. The clapper did not strike metal. The sound still came. One deep note pulled inward instead of spreading out. Every formation line on Nara's desk went dark. Not failed. Erased. For one impossible second, the ink itself seemed meaningless. Then the lamps died. Someone screamed in the corridor. Nara stood. Her first instinct was Essence. Nothing answered. Her second was panic. Training answered that.
She grabbed the emergency box under the desk. Inside were mundane candles, chalk, rope, two steel wedges, a hand bell, and a printed card every formation student mocked.
WHEN THE NETWORK FAILS, YOU ARE THE NETWORK.
Nara had always considered it melodramatic. She no longer did. The corridor filled with disciples trying to call techniques that did not exist.
"Stop!" Nara shouted.
No one listened. She climbed onto a bench.
"STOP USING ESSENCE!"
That got attention because half of them were terrified by the absence of it.
"Emergency protocol Seven. Physical relays. Pairs. No one moves alone. If you can't reinforce your body, stairs are now stairs again. Remember gravity."
A second-year disciple stared at her.
"Who put you in charge?"
"The person with the emergency box. Help or get out of the way."
Tavian arrived carrying a kitchen cleaver. Nara looked at it.
"Why?"
"I was eating."
"Of course."
"Also everything magical stopped working and I suddenly remembered knives are real."
He had a point. They began moving students toward the lower assembly yard. The first Observatory agent was already inside. He wore Argent gray. That almost worked. Then Tavian saw the boots.
"Those are Imperial."
The man struck. No technique. No Essence. A short baton caught Tavian across the shoulder. Nara swung the emergency box. It hit the agent's face. Not elegant. Effective. Tavian used the cleaver handle against the man's wrist. The baton fell. Three more gray-clad figures appeared at the end of the corridor.
"Run," Nara said.
They did. Without cultivation, the Argent Sect became a different place. Distances grew. Stairs mattered. A fall from a balcony became lethal again. Inner disciples who could normally cross courtyards in a breath found themselves trapped by architecture built for ordinary servants. The Observatory had planned for that. Their teams moved in mundane formations. Shields. Batons. Crossbows. Equipment designed by people who expected power to disappear. Nara understood the horror of it. The null field was not merely a weapon. It was a doctrine. Someone had spent years asking how to arrest gods after turning them human.
"Lower yard is blocked," Tavian said.
They were hidden behind a supply alcove with eleven younger disciples.
"North stairs?"
"Two teams."
"Kitchen passage?"
"One team, but Cook Mara is throwing pans at them."
Nara considered.
"We help Mara."
Tavian looked proud.
"I always said the kitchen was strategic."
They moved through the laundry channel. At the junction, Nara stopped. Something was wrong with the floor. No formation sense. No Essence. Just chalk. A thin black line had been drawn across the stones.
"Don't cross."
Tavian froze.
"Why?"
"Because they expect cultivators to be confused, not blind."
Nara threw a wash bucket across the line. A mechanical bolt fired from the wall and punched through wood. Three younger disciples gasped. Tavian stared at her.
"Marry me."
"No."
"Understood. Terrible timing."
They crawled beneath the trip line. Cook Mara had won her battle. Two Observatory agents lay unconscious among overturned soup pots. Mara was sixty-two years old and had no cultivation worth mentioning even on a normal day. She pointed a ladle at Tavian.
"You owe me for the cleaver."
"We're under attack."
"Inventory survives war."
Nara loved her instantly. They evacuated through the kitchen stores. Above them, something struck the mountain. Dust fell from the ceiling. The null field deepened. Nara felt the absence like pressure in her teeth. Then a voice spoke through every corridor at once.
"Argent Sect. This is Director Halvek of the Imperial Observatory. Remain where you are. No harm will come to compliant persons. We are executing a lawful retrieval order for Aren Vael."
Tavian stopped. Nara did too. One of the younger disciples whispered, "They're here for him?" Fear changed shape in the group. That was exactly what the announcement was designed to do. Make Aren the cause. Make surrender sound like safety. Nara looked at the students.
"They disabled an entire sect before asking him to come quietly. Decide what that tells you."
The youngest swallowed. No one moved away. Good. They reached the lower refuge. Sect elders were organizing mundane defenses. Injured disciples arrived in waves. Some wounds came from falls. Others from Observatory weapons. Tavian looked around.
"Where's Aren?"
Nara already knew the answer. Not where anyone sensible wanted him. • • • Aren felt the null field arrive differently. Seris staggered. Cassian swore. Maelin's aura vanished so abruptly the room seemed larger. Aren felt almost nothing. Then the Codex opened.
