Crafting Gear From Monster Genes

"Gukard, don’t shoot ahead of time," Leora gave a clear order. "You’ll just draw attention to yourselves that way. Save it for a last resort, if any of us are in danger."

He nodded deeply as his gaze fell on the two men standing off to the side. They were carrying sacks full of dynamite on their backs.

"What about the explosives? You know, you Hunters can crush monsters’ skulls with your fists, but none of them can withstand a stick of dynamite exploding in their jaws. I’m sure of that." Gukard smirked, fearless in his gaze as he looked down at the wandering monsters below.

Leora blinked slowly.

"That’s true, but reserve the explosives for something more useful. We don’t know what’s in their nest, if it’s even here."

One of the miners smirked wryly. "Miss Leora, look how many of them are here. They always attack alone or in pairs at most, but now there’s a whole squad of them, and they’re just guarding the passage."

"Yes." His buddy whispered in agreement. "They definitely don’t want us to find more valuable Orazit!"

Before their whispering could turn into anything more, Leora raised her hand.

"I understand. Let’s stick to the plan. Kreyn and I will go first. The rest of you will handle the situation as it unfolds."

At that very moment, she leaped off the cliff, slowly approaching the Rahta Beasts.

Kreyn followed her.

"I’ll go first. I think I can take out a few of them right away."

"Hmm?" Kreyn looked at her suspiciously. "Where does that confidence come from?"

Leora stepped forward directly toward the Rahta Beasts.

Soon, several beasts spotted her and grew wary. Usually, the Rahta Beasts attacked immediately, all the miners knew that, but now they weren’t in a hurry.

"Well, I’d better get going." Leora waved her hand before taking a deep breath.

It wasn’t just a breath, she seemed to have breathed in all the air filling the caves, though neither her cheeks nor her chest were puffed out to comical proportions.

Kreyn blinked as he immediately understood why.

’Ability... She’s going to use her ability. Good, I need to know what I’m up against.’

The next moment, Leora exhaled as the air shimmered from the intense heat.

Whooooooooosh!

A powerful stream of flame surged toward the unsuspecting Rahta Beasts. They had no fur, but they burned just as brightly.

Kreyn shielded himself with his hand as a bright flame engulfed everything, leaving visible only the shadows of the monsters, fleeing in all directions.

"RHHHK!!!" "RHHHK!!!" "RHHHK!!!"

Low, agonized, and furious growls echoed through the cave as the Rahta Beasts rolled on the ground to smother the flames.

But Leora wasn’t done yet. This was only the first part of her plan.

Crack.

Electric discharges ran through her gauntlets as she pressed her palm against the ground.

White lightning streaked across the floor, reaching the burning monsters and coming into contact with the flames.

"Agh?" Kreyn froze as the first spark flared between the flames and the electricity.

BLAST!

A devastating chain reaction of blasts swept through the Rahta Beasts, one explosion after another, shaking the caves.

Rocks crashed down from the ceiling as the miners ducked, covering their heads just in case.

And still...

"That wasn’t enough," Kreyn muttered, watching the Rahta Beasts rise from the ground.

Their bodies were covered in burns and open wounds, but they were ready to fight, well, most of them. About one-fifth of them remained lying on the ground. The explosions hit them too severely.

’But the bad news is something else,’ Kreyn shifted his gaze to Leora. ’Fire and electricity? She chose her gear to match her ability. She’s smarter than Groza, and that’s a problem.’

Kreyn saw Leora as an enemy - not now, but in the near future. He didn’t dare underestimate her, because it could end quite simply for him - with his death.

Thump! Thump! Thump!

The Rahta Beasts charged at them. Most targeted Leora, but some headed for Kreyn.

"Hey, jump when I give the signal," Kreyn said suddenly.

"Agh?" Leora turned around, not expecting that. "You’ve decided to pull some kind of trick in the heat of battle?"

Kreyn lifted his leg as his right boot trembled.

"Just do it."

She nodded cautiously. "Fine. I hope it’s worth it."

The Rahta Beasts were getting closer and closer, but Kreyn stood confidently, as still as a statue.

The miners began to get nervous, and even a bead of sweat appeared on Leora’s forehead.

"RHHAAA!"

The Rahta Beast opened its jaw wide, coming right up in front of Adam.

"Now."

At that very moment, Leora leaped up, and Kreyn stomped his foot on the ground with all his might.

The accumulated energy erupted in a single burst that rocked the ground. The shockwave sent the nearest Rahta Beasts flying to the side and knocked the rest off their feet.

Before any of the monsters could recover or Leora could land, Kreyn leaped forward and, using the weight of his boots, crashed down right on the monster’s head.

The thick skull couldn’t withstand the pressure and exploded into shreds.

"Not bad, not bad at all." Leora narrowed her eyes as she touched the ground. "Are you really a rookie?"

"What? Does it take years of combat experience just to jump and stomp?"

"No."

She replied sharply.

"That’s not the point." Leora tapped her temple. "And you know it."

"RGH!"

Leora turned around as two Rahta Beasts approached her.

"Either way, we’ve still got a lot of work ahead of us."

Kreyn glanced at his pack of monsters.

"Yeah, I guess you’re right."

For the next ten minutes, Gukard and the miners watched as the two Hunters fought the monsters.

They were a little envious of their strength, but mostly they were in awe.

As they’d agreed beforehand, Leora took on the bulk of the fight, while Kreyn dealt with a few Rahta Beasts. He killed five, not counting the first one.

For the most part, Kreyn used his boots’ ability to summon stone pillars. A single pillar followed by a kick straight to the head was enough.

The Rahta Beasts had sturdy bodies and good reflexes, but there was nothing special about them.

’Looks like I was right,’ Kreyn thought, standing among the corpses. ’Their genes are high-quality, that’s true, but after the Crystal Crusher and especially that Renegade... They can’t surprise me.’

"Are you going to collect their genes, too?" Leora asked.

Kreyn smirked.

"Of course. But I won’t need much time for that. We’re going to move on anyway, aren’t we?"

"Yes." Leora gave a signal as the miners sprang into action.

Gukard waved his hand.

"Alright, guys, let’s go, let’s go! It’s time to continue with Mine C11!"

With each new gene, Kreyn’s smirk grew. The first stage was still far from complete, but he had just received 15 new genes, 1.5% each.

Leora gave him a steady look. "Are you ready?"

Everyone was standing by the breach.

"Yeah, let’s see what’s in there."

Carefully, Leora and Kreyn entered first, expecting monster attacks, but nothing happened.

The rest followed, led by Gukard, and soon they reached the edge of a cliff, this time, a truly deep one.

Gukard’s eyes widened.

"What the hell..."

The rock crumbled as a hollow appeared before them - a deep chasm full of tunnels and stone bridges with Rahta Beasts crawling across them.

But the main thing was something else - the green light emanating from below, filling everything. The color was bright and saturated - something not even 80% Orazit crystals possessed.

"This." Kreyn frowned. "This is their main source of ore, or... at least one of them."

If he could find 99% Orazit anywhere, it would be deep within this chasm, which could very well be the nest of the Rahta Beasts.
