Cerberus surged up through the abyss like an avalanche of muscle, chains, and pure accumulated resentment.
All three heads were completely focused on Thanatos, and that alone would have been bad enough.
The problem was that the infernal hound had just discovered something far more dangerous than anger.
Motivation.
Thanatos saw the creature approaching and immediately raised her reconstructed scythe. Black energy exploded around her body, wrapping her robe in a storm of shadows while dozens of funerary symbols appeared in the air.
"CERBERUS!"
The hound did not slow down.
"I AM YOUR SUPERIOR!"
All three heads roared together.
Thanatos opened a barrier of death directly in front of him.
Cerberus went straight through it.
The structure cracked on the first impact, exploded on the second, and disappeared completely when the central head simply forced its snout through. Thanatos barely managed to leap aside, using her own scythe to propel herself toward a higher platform.
"Are you getting stupid?!"
Down below, Strax was already laughing.
It was not a quiet laugh.
He had one hand over his stomach and was bent forward, watching the Goddess of Death run through her own domain while the dog that was supposed to obey her chased after her with the determination of an animal that had just received the most important order in existence.
Thanatos pointed at Strax.
"MAKE HIM STOP!"
"No."
"I’LL KILL YOU!"
"You tried."
Cerberus’s right head appeared behind her.
Thanatos spun the scythe and struck the animal’s snout with the side of the blade. The blow made the creature recoil a few centimeters, but caused no meaningful injury. The left head came immediately afterward, and Thanatos was forced to disappear in a cloud of black mist before the jaws closed around her waist.
She reappeared several meters above.
Cerberus raised all three heads.
Strax followed everything from below, becoming more entertained by the second.
"Go, boy!"
Thanatos looked at him with hatred.
"DON’T ENCOURAGE HIM!"
"You’re doing great!"
"I AM NOT PARTICIPATING IN A GAME!"
"He is."
Cerberus barked.
The sound was powerful enough to crack one of the nearby platforms.
Strax clapped.
Thanatos looked ready to commit another murder, which was particularly funny considering she was literally the Goddess of Death.
That was when Strax noticed something.
Cerberus was strong.
Very strong.
But there was room for improvement.
His eyes moved across the broken chains attached to the creature’s body and then toward the enormous amount of infernal energy circulating within him. The hound possessed a monstrous structure, capable of enduring spiritual pressures that would destroy ordinary demons.
That meant he might be able to endure a little help.
Strax raised one hand.
"Let’s see."
Thanatos heard him.
"No."
A black sphere formed above Strax’s palm.
"Strax."
He smiled.
"It’s just a little."
"I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT IT MEANS WHEN SOMEONE LIKE YOU SAYS THAT!"
Strax threw the energy.
The sphere crossed the abyss like an arrow and struck Cerberus directly in the chest.
The result was immediate.
The hound stopped in the middle of his leap.
Thanatos stopped too.
Strax raised his eyebrows slightly.
Demonic energy began spreading through Cerberus’s body in black lines, infiltrating his muscles, bones, spiritual cores, and ancient chains.
That was not ordinary demonic mana.
It was energy that had passed through the body of a Demonic Dragon, compressed, refined, and altered by an existence already far beyond conventional demons.
Cerberus began to tremble.
Thanatos looked at Strax.
"What did you do?"
"Fed him."
"THAT IS NOT FOOD!"
"Looks like food to him."
Cerberus roared.
Tartarus responded.
The left head opened its mouth first, and a white flame appeared between its teeth. It was not exactly Strax’s White Fire, but it carried clear traces of that affinity mixed with the guardian’s natural infernal flame.
The fire began red, turned black, and then developed a white core so intense that the surrounding space distorted.
Thanatos went pale.
"No..."
The right head began exhaling vapor.
Black Ice grew around its teeth, spread along its neck, and partially covered one of its front paws. The temperature in the abyss dropped so quickly that small plates of ice began appearing over the nearby stone.
Thanatos looked toward the third head.
"Don’t even think about it."
Black Lightning began running across the horns and fur of the central head.
Strax fell silent.
Then he started laughing even harder.
"FUCK."
Thanatos turned toward him.
"YOU GAVE CERBERUS THREE ELEMENTS?!"
"I didn’t plan that."
"THAT DOESN’T HELP!"
Cerberus also looked confused.
The left head stared at its own flame.
The right tried to bite a piece of ice that had formed over its snout.
The central one sneezed.
A bolt of lightning crossed the abyss.
Thanatos dodged by centimeters.
Strax had to brace one hand against the wall because he was laughing so hard.
"He sneezed at you."
"SHUT UP!"
Cerberus quickly figured out how his new abilities worked.
The fire head attacked first.
Thanatos opened a barrier.
The white infernal flame crashed against the protection and immediately began melting through it. Before she could reinforce the shield, a wave of Black Ice came from the right and froze the entire structure.
Thanatos’s eyes widened.
The lightning came next.
The frozen barrier exploded.
The Goddess of Death was thrown through the air.
Her body spun twice before she regained balance and landed on a small suspended platform. Half her robe was scorched, one sleeve was frozen, and her hair had gained a ridiculous amount of volume because of the electricity.
