Chapter 51: Refusing a Demon’s Contract?
The two of them eventually arrived at a patio, where they sat opposite each other.
"Why did you do it..." Clawdeth was the first to speak.
"I’m afraid you’ll have to be a lot more specific than that. I’ve done a lot of things after all." Osborne let out a quiet laugh.
"Then I’ll get straight to the point. Why did you save me back there... It–"
"Would have been simpler for me to just let you die, right?" Osborne finished her sentence for her, causing her expression to deepen.
"Well, to that, it’s quite simple."
"Now that you’ve betrayed your first master and been abandoned by your second, I want you to work for me."
"Don’t make me laugh. Why would I ever work for you?" Clawdeth scoffed.
"You can act tough all you want, but the truth of the matter shall remain that you currently have no backer or faction within this household." Osborne leaned back, seemingly carefree.
"Of course, you could return to Rebecca, but who knows when that woman will force you to take the blame again. I saved you this time, but can you guarantee you’ll be left unscathed the next time?"
"I doubt you’d go begging my wife to take you back. Knowing her, you might end up dead if you did that," he said.
Clawdeth turned silent, yet she ended up biting her lower lip in frustration.
While she hated it, she couldn’t deny that everything he said was in fact the truth.
"Why exactly do you want my help? You hate me. Aren’t you worried I’d betray you too..."
"Oh, I’m counting on it."
"What?" Clawdeth was taken aback.
"I’d rather have someone I know I can’t trust on my side than someone whose true intentions I can’t tell at all."
’Not that I’d trust anyone to begin with...’
"So, what will it be?" He leaned forward, awaiting her answer.

(Roseline’s Study)
"It’s been a while since we’ve spent time like this." Silvester skimmed through the books on her left shelf before pulling one out.
"You know you could have simply asked to move into the estate. I wouldn’t have refused," Roseline said.
"I know, but until now I had no reason to," Silvester chuckled.
"I never took you for one to do such a thing," Roseline said. "Are you really sure about this?"
"He saved her life. It’s the least I could do to return the favour."
"But I could have him refuse..." Roseline said, but when she saw his resolute look, she sighed instead.
"Talking about things no one was expecting, what made you do it?"
"Picking a spouse?"
"You seemed like you were more than married to the battlefield already. Back in the day, it was rare for you to talk to others, much less marry someone out of the blue."
"I’m not doing this for any foolish reasons such as emotions. As the head of House Roosevelt, even I have responsibilities I can’t deny." Roseline massaged her temple. "Plus, Guinevere wouldn’t stop reminding me... going on and on about how old I was getting."
"So you chose a boy instead?"
"He was someone of character..." Roseline said.
Silvester raised a brow, giving her a look. Was she talking about the same man he saw, who constantly burned in the flames of his own rage? That guy? Was someone of character?
"From what I was told, he wasn’t like that when he first got here," Roseline said.
If only those two sisters of hers hadn’t gone ahead and done all those things.
"I heard," Silvester said.
"So your negligence is to blame then." Silvester let out a quiet chuckle.
"You make it sound like I enjoy torturing my own husband." Roseline chuckled. It was nice talking to someone who wasn’t afraid of her for a change.
Knock~ Knock~
"Speak of the devil," Silvester shook his head lightly.
Osborne entered the study the next moment.
"Sir Vanastraia..." He first offered a nod to Silvester.
"There’s no need for formalities." Silvester laughed, placing a hand on his shoulder. "Just Silvester will do."
Osborne didn’t reply, instead looking towards Roseline. "I’m afraid it’d be a stretch to refer to a long-term friend of my love in such a way."
"You see what you’ve done." Silvester looked at Roseline. "The poor man can’t even think for himself."
She didn’t reply.
"What is it you’ve come here to say?" Roseline said to Osborne.
"I only came to relay the progress of the task you assigned me."
"While I did gain a magic instructor, I’ve yet to acquire an aura instructor."
"And why did you feel the need to tell me this?"
"It’s because I have but one request." Osborne offered a bow and said.
"I’d like nothing more than for you to become my aura instructor–"
"I refuse." Roseline rejected him outright.
"You seemed so confident when I assigned you that task. If you had simply remained silent, you wouldn’t have needed to exert yourself this much, yet now you’ve come back, pleading for leniency?"
"I had the intention of becoming a disciple of Sir Silvester, but unfortunately, it would appear I’m unfit to learn from him."
"And how does that concern me? Go out and find someone more suitable. You still haven’t given me a reasonable reason to teach you."
"Roseline, at least try to teach him. The war’s long since been stalled. I doubt there’s anything taking most of your time."
"Silvester... Please don’t interfere," Roseline said.
Silvester let out a sigh before patting Osborne on the shoulder. "Well, I tried," he said before leaving the room.
Leaving only Osborne and Roseline alone.
"I’m waiting... Give a reason why I should even consider offering you aid after you rejected it the first time."
Osborne let out a sigh before straightening his back. "You’re indeed right. I have no right to show my face here seeking help when I rejected it to begin with."
Roseline was still silent, expecting him to continue.
"I apologise for wasting your time..." He offered an apologetic bow before turning around to leave. "I... I simply..." Osborne tried to say, his expression conflicted.
