Chapter 416: The Hand from Mihos II

---

He went on, voice quiet enough to be dangerous. "A lesser opponent would have folded under the first pressure line. He did not. A better-supported opponent would have dragged this longer and dirtier. He did not." His eyes narrowed slightly. "That means Sekhmet is neither merely lucky nor merely protected. He is choosing correctly under pressure."

The butler inclined his head once.

The dark-clothed man remained still.

The armored woman watched Mihos with the kind of attention mercenaries and hunters used when deciding whether a contract was worth the blood it would cost.

Mihos set the untouched cup aside.

"Dickoff is a fool."

This time, no one needed to pretend uncertainty.

"He cannot overcome difficulty once the field stops flattering him. Iron House has become more useful as a warning than as a partner."

The dark-clothed man finally spoke. "Then why save it."

Mihos looked at him.

"Because I do not reward a victory that was not supposed to happen."

That settled the question.

He turned his gaze to the armored woman.

"You will go in."

Not a request.

She answered without hesitation. "To hold or to cut."

Interesting.

Good phrasing.

Mihos liked competence in small doses.

"To hold first," he said. "Iron House must not collapse this week. Not because I value it so highly, but because Sekhmet must not be permitted the shape of clean momentum."

The woman nodded once.

"And if holding fails."

Her eyes did not change.

"Then cut where he trusts."

Now the dark-clothed man spoke again. "House staff. Trade routes. Contracts."

Mihos’s mouth moved faintly. "Perhaps."

He was thinking larger than that already.

Not a frontal strike.

Not yet.

If Sekhmet had built his current advantage through speed and selective pressure, then the answer was not always to hit the same points harder. Sometimes the answer was to introduce uncertainty. One missing person. One wrong rumor. One ally who turned at the wrong hour. One door left open. One victory was so expensive that it started looking like pride instead of control.

Mihos hated losing.

He quietly hated it.

That made it worse.

"Go to Dickoff first," he told the woman. "Stabilize what can still be used. Then judge where Dawn House can be made to bleed in ways that do not look connected until too late."

The woman bowed her head once.

The dark-clothed man said, "And if Sekhmet proves sharper than expected again."

Mihos looked beyond them, toward the city hidden under night.

"Then I become less polite."

That answer was enough.

They withdrew not long after.

The butler stayed.

Of course he did.

Mihos returned to the open report and tore one corner from it without apparent reason before letting the piece fall.

"He is embarrassing Iron House."

The butler did not soften the truth. "Yes."

Mihos’s expression remained perfectly composed.

That was never a good sign.

"Then let him enjoy it for one more night."

Back at Dawn House, that same night had thickened into the hour where even the busy parts of a great estate began narrowing themselves into essentials. Fewer footsteps now. Fewer doors. Lower voices. A deeper kind of quiet.

Sekhmet finally left the strategy room.

He did not go to bed.

Instead he walked the inner corridors slowly enough to think and quickly enough that no servant would mistake the movement for wandering. Lamps cast long gold pools across stone and wood. Once he passed Vera in the hallway outside the inner stair. She stopped, bowed, and studied his face with the small sharpness of someone trying to decide whether tonight was dangerous in a way she needed to prepare for.

"Master."

He looked at her. "Where is Lily."

"In your room earlier," Vera said. "Now with Vela in the east sitting room."

Good.

That meant she was not asleep.

It also meant she was not pacing alone.

Useful.

He nodded once and kept moving.

He did not go to them yet.

Not because he did not want to.

Because tonight his thoughts still needed shape before he let them touch anyone else.

Old myths. New bloodlines. Mihos adjusting. Sofia and Natasha waiting. Leaf beginning a kingdom in the Void Land. Vampire Creation needing to rise. Too many lines. Too many future problems. Too many useful ones.

Interesting.

Troublesome.

But not overwhelming.

Not even close.

The difference between weak men and strong ones was not the number of problems they had. It was whether the weight of those problems changed the shape of their spine.

Sekhmet’s did not bend.

He turned at the far corridor window and looked out over the darker line of the estate walls. Beyond them, the city held its own pockets of light and shadow. Somewhere out there, Iron House was trying not to die. Somewhere farther still, Mihos was deciding whether subtlety still amused him. Somewhere under his own feet, hidden from all of them, Leaf’s Bloodlands patch was pushing roots into dead land and teaching the Void Land how to become dangerous in an entirely new direction.

Good.

Let everything grow.

He would cut what needed cutting later.

By the time he finally moved away from the window, the night had fully taken the sky. Dawn House did not sleep. Mihos’s camp did not sleep. Iron House probably did not dare sleep well at all.

And between them all, Sekhmet’s quiet decision remained exactly where he had left it.

He would not touch the old blood throne.

He would build his own line first.

Then, when the time came, the world could explain to him why it thought he should wear anything more than the power he had already taken with his own hands.

A few moments later...

Sekhmet’s chamber was quiet when he finally entered it.

Not empty.

Quiet.

There was a difference.

The lamps had been lowered, leaving the room in soft gold and long shadow. The night beyond the window pressed against the glass, dark and patient. Somewhere far away in the estate, a guard’s boot touched a stone and moved on. Somewhere below, the house continued breathing in its controlled way, sharp even in silence.
