"Get out of here!" the guard exclaimed furiously.
"How dare you even come here without the Soul Shard! You’re a failure!"
Together, they threw the young man outside. He fell to the ground, rolling in the dust.
"Kha... Kha... Kha...!"
Kreyn got to his feet as his eyes fixed on the smug guards.
"They’re not even Hunters, yet they think they’re such big shots!"
Rolling up his sleeves, he strode toward them with a menacing glare. They were standing in front of a large white building. It was the Aegis A-13 Research Center, one of the few places where a person could find out whether they had a talent or not.
"I only got one try! Why do others get a whole day, but I was given just five minutes?!"
The guard on the left frowned.
"What else did you expect when you came here? These people paid huge sums of money!"
"Yeah, how did you even end up here?"
Kreyn clenched his teeth in anger.
"What? You bastards, this is a government program! Or don’t you know that not everyone has to pay?"
At that very moment, the guards exchanged glances and burst out laughing:
"Hahahahahahahahaha! So he’s one of the ’free ones’, and without any talent, too!"
"Can you believe it? He had one chance, and he blew it!"
Then, the guard on the left gave Kreyn a cold stare.
"No, seriously, get out of here. If you don’t have the Soul Shard, there’s nothing to talk about. You’ll never become a Hunter!"
The second guard pointed to the building behind him.
"They prepare a lot of monsters for each test. They’re needed for the next stages. You were the only one who failed the first stage, which means you don’t stand a chance!"
Suddenly, the first guard stepped forward, and his fist slammed right into Kreyn’s face.
"GHA!"
Kreyn hit the ground as blood streamed from his nose.
"Enough wasting time on this trash. If the scientists said he failed, then that’s how it is. You! Get back to the city through the transit zone, and don’t let me see you here again!"
No matter how much Kreyn wanted to try one more time, there was nothing he could do.
"Damn it!"
He kicked a piece of garbage as he walked away into a dirty alley, feeling the guards’ condescending stares on his back.
"Why? Why do all these arrogant bastards have Genes and I don’t? That was my only chance!"
The main power in this world was the Genes, and some people were born with them. The only way to unlock a Gene was through the Soul Shard. With it, one could see a person’s bloodline and find that Gene.
All Hunters had different Genes, but without them, an ordinary human stood no chance against the monsters that were a constant threat to any city. That was why Kreyn and many others tried so desperately to become Hunters, so they would no longer fear death and could fight the monsters.
"Tsk, looks like there’s nothing special about me after all." Kreyn glanced at Aegis A-13, preparing to head toward the platform in the distance.
It wasn’t a district, but a floating island hovering not far from the military base. It was built so that, in the event of an incident, the people in the city wouldn’t be harmed.
Kreyn cast a glance at the city in the distance and the surrounding wastelands. Other floating islands were visible on the horizon, but today only Aegis A-13 had a test scheduled. Each test required extensive preparation.
Thud!
Suddenly, a loud noise rang out as several military aircraft flew up to the platform. Soldiers rushed outside in full combat gear, carrying heavy guns.
"Move forward! Don’t waste any time!" The commander’s deep voice boomed.
Kreyn’s eyes darted from side to side.
"Hmm? What the hell is going on here?" He looked at the Aegis A-13. "Did something happen over there?"
Maybe he was upset about the failure, but it’s better to be a living person than a dead Hunter.
"Maybe those two bastards were right. Let’s get out of here!" Kreyn ran toward the platform, cutting through an alley.
Soon, he noticed something strange, a red light covered the ground. It wasn’t just a glare but a powerful radiance coming from above.
Kreyn raised his head as his eyes widened in disbelief.
The red star sliced through the sky as rings of light streaked across it, causing the entire island to tremble.
"Wait... Where is it going...?" Kreyn muttered as he realized too late that the star was about to crash right down on him.
BLAST!
With a thunderous crash, the star struck the island, shaking it to its core.
The shockwave threw Kreyn to the ground as he covered his face with his hands at the last moment.
The noise, the blur before his eyes, and the soldiers’ shouts in the distance all blended together, pounding in Kreyn’s head.
"Get out of there! Get him out of there!"
"Hurry! Pull him back!"
But at that moment, Kreyn was only looking at one thing. A red gene hovered before him. It rapidly shifted between a constellation, a blood-red sword, and a hammer with an anvil.
