Chapter 56: Chapter 56: Cute Pet

Three days?

Chen Xing did a quick mental calculation. She didn’t have much going on, so making a trip wasn’t out of the question.

"Do you need me? My rates are very reasonable!" For once, she was the one eagerly volunteering, even lowballing her own price.

"You’re willing to go?" Captain Lu thought he had misheard.

The Military Brigade Commander had actually suggested bringing Chen Xing along and offering her a generous reward.

But he had refused.

Chen Xing was a young woman. It wasn’t exactly proper for her to travel with a large group of men, especially on a dangerous mission. There was no need for her to face that risk.

"If the pay is good, I’ll go anywhere!" Chen Xing knew from his tone that Captain Lu had wanted to bring her.

If she was right, then the Military Brigade Commander must have brought it up as well.

Sure enough, Captain Lu confessed, "To be honest with you, the Military Brigade Commander said this mission has some risks. He heard you were capable and wanted to hire you for a handsome sum. But I felt that as a young woman, you shouldn’t be taking such risks, so I refused on your behalf. Are you sure you want to go?" He still seemed skeptical.

After all, Chen Xing was someone who wouldn’t even go to the Capital City. She must have a special attachment to Hualai City.

Her volunteering to go to the North Sea now made him a little incredulous.

"Yes!" A cold smirk touched Chen Xing’s lips. "Tell the Military Brigade Commander to send my payment directly to Hualai City. And he can pick me up while he’s at it!"

’This trip to the North Sea will finally reveal what the Military Brigade Commander is really planning.’

Captain Lu completely missed the disdain in her tone toward the Military Brigade Commander. "Done! I’ll send what I owe you along with it!"

After hanging up, Chen Xing put the matter out of her mind.

She busied herself in the kitchen for a while, and soon a whole sushi feast was laid out on the table.

Eel sushi, salmon sushi, beef sushi, torched sushi... sardine sashimi, rice with fish roe, and tempura.

She started a live stream for the meal, finishing everything in just over ten minutes.

She glanced at the camera only once from start to finish before logging off.

She hadn’t slept much last night, and now, with a full stomach, a wave of drowsiness washed over her.

By the time she woke up, it was already getting dark.

She remained in bed, not getting up, and instead entered her personal dimension.

After organizing the supplies she had recently collected, she was about to leave when she realized she couldn’t see Meng Hu.

Lately, whenever she entered the dimension, the incredibly fierce tiger would act like a little kitten, chasing her around and bobbing its head.

Normally, she could sense the location of anything inside her dimension.

Just as she was wondering, a splashing sound came from the direction of the spring.

She walked over quickly and saw that the spring had changed.

It had originally been a simple spring with a small flow of water.

Now, the flow was significantly stronger, gushing out like a small waterfall.

Below the spring, a small river had naturally formed, stretching off into the distance.

’The dimension’s upgrade must have changed the spring. More spring water is always a good thing.’

The adorable behemoth was swimming freely in the river water.

When it saw Chen Xing approaching, it swam to the bank, stuck its head out, and waited for its master to dote on it.

Chen Xing was speechless.

She didn’t move. Meng Hu instantly leaped onto the bank and nuzzled against her side.

It wanted pets, it wanted hugs, it wanted to be held up high...

Chen Xing rolled her eyes.

Even though she had been reborn, she still couldn’t get used to such a massive beast acting cute.

Seeing that its cute act wasn’t working, Meng Hu immediately started prancing and circling around Chen Xing.

Chen Xing ignored it, checking its injuries instead.

Not only were all of the tiger’s wounds gone, but it was also more robust than before, and a fair bit larger all around.

Crucially, its wounds had all been inflicted by zombies, yet there was no sign of it turning into one.

’If the dimension has healing properties, and if I can still control it on the outside, then this tiger could become my own unique weapon.’

As the idea formed in Chen Xing’s mind, she had already acted on it.

The tiger instantly materialized in Song Yiguo’s living room, craning its neck and letting out a ferocious roar.

But upon seeing Chen Xing lying on the bed in the living room, its ferocious gaze instantly turned adorable, and it trotted to the bedside to start nuzzling her again.

Still begging for hugs, still wanting to be held up high...

’Run a lap!’ At Chen Xing’s command, the big fella ran a wide circle around the living room before returning to its original spot, tongue lolling out as it awaited praise.

Chen Xing was delighted.

’When I take this thing out with me in the future, people will give me a wide berth!’

She sent her big, adorable pet back into the dimension, where it dove headfirst into the spring and began to swim around gleefully.

Chen Xing, meanwhile, went to the kitchen to prepare dinner.

Dinner would be something simple...

A large steak, creamy pasta, mixed fried rice, stir-fried bean sprouts, an avocado salad, a small cake...

By the time she’d polished everything off, she realized her appetite was growing larger and larger.

But her weight hadn’t changed much at all.

’Who cares!’

’A good appetite is a blessing, and I’m not about to deny myself.’

She then found a tub of Baskin-Robbins ice cream and started eating.

Just then, the security monitor flashed. Chen Xing walked over with her ice cream to check it.

The system was set up to flash a red light whenever someone appeared at the front gate.

It was Hao Wenli and the other two women.

They weren’t leaving. Instead, they lingered at the main entrance, their expressions tense.

Hao Wenli, in particular, kept glancing back at the surveillance camera.

She was conflicted, wanting to ask Chen Xing if she had heard the terrifying roar.

That sound hadn’t come from some small animal, but a large, wild beast.

She wanted to stay, but she was afraid of the beast in the building. She wanted to leave, but she was afraid the roads weren’t safe. All they could do was hesitate at the entrance.

Seeing Hao Wenli’s indecision, He Laiyu grew anxious. "Wenli, it’s more dangerous to just stand here. Why don’t we go to my place?" At least there were no wild animals there.

She deeply regretted coming here. She shouldn’t have been so quick to trust someone else.

Hao Wenli couldn’t make up her mind.

’But what about the mission?’

"The roads are too dangerous to travel now!" she said, glancing back at the monitor again. "Besides, my friend is all alone on the top floor. How could I just abandon her?" She was certain Chen Xing was watching, so she made her words sound as sincere as possible.

He Laiyu glanced upward. "I don’t think she’s scared in the slightest. You don’t need to worry about her."

He Yu’an tugged on He Laiyu’s arm. "Auntie, let’s just listen to Sister Lili and stay. The power’s out at our place, there’s no more water, and who knows how long our little bit of food will last!"

He Laiyu glanced at the lobby. It wasn’t brightly lit, but you could at least see clearly. It was definitely much better than her own home.

"But... what about the beast in the building?"

Hao Wenli shot her an irritated glance.

’If I knew what to do, I wouldn’t have been standing here all this time!’

"Why don’t we just go back to our room?" He Yu’an suggested.

The three exchanged glances and decided to go back. But before they could even step back inside, a powerful roar suddenly echoed through the building.

Immediately, everything went dark, plunging them into pitch-blackness.

The three of them scrambled outside almost simultaneously.

When Chen Xing looked down from her floor, she saw Hao Wenli and He Yu’an sprinting for their lives at the front. About two meters behind them was He Laiyu, running desperately to keep up.

But the strangest part was that He Yu’an was actually slightly ahead of Hao Wenli.
