An electric discharge struck Kreyn as he held out his arms, creating a red barrier.
The electricity passed on either side of him, but Leora was ready for it.
"Take that!"
Her foot slammed into his stomach like a halberd.
"Gha!" Kreyn gasped, only to be struck in the face by a fist the next moment.
Losing his balance, he collapsed to the ground while Leora climbed onto the table and leaped on top of him.
She channeled all the power of the electricity into her clenched fists, sending sparks flying throughout the room.
Kreyn’s pupils narrowed in panic.
He had to act fast if he didn’t want to turn into a pile of charcoal!
"It won’t be that easy..." he growled, whipping his leg upward.
It was a direct hit, and the impact sent Leora flying straight into the wall. Her back smashed through the window, and shards of glass scattered across the floor, only the brass frame saved her from falling down.
’Where... Where am I...?’
Everything went blurry before Leora’s eyes as she could barely make out a moving figure ahead.
Kreyn stood in front of the table, kicking it with all his might.
Like a concrete block, the table barreled toward Leora, and her vision cleared at the last moment.
She leaped over the table. Otherwise, it would crush her.
But before she could touch the ground, Kreyn’s fist slammed into her face at full speed.
Her head hit the table, and before she could recover, the next blow rained down on her.
BAM! BAM! BAM!
All Leora could see was an endless barrage of attacks, as well as Kreyn’s piercing gaze, devoid of pity or mercy.
He would keep hitting her until the light faded from her eyes and her heart stopped beating.
’No...’
Leora muttered to herself as two of her teeth flew out.
’Is this how it’s going to end? This... This can’t be...’
BAM!
Blood gushed from her mouth as darkness began to creep in from the edges and her eyelids grew heavier.
Suddenly, her eyes flew wide open as she thrust her arms forward.
The sharp golden tips of her gauntlets pierced Kreyn’s chest.
"This isn’t over yet! I won’t lose to someone like you!" Leora roared in fury as electric shocks coursed through her arms.
For a moment, fear flashed in Kreyn’s gaze, but very soon his eyes regained their coldness.
"Good try, but you pulled yourself together too late. It’s all over now."
Tap.
Kreyn touched her neck as a click sounded from above Leora’s head.
A blue flash flashed before her eyes as the jaw clamped down on her neck.
Blood gushed out in a powerful stream as her body began to twitch in death throes.
Kreyn, in turn, pulled her hands away from his chest and leaned on the table next to her.
"Gha..."
He sighed heavily, looking at the devastated office and at the first captain of the Crooked Horn, now dead.
"This turned out to be harder than I expected... If she’d been any faster, she would’ve burned me alive."
Kreyn blinked as his cyan eye returned to normal. Finally, he had two eyes again.
Along with his mutation, the blue claws had disappeared as well. They had already done their job.
He had to move on. The fight against Leora was only the first part of the plan.
But Kreyn simply couldn’t bring himself to head into the next battle right now. He needed to rest for at least a couple of minutes.
Step! Step! Step!
At that very moment, hurried footsteps sounded from nearby.
An echo rang through the hallway as Nario burst into the office at full speed. His hair was disheveled, and his eyes were filled with panic.
"L-Leora...? No... This can’t be..."
As soon as he saw Leora, his face went pale, and he collapsed to his knees. His greatest fear came true.
Kreyn’s expression grew somber. He had known Nario for only a couple of days, but that was enough to understand how he felt about Leora, and that he didn’t deserve to die.
’This complicates things,’ Kreyn thought as he slowly got up from the ground. ’He’s annoying, but I wouldn’t say he’s one of the bad guys.’
Kreyn had reasons to kill Leora, but not Nario. He wasn’t going to kill another person just because he might be irritating. For that, he needed reasons.
"You..."
Nario’s gaze fell on Kreyn, on his bloodied arms and his battle-scarred body.
"WHY?! WHY DID YOU DO THIS TO HER?! HOW DARE YOU TO KILL HER?!"
Tears streamed from Nario’s eyes, mingled with his rage, grief, and the pain tearing at his soul.
To him, Kreyn was the main villain who destroyed his life in an instant and took away what was most precious to him.
Kreyn leaned on the table, looking at Nario with a serious yet understanding gaze.
"We had a conflict of interest."
Nario sobbed, trying to stop the tears, but he could barely manage it.
"Look, you don’t have to be here. You can—"
"SHUT UP!!!" Nario screamed at the top of his lungs.
He got up from the ground, picking up a shard of glass from the broken window. His legs were shaking, and his eyes were filled with hatred.
Kreyn’s expression changed.
"Go ahead. If you want to avenge her, then I’ll fight you. You can also run away, and I won’t chase after you, as long as you haven’t attacked me, you’re not my enemy. The choice is yours."
Nario couldn’t even move an inch. He knew how to count and negotiate, but not how to kill.
But... as soon as he looked at Leora again, at her bloodied body and empty gaze, he made up his mind.
"AAAAAAGGGGGGRRRRR!!!"
With a furious cry, Nario lunged at Kreyn, aiming a shard of glass at his heart.
THRUST!
Kreyn’s mutated arm plunged deep into Nario’s stomach, covered in blood as it emerged from the other side.
The shard of glass sank deep into Kreyn’s shoulder, but Nario no longer had the strength to press down on it.
"You were in love with her, weren’t you?"
Kreyn asked, looking over Nario’s shoulder.
"I... Grh!" Nario couldn’t answer because of the blood pouring from his mouth.
"I know. You can be proud of yourself. You acted like a man and fought for your woman until the very end, even though you knew what it would cost you."
Kreyn finally looked him in the eyes.
"I couldn’t do the same thing myself."
Nario tried to mumble something, but his eyes lost their light, and he collapsed to the ground next to Leora.
Blood slowly pooled beneath them, spreading into a puddle.
Kreyn removed Leora’s gauntlets, cast one last glance at them, and walked away.
His part of the mission was complete. He dealt with the first captain and set their plan in motion.
His next stop was the Crooked Horn’s training hub.
By now, Groza should have heard about what happened and engaged in battle with the second captain - Arstar.
Kreyn’s hazel eyes shone in the dark passage as he was ready to go all the way.
There was no turning back.