Blood streaming down his forehead flooded his eyes as he reached out his hand, all to grab that gen.
The soldiers were already close. They had to save that wild gen, and for that, they were ready to kill Kreyn.
"Fire!" the commander ordered.
At that very moment, the gene trembled, causing a shockwave that rocked the entire island, tilting it to one side.
Unable to maintain their balance, the soldiers, guards, and everyone else on the island tumbled downward, desperately trying to grab onto something.
Runes formed before Kreyn’s blurred eyes, bringing a smile to his face.
[You have obtained the Blood Constellation Gene.]
[Extract the Gene of any monster to create the Soul Shard and unlock your ability.]
Kreyn was an ordinary person, not a Hunter. He didn’t know what that meant beyond the word "gene."
But at that moment, he had far bigger problems.
"Agh?"
He turned to his left only to see the research center whizzing past him.
"Why is it leaning to the left?"
It wasn’t until Kreyn looked ahead that he realized what was happening, his eyes widening in disbelief.
Dozens of people, including him, were in free fall as the island split in two. It managed to stay afloat, but everything on the island was thrown off.
The only thing that survived was the research center.
"I got the gene, and I’m going to die right away?" Kreyn’s lips trembled. "No! This can’t be!"
Fortunately for Kreyn, not only did he not want to die, but the military, who clearly hadn’t expected this, were also in the same boat.
Crack!
The walls of the research center cracked as a monster with red skin stretched over its bones, and a terrifying jaw burst out. In its jaw was a man in a white lab coat, one of the scientists who was conducting the test.
Everything had gone off course, and that was why the military had come here.
The red gene was the variable no one had anticipated.
"Holy shit!" Kreyn exclaimed as he watched one monster after another crawl out of the research center. They were rushing out like wild beasts, unaware that outside, nothing awaited them but a fall from a tremendous height.
Kreyn’s eyes darted from side to side, looking at the young people who fell outside along with the monsters. Their faces were twisted with horror, and Kreyn recognized some of them.
They were contenders just like him, those who came here to obtain their gene. They were in the next stages, while Kreyn had already failed.
Ironically, Kreyn was the only one of them all to receive the gene, though it seemed that neither he nor any of them would survive this incident.
"RARK!"
The monsters roared as they nimbly leaped over the debris. They were hungry and angry from being held captive.
Then, the soldiers opened fire. A hail of bullets rained down on the monsters, mostly targeting the red monster, which was more aggressive than the others.
"Shoot! Shoot if you want to live!" the commander exclaimed, reloading his blaster.
Before he could fire, the green monster sank its fangs into his throat, and the blaster flew out of his hands.
Kreyn, in turn, tried to grab hold of a piece of debris to gain some stability.
Crack!
He didn’t have time to touch the edge before the red monster appeared in front of him, claiming the debris. Its long tongue ran over its sharp fangs, filling Kreyn’s eyes with fear.
The red monster’s claws sank into Kreyn’s shoulder, holding him in place as its jaws opened wide before him.
One more moment, and the jaws would snap shut, devouring Kreyn.
Something caught the corner of Kreyn’s eye. It was the commander’s blaster, fully charged and aimed directly at them.
BLAST!
The energy blast struck the monster head-on. The monster’s neck snapped as its head flew off to the side.
Blood gushed out, flooding Kreyn’s face, but he wasn’t looking at the blaster or the monster’s head, he was looking at something else.
A bright light burst forth as a gene materialized before him - his first gene, obtained from the monster.
[You have obtained the Crimson Reaper Gene!]
[You have received a new ability - the Gene Forge!]
[How would you like to use the gene you’ve obtained?]
Before answering, Kreyn looked down, the ground was very close.
"Damn it! I don’t know! Do whatever it takes so I can survive!"
[Your request has been accepted.]
At that very moment, red gauntlets resembling a monster’s claws appeared and became one with his arms as a bright light burst from his chest.
Debris, the research center, and the monsters, along with the soldiers and contenders, all crashed to the ground, shattering into bloody splatters.
Neither armor nor the monsters’ sturdy bodies could save them from such a height.
Amid dozens of corpses and debris, a single red sphere remained.
Shimmer!
The barrier trembled as the last pebbles fell onto it.
Inside stood Kreyn, holding his hands above his head.
In shock, he stared at the aftermath of his gene’s fall.
That day, he was the sole survivor of the incident at Aegis A-13.
