Demons Among Gods

191 – The Eclipse team’s despair

After removing another zombie's head, Thorne jumped back beside Brunhild.

"How are you faring?" he asked in a low voice while staring at the remaining zombies, but his focus was specifically on the last few that the early-stage Rank 2 Mage Mortisia was controlling. He had marked them all before the battle began.

Both Thorne and Brunhild had the same goal since the beginning, and that was to kill Mortisia. To do that, they needed to kill her zombies first, but they also couldn’t be too obvious about it, as that might result in her seeking shelter from the other necromancers. So, they secretly reduced her zombie numbers while keeping the last few alive.

Thorne was asking Brunhild indirectly if she was ready to shoot down Mortisia the moment he finished dealing with the last remaining zombies.

Brunhild understood what Thorne meant, and just as she was about to nod, she, Thorne, and the others felt a cold chill run down their spines.

They quickly turned toward the direction where they felt a deadly threat approaching rapidly. After noticing it was the abnormal, six-armed wicked creature, despair fell upon their entire beings.

If they were in their best form, they could have at least tried fighting against it and wouldn't be in so much despair, but right now they had no strength to put up even an iota of resistance, much less fight it. They lacked both stamina and mana, and they were all too tired.

Mortisia laughed while clapping her hands, "Haha, my savior is here. I wonder who she is going to dine on first!" She wasn't a fool and knew this group was thinking of killing her, but with Vellara around, they could only dream about it.

Thorne grit his teeth.

He didn't say another word and charged toward the rapidly approaching Night Hag Arachnid.

He knew he was no match for it, but he was the most capable among the group. Brunhild might be stronger, but she was an archer and not really skilled in close combat like him.

With a cry filled with spirit, Thorne leaped straight up. Following that, he raised both his swords high and executed an overhead strike toward the crawling creature.

With her dark, void-like eyes, the Night Hag Arachnid glared at the man she had encountered before, but eating him first would be a complete waste. So, just when the attack arrived above her, she raised one of her forearms above her head and blocked it.

CLANK!

A sound as if metal struck metal reverberated across the area; sparks flew, but other than that, nothing else happened. The Night Hag Arachnid's arm was uninjured, nor did her hand drop a single inch from taking the full blunt strike of a mid-stage Rank 2 Warrior.

Thorne’s eyes widened in shock. He had used his full strength and even used his Mana Imbibe on both his swords, but he still wasn't able to push the creature back even a bit? Was it even an Adult-stage Rank 1? Its constitution was perhaps already beyond the Adult stage!

Before Thorne could do anything else, he was hurled away at tremendous speed.

The Night Hag Arachnid had shoved Thorne away by striking his unguarded side with one of her opposite arms. She made sure not to kill or heavily injure the man, as that would reduce the nutrition she could receive when consuming him later.

Thorne struck a thick stone wall a little distance away and slid down while coughing blood.

His ribcage was broken and many of his internal organs were injured. He didn't know how severe his injuries were, but it didn't matter, as he was in utter despair.

He wasn't able to kill a single necromancer, nor was he able to stop the creature; he couldn’t protect any of his companions, even in exchange for his life.

He felt he was a complete failure as a Warrior. He hoped the creature would kill him first.

Morbus, Gravis, Vellara, and Mortisia burst out laughing watching Thorne attack the Night Hag Arachnid.

Morbus even leaned forward and slapped his thighs while laughing, "This fool really thinks he can fight our lovely Arachnid with just a mere mid-stage Rank 2 Warrior's physical strength? This is such an insult to her!"

Gravis, who was beside him, shook his head, "Don't blame these low-lives. They have been living a sheltered life for so long while doing similar tasks over and over." He chuckled, "They really thought we would bother looking after a normal Mana Creature of equal capabilities as a usual Mana Beast's Rank."

Morbus agreed with a grin. He decided to educate the poor souls before they all died.

He raised his voice, "Listen up, fools, and take this to your graves knowing the greatness of our lovely Arachnid. Even though she is only at Adult-stage Rank 1, all her physical stats are at Elder-stage Rank 1! She can even win against an actual physical-type Elder-stage! So, die knowing that you all will be helping her to evolve further as she slowly eats each one of you alive! Hahaha."

Hearing this, Brunhild, Elianor, Garrick, and Eilif's faces turned pale with hopelessness.

If this creature was truly as powerful as an Elder stage, then even if all of them together, including Caius, fought the creature, they still wouldn't be able to scratch it. They could only die pathetically.

Thorne, who was coughing blood, finally understood why this abnormal creature was so agile and also so tough.

He felt all his strength escaping his body and hopelessness started setting in. But he hadn't died yet, so he shouldn't give up—not yet.

The Night Hag Arachnid had paused after throwing Thorne away. She was very tempted to eat him, but her first target was the weakest of them all, and then she would proceed from there.

