Chapter 193: Chapter 136: Trap
Demons and monsters. Demons are one thing, monsters another.
Demons are animals, or even plants, that have been corrupted by the world’s baleful energy.
Monsters, on the other hand, are humans tainted by that same energy—usually living ones.
A creature like a Corpse Demon, however, is generally classified as a demon.
The creatures in Daxing Mountain are mostly demons.
Monsters, however, tend to appear where people gather, such as in villages and cities.
After an animal or plant is corrupted by the world’s baleful energy, it undergoes a complete transformation, much like a human cultivating the Martial Dao.
This makes demons far stronger than ordinary beasts of prey.
Once they reach a certain stage of growth, they become Tier One Demons, with power comparable to a Martial Artist of the Blood Transformation Realm.
Even an unranked demon is on par with a Body Tempering Realm Martial Artist. An ordinary person would have virtually no chance of survival against one.
This was the extent of Su Mu’s knowledge on demons and monsters.
A roar from the distant mountain forest was carried on the wind, and the expressions of the four of them grew grim.
Eager to prove himself, Cong Yuanlong stood at the forefront, saber in hand, facing the forest head-on.
"Stay back for now. Just watch me."
Cong Yuanlong declared.
"I hope this doesn’t attract too many demons."
Zhang Chenchen looked worried.
They had arrived late. The scent of the Chaotic God Grass had already spread far and wide. Although they had taken measures to remedy it, she wasn’t sure how effective they would be.
This was a clear example of the disadvantage of being short-handed.
Other Taiping Captains had, at minimum, a dozen Taiping Captains under their command.
But Lin Qi Huan was too lazy and had only recruited a handful of people.
On a normal day, it was manageable. They just had to work a little harder to cover their patrols.
But in a situation like this, they were immediately stretched thin.
Even if they called for reinforcements, the Si Li would have to transfer other Captains from different regions, and they wouldn’t arrive anytime soon.
Zhang Chenchen could only hope things wouldn’t escalate to that point.
"Senior Brother Cong, look out!"
Just then, Zhang Chenchen heard a sudden shout.
Immediately, the flash of a saber grazed past her ear.
A strand of her hair drifted down. The blade’s light streaked like a rainbow, striking the air a foot in front of Cong Yuanlong.
PFFT!
Blood blossomed in the previously empty air, revealing a colorful butterfly half the size of a person.
A thin black line appeared on the butterfly, and its body split in two, falling to the ground with a THUD.
A Phantom Butterfly!
Cong Yuanlong swallowed hard.
The Phantom Butterfly was a Tier One Demon. It wasn’t particularly strong, but it had one special ability: invisibility.
’It got this close without me even noticing? If it had attacked me just now, would I have been able to defend myself?’
A cold sweat broke out on Cong Yuanlong’s back.
Su Mu strode forward and pulled his Thunder Shocking Saber from the ground.
"Senior Brother Cong, perhaps your talents lie more in storming fortifications. Why don’t you let me handle the dirty work?"
Su Mu said with a smile.
Cong Yuanlong laughed awkwardly. "I was careless—"
’I’m not really this weak...’
"I know."
Su Mu grinned, and his Thunder Shocking Saber became a rainbow arc as he slashed behind him.
A sleek, graceful leopard burst from the woods.
CLANG!
Amid the shriek of clashing metal, the Demon Leopard was sent tumbling.
The Demon Leopard’s appearance was like a battle horn, signaling the attack. One after another, demons of all shapes and sizes emerged before the four of them.
They snarled, staring at the four humans, their eyes glowing with a frenzied, vicious light.
WHOOSH!
Su Mu seized the initiative, his Thunder Shocking Saber unleashing a tempest of blows.
A faint golden light shimmered on his skin as the edge of his blade sliced lightly across the Demon Leopard’s neck.
With a nearly inaudible sound, the Demon Leopard’s body continued its high leap, but its head, severed, went tumbling to the ground.
Foul-smelling Demon Blood sprayed out as the leopard’s corpse slammed heavily onto the ground.
Su Mu was already deep within the pack of demons.
Amid the storm of his attacks, the other three could only see Su Mu’s phantom-like figure. Every flicker of movement was answered with a spray of blood.
Not a single demon could withstand a single blow.
A continuous series of THUDS echoed through the air.
It was the sound of demon corpses hitting the ground.
Zhang Chenchen’s eyes were wide, her chest heaving. The sight was breathtaking.
"This—"
While she was still reeling in shock, Luo Anning leaped past her. The longsword in her hand transformed into a rain of fine threads, sinking into a demon.
"Fuck!"
Cong Yuanlong cursed and hastily threw himself at a demon.
If he didn’t get in on the action now, there would be nothing left for him.
By the time Zhang Chenchen came to her senses, the battle was over.
A dozen or so demon corpses littered the ground.
Half of them had been Tier One Demons.
A single Tier One Demon was worth one thousand merit points.
Seven or eight Tier One Demons, plus the remaining unranked ones... ’Killing all of them must be worth at least ten thousand merit points.’
’And ninety percent of those points belong to Su Mu and Luo Anning. I didn’t even get a chance to act.’
Cong Yuanlong, at least, had managed to snag a Tier One Demon from the duo, earning himself a thousand merit points.
"These demons are a lot weaker than I expected," Su Mu said as he sheathed his saber. "Looks like earning a hundred thousand merit points won’t be so hard after all."
Zhang Chenchen was speechless.
Cong Yuanlong was also at a loss for words.
"It isn’t that difficult for *you*, Senior Brother Su. You’re at the Body Tempering Limit, so an ordinary Tier One Demon can barely hurt you. On top of that, you’ve comprehended two different intents. Even if you’ve only undergone eight blood transformations, there aren’t many Tier One Demons that could beat you."