[External Mandate suppression detected.]
[Host connection: none.]
[Imprint functionality: stable.]
[Sovereign Vessel: stable.]
[Worldspine: responsive.]
[Veil Thread: stable.]
The silence around him was not emptiness. It was advantage. He hated that.
"They're suppressing everyone except me," he said.
Cassian's face tightened.
"That is what the field was designed to test."
"Test?"
"Halvek doesn't just retrieve anomalies. He validates them."
The first breach charge hit the archive door. Maelin took Worldspine from Aren's hands. He blinked. Even without Essence, she held the spear like it belonged in a battlefield.
"You are not fighting the first team," she said.
"Why?"
"Because they came prepared for you. They did not come prepared for an old woman with forty years of spear training and no power."
The door opened. Maelin proved her point. The first agent entered behind a null shield. She hooked his ankle. The second got the spear shaft across the throat. The third raised a suppression emitter. Maelin threw Worldspine. Aren caught it after it passed through the emitter's control housing.
"Old woman?" Seris asked.
"Strategic misrepresentation," Maelin said.
They moved. Cassian led them toward a service stair connecting the archive to Anchor III's access routes.
"Halvek will lock the upper halls," he said. "He wants Aren below."
Aren looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because Anchor III is the best place on this mountain to determine exactly what you are."
"And if I don't go?"
"He will keep the null field active until people die from secondary failures. Healing wards. Water lifts. Temperature seals. The sect was built assuming cultivation works."
Rage entered Aren quietly. Halvek had turned fourteen hundred people into leverage. The Codex noticed.
[Host emotional state elevated.]
[Dominion compatibility fluctuation detected.]
"Not now."
[Confirmed.]
Seris heard him.
"System?"
"Yes."
"Useful?"
"No."
"Consistent."
They reached the Hall of Mirrors. The constructs from Aren's trial stood dead in their alcoves. No Essence. No function. Except one. The Wellspring construct's head turned. Aren stopped.
The construct was only the first thing the null field woke incorrectly.
A second alarm sounded beneath the Hall of Mirrors.
Then a third.
The training floor split.
Black-red light poured through the seam.
Cassian stopped so hard Seris nearly collided with him.
"That isn't Observatory."
Aren felt the boundary through his boots.
The mountain had been holding more than one sealed space.
The null field had disabled the formations pinning it closed.
The Codex opened.
[WORLD-SCAR BREAK DETECTED.]
[Argent designation: SPEAR VAULT NINE.]
[Grade III.]
[Containment authority: OFFLINE.]
Unauthorized use: this story is on Amazon without permission from the author. Report any sightings.
[Break state: ACTIVE.]
Aren pulled the bronze-black Deep-Delve Warrant from his coat.
It burned cold.
[Warrant recognized.]
[Emergency raid participation permitted.]
"You're joking."
Seris saw the token.
"Your duel reward."
"Apparently it has terrible timing."
Something climbed out of the floor.
A spear.
Then the arm holding it.
An armored figure assembled itself from black iron shards and dead formation light.
[VAULT SENTINEL]
[Elite construct.]
[Threat: High Vessel under null conditions / Resonant when local law returns.]
More hands reached through the breach.
The Observatory attack had accidentally triggered a dungeon Break inside the sect they were invading.
For several seconds both problems looked equally offended.
Maelin made the decision.
"Cassian. Get Aren down. Seris with him. I hold this corridor."
Aren looked at the emerging sentinels.
"Alone?"
"I have been waiting twenty years for Spear Vault Nine to open and I am furious someone else caused it."
That was not an answer.
Then three senior Spear Hall instructors arrived from the opposite passage carrying mundane weapons because their cultivation was gone.
Better.
Aren moved.
The corridor became a raid front behind him.
Above, Tavian and Nara were fighting retrieval agents with kitchen equipment and emergency boxes. Here, Maelin fought scar constructs with forty years of muscle memory. Across the mountain, ordinary disciples became useful because power had vanished.
Aren reached the exterior bridge and saw the Break expanding through the lower terraces.
Black iron growths punched from stone. Vault creatures emerged wherever old formation lines had failed.
A four-legged thing made of broken spearheads chased three first-years toward the parapet.
Aren diverted.
"Aren!" Cassian shouted.
"Thirty seconds!"
He used Hunter's Step once.
The null field made his Imprint unfair.
He reached the creature before it reached the students.
Worldspine struck the nearest leg.
The scar-beast rotated instantly.
[IRON MAW]
[Worldscar construct-fauna.]
