Cultivation: I Can Traverse Otherworlds

Chapter 263 - 234: Breaking the Formation

An auspicious cloud streaked across the sky, leaving a faint white trail in its wake. At times, it would burst through the cloud cover, pulling wisps of vapor that rippled behind it.

「A few days later.」

SWOOSH!

The Tunneling Light came to a halt in midair.

Yann Nanshuang flipped her hand over to reveal a Compass. With a flick of her finger, countless rays of rosy light surged forth from it.

The rosy light formed a giant Compass in the sky. Inside, the cardinal points spun and shifted, aligning with celestial coordinates in a wondrous and mysterious display.

Before long.

"Grand-uncle."

She pointed southeast.

"A little more in that direction."

"Alright."

Yann Huachang waved his sleeve. The auspicious cloud beneath their feet silently billowed, carrying them straight in the direction she had indicated.

"A bit more to the east... now south..."

"We’re here!"

The auspicious cloud came to a halt in midair.

Zhu Ju gazed at their surroundings. The vast expanse of the sea was empty, save for a few lonely seabirds soaring high above.

"Here?" Before he could speak, Zhangg Chengyun asked in surprise,

"Underwater?"

"No." Yann Nanshuang shook her head, her face lit with excitement.

"It’s right here on the surface. It’s an Illusion Array!"

"Without Le Mei’s Treasure Map, we would have never found an Illusion Array this convincing."

"My turn." Le Mei gave a charming smile, stepping forward into the empty air and tossing an object downward.

SHIMMER...

The object she threw, shaped like a bowl, flipped over in midair. A sheet of golden light instantly erupted from within it.

VMMMM!

The very air trembled.

It was like ripples spreading on the surface of water.

Under the golden light’s glow, an island dozens of acres in size slowly materialized upon the once-empty surface of the sea.

The island was shrouded in a faint mist, obscuring everything on it from view.

"Years ago, a caravan of sea merchants passed through here and stumbled upon the island hidden within the Illusion Array. They couldn’t breach it to get inside, so they just recorded its location," Le Mei explained with a smile.

"By a stroke of luck, the Nautical Chart with its location eventually fell into the hands of a Le Family ancestor and has been passed down to this day."

The Le Family also tried to break the Array to search for any potential treasures inside.

Unfortunately,

after years of fruitless effort, all they managed to create was a Revealing Bowl, which only served to prove that there was indeed an island concealed by an Array here.

So they decided to give the Treasure Map to the Yann Family. This way, they could still get a share of the spoils after the Array was broken.

"Indeed," Yann Huachang nodded, his voice deep.

"Decades ago, when Yunjing Island passed this way, I brought a team here myself. Unfortunately, we only managed to detect the Array. We couldn’t crack it in the time we had, so I decided to leave it for another day."

"How fortunate!"

A smile spread across his face.

"Decades have passed, and now that Yunjing Island has returned to this area, we have finally found a way to break the Array."

"It’s all thanks to Nanshuang and Little Friend Zhu."

"Grand-uncle," Yann Nanshuang smiled.

"I was just doing my part."

"So that’s why the Elemental Prohibition Ring Miss Yann had me refine was so peculiar," Zhu Ju sighed. "It all makes sense now."

"Today has been a real eye-opener."

The long lifespans of Cultivators manifested in many ways.

Take treasure hunting, for example.

A Dao Foundation Cultivator could spend decades waiting for the right moment—an entire lifetime for a Mortal.

"Let’s begin!"

Yann Xi took a deep breath. With a wave of his long sleeves, dozens of ten-foot-long Array Flags shot out like lightning in all directions.

The Array Flags fanned out over a radius of several miles, hovering in midair in a specific pattern as Spiritual Light coursed between them.

"Yin Yang Mirror, activate!"

At Yann Xi’s shout, the Array’s Spiritual Light flared, instantly enveloping the surrounding sea.

From the inside looking out,

it was as if a transparent dome covered the entire scene.

From the outside looking in,

the air rippled like water and seemed to be covered in countless mirror shards, reflecting the surroundings.

Once the Array stabilized, the area appeared completely empty, the group having vanished from sight.

"Breaking the Array is bound to cause a commotion. Even though no one is around, we must take precautions."

Yann Xi explained, wiping sweat from his brow. He then gestured to the others.

"It’s done."

"Now, even if we turn this place upside down, no one will detect anything out of the ordinary."

Zhu Ju grew thoughtful.

’The Yann Family built its reputation on Arrays. Most of their Dao Foundation Cultivators are proficient in them, and Yann Xi is no exception.’

’But,’

’something doesn’t add up.’

