Chapter 261: Chapter 261

The pillar of divine light faded above the Pleasure Quarter, leaving Ishtar’s main house dark and painfully quiet.

Every woman bearing her Falna felt the change at once.

The blessing remained engraved across their backs, but the living connection behind it had vanished.

Strength that had once answered instinctively now felt distant, locked behind a door only another god could open.

Phryne understood before most of them did.

She strained against Omokagechō’s paper bindings, but her weakened body barely moved beneath Nejibana’s water.

"No! Lady Ishtar wouldn’t leave me here!"

Aisha stood over her with the broken edge of her sword pointed at her throat.

"She didn’t leave you. She was sent back to Heaven because you helped destroy everything she built!"

Phryne’s face twisted with panic.

"Release me, Aisha! I am still the strongest captain in this Familia! We can rebuild the houses, recover the women, and force the Guild to recognize—"

"There is no Ishtar Familia anymore!"

Aisha’s shout cut through the archive.

The gathered Amazons stared at her, many still struggling to accept what had happened.

Aisha looked at them one by one.

"Ishtar is gone. Her contracts are destroyed, her authority over the Quarter has ended, and nobody here is obligated to obey Phryne ever again!"

Phryne thrashed harder.

"I gave orders before you were strong enough to lift that sword! You do not decide what happens to me!"

Belka leaned against Omokagechō, too exhausted to stand without its support.

"No. The women named in the punishment ledgers decide what happens to you."

Phryne stared at the strips of paper surrounding the Zanpakutō.

Hundreds of names remained written across them.

Some belonged to women already fleeing toward the eastern road.

Others were gathering outside the main house, waiting for proof that Phryne could no longer reach them.

A frightened murmur rose from the stairs as the first former workers entered the archive.

Mina came with Airmid supporting her.

Marta followed behind them, her face pale and one hand gripping the doorway hard enough to whiten her knuckles.

Phryne’s anger faltered.

Marta saw her lying on the floor and stopped breathing.

Belka pushed away from Omokagechō long enough to reach her.

"She cannot touch you."

Marta did not look away from Phryne.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

Belka’s voice nearly broke.

"For once, I am completely sure."

Marta walked forward.

Every step shook.

Phryne bared her teeth.

"You should have stayed hidden! I remember what happened the last time you tried to run."

Marta flinched, but Aisha moved between them before fear could send her back toward the stairs.

"You will never speak to her like that again."

Phryne laughed weakly.

"You think losing my Falna makes me harmless?"

Aisha drove her boot down on Phryne’s injured wrist.

The laughter became a scream.

"No. I think being surrounded by witnesses makes you finished."

Shakti entered the archive with six Ganesha Familia officers behind her.

Heavy restraints hung from two of their belts, while another carried a sealed evidence chest.

Her gaze moved over the destroyed ledgers, the broken foundation stones, and Phryne trapped beneath three different restraints.

"This district is now under emergency Guild protection. Phryne Jamil will be taken into custody pending charges of kidnapping, assault, unlawful confinement, falsification of contracts, and murder."

Phryne spat blood toward her boots.

"You cannot judge an Amazon for disciplining members of her own Familia!"

Shakti did not react.

"Your goddess is gone, the Familia has been dissolved, and more than sixty witnesses are waiting outside. You can explain your definition of discipline in court."

The officers approached carefully.

Ardi kept Nejibana’s water wrapped around Phryne’s legs while Aisha and Kaguya removed their blades one at a time.

Omokagechō’s paper restraints remained until iron cuffs had locked around Phryne’s wrists, elbows, ankles, and neck.

Even without an active Falna, it took all six officers to lift her.

Phryne screamed at the women lining the stairs.

"You think this is freedom?! The moment the Guild gets tired of protecting you, every creditor in Orario will come back! You will beg for Ishtar before the week ends!"

Nobody answered.

Marta stepped aside as the officers dragged Phryne past her.

Then she reached out and slapped her.

The sound cracked through the archive.

Phryne stared at her in disbelief.

Marta’s whole body shook, but she did not retreat.

"That was for the first night."

Another woman stepped forward and struck Phryne across the mouth.

"That was for Mina."

A third spat in her face.

"For Ren."

Shakti raised one hand before the crowd could become a beating.

"She will answer for all of it. Do not let her turn your first free decision into something she can use against you."

The women moved aside.

Phryne was carried up the stairs beneath their silence.

...

By sunrise, every Ishtar banner had been removed from the Pleasure Quarter.

Some were torn down by former workers.

Others were folded and stored by women who could not yet bring themselves to destroy the symbol of the only home they had known.

No one was forced to choose immediately.

