Chapter 130: Chapter 105: Action
"You’re not a Martial Artist, Yu Sicheng. You wouldn’t understand."
Yu Xiujiang was speechless. ’Is this really about whether I understand the Martial Dao?’
"Yu Sicheng, which forces in the East City Bureau are connected to the Hu Family?"
Su Mu asked nonchalantly.
"Sir, isn’t this going a bit too far?"
Yu Xiujiang said cautiously. ’Little Su Sima is far too vengeful.’
If Su Mu knew what Yu Xiujiang was thinking, he would have just rolled his eyes at him.
People were trying to kill him, yet he was supposed to save face for them? Impossible.
Since it was already a fight to the death, he had to use every ounce of strength he had.
He couldn’t topple the Inner City Hu Family for now, but he could certainly try to cut off one of their limbs.
"Don’t misunderstand, Yu Sicheng. I have absolutely no intention of using my position to settle a personal score. I just think it’s highly likely that Lichuan’s accomplices are hiding in those places."
Su Mu said earnestly.
......
"Chief Chen, you must be in the wrong place to be arresting fugitives. This is just a shop that sells ironware. If you want a wok or a kitchen knife, I’ve got plenty. But fugitives? Not a single one."
A short, stout, and arrogant middle-aged man in a shopkeeper’s attire blocked Chen Song and his men at the entrance.
"We’ll see if you’re hiding any fugitives after we conduct a search."
Chen Song’s hand went to the hilt of his saber. "Shopkeeper Wei," he said in a cold voice, "are you planning to obstruct the East City Bureau in its official duties?"
SHING!
The constables behind Chen Song all drew their sabers halfway from their scabbards, the atmosphere instantly turning grim.
But Shopkeeper Wei showed not a hint of fear on his face, only a cold sneer.
"My, Chief Chen, what an impressive show of authority!"
Shopkeeper Wei said coldly, "You can search, no problem. But let me be clear. We may be a small shop, but we have quite a few valuable items inside.
If anything goes missing or gets damaged, I’ll be holding you responsible, Chief Chen.
We’ll cooperate with the East City Bureau’s duties, but we won’t let you people ride on our heads and take a shit."
Shopkeeper Wei stepped aside, clearing a path.
Behind him, the bare-chested shop-hands and apprentices all stood with their arms crossed, smirking as they watched Chen Song and his men.
These apprentices were used to forging iron day in and day out, and their bodies were a mass of knotted muscle. Their glistening skin made them look far more robust than the constables.
As the constables entered the shop, they all felt a little uneasy being stared down by so many strong, young apprentices.
"Much appreciated, Shopkeeper Wei,"
Chen Song said with a cupped-fist salute. "Search! Don’t leave a single corner unturned!"
In the past, they would have kept a respectful distance from a shop with such deep connections and certainly wouldn’t have shown up to conduct a search.
But this time, Little Su Sima had given strict orders that they had to search every last one.
So, even with the shopkeeper and his men watching them like tigers, the constables began to search the premises from front to back.
"Be careful, Chief Chen," the shopkeeper said with his arms crossed, a mocking look on his face. "If you break anything, that paltry salary of yours won’t cover it in a lifetime."
"You needn’t trouble yourself with that, Shopkeeper Wei,"
Chen Song replied, his face expressionless.
"Chief, we’ve found a batch of azure gold!"
A moment later, a constable ran over from the back courtyard, his face flushed with excitement, holding a small pouch.
Certain items were regulated in the Da Xuan Dynasty, such as specific medicinal herbs, particular metals, and materials harvested from various monsters and demons.
Azure gold was one such regulated metal. According to the Da Xuan Law, its private use was forbidden.
"Well, Shopkeeper Wei? What do you have to say for yourself?"
Chen Song took the pouch of azure gold. He hefted it; it weighed about two or three pounds. He looked at Shopkeeper Wei and spoke.
"According to the Da Xuan Law, the penalty for private possession of azure gold is confiscation, plus a fine of ten gold coins."
Shopkeeper Wei remained completely unfazed. "Since you’re so fond of that little bit of azure gold, Chief Chen," he said unhurriedly, "consider it a gift.
And as for the fine..."
He turned, took a gold ingot from the counter, and casually tossed it onto the floor.
Chen Song’s face turned dark.
Wei Zhankui’s attitude was the height of humiliation.
But there was nothing Chen Song could do about it.
Wei Zhankui was absolutely right. At most, the penalty for private possession of azure gold was just a fine.
For a Weapon Forging Shop that raked in money hand over fist, it was a mere drop in the bucket.
"Chief!"
A constable picked up the gold from the floor and handed it to Chen Song.
"Secure it!" Chen Song ordered, suppressing his anger. "Hand it over to the Minister when we get back to the Government Office."
Wei Zhankui and the apprentices of the Weapon Forging Shop burst into laughter, their derision echoing through the shop.
An hour later, the constables had all returned to Chen Song’s side.
Aside from finding a few more types of prohibited metals, they discovered nothing else illegal.
The penalties for these metals were, at most, fines. It was hardly enough to do any real damage to the Weapon Forging Shop.
And Wei Zhankui had thrown out the fines for them without the slightest hesitation.
"Let’s go!"
Chen Song had a man collect the fines and was about to leave the Weapon Forging Shop.
"Not so fast, Chief Chen,"
Wei Zhankui suddenly spoke up. "You’ve searched our shop, but to just leave like this... It doesn’t seem quite right, does it?"
"What do you mean by that?"
Chen Song halted and turned to face Wei Zhankui, his voice cold.
"While your men were searching our shop just now, a Divine Weapon went missing. I don’t know which one of your brothers saw something he fancied and helped himself to it."
Wei Zhankui continued, "If it were an ordinary weapon, we’d just let him keep it as a gift.
But this Divine Weapon is priceless; we can’t just give it away for free.
So, Chief Chen, why don’t you have your man return it?"
