[FROLO]

The line between illusion and reality for Aleksandr Petrov had grown thinner than he had thought possible. It was insane how the change had been, and frankly, a part of him still leaned into the possibility that this was a show.

Because there was just no way the man with the highest body count was right here with cakes like he was some domesticated husband.

The sight was so soft it was sickening.

And the way that Katya smiled from ear to ear so freely, so happily like this was what happiness was supposed to be like unsettled Aleksandr.

For a moment he wondered if he and Katya would ever have had that if he’d been a proper man. If he’d not tried to use the Romanov omega.

Because Katya was right.

He was a Romanov omega.

Even without Sergei’s backing, Katya Romanov was easily one of the most protected omegas in the city. The Romanovs were quiet businessmen who had no hand whatsoever in the underworld...

But they had enough influence over people who were part of that world to the point that they didn’t even have to stain their hands to get a job done.

And with Svetlana and Andre openly rallying for the safety of Katya Romanov and assigning themselves as his protectors, Alek should have backed off.

Long before the Moskowsky family had made the Romanov omega the most protected omega in the realm.

But he was past that at the moment, right?

’Focus. The omega was a job, not an emotional piece,’ Alek reminded himself as if he wasn’t gutted by the sheer sight of Katya Romanov so happy and free.

He didn’t understand, really.

He couldn’t even wrap his head around it all.

Sergei had bound Katya to a contract when Katya was still married to his son.

Sergei was not a saint, and he was the worst of creation in the realm.

There was just no way that Katya Romanov looked around him and his heart settled on the most diabolical man in the city.

The hands that were usually covered in blood stains had baked chocolate cakes.

Alek wished it was just his imagination. But even his imagination wasn’t that strong enough to think of Sergei Moskowsky wearing an apron in the kitchen baking. Even worse, coming with shit like this.

What the hell had Alek missed?

Because there was just no way.

It made no sense.

"You should leave, Aleksandr," Sergei said, rubbing Katya’s arm gently while the omega just focused on the cakes he had been given like it was all that mattered right now.

Not the fact that there were mercenaries around him and a member of the Bratva. Katya didn’t seem to care about anything else, and gods be damned, Alek had always wanted to see this side of Katya.

Because if he had managed to get Katya this soft and trusting of him, he would have been able to bring down the man before him without even having to think hard. Because Katya Romanov was the greatest weakness and strength of the barbarian of Frolo.

Alek had long learned that Sergei did things carefully when it came to Katya Romanov. He shielded the omega from seeing the side of the underworld that Alek had so brazenly introduced Katya to.

Maybe it was a miscalculation on his end, but fuck was the sight messing with him.

Still, Alek was not going to let go.

Not yet.

He would bake Katya chocolate cakes too.

He had seen the way Katya’s eyes lit up, and there was no doubt that was the omega’s favorite dessert. And Alek could start from there. He would figure out what flowers Sergei sent Katya and use these too. Because clearly roses didn’t work on Katya anymore.

He had to best Sergei.

It was the only way.

Because unlike the beginning, when Alek had been determined to take someone Sergei loved because of the oath he and Sergei shared, this time Alek had something better.

Motivation.

He would take Katya back. He would woo the omega back, and if he had to grovel a thousand times so Katya Romanov would forgive him, Alek would do it.

Because Sergei didn’t deserve this kind omega. Sergei didn’t deserve to kiss those citrus-scented lips. Sergei didn’t deserve to be the one Katya went to bed beside every single night. And Alek would prove to Katya that he was a good person.

Maybe that was why the alpha went on his knees while Katya giggled over chocolate cakes and Sergei whispered simple nothings in the omega’s ears.

He had to try.

Manipulative as it was, he had to.

Because happiness was the one thing Sergei Moskowsky didn’t deserve, and Alek would be damned if he let Sergei have the one thing he had taken from Alek years ago.

Because happiness for Alek had been in the form of a person too. Once upon a time, thirty years ago. In a building far in the upper district where the elites had always lived. Where life was always worth it.

He had been happy with his person, and then Sergei came along. And Sergei ruined that for him. Snatched his happiness away without even thinking of what it would do to Aleksandr.

But now...

Alek was not even going to try hurting Katya Romanov. He wouldn’t because clearly the Romanov omega had a fortress around him in the form of human shields that didn’t mind dying for him.

Alek would go for the heart.

The heart he was so sure he had been a part of.

But had he, really?

"Baby, I’m sorry," Alek said, head hung in shame, his tears making a show.

He knew he was being performative, but Katya Romanov never liked it when people cried around him. Katya had a soft heart, one that Alek had tried to use for the worst.

Maybe now if he stayed here like this and showed how apologetic he was, maybe Katya would love him. Maybe Katya would come back to him.

It was twisted. But Sergei had taken his person in the worst of ways. And Alek would take Sergei’s person with softness and love. No matter what he had to do for that.

He would get Katya back.

"What the hell are you doing?" Sergei stared amusedly, and Alek lifted his head. He looked like he was really sorry. And frankly, it was unsettling how someone could conform that fast.

"Little rose, please," Alek begged, hands on his knees like he was at his lowest.

Katya looked at him.

Really looked at the alpha on his knees, and something passed through his eyes. Before he handed the cakes to Sergei, making the barbarian wonder whether Katya was buying into this shit somehow right now.

Still, Sergei waited.

Even when Katya walked to Alek.

Then kneeled... beside Alek.

"Wh... What are you? Little rose..." Alek stuttered, tripping over his words as he looked to his side.

Katya matched his posture and even the way his hands were resting on his lap.

And instead of Katya looking to Alek...

He looked at Sergei.

"Vladimir," Katya began softly, and Sergei paled, silently praying Katya didn’t ask him to call off whatever he was doing to Alek.

Alek smiled victoriously for a moment.

Then...

"You... Alpha..." Katya spoke almost quietly.

Sergei stiffened at that familiar tone, yet before he could breathe another word...

"I’ve been really good, alpha... haven’t I?" Katya asked, scent sweetening even more, as he licked his lips sensually.

Sergei’s breath hitched.

This brat.

This. Brat.

"Alpha..." Katya whined shamelessly, Alek forgotten.

Sergei stepped forward.

Katya keened.

"You little spoiled brat," Sergei growled possessively.

Katya... giggled. "Only for alpha."

Gods, this little menace would be the death of him.

"Up," he commanded.

The omega didn’t hesitate.