Strax covered his mouth with one hand.
Tried not to laugh.
Failed.
"HAHAHAHAHAHA!"
Thanatos stared at him with wide eyes.
"I’m going to rip out your soul."
"Look at your hair."
"MY HAIR IS FINE!"
A tiny spark jumped between two strands.
Strax completely lost control.
He braced himself against his own knees, laughing so hard that he had to breathe several times just to remain standing.
Thanatos tried to ignore him and focused on Cerberus again.
The hound was becoming increasingly comfortable with the new elements.
That was terrible.
The fire head attacked across wide areas, forcing Thanatos to constantly change position. The ice head froze platforms and escape routes. The central head used lightning to interfere with teleportation and rapid movement.
There was no perfect coordination.
But there was enthusiasm.
A lot of enthusiasm.
Thanatos jumped toward a side platform.
Ice covered the stone before her feet touched it.
She slipped.
"Fuck!"
She managed to regain balance using the scythe.
A bolt of lightning struck her weapon.
The electricity traveled through the metal and directly into her arm.
Thanatos went completely rigid.
Her hair became even larger.
Strax fell onto his ass.
"I CAN’T TAKE THIS."
"STRAX!"
Cerberus fired.
Thanatos threw herself aside.
Part of her robe caught fire.
She started slapping her own hip to extinguish the flames while running, and at that moment even the little dignity she had still been trying to preserve disappeared entirely.
"STOP! CERBERUS, STOP!"
The hound kept chasing.
"I FED YOU!"
The left head tried to bite her.
"I GAVE YOU SOULS!"
The right froze the platform.
"I HAD YOUR CAVE BUILT!"
A bolt struck beside her.
Thanatos jumped.
"YOU SON OF A—"
Cerberus finally caught her.
The central head grabbed Thanatos around the waist.
It did not bite hard.
Only enough to hold her.
The Goddess of Death remained motionless for several seconds, half her body hanging on one side and half on the other.
Strax managed to stand again.
"Got her."
Thanatos started punching the hound’s snout.
"LET ME GO!"
Cerberus ignored her.
"I AM THANATOS!"
The hound began descending.
"I AM DEATH!"
Strax opened his arms.
"He’s coming."
"I’LL KILL YOU, STRAX!"
"She sounds happy."
Cerberus landed in front of him.
All three heads looked proud.
The central head still held Thanatos around the waist. Small streams of fire escaped from the left head’s nostrils, while the right was covered in a thin layer of ice. Lightning occasionally jumped between the ears of the central head.
Strax pointed at the ground.
"Drop her."
Cerberus opened his mouth.
Thanatos fell.
Not elegantly.
She hit the ground sideways with a wet sound, rolled once, and came to rest on her back in front of Strax.
She was completely covered in drool.
Her hair was stuck to her face, the black robe now had burned, frozen, and torn sections, and an obscene amount of demonic saliva ran down her shoulder.
Thanatos did not move.
Strax looked at her.
Then looked at Cerberus.
"Good boy."
All three tails struck the ground.
Thanatos slowly raised her head.
There was pure murder in her eyes.
Strax crouched in front of her.
"I liked the attempt."
Thanatos did not answer.
"It really was clever. Bring me here, send me in alone, put Cerberus in my path, and watch from a safe distance. I respect it."
She clenched her teeth.
Strax kept smiling.
"You just forgot one thing."
He pointed at himself.
"I’m a Demonic Dragon. And inside Tartarus?"
The black energy around his body became momentarily heavier.
"I get much stronger here."
Thanatos wiped some of the saliva from her face.
"I hate you."
"You already said that."
"Now I hate you more."
"But it was a good attempt."
Strax stood.
Then grabbed Thanatos by the back of her collar.
She realized too late.
"No."
Strax lifted her.
Thanatos hung beside him like a particularly angry bag, her feet a few centimeters above the ground while her hands tried to pull at the fabric to ease the pressure around her neck.
"Strax."
"Hmm?"
"Put me down."
"Later."
"I can walk."
"I’ve heard that before."
Cerberus moved one of his heads closer and sniffed Thanatos.
She pointed at him.
"Don’t even think about it."
The dog licked her face.
Thanatos closed her eyes.
Strax had to take a deep breath to avoid laughing again.
Then he looked toward the path ahead, toward that depth where Hades had hidden his essence, and his expression slowly regained the seriousness it had before all the chaos.
The game was over.
For now.
Strax adjusted Thanatos in his hand like someone holding a bag by its strap and spoke with absolute calm:
"Now I want Hades’s soul, all right?"
Thanatos remained hanging there, covered in saliva, her hair ruined, and her dignity buried somewhere far away in Tartarus.
She released a long sigh.
"I really should have let Zeus finish you off."
Strax smiled.
"But you didn’t."
Cerberus walked beside him.
All three heads still released small signs of fire, ice, and electricity.
Thanatos looked at the dog.
Then at Strax.
"And I’m still going to have to explain what you did to Cerberus."
"Tell them he evolved."
"You turned the guardian of Tartarus into an elemental abomination."
Strax stroked the snout of the central head.
"A very obedient elemental abomination."
Cerberus wagged his tail.
Thanatos simply gave up on answering.
