Death Flag System: I Became An Extra From The Author Who Killed Me!
Chapter 158: Help A FriendThe group from Arthur’s counseling session chatted among themselves, catching up on what they had been doing over the past few days.
As for Kash, he was currently being heavily guarded. He informed the group that this shop was currently one of the most heavily protected areas, so they didn’t have to worry about anything bad happening unexpectedly.
Willow and Ivy told them the same thing, as their families also guarded them and did not let them stay cooped up in their homes. Cillian thought it was probably because their families didn’t want to worsen their state of mind, and being cooped up in their homes wasn’t going to help.
It was only Melissa and Cillian who didn’t have people guarding them. After all, the former’s family came from commoners, while the latter’s family was like a dog that had lost its owner. Though Cillian’s father had at least hired some decent guards to do their jobs properly.
It was an obvious choice to place some guards, but there was a much deeper reason why guards were currently stationed around these three.
Willow looked towards Melissa and asked.
"Melissa, with the changes happening at the Academy, there’s a thing going around that everyone should have at least one or two personal guards. If you don’t have anyone to choose from yet, I can inquire with some people for you."
The guards weren’t there just for show. It was their families’ decision to have someone guard their sons and daughters once they all returned to the Academy. This was just one of the many changes the Academy had implemented in its system to reassure families about their children’s safety.
"That... actually, I’m not planning on hiring any guards. If I ever need one, I’ll be the one to find someone. If that happens, I’ll ask for your help, Willow. Okay?"
Melissa answered in a rather shy tone, feeling that she had already received so much from Willow. After all, all the expenses Melissa had suffered from the recent attack had been taken care of by Willow. Her family’s well-being had also been taken care of by her. Asking for anything more would only burden her.
Willow indeed wanted to help and was about to open her mouth, but after understanding the meaning behind Melissa’s words, she quieted down. Ivy was about to offer her support as well, but she stood down and let Melissa have her wish.
Cillian, who had been quiet for most of the conversation, decided to use this chance to chime in. Since he wasn’t a noble and his family wasn’t influential in the current state of Viola, he might as well lend a hand to Melissa.
"I can help you with that. Are you willing to go to the Undercity though?"
Kash and Willow, who had no affiliations in the Underworld, looked at him curiously.
Ivy seemed to have some experience there, as she didn’t appear very interested. Her family was rich and had good connections within Viola, so she probably just stayed on the sidelines if she ever had a connection.
But it was obvious that Kash and Willow had never entered the Underworld since they were nobles. Who knew what people might plot if they ever found a noble there?
"Undercity?"
Melissa asked, and Cillian nodded.
"Just the two of us?"
Cillian was about to nod once more before he stopped abruptly.
Then, Cillian reassured them with an honest reply, finding the statement somewhat wrong when put into context.
"I’m not trying to do anything funny. Besides, I think the people in the Undercity are more reliable than the official Ruiners and Guilds when it comes to security. As long as you pay, that is. They’re more trustworthy because contracts exist."
’Or who knows. Maybe I can ask my father’s guards to do it? Like the previous people watching me.’
Cillian added inwardly.
Cillian tried to clear up any funny ideas that might have come from his comment. He was saying it with a clear conscience.
Besides, when it came to finding someone who could guard Melissa, she didn’t have to worry about a thing because he would be there.
He would definitely find someone among the people in the Undercity who could uphold a contract. He had explored the place before and knew where to look for someone who might accept Melissa as a client.
"By the way, if you found it suspicious, then you can reject it. This is only a suggestion."
Then, he added, thinking that she might feel uncomfortable being alone with him.
If she didn’t reject it, the problem Melissa would encounter by doing this was keeping the contract going. She would need money for it, but that problem would be solved once Cillian wrapped this up and gave her some suggestions when they faced it.
’For now, this first.’
Melissa pondered Cillian’s suggestion before asking once again.
"Do I... really need to do it? Having guards is not mandatory, right?"
Ivy chimed in with the conversation.
"It’s slowly turning into a requirement, so while it’s not mandatory yet, the Academy has started to change and is strongly pushing the idea of having guards when we return."
Melissa realized that it was really hard to be poor. She already knew that, but she didn’t complain since there was no point in complaining about a situation that didn’t need for it. It wasn’t as if her family was forcing her to do things that made her resent them. In fact, it was the opposite.
She was loved, and she loved her family. That’s why she never felt jealous of her friends for being richer than her. Even so, times had changed, and those with money could easily take things away simply because they had the means to do so.
’I can’t keep relying on Willow. She always does things without asking for anything in return. I need to find a job that will help me support myself and my family...’
Melissa tried hard to think, but nothing came to mind. The group noticed this as well, as she had been silent for a while before someone finally broke the ice.
’If she was still doubtful then, can I suggest this?’
Cillian pondered for a moment before pushing an idea at the table.
"How about this? If you’re doubtful about getting a guard because you don’t have enough money to pay for one, you can work with our Whisper Broker. You don’t have any source of income left after the library was destroyed, right? If that’s the case, then try to think about this deal."
It was Cillian once more who was being more helpful than Melissa, something the group had witnessed for the first time.
’It’s not like I’m trying to mend a broken relationship with her. This is for her own sake. I can suggest this so that Willow, Kash, and Ivy will stop pestering Melissa about her choices. Still, what they said is right. In this situation, it’s better to have someone looking out for your back. But if she rejects this idea again, I’ll stop.’
What Cillian was planning was simple. She would do a part-time job for the Whisper Broker, which was currently busy with its own affairs. If Cillian endorsed her to his father and sponsored her, she might be able to earn a good salary. At the same time, she would be protected and watched.
It was another solution that Cillian thought rather than the first one by exploring the Undercity to find suitable guards for her.
But why would Cillian be doing this in the first place? It’s not like he was getting something in return.
Simple.
Even though he wasn’t trying to fix their already broken relationship because of what had happened in the past, Cillian wanted to at least give Melissa the idea that everything wasn’t hopeless.
For goodness’ sake, everyone had just survived a traumatic experience. There had to be something Melissa could do where she only had to worry about this situation while she saved up the salary she would receive from their guild.
’And as well as a repayment for what this shitty body did to you, I guess’
Cillian added inwardly as he waited for Melissa to speak. His gaze shifted to the side to see if she was finally agreeing, only to find her eyes turning cloudy as tears formed at the corners of them.
Then, a tear fell from her cheek.
This action alarmed Cillian so much that he couldn’t help but move slightly away, a deep frown forming on his face.
Then he blurted out.
"Why are you crying?!"
’I didn’t even do anything bad to you!’