[Weakness: joint pins retain old Spear Vault challenge geometry.]
The Deep-Delve Warrant flashed again.
A route appeared across the beast.
Not Codex guidance.
Spear Vault's own trial authority recognizing a licensed delver.
Aren hated and appreciated bureaucracy simultaneously.
He hit the first pin.
Seris hit the second with mundane steel.
The beast dropped.
Cassian crushed the third joint with the heel of his boot.
Aren drove Worldspine through the exposed core.
[SCAR ELITE DEFEATED.]
[Emergency clear contribution recorded.]
[No immediate reward manifestation during active Break.]
[Reward escrow: 1 unit.]
The escrow count rose as they descended.
[2 units.]
Aren helped two disciples pull a fallen formation master from beneath a collapsed railing while Seris held an Iron Maw at bay.
[3 units.]
Cassian disabled a retrieval shield long enough for a group of unarmed servants to cross the western hall.
[Team emergency contribution recorded.]
The Break created a strange temporary alliance at the western stair.
Three Observatory agents and six Argent disciples became trapped between two scar packs when the bridge behind them collapsed.
No one liked anyone.
The Iron Maws did not care.
Aren arrived as the first agent lost his shield.
"Truce," Seris shouted.
The captain hesitated.
A Maw bit through the railing beside his head.
"Accepted."
They fought together for ninety seconds.
Argent disciples supplied ordinary spear structure. Observatory agents supplied suppression explosives that still worked without Essence. Aren supplied Grave Sense calls and the unfair fact that his Imprints remained functional.
One agent tried to tag him with a custody seal during the fight.
Seris knocked his hand away.
"Truce."
"Standing orders."
"Then develop judgment."
The man looked ashamed.
Good.
They killed the pack.
[BREAK CLUSTER CLEARED.]
[Mixed hostile-party cooperation registered.]
[Collateral reduction bonus: active.]
The Observatory captain looked at Aren.
"I still have orders to detain you."
"I know."
"You still helped us."
"The monsters did not sign your order."
The captain almost smiled.
Then they went opposite directions and resumed being institutional enemies.
Reality was inconvenient that way.
Not every unit belonged to Aren.
Good.
At the fourth terrace, the Break produced its first real elite.
A black iron centaur climbed from the wall carrying six spears across its back.
[VAULT HUNTSMAN]
[Elite.]
[Function: marks the fastest moving target and predicts escape route.]
Hunter's Step made Aren the obvious target.
So he stopped moving.
The Huntsman marked Seris instead.
Bad.
She could not use Wellspring speed under null suppression.
Aren threw the scar-survival compass he had not yet earned—no, wrong future. He had only the Boundary Slag and Deep-Delve Warrant. The heel plate heated as the Huntsman prepared a spatial pin.
"Third spear!" Aren shouted.
Seris ducked.
The black spear struck the wall and created a temporary route-lock around where her head had been.
Cassian tackled the elite physically from the side.
The former agent was much less graceful without cultivation.
"I hate this field," he said from the floor.
Aren used ordinary footwork to approach. The Huntsman kept searching for a fast target and underestimated the man walking directly toward it.
Worldspine struck the front knee.
Seris hit the rear.
Cassian pulled one of its own spears free and drove it into the core seam.
The elite collapsed.
[VAULT HUNTSMAN DEFEATED — team.]
Elsewhere on the mountain, Nara heard the raid bell change pitch.
She did not know Aren had killed an elite.
She knew the sound meant Spear Vault Nine had entered active Break protocol.
"New problem," she said.
Tavian was holding a pantry door against two Observatory agents.
"Queue it."
The stone beneath them split.
A cluster of black spear-worms poured into the kitchen.
Cook Mara looked at the creatures, looked at her ruined soup, and became personally offended.
"Those are not sanitary."
Nara threw the Thermal Knot into a basin of cold wash water.
The rare catalyst she had won in Stonegut released its stored temperature differential. Frost spread across the floor.
The spear-worms slowed.
Old loot.
New problem.
Tavian abandoned the pantry door long enough to slam the Rootbound bracer against the floor. The red line inside the armor brightened. Two agents hit him from behind and failed to move him far enough to break the choke point.
"This bracer," he said through clenched teeth, "is excellent."
Nara dumped frozen wash water over the scar-worms.
Cook Mara used the ladle.
The absurd defense worked.
[SPEAR VAULT BREAK — local cluster neutralized.]
Nara could not see the reward screen.
She did not need one.
The kitchen remained theirs.
Then the lower stair collapsed.
Tavian planted his feet beneath the falling support beam.