’Mastering Arrays is incredibly time-consuming and draining. Usually, an Array Master’s Cultivation level isn’t very high.’

’Take the Yann Family’s Guest Minister, Master Tang, for example. He’s a Tier Two High Grade Array Master, but his Cultivation is only at the Early Stage Dao Foundation.’

’Yet Yann Xi is at the Mid-Stage Dao Foundation.’

’Yann Nanshuang is also quite powerful. It’s as if studying Arrays doesn’t hinder their Cultivation at all.’

’Perhaps the rumors are true—the Yann Family’s legacy Cultivation Technique must allow them to use their insights into Arrays to aid their Cultivation. The greater their mastery of Arrays, the higher their Cultivation soars!’

WHOOSH...

Yann Nanshuang stepped forward. Spiritual Light flared in her beautiful eyes as her hands wove through a complex series of Spells. She then thrust her palms downward.

"Yin and Yang reversed, Heaven and Earth inverted!"

"Go!"

SWOOSH!

Seven jet-black spikes shot out like lightning, plunging into the Array below. It was as if they had struck a venomous snake at its most vital point.

Zhu Ju could sense that the Array below, which had been in constant flux, had suddenly frozen in place.

’It seems the Yann Family prepared other tools besides the Elemental Prohibition Ring I made.’

"Three Talents, Four Symbols, return to your places! Five Elements, Eight Trigrams, suppress the world!"

Yann Nanshuang silently chanted the Spell. Her hand seals changed rapidly as she sent streams of light shooting downward.

Then, at a precise moment.

"Go!"

A ring flew from her hand, slamming violently into the Array below.

"Seize!"

The Elemental Prohibition Ring hovered in midair, its surface glowing with a fine web of Spiritual Light as it slowly began to merge with the Array below.

Once fully merged, the Elemental Prohibition Ring trembled and split, sending a smaller ring shooting downward.

This process repeated itself.

In total, five rings pierced the Array.

Sweat beaded on Yann Nanshuang’s forehead. She sat cross-legged in the air to recover, saying,

"The Elemental Prohibition Rings are now embedded within. We just need to wait for the right moment to detonate them and destroy the Array."

"I’ve made the calculations."

"An opportunity is certain to arise within three days."

"Then we’ll wait," Yann Huachang said, his expression impassive.

"We’ve already waited decades. What’s a few more days?"

"Fellow Daoist Zhangg, what is your assessment? Are there Treasures within the Array below?"

There was a reason the group consisted of five people. Yann Huachang, a Late-Stage Dao Foundation Great Cultivator, was the pillar of their strength.

Yann Nanshuang was in charge of breaking the Array, while Yann Xi stood guard.

The three members from the Yann Family were there to ensure their interests were protected.

Le Mei had provided the Treasure Map, so her presence was a given. Zhu Ju was there to make sure the Elemental Prohibition Ring functioned correctly; if any issues arose, he would be needed to fix them.

And Zhangg Chengyun was a master of various Miscellaneous Techniques, which would be useful after the Array was broken.

"Definitely!"

Zhangg Chengyun nodded emphatically.

"Without a doubt."

"This Array doesn’t completely isolate the island from the outside world. Any Spiritual Medicine growing there would be at least a thousand years old."

"And if there are any that are several millennia old..."

"Their value would be no less than a Core Formation Spiritual Object!"

At these words, everyone’s eyes widened. Yann Huachang’s breath even hitched, a flush creeping over his face.

"A Core Formation Spiritual Object..."

’What a shame!’

’The Fang Family still refuses to part with that Profound Ice Flame. Otherwise, Second Brother could already be attempting his Core Formation.’

Time trickled by.

Then, at a precise moment,

CRACK!

The Elemental Prohibition Rings suddenly let out a sharp crack.

Yann Nanshuang, who had been meditating, snapped her eyes open. The Spiritual Light around her flared as True Essence surged from her body.

"Greedy Wolf Devouring the Moon, Seven Kills and Army Breaker!"

"Detonate!"

Driven by her True Essence, the Elemental Prohibition Rings trembled violently before instantly disintegrating into countless tiny components that shot out in all directions.

Each tiny component burst with blinding Spiritual Light.

BOOM!

A deafening roar echoed out.

The sea below erupted, sending a monstrous wave surging a thousand feet into the air before it crashed back down.

RUMBLE...

For miles around, the sea was in utter chaos.

After a long while,

the wind and waves subsided.

A lone island came into view, a great tree standing at its very center.

"The Array is broken!"

"To the island!"

Yann Huachang’s eyes glinted. He landed cautiously on the island, his gaze scrutinizing the great tree.