So, she glanced around and found the red-haired woman whom she had encountered in the guard tower, who had also disturbed her during her previous meal.

The moment the creature stared down at her, Elianor started trembling uncontrollably.

The creature's eyes were devoid of any pupils, but Elianor could see her own foregone, gruesome death within them. Before it had even charged toward her, she felt all her remaining life and strength slipping away.

It was a feeling where one gives up on resisting their enemies in utter despair.

And so Elianor stood frozen in her place, waiting for her inevitable death in sheer horror.

Brunhild, Garrick, and Eilif understood the creature's target was Elianor, so they didn't hesitate and stood before her to protect her.

Since they were all going to die, then they might as well do what teammates were supposed to do: provide protection even with their useless bodies.

The remaining few mortal zombies silently moved toward their master's location, as they had received such an order.

Looking at the three resolute fools, the four necromancers started laughing and smirking with ridicule.

The Night Hag Arachnid had no such 'human' understanding or feelings; she only knew that her other foods were blocking her path toward her first meal. She didn't hesitate and charged straight toward Elianor while ignoring the rest.

Brunhild rapidly fired arrow after arrow, but after striking the pale gray body of the Night Hag Arachnid, they all snapped like twigs or deflected away. None of the arrows managed to penetrate the creature’s skinny body to draw even the tiniest bit of blood or create the slightest injury.

Helpless tears fell from Brunhild's eyes, but she didn't dare to stop even for a moment and kept firing arrow after arrow. She didn't even waste a moment to move and stayed in her place before Elianor.

Garrick raised his massive battle-axe over his head; Eilif beside him similarly raised his two-handed warhammer.

They charged and jumped straight toward the rapidly approaching Night Hag Arachnid, plunging their weapons toward it with their full strength.

Their loud war cry echoed across the area. They didn't hesitate to use whatever mana they had remaining and poured everything into this attack.

The Night Hag Arachnid had no interest in wasting time blocking such weak attacks, so she used her left and right front limbs to slam both their unguarded waists, like slapping bugs in mid-air.

CRACK!

Bone-crushing noises were heard by everyone as both Garrick and Eilif slammed against each other.

Their attack fell on the Night Hag Arachnid, but it didn't even make her flinch, much less do any damage.

Both Garrick and Eilif puked out blood and collapsed as if all their bones had broken into countless pieces.

They were still alive, but half of their bones were broken or fractured. They wouldn’t be able to stand up any time soon, much less fight.

"Garrick! Eilif!" Brunhild cried in anguish, but she didn't pause shooting arrows.

She tried to shoot at the creature's eyes, but it just moved its head slightly away and took the arrows with its bony face.

After disabling three annoyances, the Night Hag Arachnid sped straight toward the remaining hindrance.

Instead of clawing or slamming, she punched at the unguarded abdomen of Brunhild.

Brunhild’s eyes bulged as her body contorted and was hurled away at a terrifying speed.

Elianor watched Brunhild disappear from beside her; she could only stare helplessly with wide, horrified eyes. Her body had been quivering nonstop in fear ever since she laid eyes upon the viciousness-filled gaze of the Night Hag Arachnid, which seemed to be staring directly at her soul.

The Night Hag Arachnid had held back the most when attacking Thorne and Brunhild, as both were intended for the later part of her meal, leaving Caius for last; however, Garrick and Eilif were severely injured and were barely able to twist their heads to look behind in despair.

Thorne was trying his best to stand and attack again, but his ribs were broken; he needed a few more moments to move. Otherwise, as a warrior, this level of injury wasn't enough to permanently cripple him. However, for the time being, he could only keep coughing blood while trying his best to move before the creature could reach Elianor. Unfortunately, he was far too slow for that.

Brunhild rolled and slid across the empty field before being stopped by the broken wall of a house.

She coughed blood. Everything in front of her eyes was hazy. Her eyes were filled with tears that refused to stop.

She helplessly watched as the creature reached for Elianor. She wanted to scream, "Run!" but all she could do was spit out more blood.

Morbus, Gravis, Vellara, and Mortisia had wide grins on their faces as they watched with anticipation as the Night Hag Arachnid reached her first target.

They really wondered how the red-haired girl would scream in agony and misery as she watched herself getting devoured little by little while still alive. They had seen such scenes before and felt a strange, intoxicating feeling from the experience; it filled them with exhilaration.

The remaining zombies stood aside and kept making weird noises from their mouths, as if they were extremely sick people who couldn’t speak a word properly. They stood under their masters' huts and waited for their next order.

Elianor, who was facing the Night Hag Arachnid, had no strength to resist.

As the creature arrived before her, she saw it open its mouth wide, filled with countless sharp teeth, looking as if it could swallow her entire head in one bite. She stood still, filled with sheer terror.

Just as the creature was a step away from biting away her shoulder, she quickly closed her eyes in dread and waited to scream for one final time in her short life before her life faded away.