Rootbound Plate flared.
Stonebody returned only weakly under the null field, but the catalyst cared about chosen ground more than Essence quantity.
He held.
Forty-three people crossed beneath him before the beam finally settled on a braced table stack.
That contribution would earn him more than killing three monsters ever could. [Reward escrow: +2.]
A small black arrowhead fell physically from the corpse.
[ROUTE PIN — Rare consumable.]
Seris used the Route Pin immediately instead of saving it for an imaginary perfect future.
The next exterior bridge lost one of its physical supports when a scar growth tore through the wall. The span shifted three inches toward the ravine.
Normally its formation would compensate.
Null field.
No formation.
Seris drove the Route Pin into the central beam.
Black light spread.
[Object fixed to current local position: 19 seconds.]
"Move!"
Twenty-two people crossed in those nineteen seconds.
The pin cracked at seventeen.
At nineteen it turned to dust.
Rare loot gone.
Bridge full of living people saved.
Seris watched the empty hole where the item had been.
Aren expected regret.
She only said, "Good purchase."
He smiled.
That was why loot mattered.
Not because inventory numbers went up.
Because eventually you spent something you wanted to keep on something you wanted more. [Temporarily fixes one object to its current local position against low-order spatial displacement.]
Seris picked it up.
"Mine."
Aren nodded.
"You were the marked target."
"That is not how salvage law works."
"It is today."
They kept moving.
Behind them, the Break kept score.
"Escrow?" Aren said.
Seris grabbed his sleeve.
"Later."
They ran.
The bridge ahead was blocked by Observatory agents behind shields.
Behind them, two more Iron Maws climbed onto the terrace.
For one ridiculous moment both sides stared at one another.
Then a Maw attacked the agents.
Aren did not waste the opportunity.
"Everyone left!"
The Observatory captain shouted, "Subject—"
The Iron Maw bit his shield in half.
Subject conversation postponed.
Aren, Seris, and Cassian crossed while the agents fought the dungeon they had accidentally released.
The Break alarm followed them down the mountain.
Every few breaths Aren's warrant updated.
[Break containment: 38%.]
The number fell again.
[21%.]
Then stopped.
Something in the center of Spear Vault Nine had taken control of the remaining breach points.
Every black iron growth on the mountain turned at once toward Anchor III.
Seris saw it.
"They're moving with us."
"Not us," Aren said. "The Anchor."
A low horn rolled through the floors.
The Deep-Delve Warrant displayed a raid map. Six active breach nodes. Four already contained by Argent teams. Two moving.
One was theirs.
The second was directly above Nara and Tavian.
Aren stopped.
Cassian said, "We cannot go back."
Aren knew.
The knowledge did not make leaving friends behind easy.
He touched the warrant.
"Can this route information be shared?"
[Local raid authority supports team broadcast through physical relay only under null conditions.]
"Physical."
Seris pulled the Route Pin from the Huntsman salvage and looked at the map.
"The emergency bell network."
Of course.
Nara had turned the mountain's mundane bells into a network because magic might fail.
Aren used Worldspine's shaft to strike the old service pipe beside the bridge in the pattern marked on the raid slate.
Three. Two. Three. One.
Below, the signal carried through metal.
Nara heard it.
She knew exactly which stair was about to become a breach.
Minutes later the raid map changed.
[Node Five contained.]
Aren exhaled.
They had defeated part of a dungeon without seeing one another.
That felt more like a team than standing in the same boss room. [31%.] [27%.]
Going the wrong direction.
Then a new line appeared.
[Core relation detected below Anchor III access geometry.]
Aren understood.
The Worldscar and Anchor were connected.
Of course they were.
Nothing under Mount Ardent was allowed to be simple.
"That shouldn't work."
Cassian paled. Black lines spread across the construct's silver body. Observatory override. Mechanical power. The construct stepped down.
[Modified training construct.]
[Mandate engine replaced by null-core actuator.]
[Threat: HIGH under suppressed environment.]
Of course Halvek had prepared an enemy that did not need cultivation either. The construct attacked. Maelin went left. Seris right. Neither had reinforcement. Aren became the strongest person in the room by accident. That meant responsibility. He met the construct head-on. Worldspine hit silver forearm. The impact traveled through his shoulders. The machine was physically stronger. Fine. He had fought stronger. Hunter's Step redirected him outside the second strike. The construct adapted. Its head tracked the unnatural movement instantly. Training data. It remembered him.
"It has my trial pattern."
Maelin understood.
"Then stop fighting like you did in the trial."