"It’s a Fire Spirit Jujube Tree!" Zhangg Chengyun exclaimed, his face alight with ecstasy.

"This tree grows three inches every decade and only bears fruit once a millennium. Judging by its height, this one must be nearly ten thousand years old! A shame it isn’t the season for fruit."

"If it bore fruit, a single one could save an Innate Qi Refiner ten years of hard Cultivation. It’s a true treasure."

And once it passes the ten-thousand-year mark...

it becomes something else entirely!

Any random branch could be refined into a High Grade Spiritual Artifact, and its heartwood could yield several Magical Treasures.

This tree alone makes the entire trip worthwhile!

"It’s not that it’s not the right time for fruit," Yann Nanshuang said, shaking her head.

"This tree is the Array Hub. Most of its Spirituality was channeled into maintaining the Array, making it impossible for it to bear any Spirit Fruit."

"Look at the ground. You won’t even find a single fallen pit."

"There’s a body over here!" Le Mei called out excitedly as she landed on the other side of the tree.

"And there are a few items on it."

Indeed, beneath the Fire Spirit Jujube Tree lay a skeleton, prone on the ground with one hand outstretched, touching the tree’s roots.

On the skeleton lay a sword, a ruler, and a Jade Bracelet.

This Array has existed for at least a millennium. For the skeleton to remain intact after all this time, its owner must have been incredibly powerful in life.

At least a Late-Stage Dao Foundation Cultivator.

Or perhaps even,

a Golden Core expert!

And for the items on the body to still emit a faint Spiritual Light after countless ages, their quality must also be extraordinary.

SWOOSH!

Yann Huachang extended his hand. The items flew into his palm. An almost imperceptible expression flickered across his face before he flipped his hand and tucked the items into his storage bag.

"How strange."

"Why is the body in this position?"

He was clearly trying to change the subject. The others, though resentful, could only suppress their curiosity.

It was clear the Yann Family had no intention of sharing those items.

"I initially thought this Array was meant to guard a Cave Mansion, but now I’m not so sure," Yann Nanshuang mused.

"It might have been designed to trap this person."

"And this person was trying to destroy the Array Hub, which explains their final posture—one hand reaching for the root. Wait... there’s something strange about this skeleton."

"You’re right," Zhu Ju nodded.

"The skull is missing a few bones."

He had a thorough understanding of human anatomy and had noticed the anomaly at first glance.

"Maybe..."

"It’s not human?"

"Of course it’s human," Zhangg Chengyun shook his head. He squatted down, wiping dust from the ground and muttering,

"Array Patterns?"

WHOOSH...

A light breeze swept away the dust, revealing a complex set of Array Patterns on the ground.

"I’ve never seen an Array like this," Yann Nanshuang’s eyes lit up.

"Does it have something to do with space?"

Arrays involving space were at least Tier Three.

"It’s related to the Divine Soul," Zhu Ju said, his eyes flickering with hesitation.

"A Magic Altar to draw down the Power of the Stars?"

"What Magic Altar?" Yann Nanshuang tilted her head.

"It’s nothing," Zhu Ju shook his head.

"I must be overthinking things."

"Enough," Yann Huachang said.

"Make a copy of the Array Patterns and transplant the Spirit Tree. Let the bones rest here in peace. We’re heading back."

"Everyone..."

A smile touched his lips.

"Thank you all for your assistance on this journey. The Yann Family will reward you generously upon our return. However, we ask that you do not speak of today’s events to anyone. When we get back, we’ll need you all to sign a Spirit Contract."

"Of course," Zhangg Chengyun was the first to reply. He had just come along for the ride; why would he turn down free benefits?

"The Yann Family must be blessed by the heavens to have acquired a ten-thousand-year-old Spiritual Plant. I’m sure you will produce a Golden Core Grandmaster in the future."

"Haha..." Yann Huachang boomed with laughter.

"Let’s hope your auspicious words come true, Fellow Daoist."

"Hm?"

Before the words were out of his mouth, his expression changed abruptly. With a wave of his sleeve, a band of Spiritual Light enveloped Yann Xi and Yann Nanshuang as he flashed into the sky.

"Who’s there?"

The air shimmered, and several figures materialized one after another.

"Tsk, tsk..." one of them clucked their tongue. "I told you the Yann Family could break the Array here, but you didn’t believe me. I bet you’ve learned something today, eh?"

Recognizing the newcomer, Yann Huachang’s face fell. He gritted his teeth and spat out the name, "Mourning Ghost Huan Chao!"

"The South Sea Cave Ghosts!"

"The very same," the cultivator holding a strange banner across from them grinned.

"I’m surprised you still remember me after we met just once decades ago, you old fossil."
