Chapter 220: Chapter 149: Limit
Those two Tier Three Demons clearly had the same idea.
It was now a test of patience.
Su Mu was like a sniper. Despite the brutal battle raging below, he remained calm, his eyes fixed on the battlefield, with no intention of acting rashly.
"Taiping Captain Meng Tie Peak has slain a Tier Two Demon!"
A white-haired old man roared, hanging the head of a Tier Two Demon from his waist. He swept his greatsword, and the heads of Tier One Demons tumbled to the ground one after another.
"Old Meng, don’t get cocky! Watch this!"
Another old, white-haired Captain leaped high into the air and charged a Tier Two Demon.
For the Taiping Captains, slaying unranked demons, or even Tier One Demons, no longer fazed them in the slightest.
Only a Tier Two Demon was enough to get them a little excited.
Only a Tier Two Demon was worthy of being their trophy.
"Old Huang, take it easy! You’re pushing that old body of yours too hard. Be careful or you’ll leave it here for good."
Wan Qing steadily swung his saber, intercepting a rampaging Tier Two Demon as he reminded his companion.
"Don’t you worry. If an old bastard like you is still kicking, how could I possibly die? This time, I’ll definitely claim more heads than you!"
Ahead, a slightly stooped old man replied without looking back.
His saber had impressively engaged two Tier Two Demons at once.
Zhong Guizheng, Wei Bufan, Luo Anning, and the other Taiping Captains followed closely behind the old Captains, fighting with all their might.
"Kill!"
The soldiers of the Inner City Defense Army, who had initially been reluctant to fight, now had bloodshot eyes.
Seeing the Outer City Martial Artists—who were far inferior in both equipment and strength—relentlessly slaying demons, they knew that if they didn’t kill a few demons themselves, they’d be too ashamed to show their faces.
’We can’t compete with the men from the Taiping Bureau, but are we seriously going to be outdone by the rabble of Outer City Martial Artists?’
’The City Defense Army has its pride, too!’
General Xie was dead. They had to save the last shred of their own dignity.
War cries and demonic roars shook the very heavens.
The white-haired Taiping Captain, Huang Shanzhi, charged at the very front. Three demon heads already hung from his waist.
His saberwork was vicious. Severed demon limbs flew into the air wherever he passed.
Just then, a demon suddenly sprang forth from the horde.
It was incredibly fast, closing the distance to Huang Shanzhi in the blink of an eye.
"I’ve been waiting for you!"
Huang Shanzhi’s eyes flashed. With a cold bark, the light from his saber flared as he slashed out.
CLANG!
The demon’s claw struck the edge of his blade with a sharp ring.
The sharp saber snapped in two. The demon’s claw, without the slightest pause, continued its descent toward Huang Shanzhi’s chest.
Wan Qing and the others roared in fury, but the demon was simply too fast. They had no time to intervene.
BOOM!
Huang Shanzhi’s body was sent flying like a kite with a snapped string, swatted away by the demon’s claw.
The silver-threaded "Tai" character embroidered on his chest suddenly flared with a blinding light before quickly dimming.
Huang Shanzhi was thrown back several dozen yards. A deep gash was torn across his chest, revealing the bone beneath.
But thanks to his Taiping Captain’s uniform absorbing part of the attack’s force, he was spared from being disemboweled.
Even so, he wasn’t out of danger yet.
The demon was on him like a shadow, looming over him as it swiped its claw down once more.
The attacks from Wan Qing and the others all missed, landing where the demon had just been. They couldn’t keep up with its movements at all.
A look of grim determination flashed across Huang Shanzhi’s face.
His uniform was damaged; it couldn’t protect him a second time. He knew he wouldn’t be able to block another hit.
’If that’s the case, then I’ll use my life to create an opening for Su the kid to strike!’
Still in mid-air, Huang Shanzhi gathered his remaining strength, preparing to throw his body around the demon’s descending claw.
WHOOSH!
Just then, a piercing whistle cut through the air.
A streak of blood-red light shot forth at an incredible speed.
The blood-red light, wreathed in five-colored flames, flew right past Huang Shanzhi’s face, its searing heat singeing his white hair.
It all happened in a flash.
The demon pursuing Huang Shanzhi let out a roar and tried to dodge aside.
By this time, Wan Qing and the others had already closed in.
