Chapter 72: Chapter 72: Ingratitude
Chen Xing first put Meng Hu into her space.
The big guy must have been truly exhausted, because as soon as he entered the space, he dove headfirst into the spring water.
The "cute pet," who had seemed so weary just a moment ago, was instantly re-energized.
The few wounds on his body were also beginning to heal.
He was starving, but Chen Xing didn’t pay him any more mind.
She found a pile of pre-made food in her space, heated it up in the microwave, and started eating within ten minutes.
A large twelve-inch pizza, fruit salad, creamy mashed potatoes, fried skewers, pudding... she ate with great relish, finishing it all off with a large glass of juice.
Once she was full, she flopped right onto the bed and fell fast asleep.
In the early morning, she heard a commotion downstairs.
Then, her doorbell rang. It was Brother Xiao, anxiously waking her up. "Chen Xing, the Migratory Clan found us..."
Chen Xing immediately leaped out of bed, put everything away with a wave of her hand, and let Meng Hu out.
Meng Hu, roused from a deep sleep, was thoroughly displeased, but he obediently followed her downstairs.
Chen Xing was the first one down. Brother Xiao stared at the door, which was being pounded on with loud BANGS, and a worried look crossed his face.
After all, there were only two men in the entire building.
"Are there any other exits?" Brother Xiao had already observed the situation outside the main entrance. The chances of breaking through were slim. "There are fifty or sixty people out there. It’s not likely we can force our way out!"
Just then, Ding Yiyu came down, and not long after, Sister Feng and the others all came running down one by one.
The expressions on their faces were grim.
If they were captured again, it would certainly mean death.
Sister Feng frowned, studying everyone for a long moment before asking, "How could they know we’re here?"
Logically, the Migratory Clan shouldn’t have expected them to return to Hualai City.
But from the way they were positioned, they definitely knew who was inside.
Brother Xiao was puzzled too, but that wasn’t the most important thing right now. "Chen Xing, do you know how many exits this place has?"
"There are only two exits: the main entrance and the underground garage." She had blown up the garage door before, but it had since been repaired, probably on Song Yiguo’s orders.
"We can’t use either one!" Brother Xiao knew these people all too well.
Whenever they raided a place, they always sealed the entrances and exits first.
He and Ding Yiyu had sensed something was wrong right from the beginning of the apocalypse. They acted fast, gathered a lot of supplies, and found a decent hideout: Hualai City’s Xingfu Building.
Xingfu Building was a mixed-use commercial and residential building with a full range of basic facilities.
The two of them had chosen it for its location, which was far from the commercial district and had few zombies.
After living there for a few days, they had scavenged all the surrounding supplies, filling several apartments in the building.
Normally, there would have been nothing to attract the Migratory Clan’s attention.
But a few days later, out of the goodness of their hearts, they rescued a man named Li Rongtao and brought him back to their base.
He accidentally saw a room full of supplies, and it sparked his greed.
The next day, Li Rongtao disappeared with a small portion of the supplies. Two days after that, they received a notice from the Migratory Clan.
They thought it was a prank and didn’t pay it much mind, but that very night, they were attacked by the Migratory Clan.
Their lives were on the line!
They decisively abandoned the supplies and tried to create a diversion to escape from the underground garage by car. Unexpectedly, the enemy had already blocked both exits.
After being captured, they ran into Li Rongtao within the Migratory Clan’s ranks. It turned out he had been caught and sold them out.
That man taught them a harsh lesson: never casually rescue strangers.
For this very reason, when they were rescuing people with Chen Xing last time, they made a point not to release Li Rongtao, the man who had betrayed them.
"We can’t escape either way, so are we just supposed to let them capture us?" Sister Feng was the first to object. "We have to at least try! We can’t just surrender without a fight!"
’No matter what, I am absolutely not going back.’
’Out here, there’s still hope of seeing my family.’
’If I get captured again, all hope will be lost.’
Just then, the elevator chimed, "DING..."
Hao Wenli and He Yu’an ran out, their faces furious. "Who the hell led the Migratory Clan here again?"
At the thought of being captured again, Hao Wenli’s whole body ached.
’Can’t I just complete a mission in peace?’
’I’ve only been back for a day!’
Still complaining, Hao Wenli and He Yu’an reached the lobby and simultaneously jumped back in shock.
Terrified, they pointed at the large tiger behind Chen Xing and shrieked, "A... a... a tiger..."
They suddenly remembered the sound of a wild beast they had heard one night, and their faces grew even paler.
’Could it be that there’s been a beast in the building this whole time?’
The very thought sent a chill down their spines.
"He doesn’t hurt people!" Yanyan was no longer afraid of Meng Hu and even dared to approach and stroke his back.
Seeing that the tiger was indeed docile, Hao Wenli shot Yanyan a glare.
She then pointed at Chen Xing, Sister Feng, and the others. "It must have been you! You led them here again! Now what are we going to do?"
Though she said "you," she was really pointing her finger at Chen Xing.
She hated Chen Xing so much.
Whenever she showed up, this kind of crap never ended.
Qiao Qiao had originally thought Hao Wenli and He Yu’an were Chen Xing’s friends. But now, hearing Hao Wenli find fault with their group with every word, she didn’t hold back and her expression turned hostile. "You’d better watch your mouth!"
Her words were pure street, and combined with a childhood spent fending for herself, her gaze was cold and defiant.
Hao Wenli’s eyes flickered, and she seemed somewhat wary of Qiao Qiao. "Chen Xing was the one who led those people here last time, and now they’re back again. If they aren’t here for her, who else would they be for?" The memory of her aching body made her forget all about her mission. "The only way we’ll be safe is to hand her over."
"No!" Almost simultaneously, two men and five women voiced their opposition.
Hao Wenli and He Yu’an: "..."
"She’s the one who attracted the Migratory Clan! If we don’t hand her over, we’ll all die!"
"Then we’ll die together!" Qiao Qiao couldn’t believe Hao Wenli could be so vicious, her anger flaring on her face. "Chen Xing saved our lives! We can’t do this, even if it means dying!"
Last night, she’d heard from Xiao Ru that there were two other people in the building whom Chen Xing had also saved.
’Who knew they’d be so ungrateful?’
"If you want to go die, be my guest, but I’m not going to!" Hao Wenli continued trying to win everyone over. "If we hand her over, we still have a chance to survive. I’m sure most of you don’t want to die either, right?"
She couldn’t believe that besides this shorty in front of her, anyone else would actually be willing to die for Chen Xing.
But to her surprise...
"We’ll face this together!" Sister Feng was the first to declare her stance, and the others all shared the same sentiment.
Qiao Qiao moved, closing the distance to Hao Wenli. "Did you hear that? We don’t betray our friends!"
Hao Wenli’s eyes darkened, and she didn’t dare say anything more.
Chen Xing, however, was a little moved. ’I can’t believe these people would actually risk their lives for me.’
"There’s no need for everyone to take the risk!" said Brother Xiao, who had been silent for a while. He pointed to the main entrance and began to explain his plan in a low voice. "In a minute, Xiao Yu and I will draw them away..."
"Run out the main entrance? Do you think the Migratory Clan members are idiots?" Hao Wenli immediately scoffed loudly, her voice definitely loud enough to be heard outside.
Brother Xiao and the others: "..."
"Can’t you keep your goddamn voice down?" Qiao Qiao may have been small, but she had a bad temper, and her voice was even louder than Hao Wenli’s.
"I was just worried about you, wasn’t I?" Hao Wenli immediately backed down. "But what I said is true! There are dozens of people at the main entrance. Isn’t running out that way just suicide? Whoever wants to run can run, but I’m definitely not going!"
