Yuan entered the tunnel shortly afterward, with the Scorpion Squad following close behind.
At first glance, the tunnel looked no different from the ones he had explored before. However, the deeper they ventured, the more apparent the differences became. The passage gradually widened, and before long, it branched into two separate paths.
"Which way do we go?" Yuan asked Captain Chen. "I’ve never seen tunnels branch like this before."
"I’m not surprised. This only happens in the Purple Zone," Captain Chen replied.
"As for which path to take... it doesn’t really matter. Well, it does, but they all eventually lead to the same destination. The only difference is what you’ll encounter along the way. Some paths have far more Void Specters than others, while some have tougher ones. Of course, if you’re unlucky, it could be both."
They hadn’t encountered a single Void Specter up to this point, but Yuan had a feeling that would change very soon.
Without giving much thought to it, Yuan picked the right path.
The Scorpion Squad didn’t say anything and quietly followed.
As expected, it didn’t take long before they encountered their first Void Specter.
However, even without engaging it, Yuan could tell at a glance that this Void Specter was vastly different from any he had encountered before, including those roaming the Purple Zone outside.
Not only did it emit a unique aura unlike the others, but its form was also far more humanoid.
’An Elite Void Specter!’
The members of the Scorpion Squad cried inwardly the moment they saw the Void Specter. There was only one, yet its mere presence sent chills down their spines.
Elite Void Specters were, as their name implied, the elite among Void Specters. Although they were not as powerful as Void Guardians, they were still exceedingly difficult to deal with in their own right due to their speed and high durability.
Under normal circumstances, encountering an Elite Void Specter—especially as their first encounter—would be considered incredibly unlucky.
However, given their current circumstances, the Scorpion Squad couldn’t help but rejoice at Yuan’s misfortune, seeing it as a stroke of good luck for themselves.
’To think we’d encounter an Elite Void Specter so soon! The heavens must also want to see this guy dead as much as we do!’ Captain Chen laughed inwardly.
"Good luck, Corporal Yuan."
Captain Chen said, not even bothering to explain to Yuan what he was facing.
"Hmm..."
Rather than fighting it immediately, Yuan examined the Elite Void Specter from afar.
"What’s wrong? Cold feet?" Captain Dung asked when Yuan did not move after moments of stillness.
"No, I was just thinking that my minigun won’t be effective on it," Yuan calmly remarked.
Despite his near-limitless reserves of energy, Yuan’s cultivation was still lacking, which meant there was only so much power he could draw from Limitless at once.
His minigun was devastating against large groups and could shred through them with ease, but only because the strength of his Limitless was sufficient to overwhelm them; hence why it took him several minutes of nonstop attacking to defeat the Void Guardian during his first gathering mission.
"Then how are you going to fight it? With your fists?" Captain Chen inquired with a puzzled face.
"Nope."
Yuan raised his minigun toward the Elite Void Specter, raising the others’ eyebrows.
"I thought you said it wasn’t going to be effective," Captain Chen remarked.
"Correct, but that doesn’t mean it won’t work. I also want to test out its limits."
Yuan’s words left them speechless, as nobody would be foolish enough to test the capabilities of an Elite Void Specter if they knew about it. However, they kept quiet, and moments later, Yuan began firing a barrage of Limitless bullets at the Elite Void Specter.
"Oh?" Yuan muttered in surprise a few seconds later.
Although his bullets initially struck their target, the Elite Void Specter began evading them the moment it realized it was under attack.
Yuan immediately increased his output, but that only worked for several bullets before the Elite Void Specter adapted to it and began evading them perfectly again.
Soon, the Elite Void Specter was right in front of Yuan, and it swung its scythe-like arms at him.
’Die!’ Captain Chen prayed inwardly.
However, Yuan used Void Manipulation and avoided the attack with ease.
"Looks like this weapon won’t work on you..."
Without hesitation, Yuan dropped the minigun and proceeded to raise two fingers.
The members of Scorpion Squad were puzzled by his actions, wondering if he really intended on fighting the Elite Void Specter with his hands.
When the Elite Void Specter attacked again half a second later, Limitless suddenly surged from Yuan’s hands. However, instead of dispersing in every direction like an unrestrained aura, the energy condensed into a distinct shape—a sword.
Sha!
Before the members of the Scorpion Squad could even comprehend what they had witnessed, the Elite Void Specter abruptly froze in front of Yuan.
A split second later, dozens of cuts appeared across its body before it dispersed into the air like smoke.
"W-What just happened?!" Captain Chen exclaimed in shock, turning to the others for an explanation.
However, the others shook their heads, as none of them saw what Yuan did just now.
Meanwhile, Yuan quickly absorbed the Eternal Essence left behind by the Elite Void Specter.
’That was about a hundred million years’ worth of Eternal Essence! Although not as much as a Void Guardian, it’s still plenty!’ Yuan thought to himself.
A moment later, Yuan turned to the Scorpion Squad and said, "Alright, let’s keep going."
They nodded in a dazed manner before quietly following him.
However, one of the members could not contain her curiosity and asked, "Um... what did you do to that Void Specter just now?"
"What does it look like I did?" Yuan replied with a question of his own.
"I’m asking because I don’t know! Your movements were too fast just now, and I couldn’t see anything!" she snapped, clearly irritated at having to admit that she had failed to follow his movements.