Several saber flashes slashed down, blocking its path of retreat.
BOOM!
The demon roared as its body suddenly swelled, inflating in an instant to the size of a small hill.
Wan Qing and the others were all sent flying by the impact.
Huang Shanzhi slammed heavily onto the ground and rolled several times, narrowly avoiding being crushed into a pulp by the now-enormous Tier Three Demon.
Although the Tier Three Demon had sent the old Taiping Captains flying, the blood-red arrow had already struck its claw with perfect accuracy.
"AWOOOO!"
The Tier Three Demon shrieked in agony. Without a moment’s hesitation, it swung its other claw and hacked off the limb pierced by the arrow.
The severed limb fell to the ground and was instantly incinerated into black ash by the five-colored flames.
A flicker of fear appeared in the Tier Three Demon’s eyes.
Although it had lost a limb, it had at least avoided being incinerated by the five-colored flames and saved its own life.
Just as a sense of relief washed over it, it once again heard that piercing whistle.
The second blood-red arrow was already upon it.
The Tier Three Demon roared, whipping up a furious gale.
It yanked other demons through the air, pulling them in front of it as a shield.
PFFT!
PFFT!
PFFT!
The arrow pierced through demon after demon, giving the Tier Three Demon a chance to dodge.
Finally, the blood-red arrow grazed its shoulder and flew past, plunging into the demon horde and erupting in a ball of five-colored flames.
The Tier Three Demon glanced at its scraped shoulder, a strangely human-like expression on its face.
’Two arrows!’
’That human Martial Artist on the wall is only in the Blood Transformation Realm. He can’t possibly fire such a powerful Profound Weapon many times.’
’Three times, at most!’
A savage glint appeared in the Tier Three Demon’s eyes. Kicking up a gale, it lunged toward the top of the wall.
On the city wall, Su Mu remained expressionless.
Watching the Tier Three Demon leap high into the air, he once again drew the Five Flames Heaven-Shaking Bow.
’To go airborne within my line of sight... Is it underestimating my archery?’
A sharp light flickered in Su Mu’s pupils. The demon’s enormous body was reflected in his eyes, filling his vision.
[Martial Art: Archery (Perfection)]
For this very moment, in the days after killing Xie Zuowen, he had poured all the Points he’d gained into archery, raising it directly to the Realm of Perfection.
’With the power of the Five Flames Heaven-Shaking Bow combined with my Perfection Realm archery, if I miss this shot, I’ll eat the damn bow!’
BOOM!
The blood-red arrow, wreathed in five-colored flames, appeared almost instantly before the Tier Three Demon.
Just then, a cunning glint flashed in the Tier Three Demon’s eyes.
Suddenly, from the ground below, dozens of demons shot into the air, arriving in front of the Tier Three Demon in the blink of an eye and intercepting the blood-red arrow.
The dozens of demons were flailing wildly; they clearly hadn’t flown up on their own but had been hurled into the air by some force.
At that moment, with a tremendous rumble, the other Tier Three Demon finally revealed itself.
It was the one that had hurled dozens of demons into the air to block the arrow from the Five Flames Heaven-Shaking Bow for its companion.
The two Tier Three Demons were actually working together, and their coordination was flawless.
They were using this method to deplete Su Mu’s stamina!
’That’s three arrows!’
The two Tier Three Demons let out excited roars in unison.
Last time, after firing three arrows, the human had gone quiet and stopped attacking them.
’This human’s limit is three arrows.’
’Now that he’s fired his three arrows, who can possibly stop us?’
The two Tier Three Demons paid no mind to the dozens of their own kind that had been blasted apart in mid-air by the arrow.
They charged the top of the wall from two different directions simultaneously.
A sharp glint flashed in Su Mu’s eyes.
’Tier Three Demons really are clever. They’re even judging my limits based on past encounters.’
’Too bad for them, a demon is still a demon. They don’t understand that a lot can change in just a few days.’
’The limit they’re basing this on was my limit several days ago.’
’Not my limit now.’
’The last one to make that mistake was Xie Zuowen.’
Instead of retreating, Su Mu stepped forward. A faint golden light emanated from his skin as he smeared a drop of blood from his fingertip onto the bowstring.
TWANG!
To a sound like the stirring pluck of a pipa string, Su Mu drew his bow into a full moon.