Aren smiled despite the danger. Line Break. The construct expected Hunter's Step. Aren used an ordinary shuffle Maelin had drilled until he hated it. Its counter went to the wrong place. Worldspine struck the knee. Seris hit the opposite joint with a mundane sword cut. Cassian threw a metal archive box under its foot. The construct stumbled. Maelin shouted, "Neck seam!" Aren thrust.
The broken spear entered the actuator housing. The construct froze.
[ELITE CONSTRUCT DEFEATED.]
[No soul detected.]
[Devour unavailable: null-core incompatible.]
[Manifested technical salvage detected.]
A small black cylinder rolled from the opened chest.
[NULL-CORE MEMORY PIN - RARE TECHNICAL MATERIAL]
[Contains combat adaptation logs and suppression-engine telemetry.]
[Potential future use: study enemies operating without Mandate access.]
Aren pocketed it.
"Loot?" Seris asked.
"Information."
"You sound disappointed."
"I'm learning to appreciate information."
Maelin pointed down the stair.
"Appreciate while moving."
The stairwell opened briefly onto an exterior bridge. Without cultivation, the wind became an enemy. Mount Ardent dropped away on both sides. Normally disciples crossed the span by running along the rails or stepping through the air. Now everyone had to use the actual bridge, and the Observatory knew it. Six agents waited at the far end behind portable shields. Aren stopped.
"Crossbows."
Cassian looked over the parapet.
"No alternate route."
Seris tested her sword grip. "I hate being ordinary." Maelin snorted. "You have never tried it long enough to know." The first bolt flew. Aren caught it on Worldspine's shaft. The impact hurt. Three more followed.
"They want me in front," he said.
"Yes," Cassian replied.
"So don't give them what they want," Maelin said.
Aren looked at the bridge chains. Old iron. Heavy. Decorative under normal conditions. He smiled.
"Tavian would like this plan."
"That is not encouraging," Seris said.
Aren struck the near-side tension latch. Nothing happened. Maelin hit it too. The rusted mechanism released. One bridge rail dropped three feet and swung outward on its chain. Aren grabbed it. Sovereign Vessel strained. He pulled. The whole suspended rail swept across the bridge like a battering arm. Observatory shields met several hundred pounds of iron. Formation discipline did not matter. The agents scattered.
"Now."
They ran. Seris reached the first soldier and disarmed him with three mundane cuts. Maelin struck another in the knee. Cassian, to Aren's surprise, punched a third man in the throat.
"You can fight?"
"Badly."
"Useful distinction."
The commander drew an ordinary pistol-crossbow and aimed at Seris. Aren used Hunter's Step. The bolt entered his upper arm instead. Pain flashed.
[Foreign object. No toxin detected.]
Seris's face changed.
"Aren."
"Later."
He broke the commander’s weapon with Worldspine's shaft. The Codex offered accelerated healing. Aren declined. The bolt had missed bone. Origin was limited. Pain was not an emergency. That decision mattered five minutes later when an injured junior disciple appeared from a side stair bleeding from the abdomen. Aren used 1.1 Origin to slow internal bleeding until they could hand him to a mundane healer team. The Codex displayed the resource loss without judgment. Aren felt something settle inside him. Origin was power. Power was choice. The order mattered. At the far side of the bridge they found a portable suppression repeater.
Cassian began to destroy it. Aren stopped him.
"Can Nara learn from it?"
Cassian looked at the device, then at Aren.
"Possibly."
"Then disable it without breaking the core."
Seris smiled faintly.
"Strategic hoarding."
"Exactly."
They took the core. The mountain still had lessons to give them even while someone was trying to turn it off. They descended. At the next landing, an Observatory loudspeaker crackled.
"Aren Vael," Halvek said. "Your continued resistance increases harm to unrelated persons."
Aren stopped. The words were careful. Not a threat. A transfer of blame. Cassian said quietly, "He is very good at making coercion sound administrative." Aren touched the wall. Grave Sense spread through the mountain. Thousands of footsteps. Fights. People carrying injured. Somewhere far below, something enormous had begun to turn. Anchor III. The black key heated against his chest. Worldspine vibrated.
The Codex displayed a route. Not to safety. Down.
"He's right about one thing," Aren said.
Seris looked at him.
"Which thing?"
"People are getting hurt because he wants me."
"That does not make his choice yours."
Aren met her eyes. That mattered. More than she knew.
"I know."
He started down.
"Which is why I'm going to make it his problem."
Behind them, Mount Ardent's last emergency lamp went dark. The mountain fell silent. And deep beneath the sect, Anchor III opened its eye.