The women who wanted to leave gathered near the eastern road, where Ganesha Familia recorded destinations and provided escorts without asking for repayment.

Those who wished to stay returned to their houses.

The doors remained open.

Belka stood inside the former main hall while Sabra spread blank account books across a table that had once held ownership contracts.

The goddess’s throne had been carried outside and broken apart for firewood.

Sabra stared at the empty space it left behind.

"We still need food deliveries, guards, healers, wages, rent agreements, and someone willing to explain to the Guild that destroying our accounting system did not destroy the need for accounting."

Belka lowered herself into a chair.

"Please stop saying responsible things. I have not slept in two days, and my sword keeps reminding me whenever someone cries three streets away."

Omokagechō rested against the wall beside her.

Its released form had returned to a sealed Zanpakutō shortly after Phryne was taken away, though Belka could still sense the names it had accepted.

Sabra opened the first blank book.

"What should we call the new contracts?"

"Employment agreements."

"That sounds suspiciously ordinary."

"Good! Ordinary people get paid, resign when they want, and complain about management without being sold to another building."

Aisha entered carrying a stack of applications from several gods who had already offered to accept former Ishtar members into their Familias.

She dropped them onto the table.

"Most of these are useless. Three gods want exclusive control over the houses, one demanded half the district’s income, and another offered to ’protect’ every unmarried Amazon personally."

Belka looked at the pile.

"Burn that one."

"I already did."

Sabra pushed a blank page toward Aisha.

"The Quarter needs someone to coordinate its guards until the Guild approves a permanent structure."

Aisha did not sit.

"No."

Belka raised an eyebrow.

"No?"

"I will protect the district while it stabilizes, but I will not become another Ishtar. Every house chooses its own representative, and those representatives decide how the streets are managed."

Sabra studied her.

"That will be slower."

"It will also make it harder for one person to own everyone by next week."

Belka smiled despite her exhaustion.

"Congratulations. You have discovered committees."

Aisha groaned.

"I would rather fight Phryne again."

"You say that now. Wait until the southern kitchen and western reception argue over cleaning expenses."

Aisha’s expression finally softened.

The laugh that escaped her was tired, rough, and real.

...

Rayleigh left the Pleasure Quarter shortly after noon.

He had spent the morning helping Welf remove the remaining enchanted locks, checking Cala’s arm at Airmid’s clinic, and making certain Benihime’s changes to Phryne would fade only after reinforced restraints had been prepared.

By the time he reached home, every muscle in his body felt heavier than the swords across his back.

The front door opened before he touched it.

Nira stood on the other side.

She had clearly been waiting for hours.

"Is it over?"

Rayleigh removed his shoes and leaned Benihime against the wall.

"Ishtar is back in Heaven. Phryne is in custody, and the Familia has been dissolved."

Nira searched his face.

"Marta?"

"Free."

Her breath caught.

"Suki and Ren?"

"Both free. Suki decided to stay in the southern house as a paid worker. Ren is leaving Orario with two friends once the roads are clear."

Nira covered her mouth.

For a moment, no sound came out.

Then she grabbed Rayleigh and buried her face against his chest.

"They’re alive!"

Rayleigh held her carefully.

"Yes."

"She said nobody ever came back for us!"

"Belka did."

Nira began crying harder.

Rayleigh felt someone watching from the hall.

Alfia stood there with her arms folded, wearing a plain dark dress and an expression that would have frightened anyone who did not know her.

Her eyes moved over the cut on Rayleigh’s cheek, the dried blood beneath his collar, and the exhaustion he was trying badly to hide.

"You used Bankai?"

"No."

"Benihime’s power then?"

"Twice."

"You froze a contract network connected to hundreds of people, dismantled a divine covenant, altered a Level Five’s muscular coordination, and sent a goddess back to Heaven."

Rayleigh glanced down at Nira.

"When you list it like that, it sounds excessive."

"It was excessive."

Alfia crossed the room and pressed two fingers against his wrist.

Her expression sharpened at his pulse.

"You are going to bed."

"I need to check the forge."

"You are going to bed before I break both legs and remove the decision."

Nira laughed through her tears.

Rayleigh sighed.

"Fine."

Alfia took his coat before he could argue further.

The red thread between their souls carried her anger, worry, and relief far more clearly than her face ever would.

Rayleigh reached the first stair when someone hammered on the front door.

Alfia opened it.

Merek stood outside covered in dust, blood, and black stone powder.

He could barely breathe.

"The Daedalus Orb is moving!"

Rayleigh’s exhaustion vanished from his face.

Merek grabbed the doorframe.

"Valletta found it."
